Arendt, Hannah (David Riesman)
University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1958. First edition of this work of striking originality. Octavo, original cloth. From the library of David Riesman, with his stamp to the front free endpaper. Riesman was a sociologist, educator, and best-selling commentator on American society and author of the classic work The Lonely Crowd: A Study of the Changing American Character. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Includes a unsigned letter by Riesman to the author of a review of the book. A nice example with noted provenance. In her study of the state of modern humanity, Hannah Arendt considers humankind from the perspective of the actions of which it is capable. The problems Arendt identified then-diminishing human agency and political freedom, the paradox that as human powers increase through technological and humanistic inquiry, we are less equipped to control the consequences of our actions-continue to confront us today. Fermor, Patrick Leigh
The First UK Printing published by John Murray, London in 1958. The BOOK is in Near Fine condition with light pushing at the upper spine end. A hint of toning to the text-block. Light offsetting to the end-papers. Gilt titling and decoration remain bright. The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is neatly clipped but the price remains on the lower flap. Light edge-wear at the spine tips. Mild toning to the spine, rear panel and flap edges. The 'Book Society Choice' wraparound Band is complete with one mild crease to the front flap portion. The John Craxton wrapper design looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been inscribed by the author in the year of publication to the front blank end-paper: 'To Lady Constance Milnes-Gaskell, wiht many greetings, from Patrick Leigh Fermor'. The inscription is dated 'Nov. 1958' to the lower page, with the intervening space occupied by Fermor's drawing of the symbolic eye that is the centre of the wrapper design, beneath which he has written (in Greek) the question 'where is Alexander the Great?' -asterisking with the reference 'answer on p.187', whereupon he has marked the relevant passage. The recipient was a notable society personage, Woman of the bedchamber to Queen Mary from 1937-53 and Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent until her death in 1960. Very Rare First Edition Black Mormon Doctrine 1958 Nice Condition Scarce W/Cover. Shipped with USPS Priority free First Edition Black Mormon Doctrine 1958. Book is in really good condition, tight binding, clean text and great cover! See pics for details, but this book is in great condition, provenance written on frontis ex-Libris sticker and points of true church on pastedown. This is stored on a heavy brodart cover. i was able to get cover off front to take pic but hesitate to remove underling found at "church of the devil" This is the first edition where McConkie made numerous remarks that had to be taken back by the Mormon church in later editions. A few examples: blacks will never get the priesthood and the Catholic Church is the great and abominable church of the devil. [Attributes: First Edition]

Norman Mailer
New York: 1958 signed and inscribed first edition, Rinehart and Company, Inc. (NY), 6 x 8 1/2 inches tall black cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket (in a clear archival sleeve), 721 pp., all housed in a black archival lined case customized with the title. Rubbing and and edgewear to covers, with fraying to tips. Cracking to backstrip - a 3 3/4-inch crack along the right lower portion of the spine, then extending 2 3/4 inches diagonally through the middle of the title along the backstrip. A bit of cracking between the half title and title pages at the top, but the binding is quite firm. Very light shadow to two interior pages where a slip of paper may have been laid in. Otherwise, apart from very slight age toning, and a couple of creased page tips, a very good true first edition of this seminal novel, with a great inscription and signature by the author, in a very good first issue dust jacket, all handsomely housed in a custom black, felt-lined clamshell case with title embossed to front and gilt-lettered spine. With a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA, the leading autograph authentication service. Mailer's half title inscription to Eliot, Maine's Harold P. Merry (1921-2008), reads, 'with apologies - after / all, a first edition / should not have to wait. / Cheers / Norman Mailer / Sept. '94' First impression, with circle-R Rinehart logo colophon on copyright page. Unclipped first issue jacket with $4.00 price and Stanley Rinehart blurb to flaps has only minor edgewear, with a 1-inch piece of tape to the upper edge of the rear cover verso, and a 2 1/2-inc … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIBSON, Richard (Peter Taylor
Anthony Blond, 1958. Hardcover. First edition. Octavo. 172 pp. Very good with some age-toning and scattered light stains to the endpapers, else near fine, in a near fine dustwrapper with some light soiling to the top edge, and light age-toning to the inside panel. Inscribed and Signed by Gibson in a very neat hand on the title page: "For Peter Taylor, with best wishes and many thanks, Richard Gibson, Paris September 1958." Peter Taylor was one of America's best short story writers, and winner of the 1985 PEN/Faulkner Award and the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Richard Gibson was awarded the John Hay Whitney Fellowship in 1951 to pursue writing this novel. He was drafted in the army, served in Europe, and by the late 1950s had become a member of the group of African-American expatriates centered in Paris around Richard Wright and James Baldwin. In a sequence of events in 1957-58 that became known as the "Gibson Affair," the CIA allegedly employed or otherwise utilized Gibson to promote pro-French sympathies, specifically regarding Algeria's fight for independence. This was dramatized by Richard Wright in his unfinished last novel, *Island of Hallucination* (see Michel Fabre's *The Unfinished Quest of Richard Wright*). A very nice association between Gibson and Taylor. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

O'Hara John
Random House, 1958. First Edition. Laid in is a typed letter signed by O'Hara, addressed to "Bill and Frank," on stationery from Long Island, NY. The letter is dated June 20, 1960 (in pencil), and in it O'Hara expresses his dislike of the public remarks made by Mark Robson, the director of the 1960 film, though Robson's name is not mentioned. It seems Robson "sounded off" in the Long Island Tribune (June 19, 1960), and O'Hara took offense, and was soon "in touch with the studio to see what can be done about shutting him [Robson] up." O'Hara also invites the addressees to a private screening of the film. Very Good plus or better in a Very Good plus or better dust jacket. Spine ends lightly bumped, a few leaves with tiny corner creases, and lightly rubbing overall. A small chip at the jacket rear flap fold, and light rubbing overall, else Near Fine. Letter Near Fine. Jacket design by Philip Grushkin. An attractive copy with an interesting letter connecting the novel to the film. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]
