Typed letter signed in full to Mr. D'Arms of the Ford Foundation

2 pp. Quarto. Dated September 11, 1961. A long and important letter mentioning a number of Carter's works including the Double Concerto, Second String Quartet, and Piano Concerto, commissioned by the noted Cuban- born American pianist and long-time teacher at both the Mannes School of Music and Juilliard, Jacob Lateiner (1928-2010). Stamped "Received Sep 12 1961 Humanities & Arts Program." Carter explains that he has been busy rehearsing his Double Concerto. Work on the Piano Concerto has been slow because he had to complete his Second String Quartet and Double Concerto: "I have only been able to spend about 1000 hours on the Ford [Piano] Concerto and have about 3,000 hours or so more to spend... before it is finished." He goes on to discuss performances and performers, the inadvisability of the premiere of the Piano Concerto taking place in Denver, his concerns that it will likely be a failure because of the incompetency of the local performers, his worries that Lateiner will have difficulty securing engagements, etc. Carter insists that the work be first performed by a major orchestra either in the U.S. or in Europe. Creased at folds; stapled at upper left corner; some marks in red crayon and pencil, possibly in Carter's hand; a number of words crossed out; small stamp to lower right corner of first page and lower left corner of second page; receipt stamp to verso of first page. . The tone of the letter suggests that Carter was quite upset over the Ford Foundation's plans for the launch of his new work. His wishes were fulfilled, however, as the concerto was eventually premiered by Lateiner with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Eric Leinsdorf on January 6, 1967. The work is dedicated to Igor Stravinsky "on his 85th birthday with great admiration and friendship... Reviewing the first performance, Michael Steinberg wrote that 'Carter's Concerto established the most dramatic confrontation of solo and orchestra since Beethoven.' Carter set out to discover a new dramatic meaning for the concerto form... The Concerto is Carter's most passionate and tragic composition." Schiff p. 254.

        An autobiography

Ziff-Davis, New York, 1961, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: Poor, First EditionWEEGEE [Arthur Fellig.] An Autobiography, New York: Ziff-Davis, 1964. Octavo, first edition, pp. 159, black cloth boards with gilt-stamped lettering on spine, gilt-stamped Weegee the Famous photo credits on upper panel, numerous halftone photo plates, inscribed on the free front endpaper by Weegee. Weegee was probably the best tabloid news photographer ever, scooping the competition by sleeping in his street clothes with police and fire radios in the bedroom and a makeshift darkroom and office in his car trunk. "Weegee's direct-frontal, synchronized flash assault produced unrefined and titillating images that broke through society's veneer, presenting a raw, spontaneous, pessimistic, and primeval view of humanity. ... Removed from its journalistic bonds, Weegee's work can transcend its news time and take on the distressingly symbolic form of a morality tale by a fabulist whose aggressiveness and antagonism towards his subjects gives his caricatures piercing believablity" says Robert Hirsch in "Seizing the Light," pp. 329-330. Condition of this book: Boards very good with a slight bowing and a few small marks. Dust jacket poor with invisible tape repairs and drinking glass stains (no doubt Weegee would approve). Leaves clean and tight, images fine. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.       Houghton Mifflin and Co.,, Boston: 1961 - First edition. The author's only book. An advance copy INSCRIBED by Brammer, "For Wm. Beckman -- Friend of famous Arthurs / Pen Pay of Genius Poets / Patron of the Pataphysician. From his boon companion Wm. (B. L.) Brammer 3/21/63 (4 a. m.)." One of the best political novels we've read. Brammer worked for LBJ and became a heavy user of drugs which eventually led to his death. Set in an unnamed state identical to Texas, each novella has a different protagonist: a member of the state legislature; the state's junior senator; and the governor's speechwriter. The governor himself, Arthur Fenstemaker, a master politician (said to have been based on Brammer's mentor Lyndon Johnson) serves as the dominant figure throughout. The book also includes characters based on Ladybird, and LBJ's brother Sam Houston Johnson. The book, which earned the author a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award. has been widely acclaimed as one of the best American political novels ever written. Yellow printed wraps a bit soiled and a bit worn on edges but still very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Basis for the 1963 Vincente Minnelli film featuring Glenn Ford, Shirley Jones, Stella Stevens, Dina Merrill, and Jerry Van Dyke, with Ron Howard as Eddie.         Franny and Zooey

Boston: Little, Brown and Company,, 1961. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the original printed dust jacket. A very nice copy in the dust jacket. First edition, first printing. An exceptional presentation copy, inscribed by Salinger on the front free endpaper, "Mr Mel Manchester On Saturday, the Seventh of October Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-one at three o'clock in the afternoon First Christian church, Portland, Oregon is marrying one of the excellent people in this world, one of the good and true. Thinking of you, Mary Jane, Love to you. All happiness, Jerry Salinger Cornish, N.H. Sept. 30, 1961". The recipient was the actress and dancer Mary Jane Kersey. Born in Denver in 1921 Kersey first trained in classical ballet before turning to acting during the war. Her career stalled in 1960 when she returned to Oregon to care for her elderly father. In 1961 she married Mel Manchester and it was this occasion which Salinger marks in the unusually long and playful inscription in this copy. Accompanying the book is Kersey's small archive of correspondence relating to Salinger. It includes a typed letter and a 2 page autograph letter from Salinger. The 2 page autograph letter written from Winds, Vermont, 8 December 1953, responds warmly to a letter from Kersey in which she had reminisced about a day spent with Salinger in New York some years before. In unusually open and chatty tones Salinger suggests a date in New York at some point before Christmas and ends with a final recollection of their earlier meeting in the city. The typed letter some 2 years later thanks Kersey "remembering me" and ends, "At this moment I'm baby-sitting for my three-week old daughter. And a nice one she is." Included are several hand-written copies of Kersey's letters to Salinger.

Superb rare signature in ink of the famed Sioux Medicine Man, Sitting Bull

n.p., n.d. "Rare Signature, ?Sitting Bull?, in ink on a 5? x 2.75? sheet tipped to a card of the same size. In exceptionally fine condition. Over 50 years ago, autograph pioneer Charles Hamilton wrote in his ?Collecting Autographs and Manuscripts? (Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1961), ?Of all American Indians, the most celebrated is the great Sioux medicine man, Sitting Bull, who spent most of his life defending the hunting grounds of his people against the advancing whites. Sitting Bull?s early signature was a pictograph of a buffalo bull, seated on its haunches. Later, in Canada, after the Custer battle, he learned to write his name in the white man?s way. Years later, he joined Buffalo Bill?s Wild West Show, where he signed autographs in payment of a small fee. His signature, which he generally wrote in pencil without understanding the significance of the individual letters, was once rather plentiful. It is now very rare and you may have to wait years to obtain an example.?"

This check was written and signed by by Grissom less than five months before his historic July 21, 1961 Project Mercury flight. Check is written in his hand , signed in black ink and is fine condition. Virgil I. Grissom, in full Virgil Ivan Grissom, by name Gus Grissom (born April 3, 1926, Mitchell, Ind., U.S.¿died Jan. 27, 1967, Cape Kennedy, Fla.), second U.S. astronaut to travel in space and the command pilot of the ill-fated Apollo 1 crew. He and his fellow astronauts Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee were killed, becoming the first casualties of the U.S. space program, when a flash fire swept their space capsule during a simulation of the scheduled Feb. 21, 1967, launching of Apollo 1. Commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, Grissom flew 100 missions in the Korean War, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with cluster. He was a test pilot and flying instructor until 1959, when he was selected as one of the original seven astronauts for Project Mercury. On July 21, 1961, with a 15-minute suborbital journey aboard the space capsule Liberty Bell 7, Grissom became the third man to enter space. Upon splashdown, the explosive bolts of the capsule¿s hatch unexpectedly opened, and Grissom immediately had to leave Liberty Bell 7, which sank in more than 4,500 metres (15,000 feet) of water. On March 23, 1965, Grissom became the first man to return to space as he (as command pilot) and Lieutenant Commander John W. Young made three orbits in the first manned Gemini flight, Gemini 3. During that flight Grissom demonstrated that a space capsule could be maneuvered manually. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
