        Phantom Tollbooth.

Epstein & Carroll, New York 1961 - First edition of this modern classic. Octavo, original blue cloth, illustrated by Jules Feiffer. Signed by both Norton Juster and illustrator, Jules Feiffer on the half title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped first issue dust jacket which has had some expert restoration. "This book has been described by Naomi Lewis as ‘the best original modern book in the Carroll line’" (Carpenter & Prichard, 409). Anyone with an appreciation for the language and irony of Alice in Wonderland will consider this witty adventure a classic. The novel begins with a miserably bored lad who exclaims that "there is nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." Suddenly a tollbooth appears in his room, and, having no other interests, the lad Milo drives through it and sets off in his toy car for a mythic journey.         El papel de la ayuda exterior en el desarrollo de Cuba. Charlas sobre problemas economicos en el Cine-Teatro MinFAR, marzo 9 de 1961.

Instrucción MinFAR, Habana 1961 - 12mo, photographic and pictorial stapled wraps featuring a large Cuban flag and Che Guevara seated at a desk on a stage. pp 28, illus, charts. Part one (and apparently the last) of a series entitled Ciclo de Problemas Economicos - issued by MinFAR (Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces). Written by Guevara in his role as Minister of Industry, this paper lauds the increased revenue pouring in to Cuba via its Socialist and/or communist allies, namely USSR, China, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Dominican Republic, and Bulgaria (from $1m in 1958 to $500m in 1961). He stands this against the economic loss sustained by the recent severance of economic ties with the United States, concluding of course that Cuba is in a far greater position for economic development as a result. Wraps separated from stapled block, front wrap foxed, with chipping at extremities, rear wrap soiled, text clean and solid. Official stamp on last page. Rare, only one copy in libraries worldwide, according to OCLC; none in the U.S. [Attributes: First Edition]

[The Blofeld Trilogy, comprising] Thunderball; [with] On Her Majesty's Secret Service; [and] You Only Live Twice

London Jonathan Cape [through 1964] 1961 Three fine first impressions, First Issue or First State, of the author's eighth, tenth, and eleventh novels (Blofeld is absent from the ninth, The Spy Who Loved Me) in the iconic, correct-issue dust jackets illustrated by Richard Chopping. Uniformly bound octavos in publisher's dark brown Type C cloth stamped with gold or silver foil. 253,[1]; 288; 255,[1]pp. Thunderball: Binding A (spine stamped with gold foil). Skeletal hand motif blind-stamped on upper board. Fine (very light, faint speckling to fore-edge and one page, otherwise crisp, clean, apparently unread); Near Fine or better price-clipped jacket (brief edge-wear). Gilbert A9a(1.1). OHMSS: Binding A. Upper board with white serpentine ski track stamped on upper board. About Fine (partially erased manuscript ex libris to head of front free end paper) and only lightly read; about Fine jacket (lightly faded red lettering to spine panel, perimeter of back panel slightly toned), priced 16s. Gilbert A11a(1.1). YOLT: Binding A. Seven Japanese characters stamped vertically in gilt to upper board, bamboo-patterned end papers. Fine, unmarked and unblemished throughout, probably unread; Fine jacket, without toning or fading, priced 16s. Gilbert A12a(1.1). Withal, a handsome, collectible set. Fine ¶ Perhaps the most emotionally intense of Ian Fleming's thrillers, these three novels feature Bond's archenemy: the supervillain and criminal mastermind with aspirations of world domination, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. In Thunderball, Fleming sketches Blofeld early life, first as Nazi collaborator, then on the Allied side before disappearing in South America and founding Spectre, the global criminal syndicate and terrorist organization that threatens to destabilize the world with two hijacked atomic bombs. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Blofeld goes underground in Switzerland, in the guise of the Comte Balthazar de Bleuchamp, but Bond tracks the Spectre chief to his stronghold in the Alps and defeats his biological warfare scheme to destroy Britain's agricultural economy. Blofeld retaliates, killing Bond's new wife, Contessa Teresa "Tracy" di Vicenzo, and throwing Bond into a tailspin that nearly destroys him before he exacts his revenge in You Only Live Twice. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Bevitore.

Senza data. Cesare Medail. Formato: Scultura in cera (pezzo unico) di cm 36x31x8. Molto buono.

Typed letter signed. WITH: Typed order signed

1961. Signed. KENNEDY, John F. Typed letter signed. WITH: Typed order signed. Washington, DC: May 25, 1961. Two items. Typed letter signed: One page, quarto, White House stationery, 7 by 9 inches, typed and signed on recto. Typed order signed: one page, folio, heavy wove paper, 8-1/4 by 13 inches, typed and signed on recto. $8500.Typed letter signed by Kennedy as President to James Webb, second administrator of NASA, appointing him to the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board, the board that assisted President Kennedy in selecting ""persons to receive the President's Award for distinguished Federal civilian service."" Offered together with a typed copy of the order appointing Webb as Chairman of this board, also signed by Kennedy.James E. Webb (1906-92) was a Marine Corps pilot before attending law school and entering public service. His positions included Undersecretary of State and Director of the Bureau of the Budget, before Kennedy appointed him in February, 1961 as the second administrator of NASA. ""The post was considered a nonglamorous backwater in the Kennedy Administration, and more than a dozen other persons had turned down the appointmentÂ… Webb accepted, however, after being personally requested by President John KennedyÂ… Shortly after Webb took over NASA, unexpected events caused President Kennedy to give NASA a major role in his administration. In April 1961 the Soviet Union scored a technological victory by sending the first astronaut into orbit around the earthÂ… In order to boost national morale, Kennedy made a speech to Congress on 25 May 1961, in which he announced that the United States would embark on a policy designed to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade. The administration's commitment to a manned moon shot increased NASA's annual budget from $1 billion to more than $5 billion during the mid-1960s. Webb found himself heading a project whose scope and magnitude was comparable to the wartime Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. While presiding over the expansion of the agency, Webb helped guide its major decisions: choice of the Cape Kennedy launching site; development of the two-man Gemini project to precede the three-man Apollo moon shots; and selection of technology and contractors for the booster rockets, command modules, and earth station equipment"" (ANB). Indeed, Webb oversaw the first manned launches in the Mercury through Gemini programs, coordinated all the various research centers and facilitated the creation of the Manned Spacecraft Center (later the Johnson Space Center). Such was his untiring advocacy for Congressional support of NASA that President Johnson referred to him as ""Mr. Space."" Webb stepped down in October, 1968, just before the first manned Apollo flights.Kennedy's letter, dated May 25, 1961, reads, ""Dear Mr. Webb: Pursuant to Executive Order 10717, I hereby appoint you to serve as a member of the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board for the remainder of the term expiring June 26, 1963. I appreciate your willingness to serve on this Board which, under the terms of the Executive Order, will assist me in the selection of persons to receive the President's award for distinguished Federal civilian service. Sincerely, [signed] John Kennedy."" The typed copy of the executive order, also dated May 25, 1961, reads ""Order: Pursuant to the provisions of Section 3 of the Executive Order of June 27, 1957, establishing the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service, I hereby designate James E. Webb as Chairman of the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board. [signed] John Kennedy."" Both leaves with staple holes in upper left corners; short closed tear to lower margin of order, with sharp fold near lower edge, not touching signature. Near-fine condition.

        Weegee by Weegee

1961. First Edition . Signed. WEEGEE. Weegee by Weegee: An Autobiography. New York: Ziff-Davis, (1961). Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2500.First edition of WeegeeÂ’s colorful autobiography, profusely illustrated with 116 black-and-white photographs, boldly inscribed: “To BernieÂ… Weegee 1962.”Polish-born Arthur Felig was dubbed “Ouija” by New York City cops in the 1930s for his uncanny ability to appear at crime scenes before the police did. A tabloid-news photographer for the Daily News, The Herald Tribune, and The Post, Weegee was known for his gritty, confrontational photos of the demi-monde. “The book that made Weegee famous, Naked City, was made into a film, and eventually, he went to Hollywood to make several short films and to act in others. But Weegee is best remembered as the chronicler of a particular place and time: New York City in the first half of the 20th century. He was a news photographer, and if we accept the definition of poetry as ‘news that stays news,Â’ he was a poet with a camera” (Roth, 118). This autobiography includes his account of the success of Naked City and his subsequent sojourn in Hollywood. As Weegee died of a brain tumor in 1968, signed copies of this work are scarce. Book very nearly fine with slight soiling to inscription page, dust jacket near-fine with a few small closed tears and light rubbing. A near-fine copy, quite scarce inscribed.

Set in the Hindu community in postcolonial Trinidad — where Naipaul was born — A House for Mr. Biswas is the life story of a man who wanted only a home, but who was a magnet for misfortune, oppression and humiliation, 'a wanderer with no place he could call his own, with no family except that which he was to attempt to create out of the engulfing world of the Tulsis.' MohunÂ’s survival is a triumph of resilience and persistence and humor, an epic of dignity and self-respect doggedly clung to." (Time 100) N. B.
