The Secret of Red Gate Farm Nancy Drew Mystery Stories

Grosset & Dunlap, 1961. Hardcover. This book is in very good condition. Pages are clean and tight and binding is in near fine condition. There is a previous owner's name (Claudia Pfeiffer) hand written in the book. SUMMARYNancy and her friends, Bess and George, meet Joanne Byrd on a train ride home. Joanne lives at Red Gate Farm with her grandmother, but if they do not raise enough money to pay the mortgage, they will soon lose the farm! Nancy, Bess, and George decide to stay at Red Gate for a week as paying customers. Soon, they learn about the strange group of people who rent a cave on the property. They describe themselves as a nature cult called the Black Snake Colony. Nancy investigates their group and helps to uncover a ring of counterfeiters in town!AUTHOR NOTESCarolyn Keene was the pseudonym that Mildred Wirt Benson and Walter Karig used to write Nancy Drew books. The idea of Nancy Drew came from Edward Stratemeyer in 1929. He also had other series, that included the Hardy Boys, but he died in 1930 before the Nancy Drew series became famous. His daughters, Harriet and Edna, inherited his company and maintained Nancy Drew having Mildred Wirt Benson, the original Carolyn Keene, as the principal ghostwriter. During the Depression, they asked Benson to take a pay cut and she refused, which is when Karig wrote the books.Karig's Nancy Drew books were Nancy's Mysterious Letter, The Sign of the Twisted Candles, and Password to Larkspur Lane. He was fired from writing more books because of his refusal to honor the request that he keep his work as Carolyn Keene a secret. He allowed the Library of Congress to learn of his authorship and his name appeared on their catalog cards. Afterwards, they rehired Benson and she wrote until her last Nancy Drew book (#30) was written in 1953, Clue of the Velvet Mask.Harriet and Edna Stratemeyer also contributed to the Nancy Drew series. Edna wrote plot outlines for several of the early books and Harriet, who claimed to be the sole author, had actually outlined and edited nearly all the volumes written by Benson. The Stratemeyer Syndicate had begun to make its writers sign contracts that prohibited them from claiming any credit for their works, but Benson never denied her writing books for the series. After Harriet's death in 1982, Simon and Schuster became the owners of the Stratemeyer Syndicate properties and in 1994, publicly recognized Benson for her work at a Nancy Drew conference at her alma mater, the University of Iowa. Now, Nancy Drew has several ghostwriters and artists that have contributed to her more recent incarnations.(Bowker Author Biography)

Steps Toward Artificial Intelligence" in Proceedings of the IRE, Vol. 49, No. 1, 1961, pp. 8-30

Institute of Radio Engineers, New York 1961 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PRINTED WRAPPERS OF MINSKY'S "SEMINAL" WORK ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (MIT Biography). In this paper, Minsky outlines the basic features of AI programs that today still form the basis of artificial solving, including searching and pattern-recognition techniques. This work established symbol manipulation - divided into heuristic search, pattern recognition, learning, planning, and induction - to be at the center of any attempt at understanding intelligence (A.C.M. Statement of Minsky's achievements). Marvin Minsky was a pioneer of robotics and tele-presence who designed and built some of the first visual scanners, mechanical hands with tactile sensors, one of the first LOGO 'turtles', and their software and hardware interfaces - works that influenced many subsequent robotic projects. This 1961 work by Minsky surveyed and analyzed what had been done before and outlined many major problems that the infant discipline of artificial intelligence would later need to face. This paper "reveals a remarkable catalogue of techniques that had been developed in less than a decade's worth of research, [including] "basic forms of search, evaluation, and learning, but also the beginnings of a model of intelligence and a way that programs could begin to 'understand' their own behavior. Minsky ended the paper with a look toward a future where time-sharing and multiprocessing programs would provide easier access to a growing amount of computing power" (Henderson, Artificial Intelligence, 63). CONDITION AND DETAILS: New York: Institute of Radio Engineers. 4to. Original printed wrappers with scuffs and edge wear; short closed tears at spine tips and on the contents page.         Through a Glass Darkly [SÃ¥som i en spegel] (Original art style poster for the 1961 film)

Stockholm: Svensk Filmindustri, 1961. Original Swedish illustrated poster for the 1961 Swedish film. The first entry in Bergman's legendary and highly personal "Faith" trilogy, which won the director his second Best Foreign Film Oscar, and defined what came to be called his "chamber dramas." A young woman is released from a mental institution, and moves to an island where her family resides to recover. But she finds little solace, and no support from her father, her husband, or her brother. A landmark film, in that it is not so much an examination into mental illness as a perspective of on a private world from a mind that has departed day to day concerns. 27.5 x 38.5 inches. Lightly restored, linen-backed and rolled. Near Fine.
