Burgess, Anthony
London Heinemann 1961. A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1961. A fine book without inscriptions (hint of spotting to the page edges), in a fine unclipped wrapper. A simply superb copy. The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to amend all unsold copies of the book but actually sought to pulp them. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

J.R.R. Tolkien
George Allen and Unwin, London. Allen and Unwin. All 1961, A lovely set, above average condition jackets and books. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear, especially to the jackets. Slight tattering to jacket spine ends and corners, slight darkening to the spines. Unclipped. TT has small dent to cover edge though not noticeable. RotK jacket has slightly more wear than the other two. Books are clean, bindings tight. Cover clean, gilt titles bright. Slipcase has fading to the label, small stain to side and worse for wear on the corners. As good as you are likely to find for 1961 set which we can say with confidence as specialist in Tolkien books. Please ask for more photos. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

ROBERT FRANK, ALFRED LESLIE, JACK KEROUAC and ALLEN GINSBERG
Grove Press and Evergreen Books, New York, 1961. Signed by the following people who appeared in or were involved with the production of the film in1959 Pull My Daisy: Robert Frank, Allen Ginsberg, David Amram (Music), John Cohen (the still photographer for the film), Larry Rivers and Alfred Leslie. Pull My Daisy is a 1959 short film that typifies the Beat Generation. Directed by Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, Daisy was adapted by Jack Kerouac from the third act of a stage play he never finished entitled Beat Generation. Kerouac also provided improvised narration. It starred Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Larry Rivers, Peter Orlovsky, David Amram, Richard Bellamy, Alice Neel, Sally Gross and Pablo, Frank's then-infant son. Based on an incident in the life of Neal Cassady and his wife Carolyn, Pull My Daisy tells the story of a railway brakeman whose painter wife invites a respectable bishop over for dinner. However, the brakeman's bohemian friends crash the party, with comic results. Pull My Daisy was praised for years as an improvisational masterpiece, until Leslie revealed in 1968 that the film was actually carefully planned, rehearsed, and directed by him and Frank. The book is fairly scarce because many copies were destroyed in a fire at Alfred Leslie's studio. An excellent near fine copy. Front cover is lightly rubbed. Fleming, Ian
Jonathan Cape, London, 1961. First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Boldly signed by Sean Connery on the title page. Connery played 007 in the film bearing the same name. Contemporary name to the front free endpaper, near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket art by Richard Chopping. "Thunderball represented a new departure [for the Bond series], with the introduction of SPECTRE and of Ernst Blofeld, a commanding villain who was to reappear. This gave a measure of continuity to the later Bond novels Thunderball worked well as an adventure story the theme of the theft of atom bombs seemed pertinent and modern" (Black, 49, 55). "A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read" (New York Times). It was adapted twice to the screen: under the present title in 1965 and as Never Say Never Again in 1983—each time starring Sean Connery. [U.S. Presidents]: [John F. Kennedy]: [Photography]
[Washington, D.C.]: [1961]. Collection of sixteen gelatin silver prints and eight color photographs on heavy stock. Each measuring 10" x 8" approx. All curling at edges. Slight toning to black-and-white prints. Color prints mildly faded. Very good or better overall. very good +. Taken Veteran's Day, November 11, 1961, these images document Kennedy's first presidential visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The president was accompanied by Major General Paul A. Gavan, Commanding General of the Military District of Washington, as well as the VA administrator John S. Gleason, and military aides General Chester Clifton, Colonel Godfrey McHugh, Captain Tazewell Shepard, and National Commander of the Legion of Valor Thomas Stirling. These images document the president's participation in the Veterans Day ceremony, including laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and speaking to a crowd of more than 5,000 at the Memorial Amphitheater. This speech, perhaps a justification for the United States' increasing involvement in Vietnam, was a message of peace through war: "In the end, the only way to maintain the peace is to be prepared in the final extreme to fight for our country - and to mean it. As a nation, we have little capacity for deception. We can convince friend and foe alike that we are in earnest about the defense of freedom only if we are in earnest -- and I can assure the world that we are.".

Various: United Nations Television, 1961-1967. Various: United Nations Television. 1961-1967. Nineteen 16mm films with sound (some color, some black and white) , each from 25-29 minutes long. Very good: most with typical outgassing from period film stock as usual; of the five films that have been digitized, four of them had to be spliced. Image quality varies: the color film is a bit off hue, one of the black and white films is blurry and the sound cut out halfway through Fabio's Journey; we note that Costco was used for digitization and believe all media would benefit from expert restoration. This is a collection of films produced by the United Nations for its United Nations Television series, “International Zone. ” It began airing on at least 58 television stations in the United States in late 1960 or early 1961 with many of the episodes hosted or narrated by Alistair Cooke. The countries shown in this collection include Senegal, Singapore, Ecuador, Peru, the Congo, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Venezuela. An inventory of the films including their titles is available, along with any information we have been able to glean about the ones we have not digitized. The series presented a wide range of issues. It ran to at least 99 episodes and is now all but forgotten. Most in this group depict poverty-stricken regions adapting to the infrastructure assistance they received from the UN. A few relate purely to culture and one film describes the project that led to the adoption of the World Heritage Foundation. Acc … [Click Below for Full Description]
