        The Arm of Flesh

NY: Harper. (1961). His second book, set at an American-occupied German air force base in the aftermath of World War II, and featuring a young fighter pilot as its protagonist. Salter was unhappy with this book -- he called it "derivative Faulkner" and "largely a failure" -- and indeed it is not one of his better known books. In a rare instance of an author having a second chance, Salter rewrote the book forty years later and it was published in 2001 as Cassada, the protagonist's surname. The story events were largely the same but the narrative point of view was dramatically different. The Arm of Flesh has always been one of Salter's hardest books to find in the first edition. This copy is signed by the author in the month after publication: "James Salter - a friend - March 1961." Modest foxing to the edges of the text block and the hinges; near fine in a very good, mildly foxed dust jacket with shallow edge wear. An uncommon title, and scarce signed, especially with a contemporary date. First Edition. Hardcover.

        Franny and Zooey

Boston: Little, Brown and Company. (1961). First. Uncorrected galleys. String-tied in unprinted gray wrappers with applied title label. Printed rectos only. Slight crease on the front wrap, modest age-toning, else near fine, with the title handwritten on the spine as "Franny and Zooy" [sic]. Laid in are a press release, a publicity statement to booksellers, and a seasonal pamphlet reviewing the book. The press release, on Little, Brown stationery, is most interesting as it details an August publication date (the book was eventually published in September) and also announces that the book would contain an introduction by Salinger (the little additional text that he reluctantly provided was used on the jacket flaps and there is no introduction within the book itself). Additionally, these galleys lack the dedication page added to the published book. By the late 1950s Salinger had become so disillusioned with the marketing practices of publishers that he broke all ties with his English publisher after they allowed Nine Stories to be published with a garish cover. With Little, Brown he stipulated that there would be no advance publicity for the book, that it would have simple and understated art design, and that Salinger himself would provide the jacket text. Rare -- we know of only a handful of other copies. .

Between Heaven and Hell: A Symposium

Emil White, Big Sur CA 1961 - First edition, deluxe clothbound issue. Small square quarto. Boards a bit bowed, as seems usual with this title, and some age-toning to the edges of the boards, else a near fine copy without dustwrapper as issued. Inscribed by Miller to Sydney Omarr: "To Sydney, 'Who's always right!' Henry 11/9/64." Omarr was the "astrologer to the stars" and published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers; his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. He started out during the Second World War at the age of 17 when his predictions of horse races, boxing matches, and other sporting events were broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. Omarr and Miller became close friends, sharing the same tastes. Omarr liked to surround himself with beautiful women and was the personal adviser to Jayne Mansfield, Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, and Mae West, among others. Omarr wrote a book on Miller, *Henry Miller: His World of Urania*, and Miller wrote the introduction to *Sydney Omarr's Astrological Guide to 1973* and the liner notes to the record album *Presenting Sydney Omarr*.         [Photograph Album]: Wheelus Air Base, Libya and Istanbul, Turkey (1961)

[Tripoli; Istanbul]. (1961). Photo album. Oblong quarto. Approximately 14" x 10". Full cloth boards with a copper plate replica of the Selimiye Mosque (Edirne, Turkey) in relief on the front cover. Very good. Contains 86 black and white photographs neatly held in place on thick paper leaves with corner mounts, interleaved with embossed tissue guards. Laid-in at the rear are five 12" x 8" pencil sketches, three travel documents, and two additional photographs. The album was put together in 1961 by Charles Simpkins of the 848th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. It is divided into one section with 36 photographs (measuring 4.5" x 3.5") of the Wheelus U.S. Air Force Base in Libya (now Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport), and a second section with 50 photographs (measuring 5" x 3.5") of various street scenes taken in Istanbul, Turkey. Laid-in is Simpkins's Signed travel voucher from 1961.The Libyan set of 36 prints are identified with manuscript captions written in white ink on the paper sheet directly underneath each print. This historic base, known as the "Hell Hole" for its scorching heat, was built by the Italians in 1923 and was used by the Germans during the North African Campaign. Captured by the British in 1943, it was taken over by the Americans in 1945 and became home to 4,500 Americans at the height of the Cold War. The photographs document the base when it was being used for a covert airlift campaign during the Congo Crisis of the early 1960s. They include shots of USAF 124s and other planes on the flight line during the Airlift, and various street scenes taken throughout the base: Arab laborers, the Mirage restaurant, the NCO club, a Jewish Chapel, and much more. Also included are shots of Americans and Libyans at leisure on the beach. The second set of 50 prints is a fascinating series of informal street scenes taken in Istanbul while Simpkins was most likely on vacation in September 1961. As none are identified, one can easily get lost among these shots of Turkish vendors, peddlers, musicians, and horse drawn carts, as they make their way through street markets and carnivals, with the occasional view of a mosque's minarets in the background. Various candid portraits include children at play, boys playing foosball, and all manner of outdoor vendors selling their wares. The five laid in pencil sketches are reasonably accomplished drawings of a B-718 USAF jet in flight, a Brayer tank truck, a Mercedes 300 SL, an old Roadster, and a World War I British fighter plane. .

Karakoram: The Ascent of Gasherbrum IV

      - 1961 Viking, NY, 1st edition, 8vo, pp.320, 58 color & 50 bw photos, 20 maps/drawings, appendices, map endpapers, tan cloth; signed Walter Bonatti & Riccardo Cassin, dust jacket w/ several edge tears, very good, cloth fine. Account of the 1958 Italian first ascent of Gasherbrum IV (K3), with excellent photos throughout. GIV, while barely under the 8000m mark at 7925m, is more difficult than some higher peaks and has seen few ascents. One of my favorites.         Floating Bear Partial Run 3-23, 25-38 [with] Related Ephemera

New York / San Francisco: The Floating Bear / Poet's Press. 1961-1971. Magazine. Quartos. Loose mimeograph sheets top- or side-stapled and printed on both sides. Most issued folded for mailing with post office cancel, stamp and mailing label, along with some toning (as usual), scattered edgewear, and four tiny holes along the spine of the issues 3-30, overall very good. An influential mimeograph published by LeRoi Jones [Amiri Baraka] and Diane di Prima featuring some of the most important poets of the 20th Century. Unlike other magazines, this so-called "newsletter" was distributed via a closed mailing list that included many noted poets, journalists, critics, publishers, and artists. For this reason, most copies were hand addressed or affixed with a mailing label and stamp, and folded for mailing. This near-complete run lacks only the first two issues and the rare issue 24. It contains a virtual who's who of 1960s poetry that mixed contributors from the San Francisco and New York scenes along with Warhol's Factory regulars (such as Billy Name, who co-edited two issues), as well as numerous experimental and avant-garde writers including Allen Ginsberg, Charles Olson, William S. Burroughs, Frank O'Hara, Ed Dorn, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, John Weiners, John Ashbery, and many, many others. Also included is an original Floating Bear mailing envelope and two scarce promotional broadsheets sent to subscribers between issues 36 and 37. One is for new Poet's Press books and another titled, "Attention, Floating Bear Fans and Addicts," laments the magazine's dire financial situation and its impending end if funding is not found; the following issue was the last of the run. An influential close-circulation magazine that is now considered one of the finest of the Mimeograph Revolution. .

      - This Mercury VII astronaut, the third astronaut in space (1961), was killed in a flash fire during the simulation of the Apollo I launching. IPS (newspaper), 4 3/4" X 7¼", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1961]. Very good. Would be fine but for single 1" tape stain at right edge, not terribly noticeable and not touching the holograph; neither age toning nor brittleness evident. Candid newspaper photograph, a closeup showing Grissom, still in space suit, speaking with President Kennedy on the phone from aboard the aircraft Carrier "Randolph" just after being plucked from the ocean. At lower right corner, in bright blue fountain pen, Grissom boldly inscribes it "Best wishes to Donald Burnell / Virgil I. Grissom." Even in this newsprint form, quite handsome and quite scarce. Spotting to side edge of page block, light fading to topstain and sunning to spine. Soiling to top edge of boards. Overall, a nice copy.
