SCHWARTS, Robert N. & TOWNES, Charles H
Washington, February 27, 1961. 14 pp. Mimeograph, printed rectos only, stapled. Light browning. Very good.PRE-PUBLICATION RARITY. "The classic paper published in Nature that started it all" (coseti.org), this is the founding work of optical SETI. This pre-publication form is dated more than a month before the article's publication in Nature. For years SETI research focused on radio transmissions, but the development of powerful lasers has made Optical SETI (OSETI) a highly promising area of research. Townes's prescient proposal is even the more remarkable given the very limited power of masers and lasers at the time this paper appeared.Charles Hard Townes, Nobel Prize-winning physicist, is most famous for his work on the theory and application of the maser, on which he received the fundamental patent, and other work in quantum electronics connected with both maser and laser devices. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964 with Nikolay Basov and Alexander Prokhorov "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle."Provenance: David Katcher, founding editor of Physics Today, with the notation "Mr. Katcher" at the top of the first page.[with]Sagan's own copy of his early SETI paperSAGAN, CARL. The Quest for Life Beyond the Earth.Reprinted from Harvard Alumni Bulletin. Washington: Smithsonian, 1965. Original wrappers, stapled as issued. pp. 297-306, 4 plates. Minimal fading. "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" is for both seasoned cooks and beginners who love good food & long to reproduce at home the savory delights of the classic cuisine, from the historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. This beautiful book, with over 100 instructive illustrations, is revolutionary in its approach because: It leads the cook infallibly from the buying and handling of raw ingredients, through each essential step of a recipe, to the final creation of a delicate confection. It breaks down the classic cuisine into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of recipes; the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations bound to increase a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Miller & Michael Fraenkel
Grove Press, Inc & John Calder, 1961. D'ARTAGNAN BOOKS This note/telegram was written by Michael Fraenkel to Henry Miller. As a telegram there would be no signatures, and the original draft would have been retained by the writer. The book referenced 'Max' would be Max and the White Phagocytes. This note/telegram clearly references the breakdown in the relationship between Fraenkel and Miller and Fraenkel's motivation for stopping the 'Hamlet' correspondence. Fraenkel was the inspiration for Boris in Tropic of Cancer. These books and note/telegram were owned by Michael P Harris, who was a friend of Daphne Fraenkel, and connected to the Carrefour Press. He became her 'literary executor' on her death. Daphne's husband Michael communicated with Henry Miller in what came to be known as 'The Hamlet Letters'. The books are both first editions, though the 'true' first edition was published in 1934. There are pencil annotations through-out both by Michael P Harris. He has also written two and half pages of notes at the front of both. 'Tropic of Cancer is a fictional autobiography of Miller's first months in Paris as a struggling writer. Its sexual explicitness was revolutionary for its time and brought Miller considerable notoriety.' Tropic of Cancer published by John Calder in 1963. This is a first edition in average condition. This is a 1st Edition / 1st Printing. Condition: Book - Good - rubbing/bumping/wear to the corners and edges, a lean and creasing to the spine, some marking and discolouration to the covers, page edges and a couple of pages, soft tanning to the pages, there … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIEDEL, Jan
N.p.: Various locations, ` c. 1961-1975. Extensive archive of photographs and drag racing ephemera, all of which belonged to and documents the work of Jan Riedel. Contents include 252 loose photographs (143 color, 109 black and white: 232 snapshots, 20 enlargements), 30 film negatives, 20 pencil and ink drawings of various sizes, approximately 200 racing time slips and certificates, 150 advertising and event stickers, approximately 80 invoices, 40 ticket stubs and participant passes, and 8 NHRA Rule Booklets. The material foremost documents several design iterations of "Frustration", Riedel's drag race car, as well as the actual races, most notably at the 1964 NHRA Nationals held at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The archive demonstrates the unique process of engineering, graphic artistry, and personal self-invention that created the many iterations of Jan Riedel's "Frustration" drag race car. In the endless modifications, tweaks, and improvements, drag racing epitomizes the ingenious, and competitive individuality that fueled drag racing, especially in the postwar era. The drawings and photographs especially document a personal view of this distinctly American subculture. Photographs uniformly near fine to fine; working notes and other ephemeral material very good to near fine.

Man Ray, i. e. Michael Rudnitzky, American artist (1890-1976).
N. p. [Paris], 21. XI. 1961. Oblong 8vo. 1 page. To the writer and translator Alice Bellony-Rewald in connection with his autobiography: "Received your note and the Korectype. Many thanks. What a break to have your flat here. I go to my studio every two days or so for my mail and an appointment, but the street is full of concrete mixers and steam drills. [.] There is no hurry in translating my chapter; I think I told you I'm rewriting it, reducing it to two thirds. [.] a couple of pages will do - to give me an idea, or at least a French publisher, of what my book sounds like. - Your evening with Seitz [William C. Seitz] and the Duchamps makes things seem very close, as if we were in on it [.]". - Alice Bellony-Rewald, wife of the famous art historian John Rewald, had lent her apartement in Paris to Man Ray and his wife Juliet Browner, who was recovering from an operation. His own studio in rue Férou was unsuitable for working and living because of the roadworks mentioned in the letter. At the time, Ray was writing his autobiography "Selfportrait" which would be published in 1963. The apparent collaboration with Alice Bellony-Rewald did not last, and the first French edition of the book was published in the translation of Anne Guérin in 1964. [Attributes: First Edition]
