        Jazz Life

Offenburg: Burda Druck und Verlag, , 1961. Auf den Spuren des Jazz. Quarto. Original black cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover, coloured stylised "map" endpapers entitled "US of Jazz". Monochrome illustrations throughout (a few in colour). Spine sunned, a few marks to back cover, peripheral paper toning throughout; with the pocket for vinyl records at the end (the discs not present in this copy but they are rarely encountered). First edition, first printing, only reissued in English in a revised edition in 2005. Presentation copy from photographer William Claxton to the actor and acknowledged jazz fan Robert Mitchum, inscribed on the half-title: "For Bob Mitchum, a Swinger! William Claxton Feb. 1962" and with the library stamps stating "From the Estate of Robert Mitchum, Santa Barbara, California". A fascinating record in words and pictures of a coast-to-coast tour undertaken by the influential German broadcaster Joachim Berendt and leading jazz photographer William Claxton. Berendt's radio show "Jazztime Baden-Baden" pioneered the popularisation of jazz in post-war Germany. Claxton is the man behind the lens behind some iconic jazz images. Mitchum himself almost invented Hollywood "cool" in some of the most memorable screen performances from the 40s through to the 60s. What is not widely known is that he also had a career in music, releasing two vocal albums: Calypso - is like so... (Capitol 1957) and That Man Robert Mitchum... Sings (Monument 1967), the latter including "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" that peaked at number 9 in the country charts and was also covered by fellow Consul of Cool, Dean Martin. All in all, a rather cool association copy.

The Holy Bible, conteining the Old Testament, and the New: Newly translated out of the originall tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by his Majesties speciall Commandement Appointed to be Read in Churches

[colophon: Cleveland: World Publishers Folio. [737] ff.. 1961] A fine full-size facsimile on specially made "antique" paper from the Ventura Mill at Cernobbio, Italy, faithfully reproducing the black-letter text of the first edition, first issue (the "He" issue) of the King James Bible. => The edition was limited to 1500 copies, of which this is number 878. It was printed by offset lithography and bound in full leather by Amilcare Pizzi of Milan in a handsome replica of the type of binding found on some copies of this edition. Binding as above with leather abraded at edges, spine-tips, and bands; joints open and fragile; lacks the slipcase. Interior fresh, clean, and lovely. A compromised copy, but a handsome and interesting production not necessarily easy to find on the market; a large volume priced to permit its strengthening by a conservator should that be wished for.

Dedication, The Gift Outright, The Inaugural Address, Washington, D.C., January the Twentieth 1961

New York: The Spiral Press, 1961. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This is a fine press limited edition publication printed for friends of The Spiral Press in March of 1961 commemorating Robert FrostÂ’s participation in the January 20, 1961 Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. The book measures 11.5 x 7.75 inches, bound in grey paper-covered boards with the Seal of the President of the United States on the front cover. The contents are printed black and red with gilt and gray illustrations and include the poems “Dedication” and “The Gift Outright” as well as KennedyÂ’s inaugural address. This copy is hand numbered “483” of five hundred copies on the limitation page. On January 20th, 1961, iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration. Frost composed a new poem - “Dedication” - for the ceremony, but glare from the sun and snow famously prevented him from reading the sheet on which his poem was typed, so Frost instead recited “The Gift Outright” from memory. The new President, John F. Kennedy would say: “I've never taken the view the world of politics and the world of poetry are so far apart.” In the case of his relationship with Frost, this was more than just sentiment. In March of 1959, at a New York City press conference preceding a gala to celebrate his 85th birthday, Frost was asked about the alleged decline of New England and replied: “The next President of the United States will be from Boston. Does that sound as if New England is decaying?” Frost repeated the endorsement in the months to come, a boon to the junior Senator from Massachusetts. Kennedy wrote to Frost and quoted his poetry in his speeches. When Kennedy telegraphed Frost to ask him to speak at his Inauguration, Frost responded: “If you can bear at your age the honor of being made President of the United States, I ought to be able at my age to bear the honor of taking some part in your inauguration. I may not be equal to it but I can accept it for my cause – the arts, poetry, now for the first time taken into the affairs of statesmen.” Condition is very good. The gray paper-covered binding remains square and tight with sharp corners and unfaded color, marred only by some light overall soiling. The contents are bright with moderate spotting primarily confined to the endpapers and untrimmed fore edges. The sole previous ownership mark is the small bookplate of “Ruari McLean” affixed to the lower front pastedown. Ruari McLean (1917-2006) was a leading typographical designer whose ideas shaped the look of comics, magazines and fine art books, contributing to the postwar renaissance in the British printing industry. Like the new President, Ruari McLean served in the Navy (albeit British rather than American) during the Second World War. McLean was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1942 and the Distinguished Service Cross the following year. After the war he went to work for Penguin Books, leaving after a few years to engage in a series of partnerships and periodical and fine press projects, contributing in due course in many design fields, including shopfronts, newspapers and magazines. In 1966, he became adviser to the Stationery Office. McLean authored many works on book design, as well as an autobiography late in life, and was a talented draughtsman, whose drawings were admired and collected.

        Rabbit, Run

(London): Andre Deutsch. (1961). First. First English edition. Very slightly cocked, else fine in very slightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb, Best, John." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. A nice copy of a key title, the first book in the Rabbit tetralogy, the English edition is scarce signed. .

        Phantom Tollbooth.

New York: Epstein & Carroll, 1961. First edition of this modern classic. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by the author on the half title page, with the added words, "From the Lands Beyond Norton Juster." Also signed by Jules Feiffer, the illustrator. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket which has had some light professional restoration to the extremities. "This book has been described by Naomi Lewis as ?'the best original modern book in the Carroll line?'" (Carpenter & Prichard, 409). Anyone with an appreciation for the language and irony of Alice in Wonderland will consider this witty adventure a classic. The novel begins with a miserably bored lad who exclaims that "there is nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." Suddenly a tollbooth appears in his room, and, having no other interests, the lad Milo drives through it and sets off in his toy car for a mythic journey.

London: Jonathan Cape. 1961. - First Issue, Binding A, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Octavo, pp.254. A very good to near fine copy, in original pictorial dustwrapper. With characteristic ballpoint inscription to flyleaf; To/ Peter Werner/ from/ the Author. Recipient is likely the same Werner who became the prolific American film director- he would have been a teenager at the time of the inscription. This is one of a few titles from the Werner collection that were inscribed by Fleming. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story. Gilbert A9a (1.1). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

OUTBURST 1 & 2 [Complete Run] [with]: OUTBURST: The Minicab War

London: Matrix, (1961-63). First Edition. Wraps. Near fine. 8vo. stapled pictorial wraps all. Generally near fine. Mild soil to edges of issues one and two. Else clean, bright, and sharp overall. First issue includes the rare errata, as well as a small promotional flyer for the Loujon Press loosely laid in. Complete run of this short-lived but important little mag edited and printed by Raworth with type inherited from Piero Heliczer's Dead Language Press. Exhibiting much of the Dead Language aesthetic, OUTBURST's quirky layout and multi-color approach was born of necessity: both limited time and type meant printing was done just a couple of pages at a time, and with whatever ink might be leftover on a press. The result is one of the more charming productions of the mimeo revolution and the contributor list is stronger than the magazine's modest profile might suggest: Heliczer, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov, Christopher Logue, Anselm Hollo, Gael Turnbull, Edward Dorn, Michael Horovitz, Paul Klee, Paul Blackburn, Edward Steichen, Phillip Whalen, LeRoi Jones, Fielding Dawson, Allen Ginsberg, Edward Dorn, David Meltzer, Larry Eigner, and Gregory Corso all appear throughout OUTBURST's brief run. And it was Corso, along with Raworth and Hollo, who was responsible for MINICAB WAR, produced between issues one and two as a kind of supplement to the regular issues. A pseudonymous collection of fictitious interviews "with" T. S. Eliot, John Betjeman,U.K. Prime Minister Harold MacMillan, and others on the subject of Minicabs vs. Taxicabs, it prefigures later hoaxes such as Berrigan's John Cage "interview." Individual issues are uncommon. Scarce as a run, especially this complete.

There is minor wear at the edges and spine ends and one tiny chip at the left top edge. A most excellent copy! **Brenbooks specializes in books made into films. VERY RARE!
