Original, complete typescript of his comment on the 1982 'Economic Report of the President: The Annual Report of the Council of Economic Advisers'. With numerous handwritten corrections and additions. 19 leaves, white and yellow paper, signed. Impressive critique of the first year of the Reaganomic policy, written one year after Tobin had been awarded the Nobel Prize.

. . The comment was to be published in a forthcoming issue of the 'Journal of Monetary Economics'. Tobin was, besides teaching and research at Harvard and Yale University, strongly involved in the public life, writing on current economic issues and working as an economic expert and policy consultant. During 1961-62, he himself had served as a member of John F. Kennedy's Council of Economic Advisors, then as a consultant between 1962-68. The 1982 report he comments here, was the first after Ronald Reagan's election and so was "the occasion for his advisers to expound in full detail the administration's economic strategy and its rationale" (Tobin, S. 1). "The 1982 Report is a manifesto of counter-revolution." (Tobin, S. 2). "The Report holds out little hope for fiscal policy as a tool of stabilization." (Tobin, S. 10). "No article of Reaganomic faith is more central than the proposition that the economic difficulties of recent years are due to the growth of the federal government." (Tobin, S. 14). Attached his signed, printed portrait and a signed letter concerning the typescript.

Privately Printed; Marlborough College Press , 1961. Privately Printed; Marlborough College Press , 1961. First and sole edition, line block frontispiece in black and white. Original Cambridge blue stapled wrappers with black lettering. Staples slightly rusty as usual, otherwise a fine copy. Woodblock frontispiece by J. Pritchard. By a long way Golding's scarcest work. "First printed in 'The Listener', this pamphlet was commissioned by E. G. H. Kempson, and executed by L. J. Randle (now printer at the Whittington Press - this being his first piece of printing). Mrs Kempson recalls that only 20 or 30 copies were printed, though John Randle suggests that the figure may have been closer to 100." - Gekoski & Grogan

Typed letter signed regarding the layout of Franny and Zooey

N.p., 1961. N.p.: N.p., 1961. First Edition. Typed letter signed, dated May 27, 1961 at his home in Windsor, Vermont, to Mary Rackliffe, head copy editor at Little, Brown, regarding a disagreement about the running titles for the forthcoming publication of "Franny and Zooey." & & In the letter, Salinger objects strongly to the use of the full "Franny and Zooey" as the header over both stories, instead insisting that they simply be "Franny" and "Zooey" respectively. He acknowledges that the layout department may "feel that those single, short titles dress the page badly or unnicely," and by way of rebuttal directs them to "have a look at the last story in my collection 'Nine Stories'... the word 'Teddy' looks perfectly reasonable carried as a running header."& & He then makes an apology to Rackliffe for "directing my complaints at you personally," but that "this affair of the Running Heads doesn't exactly inspire confidence" and is "very hard to take."& & A fascinating letter, reflecting Salinger's well known insistence on having input into the final design and printing of his books. In the end, unsurprisingly, Salinger got what he wanted and the running titles were changed between the proof and the First Edition to reflect his preference.& & 8.5 x 11 inches, single sheet, rectos only. SIGNED as "J.D. Salinger." Fine condition, folded twice for mailing, with two staple holes to the upper left corner. Also included is the original mailing envelope, postmarked May 29, 1961, from Salinger to Rackliffe at Little, Brown in Boston, MA, in Near Fine condition.

Grove Press, New York 1961 - A very good copy of the stated first Grove Press hard cover edition in a somewhat poor (not price-clipped: $3.50) dust-jacket. No previous ownership marks or signatures. The text is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the red cloth binding is still quite bright and fresh in appearance, though there is some evident dulling to the gilt lettering on the spine. A bit of incipient foxing to the endpapers. Abundant intact tears and fraying to the extremities of the jacket, wiith surface rubbing and loss of the gloss to front and rear jacket panels. All in all a handsome copy of the rare first Grove Press edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Various sizes (most in the range of 27.5 x 22 cm. to 26 x 15.5 cm.), stored in plastic sleeves in a recent binder. A few light stains and some blurring of ink, but legible throughout. Overall in very good to fine condition. ---- Collection of 58 autograph letters (on 62 leaves) and 1 autograph postcard, all signed and dated, plus 3 envelopes (with stamps). Serpa, in Porto or nearby Leça da Palmeira, was writing to Eduardo Salgueiro at Editorial Inquérito in Lisbon. He addresses him as "Meu caro Salgueiro" and signs as "Alberto de Serpa," "A. de Serpa," or "Alberto." The letters deal with editorial matters: clearly Serpa favored the squeaky-wheel approach to dealing with his publisher.Alberto de Serpa Esteves de Oliveira (Porto, 1906-1992), poet, dramatist, essayist and book collector, attended the University of Coimbra for 3 years but was more interested in collaborating with the writers of @Presença than in studying. He published his first novel, @Saudade do mar, at age 17, and 2 collections of poetry (@Quadras and @Evoé), but it was 2 later collections, @Varanda, 1934, and @Vinte poemas da noite, 1935, that led to his unanimous recognition by critics as an important modern poet. Casais Monteiro says that Serpa, along with Branquinho da Fonseca, Carlos Queirós and Francisco Bugalho, gave us "um novo aspecto do abandono egoísta a um eu inadaptado à acção ? [Serpa] tem, na poesia, não uma via de contacto com a realidade, mas, por assim dizer, um instrumento a cuja musica embala a sua dolorosa impressão de diferença e de incompatibilidade" (p. 239).After his years in Coimbra, Serpa returned to his native Porto where he became an insurance broker, presumably for the Companhia de Seguros Ourique, whose letterhead he uses several times. Serpa also wrote the literary page in the important Porto newspaper @O Primeiro de Janeiro. He was imprisoned for political reasons in 1936, and at the same period became once again a fervent Catholic. Throughout his life he contributed to Portuguese literary reviews, including @A Águia, @Aventura, @Cadernos de poesia, @Cavalo de todas as cores (co-editor), @Diálogo, @Momento, @Presença (editor of the second series, 1939-40), @Quatro ventos and @Tríptico. He also wrote works on António Nobre, José Régio, and others. Serpa's collection of books and manuscripts, over 2,600 items focusing on modern Portuguese literature, was sold at auction in 1988. The sale catalogue reveals many presentation copies to Serpa of books by major figures of the first and second wave of Portuguese modernism, such as Fernando Pessoa, António Botto, Almada Negreiros, António Ferro, José Rêgio, Miguel Torga, Branquinho da Fonseca, as well as important writers from other schools, such as Teixeira de Pascoaes, Eugénio de Castro, Jorge de Sena, etc.Eduardo Salgueiro (b. Moimenta da Beira, 1904) studied law, but soon showed a preference for journalism. In the 1920s he was editor of @O Comércio do Porto and @O Século, and founded the weekly @A República. In 1928 he founded Editorial Inquérito, which helped revive Portugal's stagnant publishing industry, encouraged a renaissance in graphic design, and became an important influence in the cultural life of the time. Editorial Inquérito published many hundreds of works under Salgueiro's direction, including the debuts of many Portuguese authors. From time to time it ran afoul of the political police of Salazar's Estado Novo. Salgueiro also issued five books of his own poetry and translations such as @História do pensamento social.A sample of the contents of the letters:1944, 1 July: "Lembre ao Snr. Revisor que a ortografia adoptada no meu livro é a oficial, e não a da Academia."1944, 24 July: "Você foi o primeiro editor a bater à minha porta com uma proposta de edição para os meus

Folie et Déraison. Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique.

Paris, Plon, (1961). 8vo. Uncut - and partly unopened - in the original printed wrappers and with the original illustrated dust-jacket (with the Goya-illustration from Caprices). In Excellent condition. Very nice and clean. Dust-jacket with a few marginal tears. (6), XI, (1), 672, (2, -table), (8, - advertisements), (2, - colophon) pp. + loosely laid-in advertisement leaf.. Rare first edition, review-copy ("S.P." on title-page and back wrapper) in the extremely scarce dust-jacket, of Foucault's first major work, his groundbreaking "History of Madness", which has had an enormous impact on human sciences. It is this work that established Foucault's name as one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century. "When it was first published in France in 1961 as "Folie et Déraison: Histoire de la Folie à l'âge Classique", few had heard of a thirty-four year old philosopher by the name of Michel Foucault. By the time an abridged English edition was published in 1967 as "Madness and Civilization", Michel Foucault had shaken the intellectual world." (Jean Khalfa, Michel Foucault: History of Madness, 2006). The brilliantly written work marks two turning points of lasting importance: 1) A turning point in the history of human sciences, providing a focus on madness as a generative force and the as a shaping power in the history of thought. Foucault famously argued that what was presented as an objective, incontrovertible scientific discovery (that madness is mental illness) was in fact the product of eminently questionable social and ethical commitments.2) A turning point in Foucault's own thought, away from phenomenology toward structuralism. Although he uses the language of phenomenology to describe an evolving experience of "the other" as mad, he attributes this evolution to the influence of specific powerful social structures. The book, written while Foucault was director of a French cultural centre attached to the University of Uppsala in Sweden, constitutes a grand examination of the evolving relationship between madness and European culture, law, politics, philosophy and medicine, beginning with the Middle Ages. It furthermore constitutes a critique of historical method and the idea of history. Foucault begins his "History of Madness" in the Middle Ages, describing the exclusion and confinement of lepers as well as the emergence of madhouses, asking the question why, in 1656, within months, one out of every hundred people in Paris was confined.Shifting from Descartes and early Enlightenment thought to the founding of the Hôpital Général in Paris and the work of early psychiatrists Philippe Pinel and Samuel Tuke, Foucault focuses throughout, not only on scientific and medical analyses of madness, but also on the philosophical and cultural values that hinge on madness, urging us, for instance, to acknowledge the creative and liberating forces that madness represents (exemplified by Goya, Nietzsche, Van Gogh, Artaud)."The History of Madness" is an inspiring and classic work that challenges us to understand madness, reason and power and the forces that shape them."       Aschehoug, Oslo 1961. 1. oplag. 216 sider.

        Correspondence with Lütfi Özkök.

A collection of original letters, postcards and telegrams sent to the poet and photographer Lütfi Özkök. The collection consists of 84 letters, 14 postcards, 4 poems in handwriting, 7 telegrams and a few miscellaneous items, such as a letter to Özkök from Marie-Claude, the last woman in Char's life. Özkök met with Char for the first time through Michel Deguy in 1961. The meeting resulted in a photo session in Char's Paris apartment, and their more than 25-year long correspondance began shortly thereafter. Özkök's next visit, to Char's home in l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, was made in 1967, when they started to make plans for a cooperation on a photo book on the Vaucluse area, where Char lived and where he also grew up. It resulted in a short film by Özkök on Char's poetry, released in 1972 and broadcast by Swiss-Italian television. Özkök made several trips to l'Isle-surla-Sorgue during the following years, as the friendship developed between the two. The last visit was made in July 1987, shortly before the death of Char. Özkök is the photographer behind several of the wide-spread portraits of Char, who refers to a photo by Özkök in one of the letters, saying that he wishes to be remembered exactly the way he appears on that photo.
