Superb rare signature in ink of the famed Sioux Medicine Man, Sitting Bull

n.p., n.d. "Rare Signature, ?Sitting Bull?, in ink on a 5? x 2.75? sheet tipped to a card of the same size. In exceptionally fine condition. Over 50 years ago, autograph pioneer Charles Hamilton wrote in his ?Collecting Autographs and Manuscripts? (Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1961), ?Of all American Indians, the most celebrated is the great Sioux medicine man, Sitting Bull, who spent most of his life defending the hunting grounds of his people against the advancing whites. Sitting Bull?s early signature was a pictograph of a buffalo bull, seated on its haunches. Later, in Canada, after the Custer battle, he learned to write his name in the white man?s way. Years later, he joined Buffalo Bill?s Wild West Show, where he signed autographs in payment of a small fee. His signature, which he generally wrote in pencil without understanding the significance of the individual letters, was once rather plentiful. It is now very rare and you may have to wait years to obtain an example.?"

        DOCUMENT - Signed

1961 - Canceled check from Virgil Gus Grissom's personal checking account. It is dated 25 Feb 1961 and is made out to Capital Airlines for the amount of $53.79. This check was written and signed by by Grissom less than five months before his historic July 21, 1961 Project Mercury flight. Check is written in his hand , signed in black ink and is fine condition. Virgil I. Grissom, in full Virgil Ivan Grissom, by name Gus Grissom (born April 3, 1926, Mitchell, Ind., U.S.¿died Jan. 27, 1967, Cape Kennedy, Fla.), second U.S. astronaut to travel in space and the command pilot of the ill-fated Apollo 1 crew. He and his fellow astronauts Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee were killed, becoming the first casualties of the U.S. space program, when a flash fire swept their space capsule during a simulation of the scheduled Feb. 21, 1967, launching of Apollo 1. Commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, Grissom flew 100 missions in the Korean War, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with cluster. He was a test pilot and flying instructor until 1959, when he was selected as one of the original seven astronauts for Project Mercury. On July 21, 1961, with a 15-minute suborbital journey aboard the space capsule Liberty Bell 7, Grissom became the third man to enter space. Upon splashdown, the explosive bolts of the capsule¿s hatch unexpectedly opened, and Grissom immediately had to leave Liberty Bell 7, which sank in more than 4,500 metres (15,000 feet) of water. On March 23, 1965, Grissom became the first man to return to space as he (as command pilot) and Lieutenant Commander John W. Young made three orbits in the first manned Gemini flight, Gemini 3. During that flight Grissom demonstrated that a space capsule could be maneuvered manually. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Paintings from Prison

1961.. Two beautiful Chinese pen and ink and watercolour paintings on silk by Clarence Lee. Approximately 16.5 x 23.5cm and 16.8 x 22.8cm. These two paintings bear the chop of Clarence Lee - ??? (Lee Tse Ko or in Cantonese Lee Chi Kuk) from Hefei, Anhui Province. He was the son of K. C. Lee of the HSBC Bank in Shanghai. These two paintings were loosely inserted in an envelope on which it was noted that Clarence Lee had painted them on Christmas Day while in prison. As materials for painting were very difficult to obtain Clarence Lee painted on silk which he had torn off the back of old Chinese books. Clarence Lee painted these two paintings was in prison. He had run foul of the Communist Party as he and his brother who was also held refused to fit in with the new austere life required of people in China following 1949. The brothers continued to party and spend money and lead a life that was the anti-thesis of the model Chinese citizen in the 1950s. These paintings were from the collection of William Stewart, an official for many years in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, where the Lee Brothers father also worked. William Stewart wrote: "I have kept the original [paintings] for many years - given to me by his wife - who is no longer his wife now I think. When I left Shanghai in 1966 Clarence I understand was still in some sort of custody or under surveillance - and maybe still is (1978). His brother was released and I met him again in Shanghai, but after that he was arrested again in Hangchow for some minor misdemeanour, maybe is still in custody. Both very pleasant chaps and in any non c. [Communist] country might be going about their normal jobs and living as they were accustomed to in pre liberation days - ie before 1949. Such is life for some." Clarence Lee's chop appears on other paintings which suggests that he was a collector of art as well as an artist. One of these paintings is dated 1961 (???) possibly, the characters being difficult to make out, on Christmas Day (???) of that year. .

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition. Octavo, original black boards titles to the spine in gilt. Fine in a fine dust jacket with just a touch of shelfwear to the crown of the spine. Thunderball represented a new departure [for the Bond series], with the introduction of SPECTRE and of Ernst Blofeld, a commanding villain who was to reappear. This gave a measure of continuity to the later Bond novels… Thunderball worked well as an adventure story… the theme of the theft of atom bombs seemed pertinent and modern" (Black, 49, 55). "A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read" (New York Times). It was adapted twice to the screen: under the present title in 1965 and as Never Say Never Again in 1983—each time starring Sean Connery.

        The Unwritten Alliance

London: Cassell & Company Ltd., 1961. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is an exceptional copy of the fifth and final volume of Churchill's five postwar speech volumes. The Unwritten Alliance includes 70 speeches delivered by Churchill between 30 January 1953 and 31 October 1959. These speeches span the end of Churchill's second and final term as Prime Minister (1951-1955) and the twilight of his long life and public career. The bulk of the speeches - 43 of 70 and 250 of 332 pages - take place during Churchill's premiership. The Unwritten Alliance takes its name specifically from Churchill's 8 June 1954 speech and more generally from the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States, which had endured postwar disagreements. Randolph wrote in his introduction to the volume that the title was "justified by the number of speeches which dwell on the paramount necessity of Anglo-American friendship." There was no U.S. edition for this volume and the British first edition, only printing, was just 5,000 copies. Moreover, dust jackets for The Unwritten Alliance were notoriously poorly printed, and consequently are almost always rubbed or streaked, with orange showing through the black background. Here is an exceptional copy for collectors - fine in a fine dust jacket. The cloth binding is nearly perfect, square, tight, and immaculately clean with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. We note only trivial shelf-soiling to part of one bottom edge. The contents remain bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks. The otherwise clean page edges show only mild age-toning. The dust jacket is crisp and perfectly complete with only the slightest hint of wear to a few extremities. Even the orange streaking inherent to this edition is virtually absent, with only a trivial bit of orange showing at a few points on the hinges and front flap fold. The white rear face remains notably clean. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic Reference: Cohen A273, Woods/ICS A142, Langworth p.338.
