Warsaw, Wydanwnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej, 1961. First Edition. First Impression. A true first edition, preceding the first English-language edition by nearly a decade. Uncommon. One of the finest works in the speculative genre. A highlight of any science fiction collection. Adapted for film three times, the best perhaps being the 1972 adaptation. The book itself is near fine with just the slightest wear to the edges, one closed tear and crease to the rear, upper spine tip and another short closed tear (4mm) to the top of the jacket. Two longer closed tears to the lower spine (25mm & 15mm). A wonderful book. In Andrews and Rennison's 100 Must-Read SF Novels [p86]. [Music]: [CAGE, John]
np [Living Theatre?], 1961. First Edition. Broadside poster, 14" x 8.5". Printed recto only in black and purple. 11 lines. Some faint staining and toning to edges, largely unobtrusive and not effecting any text. About very good. Very good -. Original promotional poster announcing a reading by John Cage to celebrate the publication of SILENCE. Released in October 1961, Cage's seminal first book is also almost certainly his most important. Part poem, part aesthetic meditation, part essay, part musical composition, it remains ahead of its time. This poster adevertises a reading from one of the pieces from the book At Judith Meline and Julian Beck's Living Theatre, an important venue for Cage where he frequently performed. OCLC does not locate any holdings, though we are aware of one at Northwestern. An ephemeral production from a significant event. [Attributes: First Edition]

Kennedy, Jacqueline; Robert McNamara And Dean Rusk. [John F. Kennedy]
1961. Rare original photograph of the swearing-in ceremony of President John F. Kennedy's cabinet on January 21st 1961. Signed by Jacqueline Kennedy, Robert S. McNamara, and Dean Rusk. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 17 inches. Kennedy brought to the White House a contrast in organization compared to the decision-making structure of former-General Eisenhower; he selected a mixture of experienced and inexperienced people to serve in his cabinet including Robert McNamara, who was well known as one of Ford Motor Company's "Whiz Kids" as Secretary of Defense and Dean Rusk, a restrained former Truman official, as Secretary of State. Unlike Eisenhower, Kennedy did not have a chief of staff, but instead relied on a small number of senior aides, including appointments secretary Kenneth O'Donnell. Richard Yates True 1st/1st ARC 1961 Random House Hardcover
Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates - 1961 Random House Hardcover - First Edition (Stated) First Printing Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) - Original advanced dust jacket This book is in very good condition with a good+ jacket. The book is VERY solid: straight and tight, appears unread. There is a previous owner's name written in the book, but otherwise the book is mark-free. There is some rubbing and bumping to the extremities of the book, but nothing major at all. The jacket has some surface wear and a few scuffs, one specifically on the spine that you can see in the photos. The spine of the jacket is also age-toned. That said, this is an extremely scarce jacket and this one is still in very presentable condition for a collector. This is the holy grail of Yates first editions, scarce in first edition, but impossibly so in this advanced jacket. Please see all the photos for condition details as well as reading this description, and feel free to ask me any questions you might have. Please read description and look at photos before buying The pictures are of the exact book you will be receiving. I try to always put up as many photos as I can so that you can see the exact book you will receive and determine the condition for yourself from every angle. If you need any additional information or pictures, please do not hesitate to ask and I'll get those for you right away. All my items are shipped properly, with proper wrapping. Domestic shipping is free. If you would prefer a specific shipping service, please let me know and I will accommodate your request. International shipping is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Offprint from BALANCED LIVING (Dec. 1961) of a speech delivered at Quaker House in Chicago on March 15, 1956, concerning the Montgomery bus boycott. An anarchist, activist, and pacifist, Joffre was also involved in the Beat movement of the 1950s, published a volume of poetry and is mentioned by name in Allen Ginsberg's HOWL ("with big pacifist eyes sexy in their dark skin passing out incomprehensible leaflets"). MILLER, Henry.
New York Grove Press, 1961. First American edition, number 91 of 100 specially bound hors commerce copies signed by the author; 8vo (204 x 132 mm.); internally fine, free of ownership markings or similar; publisher's cloth-backed marbled boards, lettered in gilt to spine, minor rubbing to corners but overall a superior example. A fine copy of the rare specially bound first American edition of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller, one of 100 copies signed by the author on the limitation page. Originally published in Paris by the Obelisk Press in 1934, Tropic of Cancer was immediately banned in America and shortly after in Britain and Canada for its candid sexuality which offended many. Upon its American publication in 1961 with this edition by the Grove Press the work was tested via numerous obscenity trials in over twenty-one States, the majority holding that the work was not obscene, though notable dissenting voices included Pennsylvanian Supreme Court Justice Musmanno, who stated that Tropic of Cancer is "not a book. It is a cesspool, an open sewer, a pit of putrefaction, a slimy gathering of all that is rotten in the debris of human depravity." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SALINGER, J.D.
Little, Brown and Company, 1961. Near Fine. 3/4/2011. Uncorrected galleys. String-tied in unprinted gray wrappers with applied paper title label. Printed rectos only. Slight crease on the front wrap, modest age-toning, else near fine, with the title handwritten on the spine as "Franny and Zooy" [sic]. Laid in are a press release, a publicity statement to booksellers, and a seasonal pamphlet reviewing the book. The press release, on Little, Brown stationery, is interesting as it details an August publication date (the book was eventually published in September) and also announces that the book would contain an introduction by Salinger (the little additional text that he reluctantly provided was used on the jacket flaps and there is no introduction within the book itself). Additionally, these galleys lack the dedication page added to the published book. By the late 1950s Salinger had become so disillusioned with the marketing practices of publishers that he broke all ties with his English publisher after they allowed *Nine Stories* to be published with a garish cover. With Little, Brown he stipulated that there would be no advance publicity for the book, that it would have simple and understated art design, and that Salinger himself would provide the jacket text. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ryo Yanagi; George Saito (intro); S. Foujimoto (photo); Walter
Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha. First edition, 1961. Green and yellow printed cloth folio, 14 x 10.75 inches. 179pp. With English language supplement laid into a fitted folding printed linen slipcase with bone clasp closure, lined with gold paper. Text in Japanese, replete with tipped-in color photographs of the gardens and architecture of the Katsura Imperial Villa. Volume is in fine condition, though some of the tissue guards have extended beyond the textblock and are thus a bit worn at the exposed edge. English supplement is illustrated with layout plans, and is also in fine condition. The folding slipcase is lightly sunned at the edges and has light shelfwear soil, though it remains in VG+ condition. The Katsura Imperial Villa, or Katsura Detached Palace, is a villa with associated gardens and outdoor buildings in the western suburbs of Kyoto, Japan. Its gardens are a masterpiece of Japanese gardening, and the buildings are even more important, among the greatest achievements of Japanese architecture. The palace includes a shoin ("drawing room"), tea houses, and a strolling garden. It provides an invaluable window into the villas of princes of the Edo period. The Imperial Household Agency administers it, and accepts visitors by appointment. A rare volume of this important Japanese treasure, in great condition. Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
