The Concept of Law. (FIRST EDITION.)

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1961. - FIRST EDITION. Original cloth. Very Good+, in dust jacket. 'The Concept of Law is the most important and original work of legal philosophy written this century. First published in 1961, it is considered the masterpiece of H.L.A. Hart's enormous contribution to the study of jurisprudence and legal philosophy. Its elegant language and balanced arguments have sparked wide debate and unprecedented growth in the quantity and quality of scholarship in this area--much of it devoted to attacking or defending Hart's theories. Principal among Hart's critics is renowned lawyer and political philosopher Ronald Dworkin who in the 1970s and 80s mounted a series of challenges to Hart's Concept of Law. It seemed that Hart let these challenges go unanswered until, after his death in 1992, his answer to Dworkin's criticism was discovered among his papers' (Clarendon Press Web site). 'With the publication of The Concept of Law in 1961, Hart's reputation was assured. Although some of the book built on themes from his debates with Lon Fuller and on his earlier writings about legal language, the book represented Hart's first comprehensive effort to understand the phenomenon of law from a philosophical perspective. This effort yielded numerous insights about the nature of rules, the structure and foundations of a legal system, the sources of law, and the character of legal obligation. It was Hart's lasting achievement, and although he also did pathbreaking work on the legal enforcement of morality, on causation, on Bentham, on the nature of authority, on punishment, and on various other topics, it is The Concept of Law that is his signal work. Indeed, it is The Concept of Law that explains why Hart can be the subject of a lengthy biography and why that lengthy biography can be the topic for an essay in the Harvard Law Review' (Frederick Schauer, '(Re)taking Hart', review of Nicola Lacey, A Life of H. L. A. Hart: The Nightmare and the Noble Dream, Oxford, 2004, Harvard Law Review, Vol. 119, 2006, pp. 852-883). Dworkin wrote a response to Schauer, 'Hart and the Concepts of Law' (Harvard Law Review, Issue 119, Jan. 2006, Forum 267). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Worm And The Ring

The First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1961. The BOOK is in near FINE condition. The binding is tight and the book is free from inscriptions and erasures. Mild bumping to the lower corners. The text block is lightly toned but the pages are clean with just some light finger marking to a very few pages. The gilt titling on the spine remains bright. Mild creasing to the lower corner tips of some pages. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. It has mild rubbing to the corners. The pink lettering is only lightly faded to the spine. The spine is only mildly toned with just a little light soiling to the lower spine edge. Small closed tear to the lower front spine fold .There is a mild toning to the edges of the flaps. The condition of the wrapper is far better than usually encountered. An exceptional copy. The John Rowland designed wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival protector. A very SCARCE early key BURGESS title with an interesting history:The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to 'amend all unsold copies of the book' (The Times, October 25, 1962) but actually pulped them. An extremely scarce title to find with such attributes.

El papel de la ayuda exterior en el desarrollo de Cuba Charlas sobre problemas economicos en el Cine-Teatro MinFAR, marzo 9 de 1961

12mo, photographic and pictorial stapled wraps featuring a large Cuban flag and Che Guevara seated at a desk on a stage. pp 28, illus, charts. Part one (and apparently the last) of a series entitled Ciclo de Problemas Economicos - issued by MinFAR (Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces). Written by Guevara in his role as Minister of Industry, this paper lauds the increased revenue pouring in to Cuba via its Socialist and/or communist allies, namely USSR, China, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Dominican Republic, and Bulgaria (from $1m in 1958 to $500m in 1961). He stands this against the economic loss sustained by the recent severance of economic ties with the United States, concluding of course that Cuba is in a far greater position for economic development as a result. Wraps separated from stapled block, front wrap foxed, with chipping at extremities, rear wrap soiled, text clean and solid. Official stamp on last page. Rare, only one copy in libraries worldwide, according to OCLC; none in the U.S.

Yoko Ono, New York 1961 - Two vintage mimeograph flyers, one doubling as a program, for the legendary first performance evening devoted entirely to the music of La Monte Young at Yoko Ono's loft, marking both Young's formal performance debut and the seventh performance in Ono's loft. The Composition 1960 piece was conceptual, whereas all the Composition 1961 pieces were musical works performed by Young and Robert Dunn. The performance and the compositions were both an outgrowth of Young's foundational work during 1960, when he studied with John Cage and Richard Maxfield in New York.       Leonardo da Vinci, Piccolo Orizzonte, 1961. Testo di Leonardo Sciascia. Fotografie in bianco e nero di Ferdinando Scianna. Brevi note alle immagini a cura del fotografo. 16mo. pp. 222. . Ottimo (Fine). . Prima edizione (First edition). .

        Valitud Partiid 1931-1958

Eesti Riiklik Kirjastus, Tallinn 1961 - 485 pages with diagrams, plates and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") issued in grey cloth with black and white cover and black lettering to spine and white and red lettering to pictorial cover. signed First edition. Paul Keres was born in Narva on 7 January 1916. At the University of Tartu, he studied mathematics from 1938 to 1941. In 1935, he became the Estonian chess champion for the first time. In the years 1936-1940, Keres was the editor-in-chief of the journal "Estonian Chess". Paul Keres first appeared in the international chess arena in the mid-1930s, and remained a prominent figure there for years. In 1938, he shared the first place with Fine in the memorable AVRO tournament, but after additional calculations Paul Keres was announced the winner. However, the title match with Alekhine did not follow. After the war, he was eclipsed by Botvinnik, though still retaining his place among the world's top class players. By the end of the 1950s, he was the strongest chess player in the world (at least, as revealed by the performance ratios calculated post factum, by the ELO ratings). He fell short, by a whisker, of the chance to compete for the title of World Champion. That right was snatched away, in sequence, by Tal and Petrosian. Chess Olympics in Helsinki in 1952 Chess Olympics in Helsinki in 1952. Paul Keres playing for the Soviet Union team on the first board. In the years 1953-1962, Keres shared second and fourth place once, and placed second three times. This earned him the droll title "Forever Second". Keres remained among the world's best competing chess players until the mid-1960s. And even after that, he was still able to achieve remarkable results. In 1959 and 1962, Paul Keres wasnamed Estonia's best sportsman of the year. At the Chess Olympics, Paul Keres received a team gold medal seven times. At the Chess Olympics in Nice in 1974, a prposal was made to set up Paul Keres as the candidate for FIDE president. One of the initiators, the well-known chess-player Milunka Lazarevi asked Keres, "How much can you independently, without Moscow, make decisions?" The answer was, "Independently, I can only write books". In the Soviet Union time, sports, just like the arts were politicised. This meant that an athlete's (or chess player's) career was very dependent upon the opinions and decisions of Party and government bureaucrats. Keres's funeral 1975 Paul Keres's funeral in 1975 In 1975, the great Estonian grandmaster Paul Keres died suddenly at the age of 59. This perennial world championship contender, was, for the remarkably long span of thirty years (ca. 1936-1965), among the top ten chess players in the world. Since the year 1969, an annual chess tournament named after Keres has been held in Tallinn. Starting in 1976, it has been called the Paul Keres Memorial. There are also a number of chess clubs and festivals named after him. Paul Keres was one of the greatest players in chess history, a leading contender for the World Championship for a third of a century, and perhaps the strongest player to have never played a match for the World Championship. Thanks to his modesty, honesty, and open-minded approach to chess, Keres was respected and loved by not only his fellow Estonians, but also by chess enthusiasts the world over. An interesting fact is that Paul Keres is probably the only chess player whose portrait is on a banknote - the Estonian five kroon bill. Condition: Corners bumped, light edge wear, offset darkening to paste down and end papers. Jacket corners and spine ends chipped, spin 1/2 inch chip in spine affecting title, light edge wear with some closed tears. A very good copy in about a very good jacket.
