In 1940, he competed with Chevrolet, winning the Grand Prix International Championship and devoted his time to the Argentine Turismo Carretera becoming its champion, a title he successfully defended a year later. Fangio then competed in Europe between 1947 and 1949 where he achieved further success. He won the World Championship of Drivers five times--a record which stood for 47 years until beaten by Michael Schumacher--with four different teams (Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Maserati), a feat that has not been repeated. A member of the Formula 1 Hall of Fame, he is regarded by many as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time and holds the highest winning percentage in Formula One - 46.15% - winning 24 of 53 Formula One races he entered. Salinger, J.D
New York: Little, Brown, and Company, 1961. First edition, second printing of Salinger's third book. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by Salinger on the front free endpaper to a personal friend, "Oke, Stop over sometime, JDS 8/26/61." While Salinger was known for his reclusive behavior with regard to the spotlight of the international press, he did have close relations with the local townspeople around his New Hampshire home, who respected his privacy. This inscription shows the authentic nature of those relationships. Affixed to the verso of the front panel and front free endpaper are three newspaper clippings regarding Salinger's reputation as a recluse later in life, including a clipped article from the Boston Herald, Thursday, April 25th, 1991, "Salinger breaks silence to refuse award" regarding Salinger's refusal to accept a Lillian L. Poses Creative Arts Award in 1991 and a clipped Q. & A. regarding news of a fire at Salinger's hilltop home in Cornish, New Hampshire. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Books signed by Salinger are scarce. Salinger's short story Franny and novella Zooey first appeared in The New Yorker in 1955 and 1957 respectively. Both stories center on the two youngest members of the Glass family of New York's Upper East Side, Franny takes place in an unnamed college town during Franny's weekend visit to her boyfriend. Set shortly after Franny, Zooey takes place in the Glass family Manhattan apartment where Franny is suffering from an existential breakdown. Both stories echo Salinger's own disillusi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reeves, Rosser
New York: Borzoi/ Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. First trade edition, published after the privately printed Ted Bates edition. Octavo, original blue cloth, slipcase. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "With a promise that this is a very short, short book! Rosser Reeves Oct 8, 1962. Fine in the original glassine wrapper in a fine slipcase. Rare signed. Rarely has a book about advertising created such a commotion as this brilliant account of the principles of successful advertising. Published in 1961, Reality in Advertising was listed for weeks on the general best-seller lists, and is today acknowledged to be advertising's greatest classic. It has been translated into twelve languages-French, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, German, Italian, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Hebrew-and has been published in twenty-one separate editions in fifteen countries. Leading business executives, and the advertising cognoscenti, hail it as "the best book for professionals that has ever come out of Madison Avenue." (For typical comments see back of jacket.) Rosser Reeves says: "The book attempts to formulate certain theories of advertising, many quite new, and all based on 30 years of intensive research." These theories, whose value has been proved in the marketplace, all revolve around the central concept that success in selling a product is the key criterion of advertising. In the course of explaining his own hard-headed approach, Mr. Reeves shows why the ad campaigns for many products are just so much money poured down the drain. He has some devastating things to say ab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gorey, Edward
London: Constable, 1961. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Gorey, Edward. First printing of the first UK edition, sixmo size, 60 pp., signed by Edward Gorey. Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) is well-known and well-loved for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative. This work, "The Gorey Alphabet", is the first printing of the British edition of "The Fatal Lozenge" (same book with a different title). While "Lozenge" was first published as a paperback the year prior (in 1960), this British version was published as a hardbound book (which was issued without a dust jacket) for which Gorey provided two original illustrations for the front and back covers; therefore, the boards differ from the "Lozenge" wraps. "Lozenge" / "Gorey Alphabet" was Edward Gorey's first published alphabet book. "Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a character which appears in a four line poem (Apparition, Baby, Cad, Drudge, etc.), each poem being accompanied by a single illustration. Apart from being in alphabetical order, the individual poems do not relate to each other, but rather each turn of the page reveals a new personage who is involved in some sordid activity or misfortune" (n.b., from the web site of the Goreyana Blogspot). As with most of Gorey's work, one winces a bit at the macabre story but cannot stop also laughing, nor can one stop reading.... ___DESCRIPTION: Illustrated paper-covered boards, two original illustrations by Gorey on the front and back in three colours, black lettering on the front and spine, this volum … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fangio, Juan Manuel
London: Temple Press Limited, 1961. First edition, early printing of the racing legend's autobiography. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated throughout. Boldly signed by Juan Manuel Fangio on the title page. Foreword by Stirling Moss. Bookplate, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Michael Turner. In collaboration with Marcello Giambertone. Books signed by Fangio are rare. Juan Manuel Fangio was an Argentine racing car driver. He dominated the first decade of Formula One racing, winning the World Drivers' Championship five times. From childhood, he abandoned his studies to pursue auto mechanics. In 1938, he debuted in Turismo Carretera, competing in a Ford V8. Fangio is the only Argentine driver to have won the Argentine Grand Prix, having won it four times in his career--the most of any driver.
