The Winter of Our Discontent.

n.p. (NY), The Viking Press, 1961 - n.p. (NY), The Viking Press, 1961, first edition, wrappers. Softcover. Advance copy, a spiral-bound uncorrected galley proof, printed on rectos only, a very scarce state of the book made all the more rare in that it is an Author Presentation Copy, being Inscribed by Steinbeck to the best man at his second wedding, Howard O. Hunter, who was the Works Progress Administration (WPA) commissioner in the early 1940s in the FDR administration, Steinbeck inscribed the front cover as follows: "For Edna and/Howard Hunter/with the deepest/affection/John Steinbeck," he amended his inscription a little lower on the front cover by noting "Please remember/that it is uncorrected," the proof has one preliminary after which the novel begins, thus it lacks the published version's half titles, title and copyright pages, a list of other books by the author, the dedication page and a page stating that people and places within the book are fictional, although the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded for the body of an author's work and not a specific book, it is generally believed that Steinbeck won the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature because of this morality story, laid in loosely is a brief typed signed letter from a relative of Edna Hunter, Ellen Leonard, which provides some provenance, it states "The Winter of Our Discontent an uncorrected galley was given to me by my great aunt Edna Hunter. She was married to Howard O. Hunter who was deputy administrator to the WPA during the FDR administration in the early 1940's," this advanced state is not recorded by Goldstone & Payne or Morrow, now housed in a beautiful clamshell case with leather spine. Very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

New York: A Torquil Book Distributed by Dodd, Mead & Company, [1961] - Octavo, boards. First edition, trade issue with dust jacket priced "$2.95." The dedication copy with signed inscription by Anderson to John W. Campbell "who started it all." Fix-up novel comprising "Tomorrow's Children" and "Logic," with a new final section. "Tomorrow's Children" (co- authored by F. N. Waldrop) was Anderson's first published SF story. It was accepted for publication by Campbell and appeared in the March 1947 issue of ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION. "Logic" was published in the July 1947 issue of ASTOUNDING. "Dour adventure in a world of genetic mutations caused by an all-out nuclear war. In its early form this was one of the first sf stories to deal with this theme." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 390. The final section of the story, however, is upbeat, Earth's mutants, now Homo superior, have colonized most of the Solar System and have begun a project to terraform the blasted, ruined Earth. A fine copy in bright, near fine dust jacket with light rubbing at spine ends. One of Anderson's scarcest U.S. hardcover books and very elusive in superior condition. A superb association copy. Glendale: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 1961. - First edition. 8vo. First limited edition of 209 copies. This copy was released one year prior to the red cloth trade edition. The correct first edition issued in only a miniscule printing of 209 copies, of which none were offered for sale. Copies were given to descendants of John D. Lee as well as to friends of the publisher and author. Blue cloth, blue foil stamping on spine and rules, top edge stained blue, 404 pp., frontis. [portrait of John Doyle Lee], introduction, illustrated, plates, portraits, bibliographical note, index. AHC 35 says, "This biography received an award of merit from the Association for State and Local History upon publication. Lee was the only man convicted of perpetrating the Mountain Meadows Massacre. His detailed diaries of his life in southern Utah, before and after the massacre, were edited by Brooks and published by the Huntington Library. The diary for the period of the massacre has never been released by the L.D.S. archives." Brooks was a niece of LeRoy Hafen, and an extremely competent scholar, friend of Dale Morgan, and indefatigable searcher of the truth. She faced considerable criticism within the Mormon Church, of which she remained a devout member, as a result of her scholarly writings. Juanita Brooks grew up in southern Utah and learned of the infamous massacre of 1857 through vague rumors and whispered stories. She was determined to learn the truth about the Mountain Meadows Massacre and eventually published her masterpiece, THE MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE in 1950. This led to a lifelong interest in John D. Lee, and her two subsequent major publications: the massive two volume DIARIES OF JOHN D. LEE, published in 1955 by the Huntington Library, and this full length biography of Lee, first published in 1961. Former owner's bookplate on front free fly leaf, and inked name and address on front pastedown sheet, lightly rubbed along edges and corners, else near fine copy in a custom made cloth slipcase with leather label on spine. Very scarce edition of this important work. AHC 35. SIX GUNS 286. MATTES 305. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Japan Council Against the A and H Bombs, Tokyo 1961 - np + 54pp, profusely illustrated in duotone. Text in English. Designed by Kohei Sugiura. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. This is Ken Domon and Shomei Tomatsu's remarkable book of photographs reflecting the aftermath of the atomic bombs the US dropped on The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hasten the end World War II. In addition to the gripping hardbound volume of images, it contains a second English language publication in wrappers reprinting scholarly articles by Kiyoshi Sakuma, Nobuo Kusano, Toshio Hata on the radiation and its effects. A serviceable example only of this remarkable Post-War Japanese photographic book lacking the publisher's slipcase, and whose primary volume's off-white exterior is browned along the spine, moderately soiled, and exhibits notable insect damage to the ink of its decorative design of concentric circles. Internally it is bright and sound, with the textblock lightly browned along the edges and pulling ever so slightly at the signatures. The paper text volume shows some overall wear, light browning and soiling to the covers and edges, cracking along the spine, and a small closed tear to the foredge corner of the front cover. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Horseman, Pass By

Harper, NY 1961 - McMurtry's first book, one of A.C. Greene's "50 best books on Texas," basis for the movie Hud, and winner of the Jesse H. Jones Award from the Texas Institute of Letters for the best novel of the year. Horseman, Pass By, which takes its title from the closing lines of William Butler Yeats's poem "Under Ben Bulben" (as did Mary McCarthy's first novel, Cast a Cold Eye), was a breakthrough in Texas literature and in regional literature in general: by telling a raw, unadulterated story entirely fitting to its contemporary West Texas setting, McMurtry not only brought the regional novel out of its quaint gentility but gave it a universality it could not have had otherwise; it has been called a West Texas Catcher in the Rye, with the caveat that the lives of Texans in general were a little more crude than those of the Easterners in Salinger's novel. Faint foxing to foredge and endpages; still a very near fine copy in a very near fine, lightly rubbed, price-clipped dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz

Alfred A Knopf, New York 1961 - 92 pages. Oblong octavo (7 1/4" x 8 3/4") issued in quarter bound beautiful full-color cubist-styled paper boards over an off-white linen spine with black stamping to the spine. The text block is printed on pink paper with brown lettering. inscribed by Hughes. First edition. In language bursting with sound and rhythm-angry, blue, fiercely ironic, funny, and haunting-Langston Hughes has unleashed here a sequence of brilliant jazz poetry that cannot fail to stir even the tone-deaf. These are poems that demand to be read aloud, and whether or not the proper instruments are handy, the description, line by line, of the musical accompaniment which appears beside the verse is so vivid that the music can be imagined. The language derives its is so vivid that the music can be imagined. The language derives its inspiration from the jazz, taking off at moments like a solo instrument, pounding you like bongo drums, moving in free association. But beneath the flights of fancy is a thematic unity, and you are drawn back to the refrains "in the quarter of the Negro" and, when you are stuck for answers, "ask your mama." Throughout, the verse is studded with topical allusions. You feel the voice of the Negro everywhere-not just in Harlem or "63rd and Chi," but in Lumumba-land and Trinidad, wherever he casts his shadow and is being heard from today in an every mounting, many-tonged, eloquent chorus. For those who want Langston Hughes's own explanation of what he is driving at, he has supplied at the end of the book some liner notes for squares. (Front flap from jacket.) Condition: Inscribed on the front end paper. Points lightly rubbed. Some rubbing to jacket edges, spine ends with small chips and small closed tears else a very good copy with like jacket. Frontis and 24 illustrations in mezzotint, with supplementary plate laid in. Fine in lightly worn chemise and velvet covered slipcase. The book is itself inscribed and signed by the artist opposite the half-title. Strachan singles this work out for distinction in his discussion of "la manière noire," noting that Avati exploits the "medium superbly. In these hors- and in- text mezzotints the eye caresses culinary objects and items of food from egg-cups to peeled apples, pomegranates to pepper-mills. Gone With the Wind.

      c. 1961 - Sheet size: 177 × 182 mm. Stamped below the image for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Pen and ink on wove paper. A man chases his hat and newspaper down the pavement amid the blown leaves and litter of a very windy day. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

HUGNET Georges,Surréaliste. (illustrateur). These surreal photomontages show Hugnet's sense of humor and references to sexuality. Peregrinations de Georges Hugnet.Complete with the errata sheet) .de toute rareté .en bon état malgré les petits défauts signalés (very good condition in spite of the smalls defects indicated). .
