Presidentially used and superbly documented: Four fancy Dresden porcelain figurines from the Kennedy White House

n.p., c. 1961-1963. various. "Four pieces of Dresden porcelain, consisting of two cherub figurines (6"" tall), together with two centerpiece holders (5.75"" x 1.75"" x 2.25""), all marked ""N / Dresden"" in blue on the base. All four pieces are in excellent condition, save for two barely noticeable small chips and some minor but expected soiling to the bases.Following Kennedy's assassination, Kenneth O'Donnel and Charlie Rotchford gave the set as a gift to Martin E. Underwood in early 1964. Underwood served as a Special Assistant to both Presidents John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. The porcelain pieces are accompanied by a copy of Underwood's letter attesting to the provenance. The figurines were produced in Bavaria by the firm Höffner, which opened a small manufactory in Sandizell in 1951. The firm was staffed by refugees from Thuringia who were well-versed in the traditional Dresden style. The maker's marks on the bottoms are consistent with items produced in the 1960s. Offered with a copy of a receipt form Gurnsey's 1998 auction of Robert White's Kennedy collection."

The Sword of Honour Trilogy: Men at Arms; Officers and Gentlemen; and Unconditional Surrender

London: Chapman and Hall, 1961. First editions. Fine/Near Fine. The first book, Fine in a very nearly Fine dust jacket, that is very slightly faded along the spine, otherwise Fine. Book two is Fine in a very nearly Fine, price-clipped dust jacket that has a small number stamped at the top of the rear panel and slight toning at the extremities. The third book also Fine in a very nearly Fine dust jacket with slight soiling on the rear panel. Praised as three of the finest World War II novels, the Sword of Honour trilogy follows Guy Crouchback, a British Roman Catholic who joins the fictional Royal Corps of Halberdiers. Based on Waugh's own observations in World War II, Crouchback serves as commentator for the ironic state of the British army and the bureaucracy of modern warfare. His character questions the place of romantic heroism in the modern world and ridicules the traditions of British society. Critic Edmund Wilson wrote that Waugh "is likely to figure as the only first-rate comic genius that has appeared in English since Bernard Shaw." Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

THE GAY PLACE. Being Three Related Novels THE FLEA CIRCUS, ROOM ENOUGH TO CAPER, COUNTRY PLEASURES.

Boston:: Houghton Mifflin and Co.,. 1961.. First edition. The author's only book. An advance copy INSCRIBED by Brammer, "For Wm. Beckman -- Friend of famous Arthurs / Pen Pay of Genius Poets / Patron of the Pataphysician. From his boon companion Wm. (B. L.) Brammer 3/21/63 (4 a. m.)." One of the best political novels we've read. Brammer worked for LBJ and became a heavy user of drugs which eventually led to his death. Set in an unnamed state identical to Texas, each novella has a different protagonist: a member of the state legislature; the state's junior senator; and the governor's speechwriter. The governor himself, Arthur Fenstemaker, a master politician (said to have been based on Brammer's mentor Lyndon Johnson) serves as the dominant figure throughout. The book also includes characters based on Ladybird, and LBJ's brother Sam Houston Johnson. The book, which earned the author a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award. has been widely acclaimed as one of the best American political novels ever written. Yellow printed wraps a bit soiled and a bit worn on edges but still very good. .

MASTERING THE ART OF FRENCH COOKING

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. Book Near Fine on account of some small spots of foxing to the closed fore-edge of the page block. Price-clipped dust jacket Very Good+ with minor toning at the top of the front panel, spine a bit faded and a couple little nicks on the edges of the rear panel. First issue dust jacket with the correct points; several copies on the market listed as firsts are in jackets married from later printings. Child's culinary impact was felt long before the latest craze in the wake of the 2009 film "Julie & Julia," starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams (particularly by those of us in her hometown of Pasadena). A scarce first in any condition, but, not surprisingly, most copies splattered with wine around the coq a vin recipe, glued with cheese on the soufflé page and seemingly dipped in hollandaise sauce, not to mention the copious notes written in the margins around family favorites. This copy suffers from none of those annoyances; a true collector's copy. Near Fine in Very Good +. dust jacket.

        Jazz Life

Offenburg: Burda Druck und Verlag, , 1961. Auf den Spuren des Jazz. Quarto. Original black cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover, coloured stylised "map" endpapers entitled "US of Jazz". Monochrome illustrations throughout (a few in colour). Spine sunned, a few marks to back cover, peripheral paper toning throughout; with the pocket for vinyl records at the end (the discs not present in this copy but they are rarely encountered). First edition, first printing, only reissued in English in a revised edition in 2005. Presentation copy from photographer William Claxton to the actor and acknowledged jazz fan Robert Mitchum, inscribed on the half-title: "For Bob Mitchum, a Swinger! William Claxton Feb. 1962" and with the library stamps stating "From the Estate of Robert Mitchum, Santa Barbara, California". A fascinating record in words and pictures of a coast-to-coast tour undertaken by the influential German broadcaster Joachim Berendt and leading jazz photographer William Claxton. Berendt's radio show "Jazztime Baden-Baden" pioneered the popularisation of jazz in post-war Germany. Claxton is the man behind the lens behind some iconic jazz images. Mitchum himself almost invented Hollywood "cool" in some of the most memorable screen performances from the 40s through to the 60s. What is not widely known is that he also had a career in music, releasing two vocal albums: Calypso - is like so... (Capitol 1957) and That Man Robert Mitchum... Sings (Monument 1967), the latter including "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" that peaked at number 9 in the country charts and was also covered by fellow Consul of Cool, Dean Martin. All in all, a rather cool association copy.

This is a fine press limited edition publication printed for friends of The Spiral Press in March of 1961 commemorating Robert FrostÂ’s participation in the January 20, 1961 Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. The book measures 11.5 x 7.75 inches, bound in grey paper-covered boards with the Seal of the President of the United States on the front cover. The contents are printed black and red with gilt and gray illustrations and include the poems “Dedication” and “The Gift Outright” as well as KennedyÂ’s inaugural address. This copy is hand numbered “483” of five hundred copies on the limitation page. On January 20th, 1961, iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration. Frost composed a new poem - “Dedication” - for the ceremony, but glare from the sun and snow famously prevented him from reading the sheet on which his poem was typed, so Frost instead recited “The Gift Outright” from memory. The new President, John F. Kennedy would say: “I've never taken the view the world of politics and the world of poetry are so far apart.” In the case of his relationship with Frost, this was more than just sentiment. In March of 1959, at a New York City press conference preceding a gala to celebrate his 85th birthday, Frost was asked about the alleged decline of New England and replied: “The next President of the United States will be from Boston. Does that sound as if New England is decaying?” Frost repeated the endorsement in the months to come, a boon to the junior Senator from Massachusetts. Kennedy wrote to Frost and quoted his poetry in his speeches. When Kennedy telegraphed Frost to ask him to speak at his Inauguration, Frost responded: “If you can bear at your age the honor of being made President of the United States, I ought to be able at my age to bear the honor of taking some part in your inauguration. I may not be equal to it but I can accept it for my cause – the arts, poetry, now for the first time taken into the affairs of statesmen.” Condition is very good. The gray paper-covered binding remains square and tight with sharp corners and unfaded color, marred only by some light overall soiling. The contents are bright with moderate spotting primarily confined to the endpapers and untrimmed fore edges. The sole previous ownership mark is the small bookplate of “Ruari McLean” affixed to the lower front pastedown. Ruari McLean (1917-2006) was a leading typographical designer whose ideas shaped the look of comics, magazines and fine art books, contributing to the postwar renaissance in the British printing industry. Like the new President, Ruari McLean served in the Navy (albeit British rather than American) during the Second World War. McLean was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1942 and the Distinguished Service Cross the following year. After the war he went to work for Penguin Books, leaving after a few years to engage in a series of partnerships and periodical and fine press projects, contributing in due course in many design fields, including shopfronts, newspapers and magazines. In 1966, he became adviser to the Stationery Office. McLean authored many works on book design, as well as an autobiography late in life, and was a talented draughtsman, whose drawings were admired and collected.

        Rabbit, Run

(London): Andre Deutsch. (1961). First. First English edition. Very slightly cocked, else fine in very slightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb, Best, John." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. A nice copy of a key title, the first book in the Rabbit tetralogy, the English edition is scarce signed. .

        Phantom Tollbooth.

New York: Epstein & Carroll, 1961. First edition of this modern classic. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by the author on the half title page, with the added words, "From the Lands Beyond Norton Juster." Also signed by Jules Feiffer, the illustrator. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket which has had some light professional restoration to the extremities. "This book has been described by Naomi Lewis as ?'the best original modern book in the Carroll line?'" (Carpenter & Prichard, 409). Anyone with an appreciation for the language and irony of Alice in Wonderland will consider this witty adventure a classic. The novel begins with a miserably bored lad who exclaims that "there is nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." Suddenly a tollbooth appears in his room, and, having no other interests, the lad Milo drives through it and sets off in his toy car for a mythic journey.
