        Gone with the Wind

GONE WITH THE WIND MOVIE CAST: OLIVIA de HAVILAND, BUTTERFLY McQUEEN, VICTOR JORY, ANN RUTHERFORD and EVELYN KEYESSlip cased 25th anniversary edition of Margaret Mitchell's novel, signed by five members, of the movie cast, and also by Susan Myrick, Mitchell's friend and a technical advisor to the film. Rutherford and Jory have added inscriptions to the book's owner.Book signed: ""For Bernard/Bless you for remembering/Ann Rutherford", "Olivia de Haviland", "Evelyn Keyes", "Butterfly McQueen", "To Bernard/your friend/Victor Jory" and "Susan Myrick", 954 pages, 6¼x9½. Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell. New York, The Macmillan Company, 1961. Cloth-bound 25th anniversary edition with slip case. Signed on inside front cover and flyleaf. Imprinted with the name of the book's owner, Bernard L. Solari, to whom the signatures of Rutherford and Jory are inscribed. In 1939, the epic film, Gone With The Wind, based on Margaret Mitchell's 1936 best-selling novel of the same name, broke box office records and won ten Oscars (against stiff competition). The saga of the old South remains one of the most beloved films of all time. OLIVIA de HAVILAND (b. 1916), the last surviving major star of the film, was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Melanie Wilkes. The sister of actress Joan Fontaine, de Haviland won Best Actress Academy Awards for her roles in To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949), and received two more nominations (Hold Back the Dawn,1941; and The Snake Pit, 1948). At MGM from 1937, ANNE RUTHERFORD (b. 1920) gained minor stardom as Polly Benedict in the studio's Andy Hardy series. She was allowed to display her perky comic gifts in a trio of 1940s mystery-comedies co-starring Red Skelton (Whistling in the Dark, Whistling in Dixie, Whistling in Brooklyn), and was quite appealing as Careen O'Hara in this film. She closed out her film career in 1950 to devote more time to her private life; thereafter limiting her activity to her annual appearance as Suzanne Pleshette's mother on TV's The Bob Newhart Show. EVELYN KEYES (1919-2008)received her best opportunity outside of the DeMille fold when she was cast as the eternally jilted Suellen O'Hara in this film. Some of her other notable works include Face Behind the Mask (1941), Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) and 1947's Mating of Millie. THELMA "BUTTERFLY" McQUEEN (1911-1995) earned her nickname in a ballet production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. She debuted on Broadway in Brown Sugar (1937), and two years later played her first and most memorable movie role, that of Prissy, the young slave in this film. After being typecast as a sobbing maid in several films of the 1940s, she grew tired of the image and retired from films in 1947, returning in the early 1970s when better roles were available. After playing passive roles under Cecil B. DeMille, VICTOR JORY (1902-1982) was U.S. Coast Guard boxing and wrestling champion. He played occasional leads, but more often character parts in films, often as a heavy. In Gone with the Wind he was cast as Jonas Wilkerson, a field overseer. Jory's other films included A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), Man of Conquest (1940), The Miracle Worker (1962) and Papillon (1973). He played Lamont Cranston in a serialization of The Shadow (1940). Margaret Mitchell did not want to become closely involved in production of the film. She delegated SUSAN MYRICK (1893-1978), a close personal friend and Georgia journalist, as technical advisor on the film. She saved the film from some serious gaffes, such as the cotton being picked in April.Of these signers, only de Haviland and Rutherford were still living in late 2010. BERNARD L. SOLARI had his own association with the film. He took now-famous pictures of the Loew's Grand Theatre in Atlanta, site of the movie's much ballyhooed premier, after the structure was destroyed by fire in 1978. Slip case lightly soiled and worn. Book in fine condition.

"Let us calm ourselves ... one day we shall see the merits of Cats generally recognized. It is impossible that we should not come to feel that in our Cat we possess a friend who is the best of company, an admirable Pantomimist, a born Astrologer, a perfect Musician, in short the union of the talents & the graces" (p. 104-5).         The Truth about Kuwait (1).

[Baghdad], Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juli, 1961. 8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. 27, one map; wrappers a trifle spotted, otherwise very good. First edition, extremely rare. This is a public protestation of the Iraqi government against the independence of Kuwait. In June 1961 Kuwait became independent with the end of the British protectorate and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah became Emir. Under the terms of the newly drafted constitution, Kuwait held its first parliamentary elections in 1963. Kuwait was the first Arab state in the Persian Gulf area to establish a constitution and parliament. The new state became the most developed country in the region and prospered, with the Kuwaiti governement setting up the world's first sovereign wealth fund. Of course, the Iraqi governement in this paper claims to have legitimate rights to rule Kuwait as part of Basrah province.
