Language: Italian; Latin. ISBN: No ISBN. The Bible of Borso d'Este is a two volume manuscript of illuminated miniatures executed between 1455 and 1461 by a team of artists directed by Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi. In 1923, the businessman Giovanni Treccani acquired in Paris, for the enormous sum of 5 million lire, the Borso d'Este Bible, that was due to be sold in America, and donated it to the Kingdom of Italy. On his initiative, various other copies have been created. The original miniatures are held in the Biblioteca Estense di Modena. Every page of the Bible is decorated with an elegant frame of scrolls and other ornaments, surrounding two columns of texts. The margins contain various scenes, especially in the lower parts, where one often finds scenes drawn in perspective, borrowing from advances in painting of the time. Scenes are also depicted between the columns of text, usually next to the capital or illuminated le … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boston: Houghton Mifflin. Condition: Near fine / fine. Signed. Octavo, 304pp. A near fine copy, clean, and bright, with only trivial shelfwear at the bottoms of the boards. Spine almost imperceptibly cocked. Dust jacket about fine, possibly a tad sunned on the spine, but with original $3.95 price intact, and no other notable flaws. A desirable association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Halberstam on the front free endpaper in the year (possibly month or even day) of publication: "For Lee - who's father made me write this: you better like it. From friend David March 20 [?] 1961." Clearly some close association, we had trouble confirming who exactly Lee (or his father) was. A Lee Winfrey was a contemporary of Halberstam's at the Nashville newspaper in the late 1950s when he got his start covering civil rights. Winfrey had a long career in journalism, ending up at the Philadelphia Inquirer. The book is dedicated to "the Zibarts," but we were unable to find a Lee Zibart. Halberstam, who died prematurely in an auto accident, never published a memoir that might have shed light on this curious inscription. Regardless, a somewhat mysterious, though obviously warm inscription on the author's first book - a novel - which would soon be followed by some of the great popular histories of the 20th century. A particularly sharp and attractive copy, to boot. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Berman, Wallace
San Francisco: Batman Gallery, 1961. 15 x 20", lithograph in two colors on beige paper. The striking poster designed by Wallace Berman, for an exhibition by George Berms at Batman Gallery in San Francisco. This was the first poster to be designed by Berman, and features a photograph by him of Herms standing beside one of his early assemblages. The exhibition was held in the same year that Herms returned to San Francisco, and that the Bermans returned to Crater Lane, where they lived nearby the Billy Jahrmarkt - the proprietor of the Batman Gallery. An iconic poster for a key moment in West Coast assemblage. Rebecca Solnit discusses the imagery of the poster as it relates to the new avenues that the Batman and other galleries opened up for west coast beat artists in the following passage, from Secret Exhibition: , "... Robert Hudson and George Herms both had their first significant solo shows there. Herms's opened in May of 1961 and Berman did the poster for it, with a bearded and tough-looking Herms in motorcycle regalia next to a huge assemblage. Berman had convinced the shy twenty-six-year-old that if he was going to be an artist, he was going to have to have shows. The new galleries began to change the odds for artists; work now had a chance of being shown, seen, and even sold." [Secret Exhibition, pp. 74-75]. See also Support the Revolution, p. 176. Overall creasing, with some light shallow chipping to extremities, as well as several small closed tears, the longest being 1 1/2", else very good.

Atlanta Georgia: Protestant Radio and Television Center. 1961. 7” diameter reel to reel tape in original mailing box, 60 minutes of audio. Box very good with handwritten notes in crayon, tape reel very good with some scuffs and scratches. An audio interview of some of the founders of the Atlanta Student Movement. In February, 1960 after Julian Bond and Lonnie King discussed the possibility of organizing sit-ins in Atlanta, the presidents of all six colleges of the Atlanta University Center (“AUC”) encouraged them to create a document that defined their position. With several others, they created the Committee on Appeal for Human Rights which drafted “An Appeal for Human Rights. ” It stated that “today's youth will not sit by submissively, while being denied all of the rights, privileges, and joys of life” and laid out multiple societal areas where they sought to end segregation and discrimination. The document was signed by the president of each student body of the AUC and published in Atlanta newspapers on March 9, 1960. The sit-ins began less than one week later, and led to the wave that occurred October 19th, where Lonnie King and Martin Luther King, Jr. Were arrested at Rich's department store. It was the first time MLK would spend the night in jail, despite earlier arrests. ASM members Lonnie King, Herschelle Sullivan, Ben Brown and Charles Black were interviewed on June 8, 1961 by an unidentified man. In a wide ranging discussion the members discussed ASM's purpose and structure, its accomplishments and goals, and a number of other issues. They exp … [Click Below for Full Description]
