        Anarchy - First Series

Anarchy - First Series complete, issues 1-118, 1961-1970. Original card covers, each 32pp. Staples generally rusted, minor rubbing to extremities, spines sometimes lightly faded, one or two with previous owner's names in, occasional light foxing to edges of text blocks. Number 7 has a bookplate to reverse of upper cover, obscuring some of the 'other issues' text, top edge stained of numbers 83, 89, 104 and 110, covers lightly stained of numbers 107, 115 and 118, number 3 has had two of the articles listed on the upper cover 'boxed' in pen, but they are generally fairly bright and clean. Number 105 has the standard typographic cover as usual (not the suppressed graphic cover). A complete set of the first series of Anarchy, in original wrappers. Most issues are on a specific theme examined from an Anarchist perspective, ie. Crime and Punishment, India, Automation, Poverty, Spain, Education etc. Comfortably the best English language Anarchist periodical ever produced, it includes work by Ward, Bookchin, Walter, Chomsky and Goodman amongst many others. The cover designs, mainly by Segar, but also by others, were replicated recently in a book, edited by Poyner, called 'Autonomy', which also has a very useful index to 'Anarchy'

The Children's Hour (Original photograph for the 1961 film)

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1961. Vintage oversize, double weight, borderless still photograph from the 1961 film, a remake of Wyler's 1936 film "These Three," both based on the 1934 play by Lillian Hellman, about two female teacher's at an all girls school accused of having an affair. Nominated for five Academy Awards. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his ASMP rubber stamp on the verso. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 13.5 x 9.25 inches (34 x 23 cm). Near Fine.

We Bombed in New Haven. WITH: Autograph and typed letters signed, discussing Catch-22

1961 - HELLER, Joseph. We Bombed in New Haven. WITH: Autograph letter signed. WITH: Typed letter signed, discussing Catch-22. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1968. Octavo, original maroon cloth, original dust jacket. Two leaves of Heller's letterhead (7-1/4 by 10-1/2 inches), one typed and signed on recto, the other in autograph manuscript and signed on recto. Housed all together in a custom clamshell box. $7800.First edition of Heller's anti-war play produced during the Vietnam war, inscribed by him, "To Walter ""-, With admiration and sincere good wishes." Heller sent this inscribed book to the recipient after he had written to Heller praising Catch-22 and implying that it was an inspiration for his decision to move to Canada to dodge the U.S. military draft. With a lengthy typed letter signed by Heller from 1969 to the recipient praising him for his courage and discussing the composition of Catch-22, as well as an autograph letter signed from 1999 to the same recipient.Joseph Heller's first novel quickly became a classic of anti-war literature. So effective were Heller's humor and insight that the title passed cleanly into the English language as a precise evocation of an unwinnable situation. "When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and the chaos of war. By the mid-1960s, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictment of war" (Books of the Century). The recipient of this inscribed first edition, Walter Krajewski, wrote to Heller in January of 1969 from Toronto, praising Catch-22, asking about the composition of the chapter entitled "The Eternal City," mulling over his own decision to leave the United States (and thus avoid the draft), defending Heller's decision to work for Time magazine against charges of 'selling out,' discussing anti-establishment sentiments prevalent in Canada at the time, and praising Heller for finding a way to make a positive contribution to culture and society. (Krajewski's original letter is included.)In May of 1969, Heller replied to Krajewski with a lengthy typed letter in which he discusses the draft and his own son (who would have been 13 at the time), comments on "The Eternal City," and remarks on his years at Time magazine and during the war. The letter reads in part: "It was both an honor and a sadness to hear from someone who did leave the country rather than participate in this war; I like to think that I would do the same if faced with a similar choice, although I'm not sure I would have the strength of character to do so, and I will certainly encourage my own son to leave when he is old enough to be threatened with military service, and leave with him if he wishes me to". The chapter THE ETERNAL CITY, if I remember correctly, was one of the easiest of all to write, the reason being, I think, that by that time in the book there was little artifice and more of a need for direct expression. By that time, too, the time spiral had sort of straightened itself out and there was a direct continuity of narrative". I'd not heard before that I was accused of selling out". If anything, I bought out, not sold out: I wrote most of the novel while I worked there and left the whole God damned industrial world altogether shortly after it was published. And, surprising as it may sound, I enjoyed myself immensely while I worked there, just as I enjoyed myself, I am almost ashamed to admit, for most of my service in the army." Heller mentions that he is sending this copy of We Bombed in New Haven under separate cover, "on the chance that you will enjoy that too," and closes by writing, "I wish you will be able to come back soon."In 1999 Krajewski wrote another letter to Heller, with which he enclosed a copy of Heller's letter from 1969 by way of re-introducing himself (Krajewski's 1999 letter is not included), prompting Heller to pen the following letter: "It was good to receive your letter, with a copy of my own [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Steps Toward Artificial Intelligence" in Proceedings of the IRE, Vol. 49, No. 1, 1961, pp. 8-30

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PRINTED WRAPPERS OF MINSKY'S "SEMINAL" WORK ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (MIT Biography). In this paper, Minsky outlines the basic features of AI programs that today still form the basis of artificial solving, including searching and pattern-recognition techniques. This work established symbol manipulation - divided into heuristic search, pattern recognition, learning, planning, and induction - to be at the center of any attempt at understanding intelligence (A.C.M. Statement of Minsky's achievements). Marvin Minsky was a pioneer of robotics and tele-presence who designed and built some of the first visual scanners, mechanical hands with tactile sensors, one of the first LOGO 'turtles', and their software and hardware interfaces - works that influenced many subsequent robotic projects. This 1961 work by Minsky surveyed and analyzed what had been done before and outlined many major problems that the infant discipline of artificial intelligence would later need to face. This paper "reveals a remarkable catalogue of techniques that had been developed in less than a decade's worth of research, [including] "basic forms of search, evaluation, and learning, but also the beginnings of a model of intelligence and a way that programs could begin to 'understand' their own behavior. Minsky ended the paper with a look toward a future where time-sharing and multiprocessing programs would provide easier access to a growing amount of computing power" (Henderson, Artificial Intelligence, 63). CONDITION AND DETAILS: New York: Institute of Radio Engineers. 4to. Original printed wrappers with scuffs and edge wear; short closed tears at spine tips and on the contents page.
