For the New Intellectual: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand

New York: Random House, 1961.. New York: Random House, 1961. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "To Deems -Affectionately Ayn 4/7/61." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. The recipient, Deems Taylor was an American composer and music critic and a close personal friend of Ayn Rand. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional association copy. Rand's 1961 book For The New Intellectual outlines her philosophical system of Objectivism by means of excerpts from We The Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged… She then opens the book with an essay on the cultural bankruptcy that has undermined the capitalistic system of the United States. The essay is directed at 'the New Intellectuals' needed to restore and defend a capitalist economy in the face of that cultural bankruptcy. Rand is very clear that neither pragmatic nor economic argument is what must be used. Instead, it is arguments for 'a new morality of rational self-interest' that will provide the foundation for a new capitalist culture" (Bostaph, Journal of Ayn Rand Studies 11:1,20).

Profusely illustrated in color and black and white. Inscribed on the half title page, "For _______, William Claxton". Near fine in a very good dust jacket which shows some wear and tear. Still a nice copy of an uncommon book. Newsweek has called Jazzlife "... surely the most thorough and imaginative visual record of American jazz at mid-century that we'll ever see." Claxton's work is a photographic depiction of jazz artists in the 1960's, most noted for its images of Chet Baker. He has photographed for Steve McQueen and other celebrities and models, and in 1967, he created the film Basic Black. It is credited as the first "fashion video" and is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

        TROPIC OF CANCER

New York Grove Press 1961 - First authorized and first trade edition issued in America. With a long introduction by Karl Shapiro and a preface by Anais Nin. 8vo., publisher's original cloth backed boards in dustjacket. xxxiii, 318 pp. A handsome, clean and pleasing copy, some light evidence of age or shelving to the dustjacket, the book very fine. FIRST AUTHORIZED AND FIRST TRADE EDITION ISSUED IN AMERICA. Of the book, John Ciardi said, [it] "is a substantial work of art. The violence of Miller's attack on orthodoxy and falseness is indispensable to his human vision of things. In [the book] the test is ferocity, a ferocious and yet naive sincerity that castigates all sham. It cannot fail to be moral finally, because the ferocity is radically moral. And because the author is an artist--a very good one, as the continued 'underground life' of the book attests." Ours is a very nice copy of this classic. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Furthermore it is one of the scarcer type signatures of Heinlein in that he has signed informally as Bob Heinlein. Inscribed to a long ago collector whose bookplate is underneath the inscription/signature. Inscription reads: "To ------ --------- Best Wishes, Bob Heinlein." The person named matches the bookplate name. I have seen a similar inscribed copy, also on a bookclub edition, with a dealer asking price of $2,500. This copy thus priced very advantageously, and many collectors would consider an inscription by a classic author such as Heinlein to be superior to simply a simple signature for the sake of authentication. Book is square, tight and clean. Dust jacket has some wrinkling on the covers, especially the back cover, but the spine of the jacket is fine and there are no chips or tears to the jacket. No evident color fading to the jacket either, but the jacket is not the critical point of value of this copy. It is obviously the inscription with signature of one of the great science fiction writers of the golden age of science fiction that is the point of value of this copy. A most reasonably priced alternative to what it would cost to obtain a signed first edition copy. Photos of book and inscription upon request. . SIGNED BY ROBERT A. HEINLEIN. BCE. Hardcover. Near Fine/Abt. Very Good. Octavo, 414pp.

        Thunderball

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First Edition. Near fine in dust jacket. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author, ?To Jonathan Miller from the Author.? Fleming, an antiquarian book collector himself, was clearly very much aware of old conventions slipping away, and often adhered to this old custom of inscribing books from ?the Author.? In the nineteenth-century, it is not uncommon to find the closest associations; to a wife, mother, child, friend, etc., presented in this manner. In our day, this would seem cold, peculiar, or incomplete, but it does have a certain old-fashioned charm that antiquarian books are supposedly cherished for.

The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning. . . . [It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments." For the New Intellectual: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand.

Random House, New York 1961 - First edition. "Rand's 1961 book For The New Intellectual outlines her philosophical system of Objectivism by means of excerpts from We The Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged She then opens the book with an essay on the cultural bankruptcy that has undermined the capitalistic system of the United States.
