Printed recto only in black and purple. 11 lines. Some faint staining and toning to edges, largely unobtrusive and not effecting any text. About very good. Very good -. Original promotional poster announcing a reading by John Cage to celebrate the publication of SILENCE. Released in October 1961, Cage's seminal first book is also almost certainly his most important. Part poem, part aesthetic meditation, part essay, part musical composition, it remains ahead of its time. This poster adevertises a reading from one of the pieces from the book At Judith Meline and Julian Beck's Living Theatre, an important venue for Cage where he frequently performed. 1961. [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Miller
Grove Press, 1961. The Rare Book Collection of the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography Tropic of Cancer (1934) By Henry Miller First Grove Press Edition (1961), First Printing Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928) By D.H. Lawrence First Grove Press Edition (1959), First Printing DESCRIPTION: The 1-2 knockout punch by Grove Press that singlehandedly eliminated America's existing obscenity laws, ushering in the countercultural era. Grove Press owner Barney Rossett thought it would be easier to "chip away" at the current obscenity laws by starting with a classic piece of literature, so in 1959 published the first US version of D.H. Lawrence's 1928 Lady Chatterley's Lover, cleverly including quotes from respected academic intellectuals so that the courts would be forced to allow him to include them as character witnesses during the resulting obscenity trial. After this success, he followed up two years later with Henry Miller's much more incendiary Tropic of Cancer, originally published in Europe in 1934; eventually reaching the Supreme Court, it was the much more famous and lasting example that essentially permanently changed the definition of obscenity in the US. It's nearly impossible to find both these books available for sale as a set, so collectors would be wise to jump on this right away. (Shipped for free via 2-Day Priority Mail, with signature confirmation added unless otherwise requested.) CONDITION: Tropic of Cancer: Text: Fine (F). Still essentially in the same condition as when it appeared brand-new. Dust jacket: Very Good (VG). Still in strong, tight shape, but … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nickelsen, John:
[Click Below for Full Description]

Frantz Fanon
Paris: 1961. Anniroc Rare Books ________ The Black Panther Bible Les Damnés de la Terre[The Wretched of the Earth] Frantz Fanon Paris, 1961 First trade edition following 250 numbered copies for subscribers. Publisher's stiff wrappers. One of the key works of the famed French West Indian psychiatrist philosopher - much of which was written in the spring of 1961, as he was dying of leukemia. It's influenced revolutionaries across the globe in Africa, Palestine, Bangladesh, and here in the U.S.(Eldridge Cleaver called it the bible of the black revolutionary movement). A pretty rare book, and when it does appear, it's usually tattered beyond wretchedness. The covers are rubbed around the edges and have general wear, top edge a bit dusty, a lengthy Spanish inscription on the half-title. The interior is fresh otherwise and the book is square and sound. A Very Good copy. "The favorable reception of The Wretched of the Earth needs to be understood in terms of the movements of decolonization in the postwar world. The steady, ineluctable retreat of European colonialism evoked a feeling of excitement and expectancy throughout Asia and Africa. For a time all things were believed possible; it was the dawn of a new age, of a new chance for humanity. It was at the apogee of this wave of enthusiasm that The Wretched of the Earth was published. The forcefulness of its language, its condemnation of colonialism, and justification of armed resistance elicited an immediate response throughout the Third World. The book echoed the hopes and fears of its times, and it did so with an idealism that … [Click Below for Full Description]
