London: Jonathan Cape,, 1961. Octavo. Original dark grey boards, titles to spine gilt, skeletal hand motif on front board blind stamped. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. A few minor spots to the fore edge but an excellent copy in the very slightly rubbed dust jacket. First edition, first impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "To Margot from Ian Fleming"; a fascinating presentation. The recipient was the wife of Jack Whittingham, who wrote an original Bond film screenplay named Thunderball, a collaborative project that predated the book. Fleming used the screenplay as the unacknowledged basis for his novel of the same name, but signed a film agreement instead with Eon Productions, leaving Whittingham and his producer, Kevin McClory, out in the cold and with a pronounced grievance. The resulting court case in November 1963 is said to have broken Fleming's health, leading to his premature death from heart complications in August 1964. As a result of the court settlement, future versions of the novel gave the credit, "based on the screen treatment by Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ian Fleming" (in that order). The inscription suggests that at the time of publication Fleming had little idea how much the book had offended the Whittingham family; or it may reflect the fact that, as Jack Whittingham had recently and openly embarked on an affair with a 17-year-old model, his long-suffering wife was unlikely to be sympathetic to his cause.

A rare first translation of The Little Prince to Esperanto was printed in 1961 in Orléans and was accomapnied with black and white illustrations, based on the original drawings. - This rare first edition of The Little Prince was made by a French author, esperantist, and publisher Pierre Delaire. With 17 years Delaire already developed his own method of translating texts to Esperanto, and he started publishing books in Esperanto in 1936. Pierre Delaire was a founder of the Esperanto Association Edelvejso in Orléans, which was also publishing books. The translation of The Little Prince was the sixth publication by the club and was in the first place sold to the members and other Esperanto institutions. According to the list on the back of the publication the Association counted by that time 23 members. The introduction was written by Ralph Harry (1917-2002), an esperantist, nd one of Australia's pioneer diplomats and intelligence specialists. The book is rare. We could only trace 7 examples in institutions worldwide and no other recorded examples on the market in the past generation. References: OCLC 858583177.

        Catch-22 ( SiGNED )

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). First Edition. First edition, stated "Third Printing" hardcover book in the original first-issue dust jacket. SIGNED, placed and dated by the author on the front endpaper without presentation inscription: "Joseph Heller / 4/22/86 / Miami". First-issue dust jacket has no review blurbs on the front cover, a captionless full-cover photo of Heller in a sport coat on the rear panel, and publisher's original $5.95 price at bottom of front flap. Blue cloth binding with white lettering on the spine. Red topstain. Untrimmed page edges. 443 pages. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD dust jacket. Book has a few faint light clear stains on both boards and one tiny brown spot on the spine and both boards. Spine is slightly sun-toned. The red top edge is just slightly sun-faded and has a few scattered small brown stains and two surface abrasions on top of the brown stains, one of which has caused a tiny nick at the top edge of the front endpaper and the first 15 pages. Otherwise the exterior is unworn with no bumping to the edges or corners. Tightly bound, straight and square volume with no cracking to the hinges but there is some give to both joints. Excellent interior with bright, clean, unmarked pages. Front endpaper has a partially removed previous owner's small address label at the top edge. Slight browning to the rear endpaper due to a 1979 newspaper book review of Heller's novel Good as Gold, still inserted. Dust jacket is age-toned all around. Small light tan stain on the front panel along with two one-inch closed tears at top edge with some light creasing and a 1/4" closed tear at bottom edge. Rear panel has a 1/2" closed tear at top and bottom edge and a small 3/8" V-shaped closed tear near the right edge. Some light general surface wear. Otherwise excellent. Jacket is protected in a mylar cover..

        The Centurions

London: Hutchinson & Co. Ltd., 1961. First English language edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a superior, jacketed copy of the first English-language edition, scarce thus, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The red and black cloth binding remains clean, bright, and tight, with sharp corners, vivid spine gilt, and no appreciable wear. A very slight forward lean is the only defect noted. The contents remain bright with a crisp feel and no spotting or previous ownership marks. The illustrated yellow and gray-green dust jacket remains clean and complete, with the original lower front flap price intact. We note trivial wear to spine ends and corners and only a trivial hint of toning to the spine, which retains strong color and excellent shelf presentation. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. French journalist, war correspondent, and former soldier Jean Pierre Lucien Osty published this acclaimed novel under the nom de plume Jean Larteguy. The Centurions narrative is set against the backdrop of the military quagmires and moral complexities of France's post-WWII colonial conflicts. The story follows a group of French paratroop officers captured by the Vietminh after the fall of Dien-Bien-Phu in Indo-China through their subsequent release, re-enlistment, and service in Algeria using the methods they learned from the Vietminh. The book was written and published in French in 1960, then translated by Xan Fielding for publication in this first English-language edition in 1961. The Centurions won the prestigious Prix Eve Delacroix for 1960 and in 1966 was adapted into a movie (Lost Command) starring Anthony Quinn. The Centurions is credited with the first presentation of the “ticking time bomb” moral quandary scenario.
