        Keine Experimente

Eulenspiegel, Berlin 1961 - Alvermann's photographs made between 1956 and 1961 are juxtaposed against the first 9 articles of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany and in part acts as a critique of the consumerism and the attitudes that the free-market brought. This scarce book opens with a page spread of a crowd locked behind a gate reminiscent of a concentration camp. A reminder of a difficult history that many of the population wished to disappear -- something the new economic policies made easier. When the gates open into this new society we are faced with billboards offering the Ten Commandments and bottles of Coca-Cola. The faces of the workers on the following spread seem confused and uncertain. .Keine Experimente's construction and, again, Alvermann's use of design is most effective. Like with his book on Algeria, he creates a kind of photojournalist's Klein's New York utilizing slivers of photos and graphic pairings that are visually exciting creating new meanings from disparate images -- a kind of assemblage of history and commentary. Keine Experimente is a pocket-sized book with glossy illustrated hardcovers and is not much larger than a common novel. The printing is on rather cheap paper but the low-fi production is very seductive and adds a gritty edge to a supposed bright reality. (Jeff Ladd) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Extraordinary letter! Eisenhower writes about the failed Bay of Pigs invasion during the Kennedy presidency. Ike had allocated $13.1 million to the CIA just a year before - " I said that the American people were disturbed by the 'seeming indecision and uncertainty that characterized governmental action in Cuba' ? To top it all - I have a clipping of a Goldwater column that refers to the 'inept Eisenhower Administration in Cuba' affair - Who is he to be such a genius??"

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1961. 7" x 10.25". "Typed Letter Signed ""Ike"" with thirty-one word handwritten postscript incorporating ""Eisenhower"" signed ""DE,"" two full pages, 7"" x 10.25"", separate sheets. Gettysburg, PA, September 29, 1961. To Major General Wilton B. Persons, his White House Chief of Staff (1958-1961). On Ike's ""DDE"" gilt engraved stationery. Fine condition. In part, ""As you know, I thoroughly believe that when we face specific foreign problems or the government enunciates a specific policy involving our foreign activities, all of us owe it to ourselves as well as to the government to stand unanimously behind the President. On the other hand, I by no means believe that we should ignore our own right -- indeed, duty -- to look at past events with an impartial eye and try to keep the record straight.""In my Chicago speech I said that the American people were disturbed by the 'seeming indecision and uncertainty that characterized governmental action in Cuba.' I used the word 'seeming' because I was not there. However, the detailed account given by Charlie Murphy in a recent issue of Fortune magazine has all the earmarks of authenticity, and since the government itself did not choose to give a detailed account of the whole affair even though it has now passed into history, I think we must consider it about as good a record as we are going to get. Nevertheless Bryce [Harlow] tells me that the White House did not like my language and had been putting the story out to certain reporters that I had 'gone partisan in foreign affairs ...'Eisenhower adds a handwritten postscript: ""P.S. To top it all - I have a clipping of a Goldwater column that refers to the 'inept Eisenhower Administration in Cuba' affair- Who is he to be such a genius?? DE""The letter can be read in its entirety in the images above.A photocopy of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater's syndicated September 24, 1961, column is present. It includes this sentence: ""The inept handling of the Cuban situation by the Eisenhower administration and the tragic indecision of the Kennedy administration have encouraged our enemies to test our will once more in Berlin.""The failed Bay of Pigs invasionFrom the JFK Library: ""Before his inauguration, John F. Kennedy was briefed on a plan by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) developed during the Eisenhower administration to train Cuban exiles for an invasion of their homeland ... President Eisenhower approved the program in March 1960. The CIA set up training camps in Guatemala, and by November the operation had trained a small army for an assault landing and guerilla warfare ... Shortly after his inauguration, in February 1961, President Kennedy authorized the invasion plan ... On April 17, the Cuban-exile invasion force ... landed at beaches along the Bay of Pigs and immediately came under heavy fire ... Over the next 24 hours, Castro ordered roughly 20,000 troops to advance toward the beach, and the Cuban air force continued to control the skies ... at dawn on April 19?"six unmarked American fighter planes took off to help defend the brigade's B-26 aircraft flying ... They were shot down by the Cubans, and the invasion was crushed later that day ...       443 pages. Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with white lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition.Catch-22 is a satirical novel by the American author Joseph Heller. He began writing it in 1953; the novel was first published in 1961. It is frequently cited as one of the greatest literary works of the twentieth century. It uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, describing events from the points of view of different characters. The separate story-lines are out of sequence so that the timeline develops along with the plot. The novel is set during World War II, from 1942 to 1944. It mainly follows the life of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th Squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea, west of Italy. The novel looks into the experiences of Yossarian and the other airmen in the camp, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home. The novel's title refers to a plot device that is repeatedly invoked in the story. Catch-22 starts as a set of paradoxical requirements whereby airmen mentally unfit to fly did not have to, but could not actually be excused. By the end of the novel it is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. The phrase "Catch-22" has since entered the English language, referring to a type of unsolvable logic puzzle sometimes called a double bind. According to the novel, people who were crazy were not obliged to fly missions; but anyone who applied to stop flying was showing a rational concern for their safety, and was sane. While sitting at home one morning in 1953, Heller thought of the lines, "It was love at first sight. The first time he saw the chaplain, [Yossarian] fell madly in love with him." Within the next day, he began to envision the story that could result from this beginning, and invented the characters, the plot, and the tone that the story would eventually take. Within a week, he had finished the first chapter and sent it to his agent. He did not do any more writing for the next year, as he planned the rest of the story. The initial chapter was published in 1955 as "Catch-18", in Issue 7 of New World Writing. Although he originally did not intend the story to be longer than a novelette, Heller was able to add enough substance to the plot that he felt it could become his first novel. When he was one-third done with the work, his agent, Candida Donadio, sent it to publishers. Heller was not particularly attached to the work, and decided that he would not finish it if publishers were not interested. The work was soon purchased by Simon and Schuster, who gave him US $750 and promised him an additional $750 when the full manuscript was delivered. Heller missed his deadline by four to five years, but, after eight years of thought, delivered the novel to his publisher. Just before publication, the novel's title was changed to Catch-22 to avoid confusion with Leon Uris' new novel, Mila 18. The novel was published in hardback in 1961 to mixed reviews, with theChicago Sun-Times calling it "the best American novel in years", while other critics derided it as "disorganized, unreadable, and crass". It sold only 30,000 copies in the United States hardback in its first year of publication. Reaction was very different in the UK, where, within one week of its publication, the novel was number one on the bestseller lists. In the years after its release in paperback in October 1962, however, Catch-22 caught the imaginations of many baby boomers, who identified with the novel's anti-war sentiments. The book went on to sell 10 million copies in the United States. The novel's title became a standard term in English and other languages for a dilemma with no easy way out. Now considered a classic, the book was listed at number 7 on Modern Library's list of the top 100 novels of the century.Condition:Some fading of cloth, a few small stains, slight stain/scratch to front panel, light rubbing to spine ends. Jacket chip to spine ends and top of rear panel, also a few minor chips and tears, light wear and soling else a very good copy in like jacket.

Three Notebooks of Sketches and Plans for Installations, with related material

Various dates, mostly circa 1961-1963. Three composition books. Small quartos. Modest wear, mostly near fine. Heavily illustrated by the artist Ben Talbert, one of the most important artists in the Los Angeles circle that revolved around Wallace Berman and his publication Semina. Berman and his circle were at the forefront of avant-garde cultural and artistic experimentation on the West Coast, in effect, the western equivalent of Andy Warhol and his Factory workers, with sensibilities representing the Beat and early counterculture movements. These notebooks are from Talbert's most important period, and the most important period for his circle, when he was directly influenced by and collaborating with Berman, and most of the artworks presage Talbert's most cherished and representative themes -- nudes, intense sexuality, S&M scenes, and handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, assemblages, collages, or sculpture. Several drawings and plans are initialed and dated, although most are not, as normal for sketchbooks.Related material laid in include several nude and mildly sexual photographs of Talbert and a woman named Gayle, presumably his wife or girlfriend, used by them as Christmas Greetings, other clothed photographs of the couple, a handmade Valentine from Gayle to Talbert, several vintage color photographs of Talbert's framed work, a couple of different invitations to memorial retrospectives of his works (after his death in 1975 from a drug overdose at the age of 42), and several additional drawings by Talbert on a variety of different sizes of paper. The sketches, ranging from fully detailed drawings to impressionistic nudes, are executed in a variety of media: pencil, pen and ink, marker, gouache, colored pencil, watercolor, and a few in ball-point pen. There are 69 pages of reasonably fully executed drawings bound in, plus an additional five laid in, for a total of 74 pages of drawings. There are 21 pages of handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, plus another two laid in for a total of 23 pages. There are about 14 pages of drawing exercises bound in, where Talbert attempted to draw every conceivable object (often more than a dozen objects to a page). There is one additional drawing mounted and used as a greeting card that we are reasonably certain is by Talbert, as it is similar to his style and preferred subject matter (a spurting penis), but whose inscription: "Sam -- Luv, Tony" gives us pause. While the drawings are appealing and interesting, the plans for Pop installations, assemblages, and sculptures are fascinating, especially considering the time in which they were conceived. They include chastity-belts shaped and illustrated as police badges, and many variations on altered televisions, mostly with sexual twists and innuendos.Talbert's work was the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the Andrew Roth Gallery in New York in March of 2007. This is previously unrecorded material, representing vital and important work for an overlooked but important artist in the most interesting period of his career. .

        Catch - 22

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1961. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by Joseph Heller on the title page. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with a light rubbing to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very bright example. Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177).
