Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Kennedy, John F
1961. Rare collection of original invitation materials from events held upon the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. The collection includes an official "Inauguration Ceremonies" program, a green admission pass marked "Senate Steps" admitting the bearer to the Senate Wing Steps, a blank "Inaugural Concert" ticket order form with envelope, and photographic portraits of John F. An exceptional collection. Held on January 20th, 1961, the Inauguration of John F. Kennedy marked the commencement of Kennedy's only term as President and of Lyndon B. Johnson's only term as Vice President. Kennedy's inaugural address encompassed the major themes of his campaign and would define his presidency during a time of economic prosperity, emerging social changes, and diplomatic challenges. Kennedy's inauguration was the first in which a poet, Robert Frost, participated in the program. [Attributes: First Edition]

Isherwood, Christopher
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1961. First edition of this novel from the author of Goodbye Berlin and what many consider his finest novel. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page in the month of publication, "For Peter, at the beginning of what I hope will be a long and happy association, from his friend, Chris, January 28, 1962." The recipient was the author's Simon and Schuster editor Peter Schwed and a close friend of Isherwood's. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the crown of the spine. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. An excellent association. Bremen, 1928. The Greek Islands, 1932. London, 1938. California, 1940. Four portraits, four settings, four narrators all named Christopher Isherwood. Here are the postcards home from a spiritual tourist looking for a new mode of life as well as a new place to live while Europe, and then the world, moves relentlessly toward war. Which of the guides he encounters can lead him to a better future? The businessman, the utopian, the guru, the geisha? Published in 1961, Down There on a Visit is based on material from a proposed epic that would also have incorporated The Berlin Stories. It is now widely regarded as the most accomplished of Isherwood's novels. "This is probably Isherwood's best novel. It offers the sheer pleasure of writing completely personal and yet completely controlled, radiant with observation, never wasting a word, funny and sympathetic" (Stephen Spender, The New Republic), [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

[Click Below for Full Description]

In letter form, Moncrif discusses the role of cats throughout history and his work can be read both as a satire of pedantic academic writing and a sincere tribute to the domesticated feline. "Let us calm ourselves ... one day we shall see the merits of Cats generally recognized. It is impossible that we should not come to feel that in our Cat we possess a friend who is the best of company, an admirable Pantomimist, a born Astrologer, a perfect Musician, in short the union of the talents & the graces" (p. 104-5).From the library of Thomas Yoseloff, the last owner of the Golden Cockerel Press, by family descent, but with no ownership markings.#2097283

London: Faber & Faber, 1961. IN PARENTHESIS: seinnyessit e gledyf ym penn mameu Signed by famous Poet T.S. Eliot and Author David Jones. Shipped worldwide with UPS, requiring signature. Special edition with new introduction by T.S.Eliot. Number 3 of 70 copies signed by both Eliot and Jones. Publisher's blue buckram with grey blocking and gilt lettering. A fine copy with just a trace of wear to the edge of the gilt and a mark on the cover, see picture. This deluxe reissue of Jones's most celebrated work, which takes the form of an epic prose poem set in the first world war, based on the author's own experiences in the trenches was published at the behest of Faber director T.S. Eliot, who admired the work from its first publication in 1937 and in whose introduction he lauds the book as "a work of genius". It is the opinion of a professional book seller in London familiar with this book that copy #3 must have belonged personally either Jones, Eliot or the Publisher, but this cannot be confirmed at this time. Copy #1 sold for over $6750 in December of 2019. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
