London: Jonathan Cape 1961 - First edition, first impression. Publisher's dark gray cloth with skeleton hand in blind to front cover, lettered in gilt; in the original unclipped pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, with an illustration to the front panel of a skeleton's hand holding a blackjack hand with a knife affixing the cards to the table, lettered in black. Book with former owner's inscription and a small minor stain to the top edge and front free endpaper, otherwise bright and clean interior, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of toning to the spine, a tiny nick and a few tiny tears to the spine head, light wear to corners, faint spotting to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a tight and handsome copy. Gilbert A9a (1.1). Thunderball is the first of Fleming's novels to involve the notorious villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of the secret spy organization SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion). In this novel, Bond is in the Bahamas at a health clinic when SPECTRE steals two atomic bombs. The British and American intelligence agencies team up to launch Operation Thunderball in an effort to recover the weapons. Published only a few years after the Cuban Missile Crisis, Fleming draws a parallel to pre-existing Cold War tensions to heighten the suspense of this novel. Thunderball culminates with a memorable underwater fight scene from which 007 only narrowly escapes. The Blofeld trilogy is continued in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1963) and You Only Live Twice (1964). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1961 - 8vo., original blue buckram , spine lettered on a grey backround within a gilt panel. With frontispiece and full page plate at the rear both by David Jones, and a map in the text. A fine copy. Second edition of this tour de force by the artist/poet, an innovative prose poem which stands as one of the handful of literary works of the First World War to which the term "great" may justifiably applied. Jones served in France and Flanders with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. This edition includes an Introduction by T. S. Eliot (Jones's advocate at Faber), and this is the deluxe issue, limited to seventy numbered copies (fifty for sale), specially bound and signed by Jones and Eliot. This copy No. 1. The author's first book and most celebrated work, which takes the form of an epic prose poem set in the first world war, based on the author's own experiences. It was ten years in the making and was eventually helped to publication by T.S. Eliot, who hailed the book as "a work of genius". It won the 1938 Hawthornden prize. Stephen Spender in a review for the NY Times said: "This work of a poet-painter has its every word chiselled out of experience, and it is probably the World War I monument most likely to survive."         Marc Chagall Gouaches: A Limited Edition in Facsimile

New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1961. Cloth. Very Good. Impressive portfolio of 10 lovely Marc Chagall gouaches in facsimile.         Keine Experimente

Eulenspiegel, Berlin 1961 - Alvermann's photographs made between 1956 and 1961 are juxtaposed against the first 9 articles of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany and in part acts as a critique of the consumerism and the attitudes that the free-market brought. This scarce book opens with a page spread of a crowd locked behind a gate reminiscent of a concentration camp. A reminder of a difficult history that many of the population wished to disappear -- something the new economic policies made easier. When the gates open into this new society we are faced with billboards offering the Ten Commandments and bottles of Coca-Cola. The faces of the workers on the following spread seem confused and uncertain. .Keine Experimente's construction and, again, Alvermann's use of design is most effective. Like with his book on Algeria, he creates a kind of photojournalist's Klein's New York utilizing slivers of photos and graphic pairings that are visually exciting creating new meanings from disparate images -- a kind of assemblage of history and commentary. Keine Experimente is a pocket-sized book with glossy illustrated hardcovers and is not much larger than a common novel. The printing is on rather cheap paper but the low-fi production is very seductive and adds a gritty edge to a supposed bright reality. (Jeff Ladd) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Extraordinary letter! Eisenhower writes about the failed Bay of Pigs invasion during the Kennedy presidency. Ike had allocated $13.1 million to the CIA just a year before - " I said that the American people were disturbed by the 'seeming indecision and uncertainty that characterized governmental action in Cuba' ? To top it all - I have a clipping of a Goldwater column that refers to the 'inept Eisenhower Administration in Cuba' affair - Who is he to be such a genius??"

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1961. 7" x 10.25". "Typed Letter Signed ""Ike"" with thirty-one word handwritten postscript incorporating ""Eisenhower"" signed ""DE,"" two full pages, 7"" x 10.25"", separate sheets. Gettysburg, PA, September 29, 1961. To Major General Wilton B. Persons, his White House Chief of Staff (1958-1961). On Ike's ""DDE"" gilt engraved stationery. Fine condition. In part, ""As you know, I thoroughly believe that when we face specific foreign problems or the government enunciates a specific policy involving our foreign activities, all of us owe it to ourselves as well as to the government to stand unanimously behind the President. On the other hand, I by no means believe that we should ignore our own right -- indeed, duty -- to look at past events with an impartial eye and try to keep the record straight.""In my Chicago speech I said that the American people were disturbed by the 'seeming indecision and uncertainty that characterized governmental action in Cuba.' I used the word 'seeming' because I was not there. However, the detailed account given by Charlie Murphy in a recent issue of Fortune magazine has all the earmarks of authenticity, and since the government itself did not choose to give a detailed account of the whole affair even though it has now passed into history, I think we must consider it about as good a record as we are going to get. Nevertheless Bryce [Harlow] tells me that the White House did not like my language and had been putting the story out to certain reporters that I had 'gone partisan in foreign affairs ...'Eisenhower adds a handwritten postscript: ""P.S. To top it all - I have a clipping of a Goldwater column that refers to the 'inept Eisenhower Administration in Cuba' affair- Who is he to be such a genius?? DE""The letter can be read in its entirety in the images above.A photocopy of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater's syndicated September 24, 1961, column is present. It includes this sentence: ""The inept handling of the Cuban situation by the Eisenhower administration and the tragic indecision of the Kennedy administration have encouraged our enemies to test our will once more in Berlin.""The failed Bay of Pigs invasionFrom the JFK Library: ""Before his inauguration, John F. Kennedy was briefed on a plan by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) developed during the Eisenhower administration to train Cuban exiles for an invasion of their homeland ... President Eisenhower approved the program in March 1960. The CIA set up training camps in Guatemala, and by November the operation had trained a small army for an assault landing and guerilla warfare ... Shortly after his inauguration, in February 1961, President Kennedy authorized the invasion plan ... On April 17, the Cuban-exile invasion force ... landed at beaches along the Bay of Pigs and immediately came under heavy fire ... Over the next 24 hours, Castro ordered roughly 20,000 troops to advance toward the beach, and the Cuban air force continued to control the skies ... at dawn on April 19?"six unmarked American fighter planes took off to help defend the brigade's B-26 aircraft flying ... They were shot down by the Cubans, and the invasion was crushed later that day ... ""ProvenanceMajor General Wilton Burton ""Jerry"" Persons (1896-1977) served as the White House Chief of Staff to President Dwight D. Eisenhower from October 7, 1958 until January 20, 1961 and was Eisenhower's representative in the transition of government between the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. He was a career United States Army officer who had entered the U.S. Army Coast Artillery in 1917 and advanced through the ranks to Major General in 1944.       443 pages. Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with white lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition.Catch-22 is a satirical novel by the American author Joseph Heller. He began writing it in 1953; the novel was first published in 1961. It is frequently cited as one of the greatest literary works of the twentieth century. It uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, describing events from the points of view of different characters. The separate story-lines are out of sequence so that the timeline develops along with the plot. The novel is set during World War II, from 1942 to 1944. It mainly follows the life of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th Squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea, west of Italy. The novel looks into the experiences of Yossarian and the other airmen in the camp, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home. The novel's title refers to a plot device that is repeatedly invoked in the story. Catch-22 starts as a set of paradoxical requirements whereby airmen mentally unfit to fly did not have to, but could not actually be excused. By the end of the novel it is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. The phrase "Catch-22" has since entered the English language, referring to a type of unsolvable logic puzzle sometimes called a double bind. According to the novel, people who were crazy were not obliged to fly missions; but anyone who applied to stop flying was showing a rational concern for their safety, and was sane. While sitting at home one morning in 1953, Heller thought of the lines, "It was love at first sight. The first time he saw the chaplain, [Yossarian] fell madly in love with him." Within the next day, he began to envision the story that could result from this beginning, and invented the characters, the plot, and the tone that the story would eventually take. Within a week, he had finished the first chapter and sent it to his agent. He did not do any more writing for the next year, as he planned the rest of the story. The initial chapter was published in 1955 as "Catch-18", in Issue 7 of New World Writing. Although he originally did not intend the story to be longer than a novelette, Heller was able to add enough substance to the plot that he felt it could become his first novel. When he was one-third done with the work, his agent, Candida Donadio, sent it to publishers. Heller was not particularly attached to the work, and decided that he would not finish it if publishers were not interested. The work was soon purchased by Simon and Schuster, who gave him US $750 and promised him an additional $750 when the full manuscript was delivered. Heller missed his deadline by four to five years, but, after eight years of thought, delivered the novel to his publisher. Just before publication, the novel's title was changed to Catch-22 to avoid confusion with Leon Uris' new novel, Mila 18. The novel was published in hardback in 1961 to mixed reviews, with theChicago Sun-Times calling it "the best American novel in years", while other critics derided it as "disorganized, unreadable, and crass". It sold only 30,000 copies in the United States hardback in its first year of publication. Reaction was very different in the UK, where, within one week of its publication, the novel was number one on the bestseller lists. In the years after its release in paperback in October 1962, however, Catch-22 caught the imaginations of many baby boomers, who identified with the novel's anti-war sentiments. The book went on to sell 10 million copies in the United States. The novel's title became a standard term in English and other languages for a dilemma with no easy way out. Now considered a classic, the book was listed at number 7 on Modern Library's list of the top 100 novels of the century.Condition:Some fading of cloth, a few small stains, slight stain/scratch to front panel, light rubbing to spine ends. Jacket chip to spine ends and top of rear panel, also a few minor chips and tears, light wear and soling else a very good copy in like jacket.
