Henry Miller
1961. Miller, Henry & Shapiro, Karl (Introduction) - Tropic of Cancer - Grove Press: New York, 1961 - First American Edition / First Printing / First Issue Dust Jacket - "First Printing" stated on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first American edition. Correct first issue dust jacket with no Roman numerals. The book has rubbing to the spine ends and tips along with general shelf wear. The spine has the slightest of roll but is not serious. The dust jacket has a linear blue stain from a very old brodart (which has obviously since then been removed and replaced), light scattered staining and shelf wear with rubbing and some closed tears. This is a still bright and attractive example of the correct first printing dust jacket with no publisher's Roman numerals which appear in the later printings. This copy has a Henry Miller signature which has been tipped onto the title page. Also on the title page, Karl Shapiro has signed this copy with an incredible inscription reading: "Michael Hargraves: The / introduction is one of my / proudest writings. / Karl Shapiro / 12/8/81". Michael Hargraves has signed, dated, and located this, his personal copy, with great flourish on the front end page. This is the part of the description that gets the most interesting. Michael Hargraves, who owned this copy, and to whom it was inscribed by Shapiro, was an author, Hollywood screen writer, and most importantly (to this cataloguer) a bibliographer. Among his many bibliographies were studies on Robert Grover, Harry Crews, and most importantly Henry Miller … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erwin Schrodinger
Paul Zsolnay, Hamburg; Vienna, 1961. pp 180 Schrödinger's last book, inscribed by his widow to the first post-war German Ambassador in Vienna, Carl Hermann Mueller Graaf. Anne Marie Schrödinger inscribed the book after her husband's death on the first blank to 'Ir Excellenz Herr Botschaffer Dr Mueller-Graaf . Dankbarkeit Anne Marie Schrödinger - Wein, im Oktober 1962.' The book is near fine with a little bump at the head of the upper board and a small blue mark to the foreedge, in a very good jacket, a couple of very short tears to the edges of the jacket. Schrödinger wrote this final almost metaphysical work following his return to Vienna in 1956 at the close of a remarkable career during which he won the Nobel Prize for developing a number of fundamental results in the field of quantum theory. In popular culture Schrödinger is best known for his 'Schrödinger's cat' thought-experiment. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information. CLAUSER, John A.
[Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1961. Fine. Original painting. Measuring 29.75" x 23" in 37.75" x 31.5" frame. A couple dings to the wooden frame, else fine. Signed by the artist John A. Clauser ("Clauser") in the lower right corner. An attractive painting of an ACME supermarket from the early Sixties with period cars parked in the foreground and appropriately garbed patrons (nearly all women in dresses) walking to and from the store. Though undated it was likely painted for ACME in 1961 when the company debuted its new "A" frame style stores and new teardrop logo (leaving behind its original script logo of the 1950s). This is likely one of the original architectural designs with a label on the rear that reads: "John A. Clauser / registered architect / 2036 Rittenhouse Sq."

Niebuhr, Reinhold
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1961. The two volumes bound together, with the original page-numbering of Volume Two unchanged "so that references given in other current works will cause no confusion to readers." A very good copy with NO original dust jacket. Instead, previous owner Prof. Karl Paul Donfried has wrapped the green cloth boards here in a clear, tight-fitting mylar sheet which is neatly tucked and adhered to the pastedowns. As this is reasonably attractive and has protected the book well, we have left undisturbed. Last copyright date showing is 1949, but Scribner's date code to copyright page "J-3.61 [H]" could indicate a print date as late as 1961. Signed "Reinhold Niebuhr" (name only) in blue ink to the title page (matches other Niebuhr signatures in our possession.) Karl Paul Donfried's red-and-black Harvard bookplate to front pastedown. Author Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) was an American Reformed theologian, ethicist, commentator on public affairs, and professor at the Union Theological Seminary for more than 30 years. The Modern Library ranks "The Nature and Destiny of Man," his best known work, 18th among the top 100 non-fiction books of the Twentieth Century. Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. described Niebuhr as "the most influential American theologian of the 20th century." Although a Socialist, Niebuhr supported American efforts to contain Soviet Communism. Previous owner of this copy Karl Paul Donfried, a graduate of Columbia and Harvard, earned his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg in 1968 and was ordained by the Lutheran Church … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEVI Primo traduit de l'italien par CAUSSE Michèle
Paris: Buchet/Chastel, 1961. Fine. Buchet/Chastel, Paris 1961, 14x19cm, broché. - First edition of the French translation of one of the reference works on the Nazi concentration camp system. Of a rare rarity, this French translation of the first book of Primo Levi will pass unnoticed as the original Italian edition published in 1947. It will be necessary to wait for the suicide of its author in 1987 for a second French edition to be published and that this fundamental testimony on the Holocaust becomes this emblematic work of concentration camp literature. michael Causse's translation reflects the difficulty of transcribing the words of the witnesses of the unspeakable. But it is especially the unconscious refusal to hear this word that contributed to the failure of this first book by Primo Levi like that of Robert Antelme's The Human Species, also written and published for the first time in 1947. It is only during this decade that some of the greatest works on the Holocaust will be published successively: The Night of Elie Wiesel, 1958; The sand luggage of Anna Langfus, 1962; The great trip of Jorge Semprun, 1963; The Truce of Primo Levi, 1963, None of us will return from Charlotte Delbo, 1965 ... Rare and beautiful copy of the first translation of Primo Levi's most important book. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale de la traduction française d'une des oeuvres de référence sur le système concentrationnaire nazi. KONEN, Valentina.
Moscow: Sovietskii kompozitor, 1961. Moscow: Sovietskii kompozitor,, 1961. Octavo. Original ecru cloth, title to spine and front board in gilt and blue. Illustrations and notation to the text, 47 pages of notation at the rear. A little rubbed, slightly cocked, two damp-spots to the rear board, light browning, overall very good. First edition, first impression, print-run of 5000. Detailed overview of American jazz. Soviet musicologist Valentina Konen (1909-1991) was one of the leading authorities on jazz culture in USSR. Born in Baku she left Russia after the October Revolution and spent 10 years in USA, studying at Juilliard (1924-9) specialising in piano. During her time in America she was part of the circle that gathered around Charles Seeger, who was lecturing at both Julliard and the New School for Social Research. Konen returned in USSR in 1931 to study at the history and theory department of the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1938 with a doctoral thesis on the musical culture in USA. She lectured in the history of foreign music at the Conservatory between 1938 and 1949 also teaching at the Gnesin Music Teachers College from 1944. In 1949 she was accused of being a "cosmopolite" and fired, being exiled to the Urals, where she was a professor at the Urals Conservatory, 1949–51. In 1960, rehabilitated, Konen became a senior research worker at the Institute of the History of the Arts, under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. The somewhat neutral title of this work can be accounted for by Konen's troubled career path, which shadows the vexed history o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
