        Thunderball - a superb copy

London Cape 1961 - A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1961. A fine book (trace of a few spots to the top edge) - no inscriptions, in a fine unclipped wrapper with a little rubbing to the rear panel - a superb example of this title. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Thunderball.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1961. Octavo. Original dark brown boards, titles to spine gilt (Gilbert's Binding A, no priority), skeletal hand design on front board in blind. With the pictorial dust jacket. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. A little foxing to edges of text block; an excellent copy in the bright jacket with a little rubbing and a few nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression. Ian Fleming's novel Thunderball incorporated material from an unproduced screenplay he had worked on in 1958 in collaboration with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ivar Bryce, with the result that Fleming found himself in a well-publicised case in the High Court defending himself against McClory's accusations of plagiarism, though Fleming and McClory eventually settled out of court.

        CATCH-22

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961 Heller on the origin of the title "Catch-22". FIRST EDITION. Inscribed and signed by Heller: "To Jim Pepper: Who might be interested to know that if not for a novel by Leon Uris called Mila 18, this copy of Catch-22 would be Catch-18. Best wishes Joseph Heller 9/20/78." Heller planned to call the novel Catch-18, but his editor, Robert Gottlieb, warned that best-selling novelist Leon Uris was about to publish Mila 18. As an alternative, Gottlieb suggested Catch-22, and the term became part of our everyday language. For Heller and Uris, both of whom were Jewish, the number 18 had special meaning. The Hebrew number 18, yud-het, uses the same letters as the word for life, het-yud. For this reason, donations to Jewish charities and gifts for special occasions are commonly made in multiples of 18, and the number is traditionally associated with good fortune and vitality. A wonderful inscribed copy of this modern classic.

Gesigneerd 'fbordewijk' en gedateerd '24 mei 1963'. 11 regels tekst. 7. 'Wandelingen door Den Haag en omstreken'. Origineel typoscript. 34,1 x 21,4 cm. Zeventien bladen. Alleen recto. [1961-1962]. Uniek ensemble.

Dedication, The Gift Outright, The Inaugural Address, Washington, D.C., January the Twentieth 1961, accompanied by an invitation from Secretary of the Interior Stewart Lee Udall and his wife for a 26 March 1962 dinner honoring Robert Frost, and the menu from the dinner Copy #96 of 500

New York: The Spiral Press, 1961. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This fine press limited edition was printed in March of 1961, commemorating Robert Frost's participation in the January 20, 1961 Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. This copy is noteworthy in several respects. Condition is exceptional, the slim, fragile volume still protected by its original glassine dust jacket. Moreover, laid in we found a printed invitation and menu from U.S. Secretary of the Interior Udall and his wife to a 26 March 1962 birthday dinner for Frost “on the occasion of his birthday and the publication of his new book of poetry”. It was Stewart Lee Udall (1920-2010) who recommended that President Kennedy ask Frost to read an original poem at Kennedy's inauguration. A noted conservationist and environmental protection advocate, Udall served three terms as an Arizona Congressman before serving as Secretary of the Interior from 1961-1969 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. The book measures 11.5 x 7.75 inches, bound in grey paper-covered boards with a presidential eagle seal on the front cover. The contents are printed black and red with gilt and gray illustrations on ivory laid paper with untrimmed fore and bottom edges. Contents include the poems “Dedication” and “The Gift Outright” as well as Kennedy's inaugural address. This copy is hand-numbered “96” of five hundred copies on the limitation page. The binding is beautifully clean, marred only by a few trivial bumps. The contents are bright and clean with transfer browning to the pastedowns from the binding glue. The glassine dust wrapper is complete, albeit toned with some creasing, spotting, and closed tears. The menu and invitation are in fine condition. On January 20th, 1961, iconic American poet Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration. Frost composed a new poem - “Dedication” - for the ceremony, but glare from the sun and snow famously prevented him from reading the sheet on which his poem was typed, so Frost instead recited “The Gift Outright” from memory. The new President, John F. Kennedy would say: “I've never taken the view the world of politics and the world of poetry are so far apart.” In the case of his relationship with Frost, this was more than just sentiment. In March of 1959, at a New York City press conference preceding a gala to celebrate his 85th birthday, Frost was asked about the alleged decline of New England and replied: “The next President of the United States will be from Boston. Does that sound as if New England is decaying?” Frost repeated the endorsement in the months to come, a boon to the junior Senator from Massachusetts. Kennedy wrote to Frost and quoted his poetry in his speeches. When Kennedy telegraphed Frost to ask him to speak at his Inauguration, Frost responded: “If you can bear at your age the honor of being made President of the United States, I ought to be able at my age to bear the honor of taking some part in your inauguration. I may not be equal to it but I can accept it for my cause – the arts, poetry, now for the first time taken into the affairs of statesmen.” Ironically, the quintessential poetic voice of New England was born in San Francisco and it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children – “the place to be poor and to write poems” – that catalyzed his recognition. Returning to America in 1915 after publication of his second book, Frost embarked on “the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever ‘subjects' he pleased at a congenial college… and ‘barding around,' his term for ‘saying' poems in a conversational performance.” (ANB) By 1924 he had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent his final decade and a half as “the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century” with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit, the capstone of which was reading at President Kennedy's inauguration.

        Thunderball.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961 - Octavo. Gilbert A9a (1.1). [Attributes: First Edition]
