STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND (*** Inscribed By Robert A. Heinlein ***)

G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York (1961) - A very special copy of this science fiction classic, warmly inscribed by Robert Heinlein on the front free endpaper. Furthermore it is one of the scarcer type signatures of Heinlein in that he has signed informally as Bob Heinlein. Inscribed to a long ago collector whose bookplate is underneath the inscription/signature. Inscription reads: "To ------ --------- Best Wishes, Bob Heinlein." The person named matches the bookplate name. I have seen a similar inscribed copy, also on a bookclub edition, with a dealer asking price of $2,500. This copy thus priced very advantageously, and many collectors would consider an inscription by a classic author such as Heinlein to be superior to simply a simple signature for the sake of authentication. Book is square, tight and clean. Dust jacket has some wrinkling on the covers, especially the back cover, but the spine of the jacket is fine and there are no chips or tears to the jacket. No evident color fading to the jacket either, but the jacket is not the critical point of value of this copy. It is obviously the inscription with signature of one of the great science fiction writers of the golden age of science fiction that is the point of value of this copy. A most reasonably priced alternative to what it would cost to obtain a signed first edition copy. Photos of book and inscription upon request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Horseman, Pass By

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1961 First edition, first printing of the author's first novel. Signed and inscribed by the author on a loosely inserted business mailing card for the author's bookshop Booked Up in Washington, D.C.: "Dear Ruth- / Don't send. I'm never / here + it might get lost. / Stitch this in your book- And thanks for writing. I'm / glad you like it. Best / Larry McMurtry". A near fine or better copy, with light wear to the spine head, minor abrasion to the bottom right corner of the front board, a faint hint of spotting to the front pastedown, else very clean and bright; in an unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to the spine ends, minor chipping to the spine head, very light rubbing and smudging across, diagonal tear with minor loss to the lower right corner of the front panel. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. Horseman, Pass By is author, screenwriter, and bookseller Larry McMurtry's first novel. It is a novel "by a young Texan about a young Texan" that "paints a realistic picture of ranching Texas as it exists today." It won the Texas Institute of Letters Jesse H. Jones Award in 1962. McMurtry later helped write the screenplay for the Western film adaptation of Horseman, Pass By called Hud, which starred Paul Newman. Despite its Texan theme, the novel takes its title from W. B. Yeats' poem, "Under Ben Bulben," the last lines of which are also printed on the poet's grave.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Photograph Album]: Wheelus Air Base, Libya and Istanbul, Turkey (1961)

[Tripoli; Istanbul] 1961 - Photo album. Oblong quarto. Approximately 14" x 10". Full cloth boards with a copper plate replica of the Selimiye Mosque (Edirne, Turkey) in relief on the front cover. Very good. Contains 86 black and white photographs neatly held in place on thick paper leaves with corner mounts, interleaved with embossed tissue guards. Laid-in at the rear are five 12" x 8" pencil sketches, three travel documents, and two additional photographs. The album was put together in 1961 by Charles Simpkins of the 848th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. It is divided into one section with 36 photographs (measuring 4.5" x 3.5") of the Wheelus U.S. Air Force Base in Libya (now Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport), and a second section with 50 photographs (measuring 5" x 3.5") of various street scenes taken in Istanbul, Turkey. Laid-in is Simpkins's Signed travel voucher from 1961.The Libyan set of 36 prints are identified with manuscript captions written in white ink on the paper sheet directly underneath each print. This historic base, known as the "Hell Hole" for its scorching heat, was built by the Italians in 1923 and was used by the Germans during the North African Campaign. Captured by the British in 1943, it was taken over by the Americans in 1945 and became home to 4,500 Americans at the height of the Cold War. The photographs document the base when it was being used for a covert airlift campaign during the Congo Crisis of the early 1960s. They include shots of USAF 124s and other planes on the flight line during the Airlift, and various street scenes taken throughout the base: Arab laborers, the Mirage restaurant, the NCO club, a Jewish Chapel, and much more. Also included are shots of Americans and Libyans at leisure on the beach. The second set of 50 prints is a fascinating series of informal street scenes taken in Istanbul while Simpkins was most likely on vacation in September 1961. As none are identified, one can easily get lost among these shots of Turkish vendors, peddlers, musicians, and horse drawn carts, as they make their way through street markets and carnivals, with the occasional view of a mosque's minarets in the background. Various candid portraits include children at play, boys playing foosball, and all manner of outdoor vendors selling their wares. The five laid in pencil sketches are reasonably accomplished drawings of a B-718 USAF jet in flight, a Brayer tank truck, a Mercedes 300 SL, an old Roadster, and a World War I British fighter plane.         Thunderball

London: Jonathan Cape. 1961. - FIRST EDITION, First Issue, Binding A. 8vo., pp. 254. Publisher's cloth-effect paper over boards with embossed skeleton hand design to upper board, gilt titles to spine. In original dust-wrapper illustrated by Richard Chopping. A very near fine copy in a fresh dust-wrapper which has some minimal edgewear and one discreet closed tear to upper. This copy was originally exported to Canada, purchased in Ottawa, and has remained in the same collection since. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). Anb omnibus edition was published in 2010. The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story. Gilbert A9a (1.1). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        FLOATING BEAR: A Newsletter, Nos. 2-38 [A Near-Complete Run/Set, Tuli Kupferberg's Copies]

New York and San Francisco: The Floating Bear, 1961-1971. First Edition. Wraps. Very Fine. Original top- or side-stapled 8.5" x 11" mimeograph wraps. Toning, light wear. Usual mailing marks. Occasional chipping and tearing. Generally very good. Whole numbers 2 through 38, a near complete run (lacking only nos. oone, eleven, and thirty-three) of this seminal publication of the Mimeo Revolution and one of the most influential little magazines of the 1960's. Distributed by mailing list, FB served as an important venue for the poets of the Beat and New York schools, as well as other experimental and avant garde writers of the decade: Ginsberg, Olson, Burroughs, O'Hara, Dorn, Creeley, Duncan, Wieners, Ashbery, etc. From issue 28 on includes pictorial covers by artists such as Ray Johnson, Michael Bowen, Jess, George Hermas, Wallace Berman, and others. Includes the rare issue #24. A landmark of the mimeo form, as important to the movement as Sander's FU or Berrigan's "C," and a monumental association: Tuli Kupferberg's copies, with most issues addressed to him either by hand or with mailing label (and one issue with a brief holograph note to Kupferberg from Di Prima). The late great poet, musician, editor and publisher was of course Fug bandmates with FU publisher Ed Sanders. In addition, Kupferberg published Di Prima and Jones in his own little magazine of the period, BIRTH. An intimate of the mimeo crowd and the Lower East Side scene from which it grew, one of the most desirable sets we could imagine. [Clay and Phillips pp. 74-75]. [Anderson and Kinzie 699-700].

Burgess 99, pp. 61-62. & "Sword of Honour is not merely the story of one man's battles; it is the whole history of the European struggle itself, told with verve, humour, pathos and sharp accuracy." (Burgess). In fact, it was not planned as a trilogy. Following Officers and Gentlemen, the second installment, Waugh decided he had said all he had to say about the experiences of Guy Crouchback, heir of a declining aristocratic English Roman Catholic family who, like Waugh, participated in the Dakar expedition, served a stint with the commandos, experienced the débâcle on Crete, and ended the war in Yugoslavia. But Waugh later changed his mind and completed the sequence with Unconditional Surrender. In 1966, he pruned, revised and issued the trilogy as Sword of Honour (the title is drawn from the ceremonial sword, the "Sword of Stalingrad," made "at the King's command," to be presented to the Soviet Union in recognition of the sacrifices the Soviets made against the Nazis. Before being sent to Moscow, it was put on display in Westminster Abbey where long queues of people "suffused with gratitude to their remote allies" come to worship it. Guy Crouchback is unmoved and chooses not to visit, as he is distinctly not impressed by Joseph Stalin.) But, according to Burgess, "Most readers prefer to take the items severally and in their unrevised form." In the event, it is generally regarded as Waugh’s finest achievement in fiction, with its "fine war reportage and superb comic action." Waugh received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Men at Arms.
