The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1961 12th Impression in Original Dustjacket

London: Allen & Unwin, 1961. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1961. The book is in Near Fine condition, with no soiling or wear at all. A couple of lightly bumped corners, with a bit of fading to the spine and lower edges where sunlight has penetrated thru (or over) the white portions of the dustjacket. Tiny previous owners name to the upper edge of the front pastedown, hidden by the dustjacket flap, no other writing, foxing, or offsetting noted. The boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design The title verso has the full printing history up to this twelfth impression of 1961. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 12th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. The dustjacket is price clipped and in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, with only the most minor of rubbing to the edges and tips of the flap folds, and with a tiny bit of loss to the upper spine fold areas where there are two closed tears with some minor color loss. Colors are bright and unsoiled, with a slight darkening of the spine. Edges of the text block are only lightly soiled and unfoxed. A custom green leather slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to house and protect this classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested.         Steps Toward Artificial Intelligence" in Proceedings of the IRE, Vol. 49, No. 1, 1961, pp. 8-30

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PRINTED WRAPPERS OF MINSKY'S "SEMINAL" WORK ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (MIT Biography). In this paper, Minsky outlines the basic features of AI programs that today still form the basis of artificial solving, including searching and pattern-recognition techniques. This work established symbol manipulation - divided into heuristic search, pattern recognition, learning, planning, and induction - to be at the center of any attempt at understanding intelligence (A.C.M. Statement of Minsky's achievements). Marvin Minsky was a pioneer of robotics and tele-presence who designed and built some of the first visual scanners, mechanical hands with tactile sensors, one of the first LOGO 'turtles', and their software and hardware interfaces - works that influenced many subsequent robotic projects. This 1961 work by Minsky surveyed and analyzed what had been done before and outlined many major problems that the infant discipline of artificial intelligence would later need to face. This paper "reveals a remarkable catalogue of techniques that had been developed in less than a decade's worth of research, [including] "basic forms of search, evaluation, and learning, but also the beginnings of a model of intelligence and a way that programs could begin to 'understand' their own behavior. Minsky ended the paper with a look toward a future where time-sharing and multiprocessing programs would provide easier access to a growing amount of computing power" (Henderson, Artificial Intelligence, 63). CONDITION AND DETAILS: New York: Institute of Radio Engineers. 4to. Original printed wrappers with scuffs and edge wear; short closed tears at spine tips and on the contents page. Library stamp on front cover and contents page; no other library markings. Very good condition.

        My Brother Aquarius. Poems.

Nash Publications 1961 - FIRST EDITION, frontispiece repeating dustjacket design, light foxing to title-page with the odd spot further in, one page with a small scribble in red pencil, sliver of surface lifting to final text-page, pp. [viii], 62, 4to, original blue cloth lettered in gilt to upper board and backstrip, very light rubbing to extremities and a few indentations at head of lower board, dustjacket designed by Tennant with some light soiling to rear panel, very good. With a lengthy inscription in blue ink by Tennant across the front endpapers: 'For Carol Pennels, I think you are a true poet.' - Tennant goes on to enumerate the qualities he has discerned in the work she has sent to him, ending 'Poetry is an Essence of Experience. You are saving something precious from Oblivion. Very cordially yours, Stephen Tennant'. The inscription is written from Wilsford Manor and dated to October 1972. On the facing pastedown, Tennant has written his poem 'The soul of a wheel is the space between the spokes', an adaptation from the Chinese, along with a quotation from 'Romeo & Juliet' - attributed to 'W. Shakespeare? a Bacon? or Edward de Vere?'. Laid in at the front is a letter to the same recipient, presenting the book, from her Uncle John - who evidently worked for Tennant in some capacity, as the address at the head is the same. A charming presentation copy from the one-time socialite and then recluse, his aesthetic nature developing a mystical tone.

My Brother Aquarius (Signed With A Lengthy Inscription By The Author)

First UK and only printing published by Nash Publications in 1961. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Coloured frontispiece repeating dustjacket design. Light marks and rubbing to the board edges. Light foxing to the title-page with the odd spot further in. Creasing to some lower page corners. The flimsy paper WRAPPER (designed by Tennant) is complete and is in Very Good + condition. Some light soiling in places. Mild edge-wear with a 5cm closed tear to lower front spine fold. The wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. With a lengthy inscription in blank ink by Tennant across the front endpapers: 'For Diana Ogg, Hoping that the charms of prosody and ballad-making will continue to enthral her! - The magic of poetry is enigmatic, pungent, witty, wise and beguiling ~ Perhaps Diana is a poet herself?, yours Stephen Tennant, with cordial good wishes' . On the facing pastedown, Tennant has written three quotations from 'Shelley' and a "Sage'. A charming presentation copy from the one-time socialite and then recluse, his aesthetic nature developing a mystical tone.

The Worm And The Ring (Signed By The Author)

A First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1961.The BOOK is in near FINE condition. The binding is tight and the book is free from inscriptions and erasures. The text block is lightly toned but the pages are clean. The gilt titling on the spine is slightly dulled. The WRAPPER is complete and is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition. It has mild edge-wear to the upper spine and some mild rubbing to the corners. The pink lettering is faded to the spine. The spine is mildly toned with a little light staining to the lower spine edge.Small closed tear to the lower front edge and a small stain to the front cover within the black colouring. There is a mild vertical crease to each of the flaps. The condition of the wrapper is much better than usually encountered. The John Rowland designed wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival protector. The book has been Signed by Anthony Burgess to the title page.A very SCARCE early key BURGESS title with an interesting history:The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties.Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected.Heinemann agreed to 'amend all unsold copies of the book' (The Times, October 25, 1962) but actually pulped them.An extremely scarce title to find with such attributes. The first we have handled as such.
