        Chronique [Signed]

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1961. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Fine, Superior copy of the first American edition -- the first edition in English in book form, first printing (gift inscription to the first front free endpaper, small bookshop sticker to rear pastedown), in a Very Good + dust jacket (general edge wear and a small chip at the spine head -- the dust jacket, when found, is usually more worn than that on the copy offered here) SIGNED, PLACED, AND DATED BY SAINT-JOHN PERSE on the second front free endpaper as follows: "St.- John Perse / Washington, 1962". A Poem in 8 parts, with the text presented first in French and then in English. Born Alexis Leger in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe (1887), Saint-John Perse (his adopted the pen name) returned to France with his family who fled the anti-colonist campaign then begun by the then newly-elected native President. He eventually joined France's diplomatic service, becoming General Secretary of the French Foreign Office, and refused to publish his writings while holding office, viewing it as improper for a Diplomat to do so. A strong anti-Nazi and viewed by the Vichy regime as a dangerous adversary, Perse was dismissed from his post and had his French Citizenship revoked upon the Vichy regime's ascension to power. Thereafter moving to Washington, D. C., Saint-John Perse suffered from great financial difficulties until Archibald MacLeish, then Director of the Library of Congress, raised private donations sufficient to permit Perse's employment by the Library. Perse resumed his literary work while exiled in Washington D.C. and won the 1960 Nobel Prize in Literature for "the soaring flight and the evocative imagery of his poetry which in a visionary fashion reflects the conditions of our time". One of Perse's works instrumental in his winning the Prize, the Nobel Committee singled out "Chronique" as "a prophetic appeal to Europe to consider the fatal moment, the turning point in the course of historical events." Signed copies of Perse's works, especially trade editions, are extremely scarce, and signed copies of his works in English translation are even more so. A Fine, Superior copy of one of the Author's more important works, SIGNED, PLACED, AND DATED BY SAINT-JOHN PERSE (ALEXIS LEGER). RARE.

        Horseman, Pass By

Harper NY: Harper. (1961). McMurtry's first book, one of A.C. Greene's "50 best books on Texas," basis for the movie Hud, and winner of the Jesse H. Jones Award from the Texas Institute of Letters for the best novel of the year. Horseman, Pass By, which takes its title from the closing lines of William Butler Yeats's poem "Under Ben Bulben" (as did Mary McCarthy's first novel, Cast a Cold Eye), was a breakthrough in Texas literature and in regional literature in general: by telling a raw, unadulterated story entirely fitting to its contemporary West Texas setting, McMurtry not only brought the regional novel out of its quaint gentility but gave it a universality it could not have had otherwise; it has been called a West Texas Catcher in the Rye, with the caveat that the lives of Texans in general were a little more crude than those of the Easterners in Salinger's novel. Faint foxing to foredge and endpages; still a very near fine copy in a very near fine, lightly rubbed, price-clipped dust jacket. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Typed Letter Signed ("Hugo L. Black") to Beryl H. Levy, about Justice Benjamin Cardozo

Washington D.C september 8 1961 Washington, D.C, september 8, 1961. 4to. 1 p.; on Supreme Court stationery. Faint horizontal creases; near fine . Justice Black thanks Levy for sending his "Realist Jurisprudence and Prospective Overruling" and offers his brief opinion of the work. Black advises caution in applying Cardozo's "Sunburst Doctrine", which permits prospective overruling: " ... such a rule would, however, mark a considerable break with past practices and therefore it is probably a good thing that there has been considerable caution exercised by judges in this field."
