This beautiful book, with over 100 instructive illustrations, is revolutionary in its approach because: It leads the cook infallibly from the buying and handling of raw ingredients, through each essential step of a recipe, to the final creation of a delicate confection. It breaks down the classic cuisine into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of recipes; the focus is on key recipe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Heinlein
Putnam. fine/near fine in very good dj. On offer Robert Heinlein (1961) 'Stranger in a Strange Land', first edition AND first printing, published by Putnam. Signature by Heinlein loosely laid in. All first print issue points are present. No indication of reprint on copyright page; C22 on page 408; correct first state dust jacket. Condition: the book is in excellent fine condition with only the slightest of shelf wears. Everything is clean, no annoying inscriptions of any sorts; no lean, no smudges; no foxing, nu bumps. Corners sharp, nice green top stain as called for; vibrant lettering on spine. The dust jacket is very good, it is NOT clipped and shows minor creases, a few close tears and minor chipping to the folds' edges. Now protected in removable mylar. When you will be doing your research you will find a great many copies that have annoying inscriptions; some tape on board, smudges, tears etc. In comparison this is one of the nicest copies currently on offer. 'Stranger in a Strange Land' is next to 'Starship Troopers' Heinlein's best known and most popular novel. It won the 1962 Hugo Award. Heinlein is a science fiction legend together with Arthur C Clarke; Philip K Dick; Frank Herbert; and Isaac Asimov. Heinlein won five Hugos and was nominated eleven times. No other science fiction author has matched that record to date. First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

1961. Facsimile. This facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible is one of the truly great works of art in the publishing world in the last century. It was produced by Pageant Books of Paterson, New Jersey in 1961. The highest quality paper and printing techniques were used to produce a true work of art and a book that will last for many centuries. I've been privileged to own this two volume set for a couple of years now and would gladly keep it for the rest of my life, but I have run out of storage space for my books so am reluctantly letting it go. If you are a collector of fine books and have the space to display them, they will make a fine addition to your library. Size of each volume is roughly 17 inches by 12 inches. Each volume weighs about 26 pounds. Condition is truly excellent for these two books. I treated them with great care. You will see other facsimiles of the Gutenberg Bible for sale at a much cheaper price, but they can't begin to equal the quality of these books! Shipped with USPS Media Mail.

Maurice Sendak
1961. Maurice Sendak SIGNED limited edition lithograph, featuring an image from "Little Bear's Visit" a book that Sendak issued with author Else Holmelund Minarik by Harper and Brothers in 1961. I assume this undated piece came out to correspond with the release of the book. This is #117 of 500 produced "for the friends of the author and the artist." Extremely early and uncommon. The Little Bear books are considered classics and have remained in print since they first came out. The lithograph is glued at the top edge to a browned paper with a window cut out. I believe both sheets were not produced using archival paper and have not aged well. There is major sunning to both. The litho is 9" x 12" approximately. The sheet it is glued to is 11" x 14" approximately. Also, included is an extra folder (with an window cut) to house the litho, but it is useful only for historical purposes.

JACKSON, Martha and George Brecht, Jim Dine, Walter Gaudnek,
New York: Martha Jackson Gallery, 1961. First Edition. Thin narrow quarto, stapled. Exhibition catalogue for a show at Martha Jackson Gallery, held from May 25 through June 23, 1961. Contains artist statements by George Brecht, Jim Dine, Walter Gaudnek, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenberg, and Robert Whitman. A seminal show of downtown avant-garde work that would soon be labeled as "Pop Art" (though Jill Johnston worried in a Village Voice review that Martha Jackson had lost her commercial acumen). Especially notable for an early version Oldenberg's "Store" concept, explained in his most well known piece of writing, the Gisnberg-esque beat manifesto "I Am For...". Oldenberg's "The Store" would open as a fully realized concept on 2nd Street later the same year. Some significant creasing, chipping and overall wear, chiefly along the page-edges; very good in printed wrappers. Nonetheless a scarce survival; OCLC locates two copies. [Attributes: First Edition]

CLAUSER, John A.
[Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1961. Fine. Original painting. Measuring 29.75" x 23" in 37.75" x 31.5" frame. A couple dings to the wooden frame, else fine. Signed by the artist John A. Clauser ("Clauser") in the lower right corner. An attractive painting of an ACME supermarket from the early Sixties with period cars parked in the foreground and appropriately garbed patrons (nearly all women in dresses) walking to and from the store. Though undated it was likely painted for ACME in 1961 when the company debuted its new "A" frame style stores and new teardrop logo (leaving behind its original script logo of the 1950s). This is likely one of the original architectural designs with a label on the rear that reads: "John A. Clauser / registered architect / 2036 Rittenhouse Sq."

Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri; Adolfo Ventrui
Banca Popolare di Bergamo, 1961. The Bible of Borso d'Este is a two volume manuscript of illuminated miniatures executed between 1455 and 1461 by a team of artists directed by Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi. In 1923, the businessman Giovanni Treccani acquired in Paris, for the enormous sum of 5 million lire, the Borso d'Este Bible, that was due to be sold in America, and donated it to the Kingdom of Italy. On his initiative, various other copies have been created. The original miniatures are held in the Biblioteca Estense di Modena. Every page of the Bible is decorated with an elegant frame of scrolls and other ornaments, surrounding two columns of texts. The margins contain various scenes, especially in the lower parts, where one often finds scenes drawn in perspective, borrowing from advances in painting of the time. Scenes are also depicted between the columns of text, usually next to the capital or illuminated letters. In the volutes in the corners, there are often animals, depicted with lively imagination that is part of the courtly style of the time, and often tied to heraldic symbols of Borso and his family. Borso d'Este (1413-1471) was Duke of Ferrara, and the first Duke of Modena, which he ruled from 1450 until his death. He was a member of the House of Este. This high quality reproduction is bound in full-leather with a silver ornate emblem applied to the front of each volume and housed in velvet slipcases. The approximately 1,300 page manuscript is reproduced primarily in black and white with 12 sheets reproduced in colour and gold. The introductory text is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scott Carpenter, Gus Grissom, Alan B Shepard, John Glenn Jr., Walter W. Schirra Jr, Gordon Cooper Jr., Donald K Slayton" on free front endpaper in various inks. Carpeter's signature appears to have been signed in pencil then traced over, possibly for aesthetic reasons. These autographs show evidence that it was early in their career, The mostly signed with full name, middle initial and "Jr." in three cases, which many lost over time as autographs became more requested. 8" x 5.5", pp. 5-224,with B&W photos and illustrations throughout. Text block is clean, with some dark fade on portions of the end paper. DJ has wear at the extremities, along the edges and small tears at the front edges of the spine, now appropriately protected in mylar. Caiden was a prolific author, especially on subjects of aviation, aeronautics and science fiction. This early book about the dawn of the space race chronicles the details of the U. S. Space Program and the men who dared. Provenance: Original owner was Hal Richey, Commander of the Naval Weapons Test Center in China Lake, CA. His name and address is in pencil on rear end paper. Adjacent to Edwards Airforce Base, the China Lake facility is where the astronauts trained and flew. As Manager of the facility it is likely he had first person access to these astronauts. Anthony Burgess
Heinemann, London UK, 1961. A scarce ex libris novel in good condition with an unclipped dust jacket. The Worm and The Ring was written following Burgess's time at Banbury Grammar School in the 1950's. The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of the school. Several characters in the book were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Bustin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected.  The publisher, Heinemann, agreed to "amend all unsold copies of the book" although  many were just pulped. Original dark maroon boards with gilt lettering on the spine. East Sussex library stamp imprinted on the rear board. Light bumping to the edges. Ex libri stamp with ripped section on the front paste down. Ripped section of the rear paste down. Ink lettering on the front free page. Stamped date on the rear free page. The contents are generally clean, lightly browned with some brown marks and spotting on several of the pages. Surprisingly clean for an ex libris copy. The dust jacket is clean with wear to the edges. Creases on the front flap. Minor chipping in a few places. 8vo 273 pp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
