        François Berthoud Facsimile..

4, 40 Bl., zahlr. farb. blattgrosse Abb., Kart., Tadell Text engl.

Jacqueline Kennedy Signed White House Print.

1961 - White House photographic print taken in 1961 by White House photographer Cecil Stoughton. Boldly signed by Jacqueline Kennedy at the lower left. Stoughton took multiple photos in front of the White House fountains on the South Lawn when developing the 1961 Christmas Print. The final Christmas print, which showed more ducks positioned closer to the photographer, is derived from a different photograph taken moments before or after this mock-up. Here, the ducks are positioned on the far side of the pool and the camera was positioned at a slightly different angle than that used for the final Christmas Print. Matted and framed with a full length printed portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy after a painting. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 31 inches. Rare and desirable. When John F. Kennedy was sworn in as president on January 20, 1961, 31-year-old Jacqueline Kennedy became the third youngest First Lady in American history. As a presidential couple, the Kennedys differed from the Eisenhowers by their relative youth and their relationship with the media. Historian Gil Troy has noted that in particular, they "emphasized vague appearances rather than specific accomplishments or passionate commitments" and therefore fit in well in the early 1960s' "cool, TV-oriented culture". The discussion on Kennedy's fashion choices continued during her years in the White House, and she became a trendsetter, hiring American designer Oleg Cassini to design her wardrobe. She was the first First Lady to hire a press secretary, Pamela Turnure, and carefully managed her contact with the media, usually shying away from making public statements, and strictly controlling the extent to which her children were photographed. Portrayed by the media as the ideal woman, academic Maurine Beasley has stated that Kennedy "created an unrealistic media expectation for first ladies that would challenge her successors." Nevertheless, by attracting worldwide positive public attention, the First Lady gained allies for the White House and international support for the Kennedy administration and its Cold War policies. Although Kennedy stated that her priority as a First Lady was to take care of the President and their children, she also dedicated her time to the promotion of American arts and preservation of its history. Her main contribution was the restoration of the White House, but she also furthered the cause by hosting social events that brought together elite figures from politics and the arts. One of her unrealized goals was to found a Department of the Arts, but she did contribute to the establishment of the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment of the Humanities, established during Johnson's tenure.         Typed Letter Signed about Noel Coward

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A brief typed letter signed from the great composer and lyricist to Albert "Doc" Sirmay, head of the music publisher Chappell and a close collaborator with Porter, thanking him for sending clippings and mentioning that he has sent a telegram to Noel Coward "for his opening" (of the 1961 musical Sail Away.) Dated September 30, 1961. 1 p. A few small stains, else fine. <br style=""><br>Composer, arranger and editor Albert "Doc" Sirmay was the music director of the leading music publishing firm Chappell. According to Mark Eden Horowitz, Sirmay can be considered a collaborator with Porter: he "worked closely with [Chappell's] roster of composer, including Kern, Gershwin, and especially Porter. Many of the published piano-vocal scores of standards of the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s owe their elegance, clarity, and playability to Sirmay. He could convert a lead sheet to a richly accompanied song; he could wed melodies to accompaniment figures to make the totality of a song playable on the piano; he was a master of chord voicings. Many of the Porter music manuscripts in both the Library and Yale collections are in Sirmay's clear and flowing hand." ("Cole Porter's Papers," in A Cole Porter Companion, p. 310.)<br style="">

        Stranger in a Strange Land

Putnam 1961 - A true first edition AND first printing of 'Stranger in a Strange Land' by one of the best science fiction writers of all time, Robert Heinlein. This book was published in 1961 by Putnam. All first print issue points are present. No indication of reprint on copyright page; C22 on page 408; correct first state dust jacket. Condition: the book is in excellent fine condition with only the slightest of shelf wear. Everything is clean, no annoying inscriptions of any sorts; no lean, no smudges; nice green top stain as called for; vibrant lettering on spine. The dust jacket is very good, it is NOT clipped and shows creases, close tears and minor chipping to extremities. Otherwise very good and protected in removable mylar. When you will be doing your research you will find a great many copies that have annoying inscriptions; some tape on board, smudges, tears etc. In comparison this is one of the nicest copies currently on the market. 'Stranger in a Strange Land' is next to 'Starship Troopers' Heinlein's best known and most popular novel. It won the 1962 Hugo Award. Heinlein is a science fiction legend together with Arthur C Clarke; Philip K Dick; Frank Herbert; and Isaac Asimov. His first editions will always be highly collectible. Heinlein won five Hugos and was nominated eleven times. No other science fiction author has matched that record to date. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Worm And The Ring

Heinemann 1961 - A First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1961. The BOOK is in near FINE condition. The binding is tight and the book is free from inscriptions and erasures. Mild bumping to the lower corners. The text block is lightly toned but the pages are clean with just some light finger marking to a very few pages. The gilt titling on the spine remains bright. Mild creasing to the lower corner tips of some pages. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. It has mild rubbing to the corners. The pink lettering is only lightly faded to the spine. The spine is only mildly toned with just a little light soiling to the lower spine edge. Small closed tear to the lower front spine fold .There is a mild toning to the edges of the flaps. The condition of the wrapper is far better than usually encountered. An exceptional copy. The John Rowland designed wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival protector. A very SCARCE early key BURGESS title with an interesting history:The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to 'amend all unsold copies of the book' (The Times, October 25, 1962) but actually pulped them. An extremely scarce title to find with such attributes. An excellent copy in a slightly rubbed and nicked jacket with a couple of small chips to the head of the gently sunned spine panel and a couple of closed tears to front panel and spine. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Everett Hoffman ? With all good wishes from a copywriter at McCall's to a copywriter at Cunningham & Walsh, and with the sincere hope that this book will give you some pleasure. Joe Heller November 24, 1961 New York". An early and unusually jovial inscription to a colleague in advertising, perhaps reflecting Heller's relief that he can quit his day job, dated within six weeks of publication. Towards the end of the book, three passages are scored in ink in the margin, possibly by Heller.

Less than six months after the end of his eight years as Vice President, Richard Nixon writes stockbroker Jack Dreyfus that he is "not interested in investing in so-called 'safe' stock … I prefer to make an investment involving risks and providing a consequently greater opportunity for capital gain…"

[California], July 12, 1961. 7.25" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ""Dick,"" 1 page, 7.25"" x 10.5"". [Los Angeles], July 12, 1961. To financier Jack Dreyfus, New York. On his engraved Richard Nixon letterhead. With the original postmarked envelope with Los Angeles return address. Fine condition. In part, ""As I discussed with you on the phone a week or so ago, I have been reviewing my financial situation over the past few weeks and have reached the conclusion that I should make a substantial investment in stock which would provide me an opportunity for capital gain. Present indications are that from the advance payment I am receiving from my book and from income from my law practice in excess of my living expenses I will have at least forty or fifty thousand dollars available for investment in stock at this time.""As I told you, I am not interested in investing in so-called 'safe' stock with a substantial guarantee of dividend income. Because of my capital position and the high income I will be receiving from earnings over the next five years, I prefer to make an investment involving risks and providing a consequently greater opportunity for capital gain. Recalling our several conversations with regard to Polaroid … explore to possibility of my purchasing a call on a thousand shares of Polaroid stock…"" Read the entire letter in the image above.Financier Jack Dreyfus (1913-2009) founded the brokerage house Dreyfus & Co. in 1947; it developed into the Dreyfus Fund. In 1964, Life magazine called him the “Maverick Wizard Behind the Wall Street Lion,” in reference to the emblem of his fund and its aggressive marketing. Dreyfus, it said, was “the most singular and effective personality to appear in Wall Street since the days of Joseph Kennedy and Bernard Baruch.” His paternal grandfather was a first cousin of Alfred Dreyfus, the protagonist of the late 19th-century anti-Semitic scandal known as the Dreyfus Affair. Dreyfus sold his mutual fund company in 1970 and established the Dreyfus Health Foundation to pursue other medical applications for Dilantin which had cured his depression in the 1960s. In 2000, Dreyfus said that an account in The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon by Anthony Summers (New York: Viking, 2000) that he gave Dilantin to Richard Nixon in 1968 was correct. Dreyfus said he gave Nixon a bottle of 1,000 capsules of 100 milligrams each ''when his mood wasn't too good,'' and later gave him another bottle of 1,000 capsules."

Projet pour un édifice public empaqueté. Photomontage No 1. - Originalfotocollage. Rückseitig bezeichnet und signiert.

Paris, octobre 1961 - 24,7 x 18,2 cm. Vergleiche Schellmann/Bernecke 20.

        The Worm And The Ring

A First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1961. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
