PEAKE, Mervyn
Maurice Michael, 1961. 4to. pp. 82. In manilla binder. Contemporary xerox copy of the typescript produced for Mervyn Peake?s drama agent Maurice Michael in around 1961. With a typed covering note regarding the authentication by Maeve Gilmore of this copy. The typescript was produced from the author?s manuscript [now in the British Library]; a small number of copies were made for circulation to potential directors and theatre management. Rare. Only a small handful of copies have emerged over the last 40 years, this is the second which I have handled. Peake wrote at least 10 plays, only one of which, ?The Wit to Woo? was produced in his lifetime, to poor reviews. In his introduction to the facsimile reissue of The Cave in 1995 Brian Sibley writes ?It is not difficult, perhaps, to see why The Cave was never staged: it is a highly problematic piece of theatre - not because of its bizarre, ritualistic style or its eccentric structure, more suggestive of a series of tableaux than a conventional three-act play - but because of its bleak, almost nihilistic, philosophy.?

Nickelsen, John:
[Click Below for Full Description]

Fleming, Ian
Jonathan Cape, London, 1961. First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To C.D. Jackson who says nice things! from Ian Fleming." The recipient Charles Douglas Jackson joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in 1943 and the following year he was appointed Deputy Chief at the Psychological Warfare Division at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), and it was during this time Fleming, working for Britain's Naval Intelligence Division, likely would have met Jackson. After the war, Jackson worked for Life Magazine, and at the time of Thunderball's publication, had become the magazine's publisher. Several years after Jackson's death in 1964 it was revealed that he had been a CIA agent since 1948. An exceptional association of two important figures in the British/American nexus of World War II and Cold War intelligence operatives given its fullest embodiment in the popular imagination through Fleming's enduring spy avatar James Bond. Gilbert A9a (1.1). Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Jacket art by Richard Chopping. "Thunderball represented a new departure [for the Bond series], with the introduction of SPECTRE and of Ernst Blofeld, a commanding villain who was to reappear. This gave a measure of continuity to the later Bond novels Thunderball worked well as an adventure story the theme of the theft of atom bombs seemed pertinent and modern" (Black, 49, 55). "A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read" (N … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.R.R.Tolkien
George Allen & Unwin, 1961. The Lord of The Rings (The Fellowship of The Ring / The Two Towers / The Return of the King), J.R.R.Tolkien, George Allen & Unwin, First Editions (10th/8th/7th Impressions) A very good Lord of The Rings first edition set with unclipped original dust wrappers, protected in transparent removable covers. Of major literary significance and spawning a number of box office breaking movies. First edition sets in very good condition are rare. The binding is tight and straight across all volumes, the boards are clean and bright with minor marks, the endpapers and pages are clean and free from marks, tears and foxing. The top edges have largely retained the red tint. The unclipped dust wrappers, protected in transparent removable covers, have the usual toning associated with these cream wrappers after 60+ years. The first volume dust jacket has some wear and chipping to the front and rear folds, minor loss to the rear base and general minor rubbing. The other two dustjackets are very good with minimal wear. Each volume has the same gift inscription to the first blank page. Notably this was bought and has been retained as a set, unlike many sets offered for sale today which can have significant inconsistencies of condition across the three volumes. The inscription date is the same for each and the impressions are all the latest for that date. A rare find and wonderful gift to the Tolkien fan or book lover, and great as a family heirloom or potential investment. FOUCAULT Michel
1961. First edition. 8vo (205 x 140mm). xi, [1], 672, [12] pp. Original printed card wrappers, edges untrimmed, illustrated dust jacket after Goya (jacket covered with laminate plastic film as issued, slightly coming away at head of spine panel, with some minor rubbing to the extremities, otherwise a near fine, partially unopened copy). Paris, Librairie Plon. Michel Foucault's first major work, the most famous exposition of his archeological method and one of the most important works of twentieth-century social and political thought. Written as Foucault's primary doctoral thesis, Folie et Déraison charts the development of discourses surrounding ?madness? and ?insanity? in Western European culture from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance to the ?Great Confinement? initiated during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the subsequent development of ?mental illness? as a psychiatric concept. Foucault's ?madness? or déraison (?unreasoning?) appears as contingent, a discursive formation of relations of power and knowledge, emerging from the Enlightenment onwards as the primordial, indescribable other against which scientific modernity defines the rational, ?reasonable? self. The book exercised a significant influence on the so-called ?anti-psychiatry? movement, appearing contemporaneously with R. D. Laing's The Divided Self (1960), Erving Goffman's Asylums (1961), and Thomas Szasz?s The Myth of Mental Illness (1961). Foucault himself was cautious regarding this association, citing a tendency towards the misapplication of his work in anglophone contexts. [Attributes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mantle, Mickey and Roger Maris
Two black and white photographs from circa 1961 of Mickey Mantle and Rogers Maris. Each is inscribed to their 1961 teammate Billy Gardner. The Mantle photograph is signed, "To Billy My Best Wishes, Mickey Mantle." The Maris photograph is signed, "To Bill, Best wishes to a hell of a nice guy, Roger Maris." A nice association linking these teammates from the World Series champions. The 1961 Yankees are often mentioned as a candidate for the unofficial title of greatest baseball team in history. The 1961 Major League Baseball season was notable for the race between center fielder Mickey Mantle and right fielder Roger Maris to break Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season (set in 1927). Maris eventually broke the record, hitting his 61st home run on October 1, the season's final day. During the season, Maris had seven multi-home run games; in a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox, he hit four home runs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

LEVEQUE (Jean-Jacques) [dir.].
Hastings House, New York, 1961. First edition, first printing. Near Fine cloth-bound hardcover with a touch of rubbing along the edges and a light bump to two tips in a Near Fine price-clipped dust jacket with a touch of soiling, light crimping along the top edge, and tanning to the spine. A nice copy. All dust jackets are protected by a clear mylar cover. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. A monograph of work by Ladislav Sutnar with his commentary and theoretical ideas. The book covers every aspect of his career and of course, being a graphic designer, he was involved in every aspect of its high-quality production including the layout, illustrations, and jacket design. Sutnar was a Modernist designer and one of the visionaries of what is today called "information design." He is best known for his total design concept for the Sweets Catalog Service and lesser known for introducing the parenthesis as a way to typographically distinguish the area code from the rest of a phone number. He was hugely influential in the world of modern graphic design. Text and design by Ladislav Sutnar; production supervised by Sutnar; preface by Mildred Constantine. Unpaginated [188 pages]; 36 pages of full-page color illustrations + 342 b&w illustrations; 8.75 x 12.5 inches. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

LAUREL, STAN. Original Typed Letter Signed by Stan Laurel. Santa Monica, CA: May 2, 1961. Original Typed Letter Signed by Stan Laurel referencing his Honorary Oscar win for his creative pioneering in the field of cinema comedy. Unfortunately, he was not present at the awards ceremony, where presenter Danny Kaye accepted the award on his behalf. The letter reads in full: "May 2nd, 1961 - Dear Joe, Thanks yours, April 18th. with enclosure of news clip ('Daily Express!). Needless to tell you I am very thrilled & happy to receive the Oscar, such a wonderful tribute - only wish poor old Babe [his partner, Oliver Hardy] had been there to share this great honor which he helped make possible. Thanks for your encouraging wish for my return back to the Business - am afraid my clowning days are over, Joe, frankly, I have no desire, am very happy & content in my retirement. After all, I'm in my 'Roaring 70's' now - 'wot could be fairer or squarer than that'?!!. Bye Joe - appreciate your kind sentiments. Trust alls well with you. Take care & God Bless. As ever: Stan Laurel". The letter is typed on printed stationery from the Oceana Apartment Hotel in Santa Monica, CA, measuring 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", with minor creases from folding and a hint of age toning. A sweet correspondence from this most singularly gifted and kind man. Stan Laurel died a few years later on February 23, 1965 in Santa Monica at the age of 74. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

FLEMING, Ian.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. Octavo. Original dark brown boards, spine lettered in gilt, skeletal hand motif on front board blocked in blind (Gilbert's binding A). With the dust jacket. Negligible wear to spine ends, very light foxing to edges and endpapers; a fine copy in the price-clipped jacket, faint stain to foot of spine, very minor nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression, of the ninth Bond book. Ian Fleming's novel Thunderball incorporated material from an unproduced screenplay he had worked on in 1958 in collaboration with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ivar Bryce, with the result that Fleming found himself in a well-publicised case in the High Court defending himself against McClory's accusations of plagiarism, though Fleming and McClory eventually settled out of court. Africa: 1961. Fine. Hardcover. Two string-tied oblong albums measuring 14" x 12" and 14" x 10". A collection of 295 black and white or color photographs affixed to stiff black paper measuring 2.25" x 3.5" to 6.5" x 8.5", with captions. Both albums are fine with fine photographs. Two photo albums from a colonial police officer with squad 39/60 while serving in Northern Rhodesia from 1961, before independence, to 1965 when Zambia was formed. Both albums are extensively captioned with hand drawn maps as well as ephemera tipped-in and kept as documents detailing his time in Africa. The first album begins, "on the afternoon of 4 February 1961 I flew out over the coast of Sussex in a Vickers Viscount of British United Airways bound for Northern Rhodesia." It shows photos of the barracks and recruitment offices as well as squadrons of officers including some native Africans used as constables who had historically been allowed reluctantly to participate in the police force by the British. The album shows the leisure time at the barracks as well. Here officers are shown playing Karamoja, an African version of Rugby, with native Rhodesians, playing guitars and singing at the mess hall. At the Ndola location police can be seen participating in riot drills and parades. The "main location," as it's captioned, included a mosque, market, and a Catholic church. The second album starts in 1962 with a trip to "visit friends in Fort Rosebery" which includes a hand drawn map of the territory. The photos show men standing around the officers club before returning to their posts. One page shows … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burgess, Anthony
London Heinemann 1961. A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1961. A fine book without inscriptions (hint of spotting to the page edges), in a fine unclipped wrapper. A simply superb copy. The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to amend all unsold copies of the book but actually sought to pulp them. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
