(KLEIN, YVES). Wember, Paul & Yves Klein. YVES KLEIN: MONOCHROME UND FEUER - WITH THREE MONOCROME ARTIST MULTIPLES. Krefeld, GERMANY: Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, 1961. First Edition. 4to. Loose Contents in a Sleeve. Artist Monograph. Very Good. np (4pp) + np (8pp) + three loose 12 1/2 x 9 1/4" heavy cardstock sheets coated in monochrome pigment on the rectos only, 23 b&w and 1 color illustration. Text in German. With an exhibition checklist, bibliography and exhibition history. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. "Monochrome und Feuer" was the 1961 German Museum exhibition that cemented the legacy of Yves Klein in the annals of Modern Art. The event, with its then-shocking combination of static monochromes and flame-generated works has taken on near-legendary status in the half-century since its presentation at the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld. Its catalogue features a letterpress-printed essay by curator (and the subsequent compiler of the Yves Klein catalogue raisonné) Paul Wember, a twelve page insert with a checklist of the fifty-four exhibited works as well as illustrations, and most notably, three loose heavy monochrome sheets - one each in gold, hot pink, and International Klein blue - that are artist's multiples. The printed contents are crisp and fresh with the verso of the letterpress brochure showing just a few tiny brown spots on the final page. The monochromes are bright with the blue and pink silkscreen serigraphs each exhibiting a few miniscule areas of pigment loss along one edge. The gold example is as issued - without any additional foil leaf as was sometimes applied by the artist - and shows tiny crimps at two of its corners. The matte white catalogue cover exhibits some slight age-toning, soiling and handling to the exterior along with a very light diagonal soft crease at the lower foredge corner of the front panel. Its only notable condition issue is that the inside front cover shows a 4 x 3" rectangle of brown glue residue (from the removal of a previous owner's bookplate) along with some attendant tearing and surface paper loss. Still in all, this is a sharp, complete, age-appropriate example of one of the truly uncommon and sought-after documents of Twentieth Century Art literature. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         A RUN OF JACKS

Minneapolis: University of Minnesota, (1961). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine in a Fine dustwrapper. A superb Association Copy. Important first book by this Washington state poet, one of Theodore Roethke's first students, who died suddenly of leukemia in 1982 at the age of 59. A beautiful copy wonderfully INSCRIBED and SIGNED: "For Justice William O. Douglas/with profound admiration,/and hoping that you can/catch a glimpse of your/wilderness./Richard F. Hugo." Douglas, a native of Washington and the longest-serving justice in the history of the Supreme Court, was a prolific author who had extensive ties with the environmental movement. Douglas hiked the entire 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. In the landmark environmental law case, Sierra Club v. Morton, Douglas famously argued that inanimate objects such as rivers or trees should have legal standing to sue in court. A wilderness adjoining Mount Rainier National Park is named after him.

James and the Giant Peach was her first book commission, and though we have been unable to trace the recipient of this volume, she may have been a teacher or mentor who inspired Burkert to become an artist or assisted her obtaining this commission.

        Phantom Tollbooth

New York: Epstein & Carroll, 1961. First edition of this modern classic. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a very good first issue dust jacket that shows shows some chipping. Signed by the author with the added words, "From the Lands Beyond Norton Juster". Also signed by Jules Feiffer, the illustrator. A much nicer copy than usual. This book has been described by Naomi Lewis as 'the best original modern book in the Carroll line'" (Carpenter & Prichard, 409). Anyone with an appreciation for the language and irony of Alice in Wonderland will consider this witty adventure a classic. The novel begins with a miserably bored lad who exclaims that "there is nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." Suddenly a tollbooth appears in his room, and, having no other interests, the lad Milo drives through it and sets off in his toy car for a mythic journey.

Typed Letter Signed from J.D. Salinger to his publisher, dated March 10, 1961, discussing Erich Maria Remarque and Paulette Goddard

N.p.: N.p., 1961. Typed letter signed, dated March 10, 1961 in Salinger's home of Windsor, VT, to the author's editor at Little, Brown, Ned Kelly, and signed "Jerry." & & The author muses on a recently read book (taken in under his legendary sun shelter), followed by a beautiful, stray memory, and finally, a bit of simple wisdom: "I think Erich Maria Remmarque is published by Little, Brown--I know he used to be, at any rate. I took an old copy of THREE COMRADES out to my sun shelter in the snow, just a week or so ago. I'd forgotten what a beautiful, touching book it is. I think his war books and post-war-rubble books are better than anyone's. His are the onlyones that move me, anyway. I saw him once, with Paulette Goddard, at a restaurant, and nearly went over, but thought better of it. I don't think it's possible for one writer to ay another an acceptable compliment. Something always comes out wrong."& & Single leaf, recto only, with the file notation "SALINGER" in red pencil at the top left and the date (1961) circled in red as well. Near Fine, with two faint horizontal folds from mailing.

Petite histoire du soleil et de la pluie. Dessins et aquarelles de Jean-Jacques Lévêque et de Licia Bertini, en collaboration avec Gianni Bertini et Pierre-André Benoit sur le livre d'or du restaurant Camille Renault

Puteaux, 1961. Dessin. Illus. by Jean-Jacques Lévêque - Licia Bertini. Très bon. Aucune reliure.

Newsweek has called Jazzlife "... surely the most thorough and imaginative visual record of American jazz at mid-century that we'll ever see." Claxton's work is a photographic depiction of jazz artists in the 1960's, most noted for its images of Chet Baker. He has photographed for Steve McQueen and other celebrities and models, and in 1967, he created the film Basic Black. It is credited as the first "fashion video" and is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
