        YOUR TEENS AND MINE

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., (1961). First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper. SIGNED by the former First Lady on the front endpaper. Roosevelt advises how a teen-age girl can grow to be a gracious lady by recounting her own experiences of overcoming shyness and facing her fears. A few pages in the penultimate chapter have pencil and pen markings with some words crossed out and a few added, apparently in preparation for reading from the chapter. The handwriting does not appear to be Roosevelt's but possibly may be Ferris's. In any case, it's an interesting alteration to an already uncommon book, especially when autographed.

        Franny and Zooey

Boston: Little, Brown and Company. (1961). First. Uncorrected galleys. String-tied in unprinted gray wrappers with applied title label. Printed rectos only. Slight crease on the front wrap, modest age-toning, else near fine, with the title handwritten on the spine as "Franny and Zooy" [sic]. Laid in are a press release, a publicity statement to booksellers, and a seasonal pamphlet reviewing the book. The press release, on Little, Brown stationery, is most interesting as it details an August publication date (the book was eventually published in September) and also announces that the book would contain an introduction by Salinger (the little additional text that he reluctantly provided was used on the jacket flaps and there is no introduction within the book itself). Additionally, these galleys lack the dedication page added to the published book. By the late 1950s Salinger had become so disillusioned with the marketing practices of publishers that he broke all ties with his English publisher after they allowed Nine Stories to be published with a garish cover. With Little, Brown he stipulated that there would be no advance publicity for the book, that it would have simple and understated art design, and that Salinger himself would provide the jacket text. Rare -- we know of only a handful of other copies. .

Vintage 8" x 10" photograph of Frost seated outside a house next to a woman (the recipient?) with two men seated on each side of them, with the stamp of the photographer on the verso: John F. Smith, Jr. of Middlebury, Vermont. Loosely inserted into a mat on which at the bottom is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the poet: "to Elaine McAllister from Robert Frost Bread Loaf VT '61/Christmas greetings." It is likely that the other seated men are writers and/or teachers at Bread Loaf, but we were unable to identify them.

Between Heaven and Hell: A Symposium

Big Sur CA: Emil White. 1961. First. First edition, deluxe clothbound issue. Small square quarto. Boards a bit bowed, as seems usual with this title, and some age-toning to the edges of the boards, else a near fine copy without dustwrapper as issued. Inscribed by Miller to Sydney Omarr: "To Sydney, 'Who's always right!' Henry 11/9/64." Omarr was the "astrologer to the stars" and published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers; his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. He started out during the Second World War at the age of 17 when his predictions of horse races, boxing matches, and other sporting events were broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. Omarr and Miller became close friends, sharing the same tastes. Omarr liked to surround himself with beautiful women and was the personal adviser to Jayne Mansfield, Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, and Mae West, among others. Omarr wrote a book on Miller, Henry Miller: His World of Urania, and Miller wrote the introduction to Sydney Omarr's Astrological Guide to 1973 and the liner notes to the record album Presenting Sydney Omarr. A very nice association. .

Three Programs for Events Held at Yoko Ono's Chambers Street Apartment

New York 1961 - Four mimeographed typescript sheets, printed rectos only. Quartos. Overall very good with two sheets bright and fresh but two faded and somewhat toned, all with various old folds. Three programs from the historic concerts and performance series organized by La Monte Young and held at Yoko Ono's Chamber Street apartment that featured many of the top artists of New York's avant-garde scene including John Cage, Dick Higgins, Walter DeMaria, Terry Riley, Jackson Mac Low, Robert Morris, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Jim Dine, and Ono. The series closely paralleled the European shows being produced by George Maciunas of his newly developing Fluxus movement, that itself was inspired by The Dadaist. The Chambers Street shows led Maciunas to invite Ono to join his fledgling group and helped coalesce the various artists that would become the core members of Fluxus. The first two sheets are for a two-night musical performance by Inchiyanagi on January 7 and 8, 1961 featuring various performers such as Young, Mac Low, Richard Maxfield, Simone Morris, David Tudor, and with a number dedicated to John Cage. The verso of the first sheet has several lines of pseudonymous verse in pencil that we suspect may be that of Mac Low. The second sheet, which we assume was handed out the second night and calls this "#2 in the series presented by La Monte Young," warns the audience "THE PURPOSE OF THIS SERIES IS NOT ENTERTAINMENT," and promotes the next event featuring Henry Flynt, whose program is also included here. That program, "#3" dated February 25 and 26, describes the event as "experimental concert Jazz, Flynt-music, or poetry [that] will be improvised" with accompaniment by Young, De Maria, Morris, and others. The fourth sheet (and third program) focuses on the poetry, music and theater work of Mac Low. Also held over two nights, April 8 and 9, 1961, the pieces are based on works composed between 1955 and 1961 and performed with help from Diane Wakowski, Robert Dunn, Shimon Tamari, Joan Kelly, John Perreault, and Iris Lezak.A wonderful collection of ephemera from a pivot moment in the development of Fluxus.
