        The Winter of Our Discontent

n.p. (NY), The Viking Press, 1961, first edition, wrappers. Softcover. Advance copy, a spiral-bound uncorrected galley proof, printed on rectos only, a very scarce state of the book made all the more rare in that it is an Author Presentation Copy, being Inscribed by Steinbeck to the best man at his second wedding, Howard O. Hunter, who was the Works Progress Administration (WPA) commissioner in the early 1940s in the FDR administration, Steinbeck inscribed the front cover as follows: "For Edna and/Howard Hunter/with the deepest/affection/John Steinbeck," he amended his inscription a little lower on the front cover by noting "Please remember/that it is uncorrected," the proof has one preliminary after which the novel begins, thus it lacks the published version's half titles, title and copyright pages, a list of other books by the author, the dedication page and a page stating that people and places within the book are fictional, although the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded for the body of an author's work and not a specific book, it is generally believed that Steinbeck won the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature because of this morality story, laid in loosely is a brief typed signed letter from a relative of Edna Hunter, Ellen Leonard, which provides some provenance, it states "The Winter of Our Discontent an uncorrected galley was given to me by my great aunt Edna Hunter. She was married to Howard O. Hunter who was deputy administrator to the WPA during the FDR administration in the early 1940's," this advanced state is not recorded by Goldstone & Payne or Morrow, now housed in a beautiful clamshell case with leather spine. Very good.

        James and the Giant Peach

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, (1961) - First Edition, First state copy of this classic of 20th century children’s literature. Basis, of course, for the blockbuster Henry Selick-directed 1996 fil. This copy, illustrated by Nancy Ekholm Burkert, in its fresh and unblemished red cloth is, in every way, truly Fine. A beautiful example. The original pictorial dust jacket, however, can be best described as very good. Certainly complete, and not price-clipped, it has some chips, primarily at extremities, but is mitigated in great part by the brilliance of the book itself, and is certainly priced accordingly.         Cancellation cover Commemorating the World Chess Championship rematch of 1961

One sheet cover with cancelled stamp and decorative chess board in black on light green paper. Commemorative cancel to stamp. Signed by both players, Mikhail Tal and Mikhail Botvinnik, in blue ink, dated by Botvinnik 12 May 1961. Event covers are decorated, stamped and canceled commemorative envelopes. They are created to celebrate an event or note an anniversary. The design (called a "cachet") is generally placed on the left side of the envelope (although there are also "all over" cachets). It explains what is being commemorated on what date, and some times includes an illustration page. Ideally, the stamps used relate to the celebration. Cancels are either obtained in the city of the event. If a special cancellation (one with a design) has been created for the event, you can generally only receive that cancel from the local post office.Mikhail Tal (Latvian: Mihails T?ls; Russian: ?????? ?????????? ????, Michail Nechem'evi? Tal, [m?ix??i? n???x?m??v?it?? ?tal]; sometimes transliterated Mihails Tals or Mihail Tal; November 9, 1936 ?" June 28, 1992) was a Soviet-Latvian chess Grandmaster and the eighth World Chess Champion. Widely regarded as a creative genius and the best attacking player of all time, he played in a daring, combination style. His play was known above all for improvisation and unpredictability. Every game, he once said, was as inimitable and invaluable as a poem. He was often called "Misha", a diminutive for Mikhail, and "The magician from Riga". Both The Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games (Burgess, Nunn & Emms 2004) and Modern Chess Brilliancies (Evans 1970) include more games by Tal than any other player. Tal was also a highly regarded chess writer. He also holds the records for both the first and second longest unbeaten streaks in competitive chess history. On May 28, 1992, dying from kidney failure, he left hospital to play at the Moscow blitz tournament, where he defeated Garry Kasparov. He died one month later. The Mikhail Tal Memorial is held in Moscow each year since 2006 to honor his memory.Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik, PhD (Russian: ??????? ?????????? ?'?????????, pronounced [m?ixa?i?? m?i?s???j?v?it?? b?t??v?in?n??ik]; August 17 [O.S. August 4] 1911 ?" May 5, 1995) was a Soviet and Russian International Grandmaster and three-time World Chess Champion. Working as an electrical engineer and computer scientist at the same time, he was one of the very few famous chess players who achieved distinction in another career while playing top-class competitive chess. He was also a pioneer of computer chess. Botvinnik was the first world-class player to develop within the Soviet Union (Alekhine was a top player before the Russian Revolution), putting him under political pressure but also giving him considerable influence within Soviet chess. From time to time he was accused of using that influence to his own advantage, but the evidence is unclear and some suggest he resisted attempts by Soviet officials to intimidate some of his rivals. Botvinnik also played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II and becoming a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. His famous pupils include World Champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik. The 1961 World Chess Championship was played between former champion Mikhail Botvinnik and champion Mikhail Tal in Moscow from March 15 to May 13, 1961. Tal had unseated Botvinnik in the 1960 match, thus Botvinnik was entitled to this rematch the next year. Botvinnik, a Russian, defeated Latvian Tal to regain the world championship.Condition:Some edge wear with the top opening being slit in very good condition.

This Mercury VII astronaut, the third astronaut in space (1961), was killed in a flash fire during the simulation of the Apollo I launching. IPS (newspaper), 4 3/4" X 7¼", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1961]. Very good. Would be fine but for single 1" tape stain at right edge, not terribly noticeable and not touching the holograph; neither age toning nor brittleness evident. Candid newspaper photograph, a closeup showing Grissom, still in space suit, speaking with President Kennedy on the phone from aboard the aircraft Carrier "Randolph" just after being plucked from the ocean. At lower right corner, in bright blue fountain pen, Grissom boldly inscribes it "Best wishes to Donald Burnell / Virgil I. Grissom." Even in this newsprint form, quite handsome and quite scarce.

Typed Letter Signed with fine literary content

New York, 1961. unbound. 1 page, 10.5 x 8.25 inches, written on April 11, 1961, during her New York City residency to Civil Rights and Constitutional law attorney Howard Meyer, critiquing an article in which Meyer could not find a publisher [criticizing the glorification of the Confederacy], in part: "...I am, to say the least, deeply impressed. Above all, that scholars are still able to decipher what has been done to parts of American history to come to likely conclusions at all! I had begun to fear that the causes and betrayal of the Civil War were lost almost forever...I cannot imagine who will publish an editorialized point of view - unless, of course, it is from the other viewpoint. I don't think you have licked the problem in your presentation. You give the readers the impression that there is something wrong with them for thinking as they do...I don't think any editor will chance that since his inclination will be that controversy must go only in popular directions. I think then that it might be well to write your article again in a more tempered spirit; from the point of view that what must be achieved is its publication. In the present situation they would not be in the least impressed if I sent it to them. Despite its excellence, it reads as but another tract on the Negro and, if anything, I am merely suspect as a propagandist already."
