        Paintings from Prison

1961.. Two beautiful Chinese pen and ink and watercolour paintings on silk by Clarence Lee. Approximately 16.5 x 23.5cm and 16.8 x 22.8cm. These two paintings bear the chop of Clarence Lee - ??? (Lee Tse Ko or in Cantonese Lee Chi Kuk) from Hefei, Anhui Province. He was the son of K. C. Lee of the HSBC Bank in Shanghai. These two paintings were loosely inserted in an envelope on which it was noted that Clarence Lee had painted them on Christmas Day while in prison. As materials for painting were very difficult to obtain Clarence Lee painted on silk which he had torn off the back of old Chinese books. Clarence Lee painted these two paintings was in prison. He had run foul of the Communist Party as he and his brother who was also held refused to fit in with the new austere life required of people in China following 1949. The brothers continued to party and spend money and lead a life that was the anti-thesis of the model Chinese citizen in the 1950s. These paintings were from the collection of William Stewart, an official for many years in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, where the Lee Brothers father also worked. William Stewart wrote: "I have kept the original [paintings] for many years - given to me by his wife - who is no longer his wife now I think. When I left Shanghai in 1966 Clarence I understand was still in some sort of custody or under surveillance - and maybe still is (1978). His brother was released and I met him again in Shanghai, but after that he was arrested again in Hangchow for some minor misdemeanour, maybe is still in custody. Both very pleasant chaps and in any non c. [Communist] country might be going about their normal jobs and living as they were accustomed to in pre liberation days - ie before 1949. Such is life for some." Clarence Lee's chop appears on other paintings which suggests that he was a collector of art as well as an artist. One of these paintings is dated 1961 (???) possibly, the characters being difficult to make out, on Christmas Day (???) of that year. .

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition. Octavo, original black boards titles to the spine in gilt. Fine in a fine dust jacket with just a touch of shelfwear to the crown of the spine. Thunderball represented a new departure [for the Bond series], with the introduction of SPECTRE and of Ernst Blofeld, a commanding villain who was to reappear. This gave a measure of continuity to the later Bond novels… Thunderball worked well as an adventure story… the theme of the theft of atom bombs seemed pertinent and modern" (Black, 49, 55). "A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read" (New York Times). It was adapted twice to the screen: under the present title in 1965 and as Never Say Never Again in 1983—each time starring Sean Connery.

        The Unwritten Alliance

London: Cassell & Company Ltd., 1961. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is an exceptional copy of the fifth and final volume of Churchill's five postwar speech volumes. The Unwritten Alliance includes 70 speeches delivered by Churchill between 30 January 1953 and 31 October 1959. These speeches span the end of Churchill's second and final term as Prime Minister (1951-1955) and the twilight of his long life and public career. The bulk of the speeches - 43 of 70 and 250 of 332 pages - take place during Churchill's premiership. The Unwritten Alliance takes its name specifically from Churchill's 8 June 1954 speech and more generally from the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States, which had endured postwar disagreements. Randolph wrote in his introduction to the volume that the title was "justified by the number of speeches which dwell on the paramount necessity of Anglo-American friendship." There was no U.S. edition for this volume and the British first edition, only printing, was just 5,000 copies. Moreover, dust jackets for The Unwritten Alliance were notoriously poorly printed, and consequently are almost always rubbed or streaked, with orange showing through the black background. Here is an exceptional copy for collectors - fine in a fine dust jacket. The cloth binding is nearly perfect, square, tight, and immaculately clean with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. We note only trivial shelf-soiling to part of one bottom edge. The contents remain bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks. The otherwise clean page edges show only mild age-toning. The dust jacket is crisp and perfectly complete with only the slightest hint of wear to a few extremities. Even the orange streaking inherent to this edition is virtually absent, with only a trivial bit of orange showing at a few points on the hinges and front flap fold. The white rear face remains notably clean. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic Reference: Cohen A273, Woods/ICS A142, Langworth p.338.

Framed Autographed Letter Signed on personal letterhead

1961. unbound. 1 page, 10.25 x 7.25 inches, no place, no date, circa 1961. This rare and important letter, written to constitutionalist attorney Howard N. Meyer, pertains to Hollywood's interest in turning "A Raisin in the Sun" into a motion picture, in full: "This is so wonderful, so moving and so enlightening; surely something good must come of it! For my part, I keep seeing such a great film from the book. I will be in touch with you about the offer. Congratulations on your writing." This letter is most definitely referring to the 1961 motion picture starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee. Boldly signed with her trademark "initial" signature at the conclusion. Together with a 6.5 x 5.5-inch black-and-white photo in a decorative gold frame measuring 14.5 x 17.25 inches with a brick-colored matte. Fine condition. In 1959 Hansberry became the first African-American to have a play performed on Broadway and "A Raisin In The Sun" was one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. The play was based on the true story of her parents' personal fight against racial discrimination while living in a white section of Chicago. She died at the age of 34 after suffering for several years from cancer, thus accounting for the rarity of this item.

The Prime Minister would like my advice on how to deal with attacks on the party from within.

1961 1961 - Sheet size: 190 × 138 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 8 February 1961. Pen and blank ink on wove paper. Hugh Gaitskill's leadership of the Labour party in opposition had been constantly undermined by bitter internecine disputes. By February 1961 the Conservative prime minister Harold Macmillan was experiencing similar problems. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Non, je ne regrette rien - three track 45 rpm EP, inscribed

Paris: Columbia,, 1961. In original sleeve with photographic image of Piaf by J.-P. Leloir. Light surface scuff to the disc, sleeve a little rubbed, very good. Inscribed on the back of the sleeve to French actress and singer Martine Havet; "Pour Martine cordialement Edith Piaf". Probably Piaf's defining performance, appropriately dedicated by her at the time to the 1er Régiment Étranger de Parachutistes in their inevitably ill-fated support for Algiers Putsch. Also inscribed by Michel Rivgauche, whose "Les Mots d'Amour" Piaf performs on the B side.
