Heller, Joseph
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1961. First edition of Heller's classic first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Association coy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Joseph Collins, a victim & survivor of Catch-22, Joseph Heller." The recipient was a senior United States Army officer who served in World War II in both the Pacific and European Theaters of Operations, one of a few senior American commanders to do so. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the Korean War. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. Bookplate. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Author's photograph by Seymour Linden. An exceptional association. "Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177). Basis for the 1970 film directed by Mike Nichols. The cast included Alan Arkin, Bob Balaban, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Olimpia Carlisi, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford … [Click Below for Full Description]

John McCabe
Doubleday. This is a unique copy of John McCabe's book "Mr. Laurel And Mr. Hardy," published in 1961. It has been signed and dated on both the front and back covers by Stan Laurel. Stan has inscribed it on the first page, as well as the author, John McCabe. More importantly - and what makes this copy unique, is that Stan has written humorous captions on 13 pages of photographs (captioning 20 photographs, in total). For example, next to a picture of Charlie Chaplin with Stan and the rest of the Fred Karno cast, Stan has written "A bunch of limeys!". Above a photo of Oliver Hardy posing with Lubin's football team, he's written "His College Days (San Quentin)!". This book once belonged to radio interviewer Ron Barry, who interviewed Stan and was evidently involved with the formation of the "Sons of the Desert" some time later. Both Stan and McCabe have inscribed the book for Ron (see photos). This book was much loved, obviously. Although I've had plastic on it since the day I got it many years ago, the dust jacket is worn and chipping, with various tears, and looks quite fragile. The autographs on the front and back, though, are largely intact (see photos). The binding is loose, and there's yellow marks from scotch tape where it was once taped to the book itself. There are two photographs glued into the book - both polaroids of Stan's grave. The area around John McCabe's signature is slightly torn - when I got it, there was a piece of paper taped over the signature, so perhaps the two had a falling out - who knows! Mr. Barry has also written in the "filmography" section - indi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gorey, Edward
Constable, 1961. Gorey, Edward. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing of the first UK edition, sixmo size, 60 pp., signed by Edward Gorey. Near fine. Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) is well-known and well-loved for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative. This work, "The Gorey Alphabet", is the first printing of the British edition of "The Fatal Lozenge" (same book with a different title). While "Lozenge" was first published as a paperback the year prior (in 1960), this British version was published as a hardbound book (which was issued without a dust jacket) for which Gorey provided two original illustrations for the front and back covers; therefore, the boards differ from the "Lozenge" wraps. "Lozenge" / "Gorey Alphabet" was Edward Gorey's first published alphabet book. "Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a character which appears in a four line poem (Apparition, Baby, Cad, Drudge, etc.), each poem being accompanied by a single illustration. Apart from being in alphabetical order, the individual poems do not relate to each other, but rather each turn of the page reveals a new personage who is involved in some sordid activity or misfortune" (n.b., from the web site of the Goreyana Blogspot). As with most of Gorey's work, one winces a bit at the macabre story but cannot stop also laughing, nor can one stop reading.... ___DESCRIPTION: Illustrated paper-covered boards, two original illustrations by Gorey on the front and back in three colours, black lettering on the front and spine, this volume signed by Gorey … [Click Below for Full Description]

With the dust jacket. Negligible roll to spine, touch of foxing to top edge; a near-fine copy in the jacket with lightly browned spine, slight nicks to spine ends, creasing and browning to extremities. Ian Fleming's novel Thunderball incorporated material from an unproduced screenplay he had worked on in 1958 in collaboration with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ivar Bryce, with the result that Fleming found himself in a well-publicised case in the High Court defending himself against McClory's accusations of plagiarism, though Fleming and McClory eventually settled out of court. 1961. Facsimile. This facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible is one of the truly great works of art in the publishing world in the last century. It was produced by Pageant Books of Paterson, New Jersey in 1961. The highest quality paper and printing techniques were used to produce a true work of art and a book that will last for many centuries. I've been privileged to own this two volume set for a couple of years now and would gladly keep it for the rest of my life, but I have run out of storage space for my books so am reluctantly letting it go. If you are a collector of fine books and have the space to display them, they will make a fine addition to your library. Size of each volume is roughly 17 inches by 12 inches. Each volume weighs about 26 pounds. Condition is truly excellent for these two books. I treated them with great care. You will see other facsimiles of the Gutenberg Bible for sale at a much cheaper price, but they can't begin to equal the quality of these books! Shipped with USPS Media Mail.

*** [English transla … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Heinlein
Putnam. fine/near fine in very good dj. On offer Robert Heinlein (1961) 'Stranger in a Strange Land', first edition AND first printing, published by Putnam. Signature by Heinlein loosely laid in. All first print issue points are present. No indication of reprint on copyright page; C22 on page 408; correct first state dust jacket. Condition: the book is in excellent fine condition with only the slightest of shelf wears. Everything is clean, no annoying inscriptions of any sorts; no lean, no smudges; no foxing, nu bumps. Corners sharp, nice green top stain as called for; vibrant lettering on spine. The dust jacket is very good, it is NOT clipped and shows minor creases, a few close tears and minor chipping to the folds' edges. Now protected in removable mylar. When you will be doing your research you will find a great many copies that have annoying inscriptions; some tape on board, smudges, tears etc. In comparison this is one of the nicest copies currently on offer. 'Stranger in a Strange Land' is next to 'Starship Troopers' Heinlein's best known and most popular novel. It won the 1962 Hugo Award. Heinlein is a science fiction legend together with Arthur C Clarke; Philip K Dick; Frank Herbert; and Isaac Asimov. Heinlein won five Hugos and was nominated eleven times. No other science fiction author has matched that record to date. First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
