1961. Click here to view a short video presentation. untitled- theme is: Little Girl with her birthday party presents.(Children's animation & illustration art- mid 20th century). Great piece of modern art with a very strong and attractive mid-20th century aesthetic. One of a kind, looks worthy of a professional television animation film, a children's book or art museum setting. Scene shows the party girl in her party dress, still opening her birthday gifts which include a record player, a new chalkboard, small transistor radio, a Calder mobile, a telescope and stuffed tiger. Created early 1960's, likely 1961-63, perhaps New York City. In the style of the Duvoisins, No name anywhere, anonymous, but clearly a very talented artist with a great personal style. Wonderful mid-20th century original art relating to childhood. Wonderful technique and aesthetic style, reminiscent of Hanna-Barbera Studio and Flintstones & Jetson cartoons, sure to draw favorable and admiring attention where ever hung. Light old glue reside or tape staining at top edge or across bottom, both easily/ readily matted out if desired by framer. Surface appears as painted, any flaws trivial. Board measures c. 11" x 13 7/8".[V1259].

Diter Rot (Dieter Roth)
Stedelijk Museum, 1961. Exhibition poster for Dieter Roth's famous show Bewogen Beweging (Moving Movement), that premiered at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam on March 10, 1961. Poster is backed with fiberboard and measures 39 x 28 inches (approx. 100 x 70 cms). Printed in b&w, with 80 die-cut holes (diameter 1.25 inches). Slight bowing toward the middle of the poster; small loss to paper at the corners; other small areas of loss at the edges of a few circles. Very Good or better. Possibly a mockup, as it was purchased from the original buyer directly from Roth's studio. Further, there is a faint printed line that runs vertically and horizontally through the middle of the piece, leading us to believe that Roth used this as a draft. Other versions of this poster have appeared in European auctions, but those were for the thin paper poster only, not backed. Roth's poster embraced the sense of movement, as the holes cause the eye to dance around the page. Additionally, each one that was hung would look different, as the holes exposed the surface behind. Acquired from the estate of Janet Ferrell, who was a musician based in Pittsburgh. She was friendly with La Monte Young and John Cage and participated in performances of many of their works. While working at the Carnegie Institute (now known as the Carnegie Museum of Art) she was publicity director for the 1964 Pittsburgh International Art Exhibit and organized and administered the first Carnegie International Film Festival. She also served the Carnegie as assistant to director Leon Arkus. In her later life she was a deacon and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Heller, Joseph
Simon & Schuster, New York, 1961. Third printing of Heller's classic first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Boldly signed by Joseph Heller on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. "Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177). Basis for the 1970 film directed by Mike Nichols. The cast included Alan Arkin, Bob Balaban, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Olimpia Carlisi, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford, Charles Grodin, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Paula Prentiss, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight, and Orson Welles.
