The Death And Life of Great American Cities

New York: Random House, 1961. First edition of the author's tour de force. Octavo. Signed by the author, "Jane Jacobs Toronto 1978". Fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket. The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning. . . . [It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments."       (KLEIN, YVES). Wember, Paul & Yves Klein. YVES KLEIN: MONOCHROME UND FEUER - WITH THREE MONOCROME ARTIST MULTIPLES. Krefeld, GERMANY: Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, 1961. First Edition. 4to. Loose Contents in a Sleeve. Artist Monograph. Very Good. np (4pp) + np (8pp) + three loose 12 1/2 x 9 1/4" heavy cardstock sheets coated in monochrome pigment on the rectos only, 23 b&w and 1 color illustration. Text in German. With an exhibition checklist, bibliography and exhibition history. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. "Monochrome und Feuer" was the 1961 German Museum exhibition that cemented the legacy of Yves Klein in the annals of Modern Art. The event, with its then-shocking combination of static monochromes and flame-generated works has taken on near-legendary status in the half-century since its presentation at the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld. Its catalogue features a letterpress-printed essay by curator (and the subsequent compiler of the Yves Klein catalogue raisonné) Paul Wember, a twelve page insert with a checklist of the fifty-four exhibited works as well as illustrations, and most notably, three loose heavy monochrome sheets - one each in gold, hot pink, and International Klein blue - that are artist's multiples. The printed contents are crisp and fresh with the verso of the letterpress brochure showing just a few tiny brown spots on the final page. The monochromes are bright with the blue and pink silkscreen serigraphs each exhibiting a few miniscule areas of pigment loss along one edge. The gold example is as issued - without any additional foil leaf as was sometimes applied by the artist - and shows tiny crimps at two of its corners. The matte white catalogue cover exhibits some slight age-toning, soiling and handling to the exterior along with a very light diagonal soft crease at the lower foredge corner of the front panel. Its only notable condition issue is that the inside front cover shows a 4 x 3" rectangle of brown glue residue (from the removal of a previous owner's bookplate) along with some attendant tearing and surface paper loss. Still in all, this is a sharp, complete, age-appropriate example of one of the truly uncommon and sought-after documents of Twentieth Century Art literature.
