Official programme for the European Cup preliminary round match, played in Zabrze (Poland) on September 13, 1961. Gornik won the match 4-2 but lost the tie 5-10 after being on the end of an 8-1 thrashing the following week in north London. This was Spurs' very first match in European competition - they went on to lose to Benfica in the semi-final. Light horizontal fold, otherwise in very good condition. Very rare.

Catich, Edward M.
Davenport: Catfish Press, (1961). 8vo. cloth. xi, 244 pages. With 93 4to. broadside plates, the two sections enclosed in a cloth bound case specially constructed to hold the two differently-sized parts. With a three-page introduction by W.A. Dwiggins followed by the text in the calligraphic handwriting of Catich. Catich has based his work on the original Trajan columns in Rome and included short critiques of the sources of these letters. Dwiggins, in his introduction, states that this work "will be a good tool in art schools - and elsewhere - for renovating standards that have become a trifle frayed in these revolutionary years. It will stimulate a return to an understanding of the true function of letters ..." His words still hold true. Case worn at corners, short tears at base of folder, contents fine. Signed by Catich on first blank page, and he has also inscribed to Jackson Burke. In addition, the preface has been signed and dated by Dwiggins.

FLEMING, Ian Lancaster (1908-1964)
London: Jonathan Cape, 1961.. FIRST EDITION, First Issue, Binding A. Octavo, pp.254. Publisher's cloth-effect paper over boards with embossed skeleton hand design to upper board, gilt titles to spine. In original dust-wrapper illustrated by Richard Chopping priced at 15s. A couple of tiny spots to edges, jacket fresh and clean showing careful handling. A lovely near fine copy. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). An omnibus edition was published in 2010. The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story.

Rea, Katheryn
[Columbus, OH, 1961. An archive of material from the Christian ventriloquist Katheryn Rea (1917-2010) of Columbus, Ohio. She and her husband James operated Jimmy Rea Electronics in Columbus from the 1950s well into the 2000s. The couple also founded the Interdenominational Drive-In Christian Film Association, which operated a long-time free Christian drive-in theatre on the west side of Columbus. The feature of the archive is "Chubby," a wooden and paper-mâché ventriloquist's dummy measuring approximately 32 inches in height, and dressed in his original home-made clothing. Also, 25 pages of holograph performance scripts and notes, ventriloquism-related publications, ephemera, and correspondence, together in a contemporary hard-shell suitcase. The story goes that Ms. Rea acquired this dummy from the noted figure builder William Kirk Brown of Miami, Florida, likely ca. 1954. (The manufacturer's pencil markings to the dummy's interior suggest he was "born" on December 23, 1953 and given the name Chubby. The near coincidence to the Nativity seems apt. Rea's scripts reference the dummy's good fortune to be delivered into a good Christian household in Ohio and out of the fleshpots of the Miami nightclubs. Rea's scripts are geared toward spreading the Good Word to children, and appear to have accompanied Saturday and Sunday evening showings at the drive-in during the 50s and early 60s. The relationship between Christian evangelism and ventriloquism, is of course not so straightforward. Ventriloquism as a form of entertainment emerged during the 16th and 17th centuri … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCIANNA, Ferdinando (Bagheria, 1943)
. Molto buono (Very Good). Sovraccoperta rinforzata professionalmente lungo i bordi con intervento reversibile in carta Giappone (Anonymous dedication to a well-know Sicilian painter at the first blank page. DJ professionally restored). Prima edizione (First edition). . Kerouac, Jack, American novelist and poet (1922-1969).
[Orlando, Florida, December 18, 1961. - Large 4to. 1 p. An elliptical and erratic late-night missive betraying wild mood swings and littered with expletives, the present letter to Kerouac's then girlfriend Lois Sorrells opens, "it's now 4 in the mawnin and I've been typing up to 35 pages of manuscript of Big Sur novel [.]". Kerouac asks Sorrells to "Drop me one of yr sweet poetic notes soon, I'm lonely", before he segues into a profanity laced rant against his ex-wife (Joan Haverty Aly) and his having to travel to New York to take a paternity test. He goes on to offer up a reason why he hasn't asked Lois to marry him ("Even you could turn against me in legal marriage"), makes references to mutual friends in New York, then closes with a cryptic admonishment: "I like you for you [.] But you should never again run down the street to yr therapist knocking down innocent women's bags and papers and bump into handsome polite Negro students, hear me?" He also suggests she reread Dostoyevsky's The Possessed for insight into "getting rid of guilt." Kerouac spent several miserable months of 1961/62 in Orlando, where he and his mother had moved to escape the embarrassment caused by Aly's public claims that Kerouac had fathered a child with her. (As a result of the paternity test, Kerouac was ordered to pay child support.) See Charters, Brother-Souls, pp. 305 ff. - Some toning, a few light smudges to margins and tiny tear to one edge, folding creases.

ASEA ABOARD THE USS SHANGRI LA: (1961). 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is a super, original group of two [2] 1961 diaries and journals of a noted aircraft carrier's Mediterranean shakedown cruise handwritten by Jim Dickinson, RDSN, [a radar man] aboard the storied USS Shangri - La. Commissioned in 1944, the Attack Carrier Shangri-La participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II, earning two battle stars. Like many of her sister ships, she was decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s, and redesignated as an attack carrier (CVA). She operated in both the Pacific and Atlantic/Mediterranean for several years, and late in her career was redesignated as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS). She earned three battle stars for service in the Vietnam War. Between 1961 and 1970, Shangri-La alternated between deployments to the Mediterranean and operations in the western Atlantic, out of Mayport. She sailed east for her first tour of duty with the 6th Fleet on 2 February 1961, and this is the handwritten account of her first, we believe, Mediterranean tour. The 6 by 3.5 inch diaries are each approximately 146 pages, the first book being full, second perhaps half are a real below deck 'swabbie' account, much on drunken nights, fights and police chases, a lot of shakedown blues, lousy chow, heads that don't work and the like, and a modicum of writing about actual duties by a personable US Navy Serviceman. Overall G.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good
