Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri; Adolfo Ventrui
Banca Popolare di Bergamo, 1961. The Bible of Borso d'Este is a two volume manuscript of illuminated miniatures executed between 1455 and 1461 by a team of artists directed by Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi. In 1923, the businessman Giovanni Treccani acquired in Paris, for the enormous sum of 5 million lire, the Borso d'Este Bible, that was due to be sold in America, and donated it to the Kingdom of Italy. On his initiative, various other copies have been created. The original miniatures are held in the Biblioteca Estense di Modena. Every page of the Bible is decorated with an elegant frame of scrolls and other ornaments, surrounding two columns of texts. The margins contain various scenes, especially in the lower parts, where one often finds scenes drawn in perspective, borrowing from advances in painting of the time. Scenes are also depicted between the columns of text, usually next to the capital or illuminated letters. In the volutes in the corners, there are often animals, depicted with lively imagination that is part of the courtly style of the time, and often tied to heraldic symbols of Borso and his family. Borso d'Este (1413-1471) was Duke of Ferrara, and the first Duke of Modena, which he ruled from 1450 until his death. He was a member of the House of Este. This high quality reproduction is bound in full-leather with a silver ornate emblem applied to the front of each volume and housed in velvet slipcases. The approximately 1,300 page manuscript is reproduced primarily in black and white with 12 sheets reproduced in colour and gold. The introductory text is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Caidin, Martin
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1961. New Enlarged Edition. Orange cloth over boards with titling in silver on spine. Very good/good +. SIGNED "M. Scott Carpenter, Gus Grissom, Alan B Shepard, John Glenn Jr., Walter W. Schirra Jr, Gordon Cooper Jr., Donald K Slayton" on free front endpaper in various inks. Carpeter's signature appears to have been signed in pencil then traced over, possibly for aesthetic reasons. These autographs show evidence that it was early in their career, The mostly signed with full name, middle initial and "Jr." in three cases, which many lost over time as autographs became more requested. 8" x 5.5", pp. 5-224,with B&W photos and illustrations throughout. Text block is clean, with some dark fade on portions of the end paper. DJ has wear at the extremities, along the edges and small tears at the front edges of the spine, now appropriately protected in mylar. Caiden was a prolific author, especially on subjects of aviation, aeronautics and science fiction. This early book about the dawn of the space race chronicles the details of the U. S. Space Program and the men who dared. Provenance: Original owner was Hal Richey, Commander of the Naval Weapons Test Center in China Lake, CA. His name and address is in pencil on rear end paper. Adjacent to Edwards Airforce Base, the China Lake facility is where the astronauts trained and flew. As Manager of the facility it is likely he had first person access to these astronauts. "On May 5, 1961, the United States sent its first man into space, when Astronaut Alan B Shepard rocketed upward from Cape Canaveral, Florida, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Illustrated by Marc Chagall. Franz Meyer
Abrams, New York, 1961. Marc Chagall. Life and work. DELUXE EDITION, with a colored etching with aquatint by Chagall. By MEYER, Franz. N.Y., Abrams. 1961. One of the 100 numbered copies of the EDITION DELUXE with the book guarded in the original red cloth box, and a colored etching with aquatint, numbered in pencil, in a separate portfolio. The book is complete with dust jacket and includes many illustrations and mounted plates in colors, signed in pencil by Chagall in colophon. The colophon mistakenly describes the print that accompany the deluxe edition as a lithograph instead of the etching with aquatint that Chagall especially made for this edition (Cramer n. 48) The Etching comes in a separate portfolio in red cloth matching the box where the book is guarded, and is numbered in pencil on the left bottom corner. Anthony Burgess
Heinemann, London UK, 1961. A scarce ex libris novel in good condition with an unclipped dust jacket. The Worm and The Ring was written following Burgess's time at Banbury Grammar School in the 1950's. The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of the school. Several characters in the book were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Bustin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected.  The publisher, Heinemann, agreed to "amend all unsold copies of the book" although  many were just pulped. Original dark maroon boards with gilt lettering on the spine. East Sussex library stamp imprinted on the rear board. Light bumping to the edges. Ex libri stamp with ripped section on the front paste down. Ripped section of the rear paste down. Ink lettering on the front free page. Stamped date on the rear free page. The contents are generally clean, lightly browned with some brown marks and spotting on several of the pages. Surprisingly clean for an ex libris copy. The dust jacket is clean with wear to the edges. Creases on the front flap. Minor chipping in a few places. 8vo 273 pp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Henry Miller
1961. Miller, Henry & Shapiro, Karl (Introduction) - Tropic of Cancer - Grove Press: New York, 1961 - First American Edition / First Printing / First Issue Dust Jacket - "First Printing" stated on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first American edition. Correct first issue dust jacket with no Roman numerals. The book has rubbing to the spine ends and tips along with general shelf wear. The spine has the slightest of roll but is not serious. The dust jacket has a linear blue stain from a very old brodart (which has obviously since then been removed and replaced), light scattered staining and shelf wear with rubbing and some closed tears. This is a still bright and attractive example of the correct first printing dust jacket with no publisher's Roman numerals which appear in the later printings. This copy has a Henry Miller signature which has been tipped onto the title page. Also on the title page, Karl Shapiro has signed this copy with an incredible inscription reading: "Michael Hargraves: The / introduction is one of my / proudest writings. / Karl Shapiro / 12/8/81". Michael Hargraves has signed, dated, and located this, his personal copy, with great flourish on the front end page. This is the part of the description that gets the most interesting. Michael Hargraves, who owned this copy, and to whom it was inscribed by Shapiro, was an author, Hollywood screen writer, and most importantly (to this cataloguer) a bibliographer. Among his many bibliographies were studies on Robert Grover, Harry Crews, and most importantly Henry Miller … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erwin Schrodinger
Paul Zsolnay, Hamburg; Vienna, 1961. pp 180 Schrödinger's last book, inscribed by his widow to the first post-war German Ambassador in Vienna, Carl Hermann Mueller Graaf. Anne Marie Schrödinger inscribed the book after her husband's death on the first blank to 'Ir Excellenz Herr Botschaffer Dr Mueller-Graaf . Dankbarkeit Anne Marie Schrödinger - Wein, im Oktober 1962.' The book is near fine with a little bump at the head of the upper board and a small blue mark to the foreedge, in a very good jacket, a couple of very short tears to the edges of the jacket. Schrödinger wrote this final almost metaphysical work following his return to Vienna in 1956 at the close of a remarkable career during which he won the Nobel Prize for developing a number of fundamental results in the field of quantum theory. In popular culture Schrödinger is best known for his 'Schrödinger's cat' thought-experiment. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information.
