London: Jonathan Cape. 1961., 1961. First Issue, Binding A, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Octavo, pp.254. A very good to near fine copy, in original pictorial dustwrapper. With characteristic ballpoint inscription to flyleaf; To/ Peter Werner/ from/ the Author. Recipient is likely the same Werner who became the prolific American film director- he would have been a teenager at the time of the inscription. This is one of a few titles from the Werner collection that were inscribed by Fleming. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story. Gilbert A9a (1.1).

Norman Granz presents Jazz at the Philharmonic 1961

1961. Dizzy Gillespie Quintet feat. Leo Wright (as + flute) John Coltrane Quintet feat. Eric Dolphy (as) Elvin Jones (dm). Musikhalle, gr. Saal, [Hamburg], Sonnabend 25. November 1961. Vintage off-set litho. concert poster, A1 format. Size: 59.7 x 84 cm Crisp factory folds, short closed tears to left centre of the horizontal median fold and to the left margin, else very good, bright and unmarked; the poster is stored flat. First printing, artist not credited, but with its masterful balance of image and text it is clearly the work of Kieser and his colleague Hans Michel, who were responsible for the design of all of these German promotions during the late 50s and early 60s. Although the two jazz giants were on an extended tour of Europe and the UK, a tour particularly notable for the presence in Coltrane's quintet of the great altoist and bass clarinettist, Eric Dolphy, this stunning poster was designed exclusively for the concerts presented in Germany and copies are thus very uncommon and highly collectible in this condition.

Black cloth with bright gold lettering on spine; 1/8" diminished black across top spine (from sunning) beneath dw, which shows no sunning); newspaper clippings apparently stored between ffep verso and half-title page, leaving offset darkening around perimeters of ffep recto and verso (negligible on verso) and half-title page (darker than ffep recto); similar offsetting, ostensibly by news articles stored between rear flyleaf and last page of text verso, extending, diminishingly across rear cover pastedown: no text impacted by any offsetting; 6 1/2" of 8 1/4" (excluding top and bottom space) of fore-edge is offset, like coresponding perimeters of front and rear flyleafs, with top edge only mildly age-toned and bottom edge completely free of age-toning or darkening due to offsetting.         Van Diemen's Land Correspondents: Letters from C. Gunn, R. W. Lawrence, Jorgen Jorgenson, Sir John Franklin and others to Sir William J. Hooker

Queen Victoria Museum, Launceston, Tasmania, 1961, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, Limited Edition, Signed by Author(s)142 pages (complete) plus index. One of a limited edition of 1200. Signed by both Burns and Skemp on the title page. This title is part of the New Series (#14) of The Records of the Queen Victoria Museum, Launceston, Tasmania. Hooker was one the most important and influential botanists of his time. He, for example, was able to persuade the government at the time to include botanists in all future exploration expeditions. Although he never visited Van Diemen's Land, these correspondents were most eager to keep Hooker up to date with their discoveries and finds. Their letters coincide with his popular tenure at the University of Glasgow and the early years of his hugely important years as Director of Kew Gardens (he expanded the gardens, for example, from 10 acres to 75). The book is in general good repair. The cover is strong and sure. It has very general shelf marking and wear to the corners and the head and foot of the spine. The front and end papers have adhesive tape residue. The frontispage has a gift inscription. The contents are in studious, calm condition. The pages are clean, clear, assured, measured and tidy. fk Quantity Available: 1. Category: Botany; Signed by Author(s). Inventory No: amha.

Totalite et Infini (Totality and Infinity)

LEVINAS, Emmanuel. Totalite et Infini(Totality and Infinity). Martinus Nijhoff, La Haye, 1961. Half-Title + TP + [v] ?" vii = table des matieres + [ix] ?" xviii = preface + 1 leaf + [3] ?" 284 + loosely inserted "errata"; Octavo. First Edition.Levinas? magnum opus ?" and arguably one of the most important books in 20th century philosophy and ethics. Levinas re-frames the ethical moment in terms of the radical encounter with Other (alterity). Ethics lies in the responsibility one has for the other. As we encounter Other (alterity) in the face of the other, we can only respond with care for that other. It is the fundamentally existential moment.?Levinas's first book-length essay, Totality and Infinity (1961), was written as his Habilitation or Doctorat d'État. Transcendence is a significant focus of Totality and Infinity, coming to pass in the face-to-face relationship. For Levinas, to escape deontology and utility, ethics must find its ground in an experience that cannot be integrated into logics of control, prediction, or manipulation. Whether it takes the form of the conscious ?fit? between subject and object in Husserl's phenomenology, or whether a unity of mind and being evolves dialectically, rational activity can never become ?angelic?. That is, it cannot step outside the totalizing logics of metaphysical systems, without supposing them or restoring them. There is no formal bridge, for Levinas, between practical and pure reason. Philosophy in the twentieth century (Heidegger, the Frankfurt School, deconstruction) has shown, at least, that the universality of concepts and the necessity carried by transcendental arguments are simply not sufficient to prevent the triumph of ends-rationality and instrumentalization. Ethics is therefore either an affair of inserting particulars into abstract scenarios, or ethics itself speaks out of particularity about the first human particularity: the face-to-face relationship.? (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). In publisher?s original blue cloth with light blue, printed dustjacket. A clean, bright and tight copy. Scarce. Very good to near fine.
