Mapping the Transmississippi West, 1540-1861 [Complete, Five Books in Six Volumes]

San Francisco: The Institute of Historical Cartography, printed by the Grabhorn Press, Taylor & Taylor, and the James Printing Company, 1963. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Each volume being one of 1000 copies, the first edition of the work, folio size, approx. 1720 pp. One of 1,000 sets printed over six years, all designed by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, published between 1957 and 1963; Volume One was printed by them, Volumes Two through Four by Taylor & Taylor, and Volume Five (Parts I and II) by the James Printing Company. "Majestic" is the word that immediately springs to mind when beholding this scholarly work by Carl Irving Wheat (1892-1966), who remains known to bibliophiles the world over for his work. In addition to an important bibliography on the works of the Gold Rush, as well as several other books, he is perhaps best remembered for this set, which has been called his "milestone work". Mr. Wheat's inspiration for this came with the rediscovery of a copy of the 1847 Fremont map with manuscript emendations by George Gibbs which were from an unknown source, and which showed, in pencil, the travels by western explorer Jedediah Smith. A contemporary book review stated "Carl Wheat's Mapping of the Transmississippi West is a comprehensive and readable cartographic history of the American West. These beautifully printed books present a truly graphic picture of the exploration and peopling of the vast unknown land west of the Mississippi. The author does not merely present a catalog of significant maps of each era but tells the exciting story of the many facets of history that resulted in their making - of the hard journeys, the hazardous exploits, the motivation, the mysticism, the misunderstandings and the strange blend of fact, imagination, false geographic concept and political necessity which were consummated in the engraver's work". Replete with over 350 maps this set is a delight to cartographers, as well as those with an interest in either western exploration or American history.___DESCRIPTION: Quarter green morocco over tan buckram boards, gilt lettering on the backs, plain endpapers, title pages printed in red and black, a map frontispiece at the beginning of each volume (excepting Part II of Volume Five), each chapter with a large, decorated initial capital in red; folio size (14.5" by 10.5"), pagination: Volume One: [i-iv], v-xiii, [xiv], 1-264; Volume Two: [i-iv], v-xiii, [xiv] blank, 1-281; Volume Three: [i-iv], v-xiii, [xiv] blank, 1-349; Volume Four: [i-iv], v-xiii, [xiv] blank, 1-260; Volume Five, Part I: [i-iv], v-xviii, [xix-xx], divisional title and blank, 1-222; Volume Five, Part II: [i-iv], 223-487; a prior owner bookplate (partially removed around the edges) on the front pastedown of Volume One; this set lacking the rarely found dust jackets.___CONDITION: Set is in near fine to fine condition, each volume with solid bindings, the corners are straight and unrubbed, each volume has a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, the paper crisp; other than the bookplate referred to above, the set is entirely free of prior owner markings. The only condition issues we see are a shallow bump to the top edge of the front board of Volume One, an extremely gentle bump to the head of the spine of Volume Three and some general light soiling, mostly to Volume One. All maps are present and in excellent condition; a handsome set of the first printing of this seminal work.___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, and therefore additional postage will need to apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Strength to Love.

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1963. Early printing of Martin Luther King Jr.'s second book. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Fujie With Best Wishes and Warm Regards Martin Luther King Jr." Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. King notes in the preface: "In these turbulent days of uncertainty the evils of war and of economic and racial injustice threaten the very survival of the human race. Indeed, we live in a day of grave crisis. The sermons in this volume have the present crisis as their background; and they have been selected for this volume because, in one way or another, they deal with the personal and collective problems that the crisis presents.

In handschrift, sorry'.

[Scrapbook and Photo Album]: Woman's Married Life Scrapbook

Milwaukee, 1963. Good. Quarto measuring 12" x 12.5". String-tied cream leather over paper boards with "scrapbook" stamped on the front board. Contains 182 sepia toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7" with captions. Good only album with detached pages, chips, tears, and rubbing with fine photographs.A scrapbook kept by Grace Reed mostly between 1942 and 1947 with some laid in photos from 1963. The album begins with Grace's marriage to her husband, Cameron, and the beginning of their life together in Milwaukee. Grace illustrated many of the pages with colorful small images detailing the action in the photos as well as neatly captioning the scenes in colorful script. The Reeds were also avid amateur photographers and their work is seen throughout the album. Early photos show the city of Milwaukee including a nicely composed image of "downtown Milwaukee" and the public parks of the city. From there Grace details their engagement, honeymoon, and early days of marriage with cute captions and posed photos. One group of photos has the couple in three different shots with the first showing Cameron posed behind a seated Grace captioned "this is good," then Grace on his lap, "this is better," then the couple kissing, "this is best." The couple also enjoyed outings to the Roller Skating Follies of 1942 and a boxing match in 1943.During the war years the couple worked at the Allis-Chalmers Supercharger Plant, the initial page in the scrapbook is illustrated by a plane drawn in green by Grace. Cameron was part of the architecture team who created the plant. One series of photos shows "the evolution of the plant" in various stages, another page entitled "the brains" and shows Cameron and his colleagues at a drafting table. Other photos of the plant show the switch room, men working, and the substation. She documented a winter together with images of frozen ponds, snow covered trees, and an "impromptu" kiss under a streetlight. One section is titled "A Day in the Life of the Reeds" which shows cute photos of the couple from 6:30 am with Cameron playfully pulling his wife out of bed, them kissing over a cup of coffee, working at the factory, having dinner, cuddling on the couch, and finally saying their prayers. The couple was involved in local radio and stage productions and are photographed here. Other photos show the couple during Halloween, on a road trip through Wisconsin, and celebrating Christmas. In the winter of 1943 the couple announced they were expecting a baby and the photos here show Cameron reading a book about parenting and Grace knitting and a photo of the new baby, Walter, is seen on a following page. The album ends with vacation photos and holiday parties.A wonderful collection of photographs detailing a couple's life during World War II through a well-captioned scrapbook.

        Dead Fingers Talk

London: John Calder/Olympia Press, (1963). London: John Calder/Olympia Press. (1963). The uncorrected proof copy of this drug novel, which consists of an amalgam of sections from The Naked Lunch, The Soft Machine and The Ticket that Exploded, as well as some material not reproduced elsewhere. Inscribed by Burroughs "For Richard Aaron" on the half title. Also on the half title, in another hand: "M. Farmer. Reading copy. Publication date: Oct. 31st, 1963." Published at the height of Burroughs' experimentation with the cut-up technique, this volume embodies that approach, as well as anticipating the later variation of it that we now call "sampling." A good association copy: Richard Aaron was, among other things, the person who negotiated the sale of Burroughs' literary archive to Robert Altmann of Liechtenstein. There was no U.S. edition of this title. Near fine in plain green wrappers, in a very good dust jacket, which differs from the published jacket by virtue of being trimmed to a shorter height and having had the flaps trimmed as well. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.
