1961. 1st Edition "Memoirs of Stonewall Jackson" By His Widow Mary Anna Jackson, Illustrated. Book is in great condition considering the age with a few blemishes (shown in photos). The real beauty of this particular copy is that it belonged to Robert A Smyth of Charleston, SC who was the son of James Adger Smyth, mayor of Charleston, SC and fought with Company A of the 25th Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers under General Hagood.... Mr Robert A Smyth went on to be the Commander in Chief of the Sons Of Confederate Veterans, given the date of release of this book and the dates of his presidency - this book was in the personal library of the Highest ranking member of the organization who's mission is to "encourage the preservation of history, perpetuate the hallowed memories of brave men, to assist in the observance of Confederate Memorial Day, to aid and support all members, widows and orphans, and to perpetuate the record of the services of every Southern soldier." This is a very important piece to the preservation of confederate history and culture for many reasons, not the least of which, whose personal library it belonged in until his death in 1961. Presented as such, hoping to find a home for the person who wishes to perserve this history. As the history of the confederacy continually becomes erased, items like this will become increasingly important to remember where our country has been. Accepting the first reasonable offer. Thanks for looking and happy bidding, Floatin' Goat. [Attributes: First Edition]

Holland, Thomas. [William Shakespeare]
1961. Sculptural bust of the greatest dramatist in literary history, William Shakespeare. Faux antique bronze, mounted on a walnut base. Signed by the artist, "T. Holland" on the rear of the bust. Best remembered as a sculptor and avid polo player, California native Thomas Holland created a variety of bronze pieces primarily depicting equestrian themes and major literary figures. The entire piece measures 15 inches tall. In near fine condition. A unique piece. English poet, playwright, and actor, William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. His extant works consist of approximately 38 plays and 154 sonnets. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright to this day. Shakespeare's early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best work ever produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies including Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth; and in his late phase wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Marker, Chris
Editions du Seuil, 1961. First edition. 8vo, unpaginated. Illustrated with b/w photographs. With the original printed wraparound band flattened and laid in. The scarce first edition of this artists' book printed from maquettes designed by Marker himself, which combines the spoken portion of several of his early films, matched with stills and found images, and predates the release of La Jetée the following year. The present work is one of the most brilliantly designed books of the early 1960's, and would directly inspire Richard Hollis' design for John Berger's Ways of Seeing a decade later, as Hollis described in a 2006 interview in The Eye: "The influence was Chris Marker's book Commentaires, which has stills set within the text. I was a fan of Marker's films. . . you read you knew exactly what was being talked about. It was a substitute for description: instead of talking about something, you show the objective visual evidence." Later reissued in 1967 with a companion volume in an altered design, and with Marker's design credit removed, this original edition is very scarce in the trade, especially in fine condition and with the band intact. This is a square, uncreased copy, with some minor dustiness to the top edge of the text block, else fine- the nicest example we've seen. [Attributes: First Edition]

This auction is for a first edition and first printing of the 1961 culinary classic "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" by Simone Beck, Louisette Bertholle and Julia Child. This meets the points of the first edition and first printing, as the copyright page indicates "FIRST EDITION" in bold lettering with no printing date, while the authors' note page is dated August 1961. This includes the original paper dust-jacket, which has the original price of $10.00 on the inside front. The dust-jacket shows some wear, especially near the top, where there is a small piece torn out in the front and in the back. The inside of the book is in very nice condition with no significant staining, bent pages or wear. There is no writing inside the book. This book appears to have seen little, if any, use in the kitchen or anywhere else. Please consult the photos for an accurate representation of the condition, and please feel free to ask any questions. This fantastic book represents an important milestone in the history of culinary publishing, and it is highly unusual to find one that retains its original dust-jacket. This would make the perfect gift for any fan of the legendary Julia Child, or the ideal addition to your rare cookbook collection. I would like to receive payment within 1 week unless other arrangements have been made before the auction's end. If you win more than one item, I will be glad to combine shipping whenever possible. Please email me if you have any questions about the payments we accept. Thanks for looking! [Attributes: First Edition]

Greene, Graham
Heinemann, London, 1961. First edition of this Greene novel set in a leproserie on the upper reaches of a tributary of the Congo River in Africa. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Anthony Hobson from Graham Greene." The recipient Anthony Hobson, auctioneer and book collector, was a director at Sotheby's and friend of Greene's. He successfully organized the sale of the Greene's manuscripts at Sotheby's in 1964. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Dust jacket design by Lacey Everett. Greene dedicated A Burnt-Out Case to Docteur Michel Lechat, a medical doctor at a leper colony in Yonda in Africa (one of a number of such colonies Greene had visited in the Congo and the Cameroons, which had inspired his novel). In his dedication to Lechat, Greene writes: "Doctor Colin has borrowed from you his experience of leprosy and nothing else. Doctor Colin's leproserie is not your leproserie. From the fathers of your Mission I have stolen the Superior's cheroots--that is all, and from your Bishop the boat that he was so generous as to lend me for a journey up the Ruki." In reference to the characters in the novel, Greene writes: "It would be a waste of time for anyone to try to identify Querry, the Ryckers, Parkinson, Father Thomas--they are formed from the floatsum of thirty years as a novelist." Commenting on his literary intentions in the work, Greene wrote that it was, "an attempt to give dramatic expression to various types of belief, half-belief, and non-belief, in the kind of setting, removed from world-politics and house-hold-preocc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

(Tomatsu, Shomei and Domon, Ken); Yukawa, Hideki (Preface); Maruki, Iri and Maruki, Toshiko (Painting)
Japan: The Japan Council against A & H Bombs, 1961. Hardcover. Very good. Tomatsu, Shomei and Domon, Ken. Square quarto size, [140] pp. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States have led to numerous examinations of the war, violence, and death surrounding the attacks. "document 1961" is a collection of haunting photographs by two brilliant and acclaimed Japanese photographers, Shomei Tomatsu (1930-2012) and Ken Domon (1909-1990). The photographs capture the rawness and vulnerability of the people and landscape after the bombings, with images that are often dark and up-close to their subjects. The work of Tomatsu and Domon is separated by a three-page fold-out painting, printed in purple, by husband and wife Iri and Toshiko Maruki; the paintings show several panels of bodies, distorted and indistinguishable, matching the gritty tone of the photographs. ___DESCRIPTION: Full white cloth with grey spiral designs on the front and rear boards, grey lettering on the spine, endpapers with black-and-white photographs, title page in brown, black-and-white photographs by Shomei Tomatsu and Ken Domon throughout, including one three-page fold-out monochrome painting in purple by Iri Maruki and Toshiko Maruki; square quarto size (11" by 11"), 140 unnumbered pages. ___CONDITION: Volume is very good, with a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; cloth boards have overall light soiling, very light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, corners are gently bumped, and there is one small crease to a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vostell, Wolf and François Dufrêne
Wuppertal: Verlag der Kalender, 1961. Large square octavo (29.3 × 30.5 cm). Original stiff printed wrappers; Chinese-style folded leaves; ca. 64 pp. A few stains and light toning to wrappers; internally very good. Collaborative bookwork by Vostell, a leading exponent of Décollage, and Dufrêne, a leading Nouveau Réaliste artist and writer, consisting of concrete poems by Dufrêne accompanied by 23 original screenprints by Vostell in black and white, with additional textual material by Jouffroy at rear. A strikingly beautiful work, with typographical flourishes throughout as well as screenprints with subtle gradations of grey tones. A radical and monumental work, hinting at influence by the "Affichiste" Mimmo Rotella, and prefiguring the proliferation of concrete and visual poetry and works incorporating words in the subsequent decade. Unstated limited edition (an authoritative source informs us that 300 copies were printed). As of November 2019, KVK and OCLC locate only five copies in North America. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Ian Fleming
London: Jonathan Cape Ltd, 1961. 1961 First Edition / First State (Jonathan Cape Ltd)Original Unclipped Richard Chopping Designed Dust JacketA superb example of Thunderball by Ian Fleming; published in 1961 by Jonathan Cape Ltd. (No other publication dates)The book is in near fine condition - black clothed hardback cover with skeletal hand motif to front board and gilt lettering to spine. No issues other than very minor bumping at spine foot. The interior is clean and white throughout and has no age related issues whatsoever. I would class the condition as fine other than for the one issue which is a red book shop stamp at the foot of the front paste down page. The leaf ends are also perfectly white and give the book an extremely attractive tidy appearance. The spine and binding are fine and book is tight. The dust jacket is the correct version for this book and is in very good + condition with only a couple of issues to note that prevents me stating it as near fine. The front cover has some faint rubbing at the top edge and there is some small marks at the very edge top and bottomof rear flap. The one real issue of note is some rubbing and chipping at spine top. (See Photos) There is no sun related damaged and the covers and flaps are clean, bright and unmarked. The front flap has a blurb about this book and Ian Fleming; this continues to rear flap. The price is unclipped showing as 15s. net at the foot of front flap.
