Four photo albums of events in India, owned by Thomas W. Simons, American Counsul General in Madras

[Circa 1957-1961]. Four photo albums of events in India that contain more than 100 professionally taken images, owned by Thomas W. Simons, American Counsul General in Madras. Three oblong octavos; one oblong quarto. All appear to be presentations to Simons, who appears to be the featured guest or speaker. These were presented by Caltex Oil Company at the Inauguration of the Caltex Oil Refinery at Visakhapatnam (1957); the Lions Club of Kottayam; at Simons' Inaugural Address of the General Council at Anmnamalai University (1961); and the fourth unidentified. Most seem to be professional photos and are artistically mounted. 107 pictures total (including seven loose), perhaps five or six lacking, whether these are the loose ones or not is unclear. Some are captioned. Images include Simons speaking at banquets with local dignitaries, many sari-clad dancing girls, pictures of Simons in the streets, etc.Curiously we could find relatively little about Simons, although his son Thomas W. Simons, Jr. seems to have made a name for himself as ambassador to Pakistan.

[Paris]: Les Francs-Bibliophiles, 1961.. 109,[8]pp. Large octavo (24.5 x 16cm). Loose gatherings laid into printed wrappers. Frontis and 24 illustrations in mezzotint, with supplementary plate laid in. Fine in lightly worn chemise and velvet covered slipcase. First edition in this format, illustrated with original mezzotints by Mario Avati. One of 175 numbered copies on Vélin de Rives, printed by Fequet and Baudier, with the mezzotints printed by Atelier Rigal. Laid into this copy is an additional bifolium, being a menu associated with the meeting of the Société des Francs-Bibliophiles on 26 October 1961, illustrated with another mezzotint, numbered 'xi/xx' and signed by Avati in the margin. The book is itself inscribed and signed by the artist opposite the half-title. Strachan singles this work out for distinction in his discussion of "la manière noire," noting that Avati exploits the "medium superbly...In these hors- and in- text mezzotints the eye caresses culinary objects and items of food from egg-cups to peeled apples, pomegranates to pepper-mills. He treats homely, everyday things with the same affection and skill as French artists have done from the Le Nain brothers in the Braque in our own century." MONOD 1955. ROSENWALD COLLECTION 2228.         Between Heaven and Hell: A Symposium

Big Sur CA: Emil White. 1961. First. First edition, deluxe clothbound issue. Small square quarto. Boards a bit bowed, as seems usual with this title, and some age-toning to the edges of the boards, else a near fine copy without dustwrapper as issued. Inscribed by Miller to Sydney Omarr: "To Sydney, 'Who's always right!' Henry 11/9/64." Omarr was the "astrologer to the stars" and published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers; his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. He started out during the Second World War at the age of 17 when his predictions of horse races, boxing matches, and other sporting events were broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. Omarr and Miller became close friends, sharing the same tastes. Omarr liked to surround himself with beautiful women and was the personal adviser to Jayne Mansfield, Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, and Mae West, among others. Omarr wrote a book on Miller, Henry Miller: His World of Urania, and Miller wrote the introduction to Sydney Omarr's Astrological Guide to 1973 and the liner notes to the record album Presenting Sydney Omarr. ADDITIONALLY - laid in is a card from Mr. Heller with the following rather amusing hand written message on his personalized notepaper: "Dear Mr. Merry: I've signed it on the page most book collectors prefer. Take good care of it. People tell me first editions are worth more than $800 today, and $200 more with a good dust jacket. The ink has been flowing more and better than ever since I got the use of my hands back. J. H."
