KONEN, Valentina.
Moscow: Sovietskii kompozitor, 1961. Octavo. Original ecru cloth, title to spine and front board in gilt and blue. A little rubbed, slightly cocked, two damp-spots to the rear board, light browning, overall very good. Illustrations and notation to the text, 47 pages of notation at the rear. First edition, first impression, print-run of 5000. Detailed overview of American jazz. Soviet musicologist Valentina Konen (1909-1991) was one of the leading authorities on jazz culture in USSR. Born in Baku she left Russia after the October Revolution and spent 10 years in USA, studying at Juilliard (1924-9) specialising in piano. During her time in America she was part of the circle that gathered around Charles Seeger, who was lecturing at both Julliard and the New School for Social Research. Konen returned in USSR in 1931 to study at the history and theory department of the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1938 with a doctoral thesis on the musical culture in USA. She lectured in the history of foreign music at the Conservatory between 1938 and 1949 also teaching at the Gnesin Music Teachers College from 1944. In 1949 she was accused of being a "cosmopolite" and fired, being exiled to the Urals, where she was a professor at the Urals Conservatory, 1949–51. In 1960, rehabilitated, Konen became a senior research worker at the Institute of the History of the Arts, under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. The somewhat neutral title of this work can be accounted for by Konen's troubled career path, which shadows the vexed history of jazz in the Soviet Union. An attractive … [Click Below for Full Description]

J. R. R. Tolkien
London: George Allen and Unwin, 1961. An original set in very good to very good plus condition with matching age-toning and printings consistent with having been purchased together in 1961. The completeness of the jackets makes this set highly collectible and desirable. A first edition set of J. R. R. Tolkien's masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, dating from 1961. The Fellowship of the Ring, 11th printing 1961; The Two Towers, 8th printing 1961; The Return of the King, 7th Printing 1961. These books were purchased together as a set in 1961, so they benefit from matching aging features such as the toning of the jackets and the printings are all contemporaneous. Published in London by George Allen & Unwin and bound in scarlet cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and Tolkien's fold-out maps of Middle-earth mounted on the rear endpapers. Jacket designs and all illustrations are by the author. These books were adapted into perhaps the most famous trilogy of movies of the 21st century to date and are regularly cited as the greatest fictional writings ever in public polls. The continuing interest in Tolkien's works is exemplified by Amazon's new series in preparation set in Tolkien's Middle-earth in its Second Age. Will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers to preserve their smart condition. Dustjackets will be protected in removable clear cellophane when delivered. CONDITION The Fellowship of the Ring, 11th printing1961, NOT ex-library and very good plus with a firm binding and looking hardly read with clean boards. Horst Antes
[Click Below for Full Description]

Syd Mead, Designer
Chicago IL: 1961. Near Fine condition; Very Scarce. "Concepts," Designs by Syd Mead for United States Steel, 1961, in Near Fine condition. Very Scarce first edition of the ultimate design book by Syd Mead, who was the conceptual artist for the films Alien, Blade Runner, Tron, and several others. Earlier in his career, Mead created a wonderful array of futuristic designs for United States Steel. His space-age cars and urban environments remain awe-inspiring among contemporary viewers. His conceptual illustrations and paintings often are printed on double-page spreads in this 14 x 11 x .5-inch oblong-format book, making them more than two feet in width. The book is in Near Fine condition, with a bumped corner at bottom-front, and only the most minor wear at top and bottom of spine. The book's eggshell-hued exterior shows only slight wear from the decades. The embossed cover is artfully designed, covering 84 pages of mostly colored plates on very heavy stock. This space-age concept book is the ultimate in futuristic design, including one double-page spread that clearly foreshadows Mead's Blade Runner concept. Signature on the verso of the front cover reads: C R Mitchell, 1960. Mitchell later wrote the well-regarded, "The Structure of International Conflict." "Concepts" was created and produced under the direction of the Advertising and Market Development Divisions of United States Steel by the Hansen Company, Chicago IL. [Attributes: First Edition]

Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997)
Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997) - Fantastic content typed letter signed - First wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. From her engagement to the Prince of Wales in 1981 until her tragic death in 1997, Diana was a major presence on the world stage, often described as the "world's most photographed woman" or "The Queen of hearts". Typed letter signed "Diana". 1p., 7.5 x 9.25 inch, 1992 August, on Kensington Palace crested stationery and signed by Diana at the conclusion in black ink. Sent by Princess Diana to the editor of Dragons Magazine. "Dragons" was a magazine published by the Welsh Rugby Union, aimed at younger players & fans of the sport. In full: "I am sure that every Welsh boy who follows rugby has a secret dream that one day he will don the red shirt and run onto Cardiff Arms Park to play for Wales! I have thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the International Matches and I am so glad to see Wales getting back into form. However it was not until I went to St. Helens Club, Swansea, in February and saw the training that I realised that to build up a first class international team we have to start at an early age. This is why I welcome the Dragon Magazine which is aimed to help youngsters to be fit and develop their rugby technique as well as introducing them to the fun of being a member of the team. I hope that all the hard work and efforts by WRU, the Editors and contributors to Dragon as well as those who train our young people in our schools and clubs will find ample reward in the future. I look forward to hearing of your progress." Diana ends the letter with a line of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tomatsu, Shomei and Domon, Ken); Yukawa, Hideki (Preface);
The Japan Council against A & H Bombs, 1961. Tomatsu, Shomei and Domon, Ken. Hardcover. Square quarto size, [140] pp. Very good. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States have led to numerous examinations of the war, violence, and death surrounding the attacks. "document 1961" is a collection of haunting photographs by two brilliant and acclaimed Japanese photographers, Shomei Tomatsu (1930-2012) and Ken Domon (1909-1990). The photographs capture the rawness and vulnerability of the people and landscape after the bombings, with images that are often dark and up-close to their subjects. The work of Tomatsu and Domon is separated by a three-page fold-out painting, printed in purple, by husband and wife Iri and Toshiko Maruki; the paintings show several panels of bodies, distorted and indistinguishable, matching the gritty tone of the photographs. ___DESCRIPTION: Full white cloth with grey spiral designs on the front and rear boards, grey lettering on the spine, endpapers with black-and-white photographs, title page in brown, black-and-white photographs by Shomei Tomatsu and Ken Domon throughout, including one three-page fold-out monochrome painting in purple by Iri Maruki and Toshiko Maruki; square quarto size (11" by 11"), 140 unnumbered pages. ___CONDITION: Volume is very good, with a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; cloth boards have overall light soiling, very light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, corners are gently bumped, and there is one small crease to a corner of the f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cover in very good condition with some light toning and small scuff at top of spine. Spine is square and holds well. Provenance: From the Estate of Nancy Barbato Sinatra (March 25, 1917 - July 13, 2018) Nancy Sinatra Sr. was the first of Frank Sinatra's four wives and the mother of the legendary singer's three children. Nancy Sinatra Sr. was 17-year-old Nancy Rose Barbato, the dark-haired daughter of a Jersey City, N.J., plastering contractor, when she met a skinny, 18-year-old fledgling singer from Hoboken in the summer of 1934 while they were both vacationing on the Jersey Shore. "I was a poor, lonely and discouraged kid when I met her," Frank Sinatra told American Weekly in 1952. "In Nancy, I found beauty, warmth and understanding." They continued dating and the following summer he took her to see Bing Crosby at a theater in downtown Jersey City. "Bing had always been his hero," Nancy recalled in "Frank Sinatra: An American Legend," her daughter Nancy's 1995 book. " 'Someday,' he told me on the way home, 'that's gonna be me up there.' " Frank and Nancy were married Feb. 4, 1939 in a Catholic church in Jersey City where they set up housekeeping in a three-room apartment. The frugal young bride bargain-hunted at the grocery store and sewed her own clothes; she once cut up one of her dresses and used the material to make a bow tie for Frank that would match what he planned to wear on a singing job.
