McMURTRY, Larry
Harper, (1961). Hard Cover. Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #024130 McMurtry's first book, one of A.C. Greene's "50 best books on Texas," basis for the movie Hud, and winner of the Jesse H. Jones Award from the Texas Institute of Letters for the best novel of the year. Horseman, Pass By, which takes its title from the closing lines of William Butler Yeats's poem "Under Ben Bulben" (as did Mary McCarthy's first novel, Cast a Cold Eye), was a breakthrough in Texas literature and in regional literature in general: by telling a raw, unadulterated story entirely fitting to its contemporary West Texas setting, McMurtry not only brought the regional novel out of its quaint gentility but gave it a universality it could not have had otherwise; it has been called a West Texas Catcher in the Rye, with the caveat that the lives of Texans in general were a little more crude than those of the Easterners in Salinger's novel. Faint foxing to foredge and endpages; still a very near fine copy in a very near fine, lightly rubbed, price-clipped dust jacket. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings. GREENE, Graham
London: Heinemann, 1961. London: Heinemann,, 1961. Presentation copy to the woman who prepared the typescript Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver, publisher's device to rear cover in blind. With the dust jacket. Page extremities lightly toned, otherwise a very good copy in like jacket, toned with brown mark to rear panel, price-clipped (possibly for Greene's presentation), very light rubbing and nicks at extremities. First edition in English, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author "For Mrs Jolly from Graham Greene", the recipient having prepared the typescript of the novel. Graham Greene's tricky handwriting (well-known to booksellers and collectors) posed problems for preparing the typescripts of his novels. The manuscript of A Burnt-Out Case was rendered even more difficult through extensive corrections to the text. Greene therefore came up with a solution - he read out the manuscript, which was recorded, with the recordings then typed up by his secretary and assistant Josephine Reid. Greene then corrected Reid's typescript, which was then sent to Jolly, to be typed up professionally. Jolly also typed up his brother Hugh's books, and also those of John Wyndham, Agatha Christie, and others. In common with other Greene titles of this period, the Swedish, Norwegian and French translations of A Burnt-Out Case were all published prior to the English edition, in 1960. The Swedish edition Ütbrand was translated directly from Greene's manuscript and is accepted as being the true first edition. The present UK ed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Isherwood, Christopher
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1961. First edition of this novel from the author of Goodbye Berlin and what many consider his finest novel. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Vincente Urbistondo, with my best wishes Christopher Isherwood Oct 22 1967." Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Bremen, 1928. The Greek Islands, 1932. London, 1938. California, 1940. Four portraits, four settings, four narrators all named Christopher Isherwood. Here are the postcards home from a spiritual tourist looking for a new mode of life as well as a new place to live while Europe, and then the world, moves relentlessly toward war. Which of the guides he encounters can lead him to a better future? The businessman, the utopian, the guru, the geisha? Published in 1961, Down There on a Visit is based on material from a proposed epic that would also have incorporated The Berlin Stories. It is now widely regarded as the most accomplished of Isherwood's novels. "This is probably Isherwood's best novel. It offers the sheer pleasure of writing completely personal and yet completely controlled, radiant with observation, never wasting a word, funny and sympathetic" (Stephen Spender, The New Republic), [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

1961. Condition: Ottime condizioni. PRIMA EDIZIONE RUSSA FELTRINELLI / FELTRINELLI RUSSIAN FIRST EDITION. [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Graham Greene
Heinemann. Graham Greene - A Burnt Out Case - First UK Edition 1961 - SIGNED to Dorothy Craigie A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1961. A near fine book signed and inscribed to Greene's former lover and collaborator Dorothy Craigie (nee Dorothy Glover) on the day of publication (For Dorothy/with love from/Graham/Jan. 1961). In a near fine unclipped wrapper with a little wear to the extremities. Graham Greene (1904-1991) and Dorothy Glover (1901-1971) met in the spring of 1939 when he rented a studio from her in Mecklenburg Square for writing. Sherry 1994). Glover later began a career as a children's book illustrator under the name Dorothy Craigie. She collaborated with Greene on many children's books, among them: The Little Train, Eyre and Spottiswoode, The Little Fire Engine, The Little Horse Bus, The Little Steamroller: A Story of Adventure, Mystery and Detection. Many of these works were translated into French, German, Swedish, Dutch and Italian in the 1950's. In the mid-1950's Craigie branched out on her own as both an author and i … [Click Below for Full Description]
