GREENE, Graham; [GREENE, W. Herbert]
London: William Heinemann, 1961. First British edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author to his eldest brother. Publisher's original black cloth with silver titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips, the contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper which has a few foxing spots to the rear panel. Not price-clipped (16s net to the front flap). Family association copies of Graham Greene's novels are scarce in commerce. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "For Herbert / with love from / Graham". [William] Herbert Greene was the eldest of the four Greene brothers and it could be said he suffered from being an average person in a brilliant family. Throughout his life, the impoverished "black sheep" displayed a deep moral turpitude and opportunism, consorting with remittance men and confidence-tricksters. A regular source of family anxiety and dismay, in the 1930s he flitted around the fringes of the intelligence world, spying ineffectively for the Imperial Japanese Navy and for the fascists in Spain. No doubt Herbert's misadventures contributed to Graham's obsession with seedy, broken down men and dodgy dealers; first appearing, thinly disguised, as the conman Anthony Farrant in his 1935 novel "England Made Me". Despite their difficulties it is clear Graham kept in touch with Herbert (a tranche of correspondence between the two, spanning four decades, the tone generally friendly and warm, i … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLATH, Sylvia
Heinemann, 1961. First edition. Original green cloth in white printed dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed to her husband's (Ted Hughes) aunt and cousin, "For Hilda + Vicky with lots of love from Sylvia January 1, 1961" A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, slightly tanned to the spine with a couple of short closed tears. A rare presentation copy of Plath's first collection of poetry, the only one published in her lifetime. Hilda Farrar and her daughter Vicky were Ted Hughes's aunt and cousin respectively. Sylvia and Ted had spent Christmas of 1960 in Yorkshire, visiting Hilda and Vicky as well as other members of Hughes' family. They returned to London on New Year's Eve, Sylvia apparently sending a copy of her recently published book immediately on her return. Presentation copies of The Colossus are rare, generally being given only to family members and close friends. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Gorey, Edward
Constable, London, 1961. First printing of the first UK edition, sixmo size, 60 pp., signed by Edward Gorey. Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) is well-known and well-loved for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative. This work, "The Gorey Alphabet", is the first printing of the British edition of "The Fatal Lozenge" (same book with a different title). While "Lozenge" was first published as a paperback the year prior (in 1960), this British version was published as a hardbound book (which was issued without a dust jacket) for which Gorey provided two original illustrations for the front and back covers; therefore, the boards differ from the "Lozenge" wraps. "Lozenge" / "Gorey Alphabet" was Edward Gorey's first published alphabet book. "Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a character which appears in a four line poem (Apparition, Baby, Cad, Drudge, etc.), each poem being accompanied by a single illustration. Apart from being in alphabetical order, the individual poems do not relate to each other, but rather each turn of the page reveals a new personage who is involved in some sordid activity or misfortune" (n.b., from the web site of the Goreyana Blogspot). As with most of Gorey's work, one winces a bit at the macabre story but cannot stop also laughing, nor can one stop reading. ___DESCRIPTION: Illustrated paper-covered boards, two original illustrations by Gorey on the front and back in three colours, black lettering on the front and spine, this volume signed by Gorey on the title page in his usual manner (undernea … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLEMING, Ian.
London Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on front free endpaper; 8vo; publisher's boards (binding 'C'), a fine copy, dust-jacket by Richard Chopping, slight toning to spine, minor running to corner-tips, but overall a near fine example. A fine, signed first edition of the first of the 'Blofeld Trilogy', Thunderball introduces readers of the James Bond novels to the crime syndicate SPECTRE, and its Machiavellian mastermind Ernst Stavro Blofield, famously played in the film versions by Donald Pleasance, Telly Savalas and, most recently, Christopher Waltz among others. The story incorporates several elements from the earlier books, as well as playing on two of Fleming's recurring interests, diving and treasure-hunting. The idea for Thunderball originally began as a film treatment, conceived by Fleming and others, but when this project fell through Fleming converted the story into a novel, without the consent of the co-writers for the film version, leading to a long and complex legal battle that was eventually even to challenge the authorship of the actual James Bond character itself. 1961. COCTEAU Jean (1889-1963). [Click Below for Full Description]

FLEMING, Ian Lancaster (1908-1964)
London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. [Spy thriller] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.254. Publisher's cloth-effect paper over boards with embossed skeleton hand design to upper board, gilt titles to spine. In dust-wrapper illustrated by Richard Chopping. A clean, fine copy of the book in an outstanding wrapper. Housed in a custom-made protective box. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in this novel that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villain- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery once more as 007, was loosely based on this story. Gilbert, Jon. Ian Fleming: The Bibliography, A9a (1.1).

[Click Below for Full Description]
