        Phantom Tollbooth.

New York: Epstein & Carroll, 1961. First edition of this modern classic. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by the author on the half title page, with the added words, "From the Lands Beyond Norton Juster." Also signed by Jules Feiffer, the illustrator. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket which has had some light professional restoration to the extremities. "This book has been described by Naomi Lewis as ?'the best original modern book in the Carroll line?'" (Carpenter & Prichard, 409). Anyone with an appreciation for the language and irony of Alice in Wonderland will consider this witty adventure a classic. The novel begins with a miserably bored lad who exclaims that "there is nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." Suddenly a tollbooth appears in his room, and, having no other interests, the lad Milo drives through it and sets off in his toy car for a mythic journey.

OUTBURST 1 & 2 [Complete Run] [with]: OUTBURST: The Minicab War

London: Matrix, (1961-63). First Edition. Wraps. Near fine. 8vo. stapled pictorial wraps all. Generally near fine. Mild soil to edges of issues one and two. Else clean, bright, and sharp overall. First issue includes the rare errata, as well as a small promotional flyer for the Loujon Press loosely laid in. Complete run of this short-lived but important little mag edited and printed by Raworth with type inherited from Piero Heliczer's Dead Language Press. Exhibiting much of the Dead Language aesthetic, OUTBURST's quirky layout and multi-color approach was born of necessity: both limited time and type meant printing was done just a couple of pages at a time, and with whatever ink might be leftover on a press. The result is one of the more charming productions of the mimeo revolution and the contributor list is stronger than the magazine's modest profile might suggest: Heliczer, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov, Christopher Logue, Anselm Hollo, Gael Turnbull, Edward Dorn, Michael Horovitz, Paul Klee, Paul Blackburn, Edward Steichen, Phillip Whalen, LeRoi Jones, Fielding Dawson, Allen Ginsberg, Edward Dorn, David Meltzer, Larry Eigner, and Gregory Corso all appear throughout OUTBURST's brief run. And it was Corso, along with Raworth and Hollo, who was responsible for MINICAB WAR, produced between issues one and two as a kind of supplement to the regular issues. A pseudonymous collection of fictitious interviews "with" T. S. Eliot, John Betjeman,U.K. Prime Minister Harold MacMillan, and others on the subject of Minicabs vs. Taxicabs, it prefigures later hoaxes such as Berrigan's John Cage "interview." Individual issues are uncommon. Scarce as a run, especially this complete.

Each text page with rubrication in red and blue, small initials with trailing flourishes in margins, THE OPENING LEAVES OF THE VARIOUS BOOKS WITH ELABORATE INITIALS AND MARGINAL EMBELLISHMENT IN SEVERAL COLORS AND GOLD, chapter initials in red or blue. A virtually mint copy, as new internally. Only the second Gutenberg facsimile to be printed, this production is based on the earlier Insel Verlag facsimile (Leipzig, 1913-14), which was derived from the Gutenberg copies at Berlin and Fulda (considered the most beautifully illuminated of all known copies). It is hand bound and printed on 100% rag paper, with text leaves lithographed, and illuminated leaves produced by sheet-fed gravure. The quality of the materials and workmanship that went into this project suggest the magnificence and significance of the object being replicated. So far as we can tell, the publisher issued this facsimile in cloth and in red morocco, so our calf binding might well have been specially done--it is not only in virtually mint condition, but it is also attractive and appropriate. ONE OF 1,000 NUMBERED SETS (996 for sale, this set unnumbered). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE WASTE LAND.,

Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1961 (London: Faber & Faber). - 8 x 11 1/4. (9), 11- 52, (1 ) pages. Vellum-backed marbled boards with matching s/c. The s/c was too tight for both for this publication and the Four Quartets which was issued in a similar format; it has usually split with use and frequently resulted in wear to the cover edges. The case on this copy has been rehabilitated by a local binder who has covered/reinforced the joints with green cloth. There is very slight wear to the edges. A fine copy. One of 300 numbered copies signed by Eliot. Designed and printed by Hans Mardersteig in his Dante type on Magnani paper. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
