        The Moviegoer

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1961. First. First edition. Fine in a lightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper with very light edgewear. Inscribed by the author to publisher and bibliographer Stuart Wright: "for Stuart with my thanks for what he did with a magazine article. Walker. Covington February 6, 1980." Wright was the publisher of the Palaemon Press, which published fine press editions of most of the best Southern authors of the time. Presumably Percy is referring to the fine press edition of Bourbon which Wright published as a private edition in 1979, and later republished in another edition in 1981. Estimates of the size of the printing of The Moviegoer vary, with strong cases for both 1500, and 3000. The Moviegoer was awarded the National Book Award over both Catch-22 and Franny and Zoey. The author's exceptionally scarce first book and a highspot of modern Southern literature, inscribed copies have become very uncommon, and are seldom found with notable associations. .

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1961. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A beautiful copy of an early printing of The Hobbit. The 1961, 12th overall printing, or the 8th printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Near Fine copy in like condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. This copy is one of the few early Houghton Mifflin copies with the full printing history stated on the verso of the title page. Stated 12th impression on front flap, not priced or clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain, this dustjacket is clean & bright with almost no rubbing and no loss along the edges, the spine or flap fold areas. The book is clean and bright, slightly dusty top edge, with the light green colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows no shelf wear, soiling, or bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners names or writing in the book. The flaps show a line of dust along the top, the only minor fault I can locate. The jacket shows no soiling in the white sections, only the spine shows the lightest of tanning to the white portions. A beautiful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in this Near Fine condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.

        Young Adam

Heinemann, London 1961 - 8vo, pp. 162. Original brown boards, lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge a little dusty, light spotting to leading and lower edge, otherwise a near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, rear panel a little marked, spine ends worn with slight loss to head (not affecting text), and three small closed tears to top edge. First UK edition, INSCRIBED BY TROCCHI'S COUSIN ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: 'With the compliments of the author's cousin. The Demon driver!!'. Scottish novelist Alexander Trocchi [1925-1984] moved to Paris in the early 1950s, where he edited the literary magazine Merlin. Merlin flew the Existentialist flag, and numbered Sartre, Genet and Camus among its contributors. The magazine proved better at making reputations than money, however, and Trocchi was one of a group of impecunious writers recruited by Maurice Girodias to write pornography for the Olympia Press, an English-language, Paris-based imprint catering for the wide variety of sexual tastes to be found among the city's Anglophone residents and visitors. But Olympia also had a more respectable face -- it published the first edition of Lolita, as well as work by Beckett, Burroughs and J.P. Donleavy -- and Trocchi was keen to join its roster of writers. He supplied Girodias with two smutty potboilers written absolutely to the Olympia recipe, Helen and Desire and The Carnal Days Of Helen Seferis (both published under the 'Frances Lengel' pseudonym), and then submitted Young Adam, an altogether more literary work. Girodias didn't like it for precisely that reason. The novel, preoccupied with sex (good) and death (less good), unfolds in an allusive, elusive writerly style which Girodias knew would be a turn-off for Frances Lengel fans. He sent Trocchi away to rewrite Young Adam in the Olympia house style. Astonishingly Trocchi did, and the true first edition of Young Adam [Atlantic Library, 1954] is a sexed-up, dumbed-down version of the book which would go on to make Trocchi's name. This UK edition was the first to publish the text as it was originally written.

        Spencer's Mountain

New York: The Dial Press. 1961. First. First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper with the slightest of rubbing. Signed by the author. Full-page Harper Lee blurb on the rear panel. Basis for the 1963 film featuring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. It was also the final film for veteran actor/director Donald Crisp, who suffers an unexpectedly gruesome death as Grandpa Spencer. Hamner was not pleased that the setting of the film was changed from his native Virginia to Wyoming, but had his way a decade later when the book was adapted into the television series The Waltons. The folksy and earnest program, narrated by Hamner, was a surprise ratings hit and remained a mainstay of quality television throughout the decade. A beautiful copy, and very uncommon signed. .
