New York: George Brazziller, 1961. Book is in excellent condition. Dust cover in very good condition. This first edition book was published in 1961 by George Braziller, New York, and printed in France. The book has 153 pages and it includes four original lithographs, one of which is in 24 colors, created by Picasso especially for this book, 103 full page reproductions, along with English text by Jaime Sabartes. It measures 13" X 10" and is in excellent condition. The dust cover has a tear (approximately 2") along the edge of the spine and several small nicks at the top edge (as shown in photo #2), but is otherwise in very good condition. We purchased the book in the late 1960's and it has been carefully stored in our library in a smoke free, temperature controlled environment since that time and rarely viewed. The specific titles of the 4 lithographs are as follows: LA PIQUE LE PICADOR II (COLOR) JEU DE LA CAPE LES BANDERILLES. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Eichmann, Adolph & Huasner, Gideon et al.
District Court of Jerusalem (1961), [Jerusalem]. This is a collection of what appears to be separately issued session minutes of the trial of Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann. They are translations of the German and Hebrew into English; typed on a European manual typewriter, then mechanically reproduced via Gestetner spirit duplication onto a blue 8.5" X 13" blue wove paper and bound into 6 period ACCOPRESS Binders. The pages have been 3 hole punched on one side for binder storage. As these are quite rare, so is any bibliographical information; it is assumed these were collected by a reporter or a judicial official or military observer while attending the trial. These pages cover the trial of a powerful nazi war criminal who either feigned or actually believed he was not responsible for the attempted extermination of all Jews. Ironically, the trial was not broadcast in Israel, even though this was really the first time the world had such a succinct and horrific description of the nazi atrocities. Israel at the time was being challenged by some for even for having Eichmann in custody. Much pressure was on Gideon Hausner and the judges to effect a professional and legal trial; though Eichmann's fate was sealed years before. The collection contains sessions 1 - 114 with additions, but lacks; sessions 7 & 8 which contain 63 pages (of 99) Gideon Hausner's opening statement, chapters 1 - 6 (63 pages), picking up again at chapter 7 - 12 (36 pages). This covers the whole trial up to the break for deliberation/verdict. There is only one mark in Hebrew ? found in the whole collection of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Greene, Graham
London Heinemann 1961. A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1961. A near fine book signed and inscribed to Greene's former lover and collaborator Dorothy Craigie (nee Dorothy Glover) on the day of publication (For Dorothy/with love from/Graham/Jan. 1961). In a near fine unclipped wrapper with a little wear to the extremities. Graham Greene (1904-1991) and Dorothy Glover (1901-1971) met in the spring of 1939 when he rented a studio from her in Mecklenburg Square for writing. At the time she was working as a theatre costume designer in London. They began and affair shortly after, Greene moving in with Glover as his family was in the countryside. During the Blitz of London in 1940-1941, Glover and Greene both served as neighborhood fire wardens. By 1946 his loyalty and interest in the affair was decreasing, but they continued to live together until the summer of 1948, when he moved into an apartment adjacent to Catherine Walston's, who he had met and begun an affair with the year before (cf. Sherry 1994). Glover later began a career as a children's book illustrator under the name Dorothy Craigie. She collaborated with Greene on many children's books, among them: The Little Train, Eyre and Spottiswoode, The Little Fire Engine, The Little Horse Bus, The Little Steamroller: A Story of Adventure, Mystery and Detection. Many of these works were translated into French, German, Swedish, Dutch and Italian in the 1950's. In the mid-1950's Craigie branched out on her own as both an author and illustrator, publishing many children's books through Max Parrish (from Ge … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanislaw Lem
Warsaw: Wydanwnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej, 1961. Warsaw: Wydanwnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej. Warsaw, Wydanwnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej, 1961. Paperback. Near fine. Precedes the first English-language edition by nearly a decade. Uncommon. One of the finest works in the speculative genre. A highlight of any science fiction collection. Adapted for film three times, the best perhaps being Tarkovsky's 1972 adaptation. The book itself is near fine with just the slightest wear to the edges, one closed tear and crease to the rear, upper spine tip and another short closed tear (4mm) to the top of the jacket. Two longer closed tears to the lower spine (25mm & 15mm). A wonderful book. In Andrews and Rennison's 100 Must-Read SF Novels [p86]. [7836, Hyraxia Books]. . Near Fine. Offprint from BALANCED LIVING (Dec. 1961) of a speech delivered at Quaker House in Chicago on March 15, 1956, concerning the Montgomery bus boycott. This address gives particular attention to the radical aspects of non-violent action in Montgomery. An anarchist, activist, and pacifist, Joffre was also involved in the Beat movement of the 1950s, published a volume of poetry and is mentioned by name in Allen Ginsberg's HOWL ("with big pacifist eyes sexy in their dark skin passing out incomprehensible leaflets"). Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

ENGLAND, John A
np: [ca. 1960-1961]. Hardcover. Oblong folio commercial album measuring approximately 10.5" x 14.5". Green faux-leather covered boards, string bound. 24 card leaves, 21 with 77 black and white snapshot photographs, each measuring approximately 5" x 3.5", recto mounted loosely in corners. Final 3 leaves blank, an additional 3 photographs laid-in; 80 prints total. Hand-painted title illustration to first endpaper, two vignette scenes on first and fourth leaves. Mild edge wear to album exterior, otherwise generally near fine. Near fine. Album belonging to Sergeant John A. England, United States Army, from his 1960 trans-Pacific cruise aboard the U.S.N.S. General Edwin D. Patrick, a WWII-era transport ship based out of San Francisco. A contingent from the Republic of Korea Navy was aboard and the album focuses heavily on the Korean sailors and their interactions with American servicemen. A brilliant, hand-painted title illustration in acrylic titled 'ROK NAVY' and two additional vignette works in the same medium illuminate the album. The images are clear and well composed, creating a significant record of U.S.-Korean relations and of the Edwin D. Patrick, which was the longest surviving of the P2 carriers in the U.S. fleet, launched in 1945, decommissioned in 1968 and sent to scrap in 2010. [Attributes: First Edition]

Martinelli, Ezio
Martinelli, Ezio. Figurines . An inkless embossed print with stippled engraving in brownish-red. The image measures 11 inches x 17 ¼ inches, on a 16 3/8 inches x 22 3/8 inches sheet. Signed, titled, dated 1961 and limited by the artist in graphite. Unframed, untrimmed and not matted. Ezio Martinelli (1913 – 1980) opened a new dimension in printmaking with this print. As a sculptor and welder, Martinelli experimented with plates, piercing and welding both copper and aluminum, which seemed to be the best choices, despite technical difficulties, for printmaking. A welded plate produced the gaufrage, after the reddish-brown color had been transferred from a lucite plate. The textural result is a sculptor's contribution to the canon of techniques available for creating prints on paper. Martinelli studied in his native Italy and in the United States at the National Academy of Design and at the Barnes Foundation. He exhibited at the Whitney Museum in New York as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Carnegie Institute. His works are in the collections of the Whitney Museum, the Philadelphia Museum, and various other museums. He held several teaching positions in the United States. IGAS Series No. 47, January 1962.

A triumph for the Soviet space program, the flight sparked interest around the globe and mass demonstrations held in Moscow and other major cities throughout the reached a scale second only to the World War II victory parades. Less than one month after Gagarin's momentous flight, on May 5, 1961, American astronaut Alan Shepard piloted the first American manned spaceflight when he was launched 116 miles above the earth's surface aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft.
