The Economic Growth of the United States 1790-1860

Englewood Cliffs, NJ.:: Prentice-Hall Inc,, 1961.. Englewood Cliffs, NJ.: Prentice-Hall Inc, 1961. First edition, Octavo, original grey cloth. Inscribed by the author. Some light rubbing to the bottom edges, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. On the eve of the Civil War the United States had already achieved rapid and sustained economic expansion. We had filled out our territorial boundaries, and the frontier was already encroaching upon the parched lands in the lee of the Rocky Mountains and moving east of the Sierra Nevadas. We were an industrial nation second only to Britain in manufacturing. Our expansion had been matched by an acceleration of economic well-being. The obstacles to American economic growth had been removed before the Civil War took place. That war was a costly and bitter interruption." "All readers will profit by the virtuosity with which the author has carried out his pioneering attempt to erect the structure of economic hisotry on the basis of a theory of development" (Carter Goodrich, American Historical Review). Douglas was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1993, "for having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional change.

The Winter of Our Discontent [Pristine]

New York: Viking Press, 1961. New York: Viking Press, 1961. First Printing. Hardcover. As New/Fine. First Printing. 8vo: [8],311,[1]pp. Publisher's turquoise cloth, spine titled in silver in black title block, upper cover stamped in blind, top edge stained turquoise, blue pictorial dust jacket priced $4.50. As New, very fine and unread, in a Fine jacket, vibrant and bright. All in all, virtually pristine. Goldstone & Payne A38b. & ¶Steinbeck's final novel, set in New England, the title a reference to the first two lines of Shakespeare's Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York." For the most part, Winter received a harsh critical reception (although the Atlantic Monthly called it a classic). Largely negative critics offered little appreciation of the risks Steinbeck had taken or the enormous technical innovations he had attempted in the text. But the following year the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature, remarking specifically on five books from 1935 to 1939, then continued: "it is not possible to dwell at any length on individual works which Steinbeck later produced. If at times the critics have seemed to note certain signs of flagging powers, of repetitions that might point to a decrease in vitality, Steinbeck belied their fears most emphatically with The Winter of Our Discontent. Here he attained the same standard which he set in The Grapes of Wrath. Again he holds his position as an independent expounder of the truth with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American, be it good or bad." Now, fifty years later, "recent Steinbeck criticism seems to assert that The Winter of Our Discontent’s structural complexity went unappreciated by early readers who failed to see it as a successful portrait and call to action against an ever-increasing decadence which had invaded the very soul of the times." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Catch - 22

New York:: Simon & Schuster,, 1961.. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1961. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Near fine in a bright near fine dust jacket. Signed by the author on the title page. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very bright copy. Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans ppreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the bsurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177).

John F. Kennedy writes "We were very proud of our American theater last evening

Washington DC: , October 5, 1961 Typed letter signed ("John Kennedy"), as President, to Jack Landau (1924-1966), Washington, 5 October 1961. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery, matted and framed with a color photo. "The performance of Shakespeare last evening in the White House was a very exciting one from many points of view," JFK writes. "Mrs. Kennedy and I appreciate so much your fine efforts in directing the production, and I hope you will express my thanks to the actors, actresses, and technicians who worked so hard to make it the success it was. We were very proud of our American theater last evening, and thank you again for everything you did to make it a memorable performance." This evening of Shakespeare was performed by actors from the American Shakespeare Theater, in the White House East Room, in conjunction with a state dinner for Sudanese president Ferik Ibrahim Abboud. It was very much in keeping with Jacqueline Kennedy's determination to make the White House a cultural center for American and international artists. Landau directed a series of excerpts from Shakespeare's works done in an American key, including a scene from Troilus and Cressida done in Civil War costumes. The American Shakespeare Theater, in Stratford, Connecticut, founded by Lincoln Kirstein, John Houseman and others, in 1955, provided crucial stage experience for a generation of American actors, until it closed in the mid-1980s.

Typed Letter Signed ("Hugo L. Black") to Beryl H. Levy, about Justice Benjamin Cardozo

Washington, D.C, september 8, 1961. 4to. 1 p.; on Supreme Court stationery. Faint horizontal creases; near fine . Justice Black thanks Levy for sending his "Realist Jurisprudence and Prospective Overruling" and offers his brief opinion of the work. Black advises caution in applying Cardozo's "Sunburst Doctrine", which permits prospective overruling: " ... such a rule would, however, mark a considerable break with past practices and therefore it is probably a good thing that there has been considerable caution exercised by judges in this field."

        A House For Mr. Biswas

London: Andre Deutsch, 1961. First edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Some foxing to the page edges, otherwise near fine in a very good dust jacket with a small chip to the crown and foot of the spine. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.For sheer abundance of talent there can hardly be a writer alive who surpasses V.S. Naipaul. Whatever we may want in a novelist is to be found in his books: an almost Conradian gift for tensing a story, a serious involvement with human issues, a supple English prose, a hard-edged wit, a personal vision of things...[He is] the world's writer, a master of language and perception" (The New York Times Book Review). Listed on both Modern Library and Time's 100 great novels of the twentieth century.

Autograph Postcard Signed to Diane di Prima

Approximately 5.75" x 4" postcard sent from Athens, Greece in 1961 to Diane di Prima in New York City. Tiny tack holes in the corners, else just about fine. A closely written postcard in which Ginsberg asks di Prima to have Jose Anumarel contact him about business, and then states: "I'm wandering now thru Delphi, Mycenae, & this week to Crete for a few weeks walking along on country roads with shepherds. Delphi great, climbed over shoulder of Mt. Parnassus to a cave of all uses & idyllic valley, walked all day smoking pipefuls of Ganja. Peter has gone on alone to Istanbul. I'll read in Mt. Athos for a month. Love, as ever -- Allen." .
