JACKSON, Martha and George Brecht, Jim Dine, Walter Gaudnek, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenberg, and Robert Whitman
New York: Martha Jackson Gallery, 1961. Some significant creasing, chipping and overall wear, chiefly along the page-edges; very good in printed wrappers. Nonetheless a scarce survival; OCLC locates two copies.. First Edition. Thin narrow quarto, stapled. Exhibition catalogue for a show at Martha Jackson Gallery, held from May 25 through June 23, 1961. Contains artist statements by George Brecht, Jim Dine, Walter Gaudnek, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenberg, and Robert Whitman. A seminal show of downtown avant-garde work that would soon be labeled as "Pop Art" (though Jill Johnston worried in a Village Voice review that Martha Jackson had lost her commercial acumen). Especially notable for an early version Oldenberg's "Store" concept, explained in his most well known piece of writing, the Gisnberg-esque beat manifesto "I Am For...". Oldenberg's "The Store" would open as a fully realized concept on 2nd Street later the same year. [Attributes: First Edition]

Salinger, J.D
Little, Brown, and Company, New York, 1961. First edition, second printing of Salinger's third book. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by Salinger on the front free endpaper to a personal friend, "Oke, Stop over sometime, JDS 8/26/61." While Salinger was known for his reclusive behavior with regard to the spotlight of the international press, he did have close relations with the local townspeople around his New Hampshire home, who respected his privacy. This inscription shows the authentic nature of those relationships. Affixed to the verso of the front panel and front free endpaper are three newspaper clippings regarding Salinger's reputation as a recluse later in life, including a clipped article from the Boston Herald, Thursday, April 25th, 1991, "Salinger breaks silence to refuse award" regarding Salinger's refusal to accept a Lillian L. Poses Creative Arts Award in 1991 and a clipped Q. & A. regarding news of a fire at Salinger's hilltop home in Cornish, New Hampshire. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Books signed by Salinger are scarce. Salinger's short story Franny and novella Zooey first appeared in The New Yorker in 1955 and 1957 respectively. Both stories center on the two youngest members of the Glass family of New York's Upper East Side, Franny takes place in an unnamed college town during Franny's weekend visit to her boyfriend. Set shortly after Franny, Zooey takes place in the Glass family Manhattan apartment where Franny is suffering from an existential breakdown. Both stories echo Salinger's own disillusio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Raboni, Giovanni
Milano, Lampugnani Nigri Editore, 1961, Edizione originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Frost & John F. Kennedy
New York: The Spiral Press, 1961. Limited and Numbered Edition. Hardcover. This is a fine press limited and hand-numbered edition printed for friends of The Spiral Press in March of 1961 commemorating Robert Frost's participation in the January 20, 1961 Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. The book measures 11.5 x 7.75 inches, bound in grey paper-covered boards with the Seal of the President of the United States on the front cover. The contents are printed black and red with gilt and gray illustrations on laid paper with untrimmed fore edges. Included are the poems “Dedication” and “The Gift Outright” as well as President Kennedy's inaugural address. The presidential eagle was cut in wood especially for this publication by illustrator Fritz Kredel (1900-1973). The typography is credited to printer, publisher, typographer and Spiral Press founder Joseph Blumenthal (1897-1990). This copy is hand-numbered “426” of five hundred copies on the limitation page. Condition is very good. The gray paper-covered binding remains square and tight with sharp corners. Doubtless, the overall excellent condition of the fragile binding owes to the presence of the tattered original, plain glassine dust wrapper. The glassine has done its job taking the brunt of age and wear and as a consequence is toned, fully separated along the spine, and chipped at all extremities. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks. Spotting is primarily confined to the endpapers, which also show offsetting from the dust jacket flaps. Spotting is light and intermittent throughout. On January … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ward, Colin (Ed)
Freedom Press, London. Anarchy - First Series complete, issues 1-118, 1961-1970. Original card covers, each 32pp. Staples often rusted, minor rubbing to extremities, spines sometimes lightly faded, one or two with previous owner's names in, occasional light foxing to edges of text block, but generally quite bright and clean. Number 105 has the standard typographic cover as usual (not the suppressed graphic cover - see Poyner, page 272 for Segar's explanation). A complete set of the first series of Anarchy, in original wrappers, now housed in a black buckram case with label. Most issues are on a specific theme examined from an Anarchist perspective, ie. Crime and Punishment, India, Automation, Poverty, Spain, Education etc. Comfortably the best English language Anarchist periodical ever produced, it includes work by Ward, Bookchin, Walter, Chomsky and Goodman amongst many others. The cover designs, mainly by Segar, but also by others, were replicated recently in a book, edited by Poyner, called 'Autonomy', which also has a very useful index to 'Anarchy'.
«I say "strange" because, outside of ballet performances, everything else is missing». «I have myself played the Firebird Suite many times (I never play the old version) and therefore some revenue must have accrued from there». «Also there was some TV last year under my conducting [...]».
[Click Below for Full Description]

1961. "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller. First edition, first printing with "First Printing" stated on the copyright page. Published by Simon and Schuster, New York, 1961. Measures 6" x 9", 443 pages.
