        Catch-22 A Novel

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1961. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in white, top edge stained red. With the dust jacket. Small scuff to one corner at the foot of the spine, contents very lightly toned, an excellent copy in the nicked, tanned and slightly marked dust jacket. First edition, first printing. A fine and early presentation copy with Heller unusually fulsome inscription to the front free endpaper, "To Everett Hoffman - With all good wishes from a copywriter at McCall's to a copywriter at Cunningham & Walsh, and with the sincere hope that this book will give you some pleasure. Joe Heller November 24, 1961 New York". As the inscription makes plain the recipient worked for an advertising agency - in theory therefore worked for a competitor of Heller's own employers, McCall's. The date of this inscription is within 6 weeks of publication and one the earliest we have handled. Heller would seem to have focussed his presentation of the first copies of this masterpiece on colleagues at McCall's and to fellow members of his erstwhile vocation. Towards the end of the book three passages have are scored in ink in the margin possibly by Heller.

        The Moviegoer

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1961. First. First edition. Fine in a lightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper with very light edgewear. Inscribed by the author to publisher and bibliographer Stuart Wright: "for Stuart with my thanks for what he did with a magazine article. Walker. Covington February 6, 1980." Wright was the publisher of the Palaemon Press, which published fine press editions of most of the best Southern authors of the time. Presumably Percy is referring to the fine press edition of Bourbon which Wright published as a private edition in 1979, and later republished in another edition in 1981. Estimates of the size of the printing of The Moviegoer vary, with strong cases for both 1500, and 3000. The Moviegoer was awarded the National Book Award over both Catch-22 and Franny and Zoey. The author's exceptionally scarce first book and a highspot of modern Southern literature, inscribed copies have become very uncommon, and are seldom found with notable associations. .

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 12th Impression Near Fine in Dustjacket

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1961. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A beautiful copy of an early printing of The Hobbit. The 1961, 12th overall printing, or the 8th printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Near Fine copy in like condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. This copy is one of the few early Houghton Mifflin copies with the full printing history stated on the verso of the title page. Stated 12th impression on front flap, not priced or clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain, this dustjacket is clean & bright with almost no rubbing and no loss along the edges, the spine or flap fold areas. The book is clean and bright, slightly dusty top edge, with the light green colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows no shelf wear, soiling, or bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners names or writing in the book. The flaps show a line of dust along the top, the only minor fault I can locate. The jacket shows no soiling in the white sections, only the spine shows the lightest of tanning to the white portions. A beautiful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in this Near Fine condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.
