Three Notebooks of Sketches and Plans for Installations, with related material

Various dates, mostly circa 1961-1963. Three composition books. Small quartos. Modest wear, mostly near fine. Heavily illustrated by the artist Ben Talbert, one of the most important artists in the Los Angeles circle that revolved around Wallace Berman and his publication Semina. Berman and his circle were at the forefront of avant-garde cultural and artistic experimentation on the West Coast, in effect, the western equivalent of Andy Warhol and his Factory workers, with sensibilities representing the Beat and early counterculture movements. These notebooks are from Talbert's most important period, and the most important period for his circle, when he was directly influenced by and collaborating with Berman, and most of the artworks presage Talbert's most cherished and representative themes -- nudes, intense sexuality, S&M scenes, and handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, assemblages, collages, or sculpture. Several drawings and plans are initialed and dated, although most are not, as normal for sketchbooks.Related material laid in include several nude and mildly sexual photographs of Talbert and a woman named Gayle, presumably his wife or girlfriend, used by them as Christmas Greetings, other clothed photographs of the couple, a handmade Valentine from Gayle to Talbert, several vintage color photographs of Talbert's framed work, a couple of different invitations to memorial retrospectives of his works (after his death in 1975 from a drug overdose at the age of 42), and several additional drawings by Talbert on a variety of different sizes of paper. The sketches, ranging from fully detailed drawings to impressionistic nudes, are executed in a variety of media: pencil, pen and ink, marker, gouache, colored pencil, watercolor, and a few in ball-point pen. There are 69 pages of reasonably fully executed drawings bound in, plus an additional five laid in, for a total of 74 pages of drawings. There are 21 pages of handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, plus another two laid in for a total of 23 pages. There are about 14 pages of drawing exercises bound in, where Talbert attempted to draw every conceivable object (often more than a dozen objects to a page). There is one additional drawing mounted and used as a greeting card that we are reasonably certain is by Talbert, as it is similar to his style and preferred subject matter (a spurting penis), but whose inscription: "Sam -- Luv, Tony" gives us pause. While the drawings are appealing and interesting, the plans for Pop installations, assemblages, and sculptures are fascinating, especially considering the time in which they were conceived. They include chastity-belts shaped and illustrated as police badges, and many variations on altered televisions, mostly with sexual twists and innuendos.Talbert's work was the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the Andrew Roth Gallery in New York in March of 2007. This is previously unrecorded material, representing vital and important work for an overlooked but important artist in the most interesting period of his career. .

Dust Bowl Books - Second Catalog [Larry McMurtry]

Dust Bowl Books, Houston, TX 1961 - Dust Bowl Books was the used and rare bookselling business Pulitzer and Oscar award winning author Larry McMurtry operated out of his apartment in Houston, Texas, while teaching at Rice University. McMurtry has been a used & rare book dealer for as long as he has been a published writer. This sheet, titled "Modern Firsts" lists multiple edition collections of four authors: Willa Cather, Jack London, Eskine Caldwell, and Vardis Fisher. Correspondence with this bookseller (copy included with purchase) indicates that McMurtry believes that this was the second list he issued in his first year as a bookseller. Rare in any respect, this copy of the list was sent to the Brick Row Bookshop in Austin, Texas, at that time operated by the late Franklin Gilliam. McMurtry chronicles his first list in his memoir, "Books: A Memoir" (pp. 89-90). 1 sheet. 4to. Standard 8-1/2 x 11" mimeographed sheet of paper that was folded in half and stapled together for mailing. Postmarked October 1, 1961. Light soiling along edges, clean overall.       London: Jonathan Cape. 1961. - First Issue, Binding A, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Octavo, pp.254. A very good to near fine copy, in original pictorial dustwrapper. With characteristic ballpoint inscription to flyleaf; To/ Peter Werner/ from/ the Author. Recipient is likely the same Werner who became the prolific American film director- he would have been a teenager at the time of the inscription. This is one of a few titles from the Werner collection that were inscribed by Fleming. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story. Gilbert A9a (1.1). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Catch - 22.

Simon & Schuster, New York 1961 - First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by Joseph Heller on the title page. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with a light rubbing to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very bright example. "Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177). (Madness and Insanity: History of Madness in the Classical Age) Librairie Plon, Paris, 1961. Half-title + TP + 1 leaf = dedication + [i] – xi = Preface + 1 leaf + [3] – 673 + [675] – [682] = Advertisements + 1 leaf = Imprime, Thick Octavo. First Edition.Foucault's first major book, written while he was the Director of the Maison de France in Sweden, and submitted as his major thesis for completion of his doctorate. History of Madness begins in the Middle Ages with vivid descriptions of the exclusion and confinement of lepers. Why, Foucault asks, when the leper houses were emptied at the end of the Middle Ages, were they turned into places of confinement for the mad? Why, within the space of several months in 1656, was one out of every hundred people in Paris confined? Shifting brilliantly from Descartes and early Enlightenment thought to the founding of the Hôpital Général in Paris and the work of early psychiatrists Philippe Pinel and Samuel Tuke, Foucault focuses throughout, not only on scientific and medical analyses of madness, but also on the philosophical and cultural values attached to the mad. He also urges us to recognize the creative and liberating forces that madness represents, brilliantly drawing on examples from Goya, Nietzsche, Van Gogh and Artaud. The History of Madness is an inspiring and classic work that challenges us to understand madness, reason and power and the forces that shape them. CONDITION: A very good copy in printed wrappers.       DELUXE EDITION, with a colored etching with aquatint by Chagall. By MEYER, Franz. N.Y., Abrams. 1961 One of the 100 copies of the EDITION DELUXE with the book guarded in the original red cloth box, and a colored etching with aquatint, numbered in pencil, in a separate portfolio. The book is complete of dust jacket and includes over 1250 illustrations and mounted plates in colors, signed in pencil by Chagall in colophon, and numbered in print. The Etching comes in a separate portfolio in red cloth matching the box where the book is guarded, and is numbered in pencil on the left bottom corner. The book presents several stains on the paper, as same the etching that is stained but only on the edges. The red box and red portfolio are slightly worn with scratches but solid attached.
