Octavo (21.75cm); metallic gray cloth and black leatherette, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; publisher's black paper-covered slipcase with white wraparound title label printed in black; [2], 70, [4]pp; text is chiefly in Japanese. Third translation into any language of Ginsberg's best-known work of poetry, preceded only by translations into Spanish (1957) and German (1959). This edition contains notes on the poem in Japanese by Gary Snyder, who moved to Japan in 1955. His move, in large measure to intensively study and practice Zen Buddhism, would occupy the better part of the next decade. He was incredibly influential among the Beats, particularly Jack Kerouac, who based the princpal character (Japhy Ryder) in his 1958 novel The Dharma Bums on Snyder. Through Snyder's influence, Kerouac, Ginsberg, and others would help to popularize Zen Buddhism in the West. Scarce; OCLC finds 2 copies only (UNC Chapel Hill, National Diet Library).         For the New Intellectual: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand.

New York: Random House, 1961. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by Ayn Rand on the half-title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears and wear to the extremities. "Rand's 1961 book For The New Intellectual outlines her philosophical system of Objectivism by means of excerpts from We The Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged She then opens the book with an essay on the cultural bankruptcy that has undermined the capitalistic system of the United States. The essay is directed at 'the New Intellectuals' needed to restore and defend a capitalist economy in the face of that cultural bankruptcy. Rand is very clear that neither pragmatic nor economic argument is what must be used. Instead, it is arguments for 'a new morality of rational self-interest' that will provide the foundation for a new capitalist culture" (Bostaph, Journal of Ayn Rand Studies 11:1,20).

        Noah's Ark

(London: Bancroft & Co, 1961. Kubasta, Vojtech. Quarto. 8pp., plus a pop-up at the end of the book designed by the acclaimed Czech artist and paper engineer Vojtech Kubasta. The book opens with a retelling of the Genesis chapters that chronicle Noah and the floodm and this is illustrated with black & white head-and tailpieces, and depictions of Noah addressing the animals inside the front cover. With a stunning, colorful, three dimensional pop-up of the ark, showing a variety of animals working on it with hand tools. An unusual feature of this pop-up is a volvelle that shows a changing animal head atop a mamalian body, with a similar arrangement for a bird just beside it. On the rear of the volvelle, we see that a monkey is spinning this wheel, adding a touch of whimsy to this tableaux. The book's three-fold board covers open flat, allowing the pop-up scene to stand up on its own. In a recent New York Times feature on Kubasta, paper engineer Robert Sabuda, who was inspired by Kubasta's books at an early age, described Kubasta's work as unusual in that he was able to create astonishingly complex, detailed scenes with a single sheet of paper. His pop-up books are also known for their bold, rich color and were printed in Czechoslovakia on special pre-war presses at the state-run publishing house Artia. An unusually very fine copy bound in bright, illustrated boards depicting Noah and his many charges navigating the waters of the deluge. (Grimes, William, "Wizard Who Made Art Jump Off the Page," New York Times, Jan. 31, 2014).

Egy kocsivásárlás története 9 képen. F?szerepl?k (föszereplök): Cserni Ferenc, Trabant-Limousine, és még sokan mások. [A Story of a Car-Buy in Nine Acts. Starring: Ferenc Cserni, Trabant-Limousine, and Others.]

Dated in 1961 - Drawn, hand-coloured portfolio with 12 images. In original wrappers. An ironic cartoon about "buying" new car, a Trabant in the Socialist Hungary. Beside the casual jokes about buying a new car like problems of parking, unaccustomed measures, or the addiction to the new car, it gives an ironic insight to the car buying experiences in planned economy of a Socialist country. In the Eastern Block only those cars were available for the people that were produced within the Block for the domestic market, like the East German car, the Trabant. A person who wanted to buy a car had to submit an application for the vehicle by post (image 3), and than wait, most cases ages, until the car was allocated by a committee, and the person received the "car-buying permission". In this story the application turned back (image 4), but for some unknown reason - which was also common phenomena of the system - the buyer receives a call from the distribution-site, that they are expecting him to show up for his "allocation" (image 5). In such cases the buyer had to bring cash and passes to get the car (image 6), and he had no possibility to choose the type or the colour (image 7). With handwritten note on front cover, "received as a gift from my colleagues at the department on 10. 02. 1961.". In fine condition. Drawn, hand-coloured portfolio with 12 images.         Anarchy - First Series

Anarchy - First Series complete, issues 1-118, 1961-1970. Original card covers, each 32pp. Staples generally rusted, minor rubbing to extremities, spines sometimes lightly faded, one or two with previous owner's names in, occasional light foxing to edges of text blocks. Number 7 has a bookplate to reverse of upper cover, obscuring some of the 'other issues' text, top edge stained of numbers 83, 89, 104 and 110, covers lightly stained of numbers 107, 115 and 118, number 3 has had two of the articles listed on the upper cover 'boxed' in pen, but they are generally fairly bright and clean. Number 105 has the standard typographic cover as usual (not the suppressed graphic cover). A complete set of the first series of Anarchy, in original wrappers. Most issues are on a specific theme examined from an Anarchist perspective, ie. Crime and Punishment, India, Automation, Poverty, Spain, Education etc. Comfortably the best English language Anarchist periodical ever produced, it includes work by Ward, Bookchin, Walter, Chomsky and Goodman amongst many others. The cover designs, mainly by Segar, but also by others, were replicated recently in a book, edited by Poyner, called 'Autonomy', which also has a very useful index to 'Anarchy'
