Dedication, The Gift Outright, The Inaugural Address, Washington, D.C., January the Twentieth 1961, accompanied by an invitation from Secretary of the Interior Stewart Lee Udall and his wife for a 26 March 1962 dinner honoring Robert Frost, and the menu from the dinner Copy #96 of 500

New York: The Spiral Press, 1961. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This fine press limited edition was printed in March of 1961, commemorating Robert Frost's participation in the January 20, 1961 Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. This copy is noteworthy in several respects. Condition is exceptional, the slim, fragile volume still protected by its original glassine dust jacket. Moreover, laid in we found a printed invitation and menu from U.S. Secretary of the Interior Udall and his wife to a 26 March 1962 birthday dinner for Frost “on the occasion of his birthday and the publication of his new book of poetry”. It was Stewart Lee Udall (1920-2010) who recommended that President Kennedy ask Frost to read an original poem at Kennedy's inauguration. A noted conservationist and environmental protection advocate, Udall served three terms as an Arizona Congressman before serving as Secretary of the Interior from 1961-1969 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. The book measures 11.5 x 7.75 inches, bound in grey paper-covered boards with a presidential eagle seal on the front cover. The contents are printed black and red with gilt and gray illustrations on ivory laid paper with untrimmed fore and bottom edges. Contents include the poems “Dedication” and “The Gift Outright” as well as Kennedy's inaugural address. This copy is hand-numbered “96” of five hundred copies on the limitation page. The binding is beautifully clean, marred only by a few trivial bumps. The contents are bright and clean with transfer browning to the pastedowns from the binding glue. The glassine dust wrapper is complete, albeit toned with some creasing, spotting, and closed tears. The menu and invitation are in fine condition. On January 20th, 1961, iconic American poet Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration. Frost composed a new poem - “Dedication” - for the ceremony, but glare from the sun and snow famously prevented him from reading the sheet on which his poem was typed, so Frost instead recited “The Gift Outright” from memory. The new President, John F. Kennedy would say: “I've never taken the view the world of politics and the world of poetry are so far apart.” In the case of his relationship with Frost, this was more than just sentiment. In March of 1959, at a New York City press conference preceding a gala to celebrate his 85th birthday, Frost was asked about the alleged decline of New England and replied: “The next President of the United States will be from Boston. Does that sound as if New England is decaying?” Frost repeated the endorsement in the months to come, a boon to the junior Senator from Massachusetts. Kennedy wrote to Frost and quoted his poetry in his speeches. When Kennedy telegraphed Frost to ask him to speak at his Inauguration, Frost responded: “If you can bear at your age the honor of being made President of the United States, I ought to be able at my age to bear the honor of taking some part in your inauguration. I may not be equal to it but I can accept it for my cause – the arts, poetry, now for the first time taken into the affairs of statesmen.” Ironically, the quintessential poetic voice of New England was born in San Francisco and it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children – “the place to be poor and to write poems” – that catalyzed his recognition. Returning to America in 1915 after publication of his second book, Frost embarked on “the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever ‘subjects' he pleased at a congenial college… and ‘barding around,' his term for ‘saying' poems in a conversational performance.” (ANB) By 1924 he had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent his final decade and a half as “the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century” with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit, the capstone of which was reading at President Kennedy's inauguration.

        Rivista studi tradizionali

, - Rivista studi tradizionali. , , AA. VV. Pair of embossed silver book covers (34 x 25 x 3 cm); each cover with a large scrollwork cartouche surrounded by extensive vine and flower decorations and with medallion portraits in each of the four corners, the front showing the crucifixion flanked by Mary and St. John (with an "INRI" scroll above, flanked by a crescent moon and a sun, and a scull and crossbones below), with portraits of four saints, each with a blank scroll (above left bearded with a regal crown; above right clean-shaven with a round-topped mitre; below left and right bare-headed and bearded), the back showing the resurrection with an angel and two astonished guards, with po

      - Cf. J.W. Frederiks, Dutch silver, vol. 4 (1961), nos. 238-239 & plates 235-237 (vaguely similar silver bindings from 1732 & 1738); nothing similar in J.F. Hayward, Silver bindings from the J.R. Abbey collection. Beautiful, richly decorated early 18th-century Dutch silver binding. The large silver covers, together weighing about 750 grams, bear no silver marks. Although no spine is present, the clasps show that the binding was made for a book about 2 cm thick, suggesting 200 or 300 pages, so most likely made for a folio missal. The clasps are hinged to the back cover, each with a round hole that fastens to a round-headed pin on the fore-edge of the front cover. With a 1 cm crack on the fore-edge of the back cover, another slightly affecting the arm of one guard and a few tiny holes where the tips of the noses of some figures have worn, but still generally in good condition. A lovely and unusually large pair of embossed silver book covers. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Recipient of the Nobel Prize (1913) for literature, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was born in an affluent Bengali family. He was a versatile genius and developed an acute sensibility towards various art forms, literature, poetry, dance and music. Tagore’s journey as a painter began in his late sixties as an extension to his poetry. Though he had hardly any formal training in art, he developed a highly imaginative and spontaneous visual vocabulary, enhanced by a sound understanding of the visual practices of modern western art and primitivism. His first images emerged from revision marks on his manuscripts that he distorted into animal shapes - slightly crude renderings of fantastical animals. On his birth centenary of in 1961, the Indian government—at the personal initiative of its prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had known and revered Tagore in the 1930s commissioned a portfolio of collotype reproductions of some of Tagore’s more than 2,000 paintings and drawings. They were printed by the renowned Ganymed Press. So fine was the quality that when the collotype reproductions were exhibited at the Commonwealth Institute in London, some visitors took them for the original works. Tagore said his paintings did not contain “any interpretation of an idea or representation of fact”. This might be true for the animal images and the landscapes, but can hardly be said to be true for his studies of veiled women. The Ganymed Press were Collotype printers, in London between 1947 and 1963. The firm owed its origins to Ganymed Graphische Anstalt of Berlin, founded in the early years of the 20th century by Bruno Deja, a printer, and the art historian Julius Meier-Graefe. The Berlin works was re-established after wartime bombing with the help of the British publishing firm Lund Humphries and the New Statesman newspaper; Deja, in turn, advised the London firm set up by Lund Humphries and the New Statesman and provided trained craftsmen. The firm was run by Bernhard Baer (1905-83) and his wife Anne. Baer presented a set of these collotypes to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1961. A fine set with a couple of spots to the margins on one or two of the collotypes.

I don't wanna miss Mississippi - autograph manuscript score from the collection of Jack Teagarden.

New York: , 1961. Large oblong folio (440 × 180 mm), red ownership stamps of Jack Teagarden on front and rear covers, along with the ink-stamped title and additional small stamp "Arr. by Sid Feller", dated May 25, 1961 in pencil. 10-page manuscript in graphite and red pencil, scored for trumpet, clarinet, trombone, drums, piano and bass. Staples rusted and with some associated discolouration, folded at the centre, else very good. Autograph manuscript musical arrangement of the popular song by Seger Ellis in the hand of Sid Feller. Teagarden's wife, Addie, gave this copy to a friend, explaining that it was apparently was used by Teagarden for his 1961 recording of this song, which appeared on his Misery and the Blues LP of that year. The American musician, conductor and arranger Sid Feller worked with Teagarden in the 30s, and again after the Second World War, before becoming a record producer, arranger and conductor for first Capitol Records and then ABC, working with such artists as Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jackie Gleason, Nancy Wilson, Dean Martin, Edye Gorme and Paul Anka. In 1960, he began a long collaboration with Ray Charles following Charles' departure from Atlantic Records. Charles' style changed considerably with his move to ABC. To die-hard R & B fans, the shift to a more mainstream repertoire and the introduction of string and vocal choir arrangements was criticised, and Feller took much of the blame. Charles, however, not only made a conscious choice to broaden his approach but gave Feller much of the credit for making it possible. On the breakthrough album, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Charles said, "Sid researched the hell out of it and came up with 250 tunes. I picked the ones I liked, and of the ones I picked, they were all new to me except 'Bye Bye, Love'". The album produced Charles' biggest career hit, 'I can't stop loving you'. Charles was later to remark, "If they call me a genius, Sid Feller is Albert Einstein".

[Pair of embossed silver book covers, with two engraved silver clasps].[Netherlands?, ca. 1725?]. Pair of embossed silver book covers (34 x 25 x 3 cm); each cover with a large scrollwork cartouche surrounded by extensive vine and flower decorations and with medallion portraits in each of the four corners, the front showing the crucifixion flanked by Mary and St. John (with an "INRI" scroll above, flanked by a crescent moon and a sun, and a scull and crossbones below), with portraits of four saints, each with a blank scroll (above left bearded with a regal crown; above right clean-shaven with a round-topped mitre; below left and right bare-headed and bearded), the back showing the resurrection with an angel and two astonished guards, with portraits of the four Evangelists.

Cf.

        Rivista studi tradizionali

Rivista studi tradizionali. , , AA. VV.
