Juster, Norton; Feiffer, Jules
New York: Epstein & Carroll, 1961. First edition of this modern classic. Octavo, original blue cloth, cartographic endpapers, illustrated by Jules Feiffer. Signed by both Norton Juster and illustrator, Jules Feiffer on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. A superior example, rare and desirable signed by both Juster and Feiffer. "This book has been described by Naomi Lewis as ‘the best original modern book in the Carroll line'" (Carpenter & Prichard, 409). Anyone with an appreciation for the language and irony of Alice in Wonderland will consider this witty adventure a classic. The novel begins with a miserably bored lad who exclaims that "there is nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." Suddenly a tollbooth appears in his room, and, having no other interests, the lad Milo drives through it and sets off in his toy car for a mythic journey.

Brooks, Juanita
Glendale, CA: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1961. 404pp. Octavo [24 cm] Light blue cloth with dark blue printed title on backstrip. The extremities are moderately bumped and rubbed, there are a couple of very short splits in the cloth at the head of the backstrip, and there is a bit of trivial soiling on the covers. The threads of the signatures are just barely revealed in the inside margins of the text block in several places, however the sturdiness of the text block is not affected. Released a year prior to the red cloth trade edition. The correct first edition, issued in only a minuscule printing of 209 copies, none were offered for sale. They were given to descendants of John D. Lee as well as to friends of the publisher and author. This true first printing omits the last three paragraphs on page 376 regarding Lee's reinstatement to membership in the Mormon Church. Scarce edition of this important work. Americana Century 35. Joseph Heller
First edition, first printing, published by Simon and Schuster (New York, 1961). Book condition: near fine. Reddish topdye has a few minor nicks and may be a touch faded. Binding is only slightly separated at rear between rear endpaper and text block, but it is still holding well. The boards are gorgeous, square and bright. Great example. Dust jacket condition: near fine, perfect but for some light edgewear to spine ends with no loss. Crinkling at bottom of spine also extends a bit into the bottom of the front panel. A truly stunning example of this susceptible jacket, with price of $5.95 present on front flap, and jacket is now protected in a removable mylar sleeve. Warsaw, Wydanwnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej, 1961. First Edition. First Impression. A true first edition, preceding the first English-language edition by nearly a decade. Uncommon. One of the finest works in the speculative genre. A highlight of any science fiction collection. Adapted for film three times, the best perhaps being the 1972 adaptation. The book itself is near fine with just the slightest wear to the edges, one closed tear and crease to the rear, upper spine tip and another short closed tear (4mm) to the top of the jacket. Two longer closed tears to the lower spine (25mm & 15mm). A wonderful book. In Andrews and Rennison's 100 Must-Read SF Novels [p86]. [Music]: [CAGE, John]
np [Living Theatre?], 1961. First Edition. Broadside poster, 14" x 8.5". Printed recto only in black and purple. 11 lines. Some faint staining and toning to edges, largely unobtrusive and not effecting any text. About very good. Very good -. Original promotional poster announcing a reading by John Cage to celebrate the publication of SILENCE. Released in October 1961, Cage's seminal first book is also almost certainly his most important. Part poem, part aesthetic meditation, part essay, part musical composition, it remains ahead of its time. This poster adevertises a reading from one of the pieces from the book At Judith Meline and Julian Beck's Living Theatre, an important venue for Cage where he frequently performed. OCLC does not locate any holdings, though we are aware of one at Northwestern. An ephemeral production from a significant event. [Attributes: First Edition]

HELLER, Joseph
Simon and Schuster, 1961. First Edition. Little needs to be said about this novel; it's one of the 20th century's most enduring works of fiction. Basis for the comical 1970 film directed by Mike Nichols, starring Alan Arkin, Bob Newhart, and Martin Balsam. A very nice copy of the first edition, in a somewhat problematic jacket. First Printing. Octavo (22cm); blue cloth with titles stamped in white on the spine; orange topstain; dustjacket; 443pp. Some rough erasure to front endpaper, else Near Fine, with the topstain still bright and without any rubbing or flaking to the white spine lettering. Dustjacket is unclipped, with rubbing and wear to the panels and along the edges, a few shallow chips at spine ends and cornertips, some short edge tears, and several clear tape mends on the verso; just Very Good. Kennedy, Jacqueline; Robert McNamara And Dean Rusk. [John F. Kennedy]
1961. Rare original photograph of the swearing-in ceremony of President John F. Kennedy's cabinet on January 21st 1961. Signed by Jacqueline Kennedy, Robert S. McNamara, and Dean Rusk. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 17 inches. Kennedy brought to the White House a contrast in organization compared to the decision-making structure of former-General Eisenhower; he selected a mixture of experienced and inexperienced people to serve in his cabinet including Robert McNamara, who was well known as one of Ford Motor Company's "Whiz Kids" as Secretary of Defense and Dean Rusk, a restrained former Truman official, as Secretary of State. Unlike Eisenhower, Kennedy did not have a chief of staff, but instead relied on a small number of senior aides, including appointments secretary Kenneth O'Donnell.
