        Spells and Philtres

Sauk City, WI: Arkham House. Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1958. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. SIGNED EDITION. (519 copies printed) This book is in Fine condition and has a Very Good+ to Near Fine- condition. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some very beginning foxing to the endpapers. This copy has been signed by the author, with an inscription, on the front endpaper. The dust jacket has foxing to the rear cover along with some light ground-in dirt and some beginning bumping. "In 1920 Smith composed a celebrated long poem in blank verse, The Hashish Eater, or The Apocalypse of Evil which was published in Ebony and Crystal (1922). This was followed by a fan letter from H. P. Lovecraft, which was the beginning of 15 years of friendship and correspondence. With studied playfulness, Smith and Lovecraft borrowed each other's coinages of place names and the names of strange gods for their stories, though so different is Smith's treatment of the Lovecraft theme that it has been dubbed the "Clark Ashton Smythos." " "This is the first new book from the pen of the distinguished poet and short story writer, Clark Ashton Smith, in seven years. These poems by one of the foremost fantaisistes among contemporary writers will enchant and delight the lover of poetry and the macabre, for they are new ventures into the mystical half-world which beckons forever at the edge of awareness." "Clark Ashton Smith (January 13, 1893 – August 14, 1961) was a self-educated American poet, sculptor, painter and author of fantasy, horror and science fiction short stories. He achieved early local recognition, largely through the enthusiasm of George Sterling, for traditional verse in the vein of Swinburne. As a poet, Smith is grouped with the West Coast Romantics alongside Ambrose Bierce, Joaquin Miller, Sterling, Nora May French, and remembered as "The Last of the Great Romantics" and "The Bard of Auburn"." ; Signed by Author .

        Histoire de l'Europe

1958. (EUROPE) PIRENNE, Henri. Histoire de lÂ’Europe. Brussels: La Renaissance du Livre, (1958-62). Four volumes. Folio (10 by 13 inches), publisherÂ’s original full green pebbled morocco, marbled endpapers, uncut and largely unopened. $1500.Lavishly illustrated limited edition of PirenneÂ’s renowned history of Europe, letter “M” of only 26 lettered copies printed on Vergé dÂ’Arches paper. Illustrated with hundreds of in-text and full-page heliogravures, and 20 mounted photographic plates printed in color.Belgian historian Henri PirenneÂ’s renowned European history extends from the early medieval barbarian invasions of Rome to the 16th century. He composed this remarkable work while a prisoner of the Germans during World War I—having participated in acts of non-violent resistance—a feat made even more remarkable considering that he wrote entirely from memory. Only upon his death in 1935 did his son Jacques discover the manuscript and decide to publish it and continue the work his father began. Henri PirenneÂ’s history constitutes the first volume of this four-volume folio set; Jacques added three more volumes to bring the history to the end of World War II and the beginning of NATO. First published in 1936. Text in French. Gift inscription on half title of Volume I dated 1969.One leaf of text in Volume IV (pp. 491-92) torn, with loss. Fine condition.

Are there any? A chess problem book. (Signed)

Stroud News and Journal [1958], Stroud, Glos - Duodecimo in green cloth with gilt spine and front board. pp 149. Signed and inscribed by the author on the ffep: "To A. F. Downey Jun. [?] with / best wishes from / Gerry Anderson / March 24/59." The first published work on Kriegspiel problems, which is still widely cited and recognized today among problemists. In a July 2006 article, the Problemist called it "a strong candidate for the title of 'most original chess problem book ever published. The work was apparently held in high esteem by Bobby Fischer as well: a member of the British Chess Problem Society once wrote to Anderson, saying: "I write because I must have another copy of Are There Any? I had solved only up into the thirties when last night I incautiously carried it down to the Marshall Club to show it to Jack Collins. Then, seeing it in Jacks hands, Bobby Fischer pounced upon it in great excitement and before the evening was over the two of them had so made it theirs, were so comically oblivious of the mere owner, that I hadnt the heart to explain that I had brought it to show, not to bestow." The Australian-born Anderson was a pilot in WWI in the 88 Squadron and later became a diplomat in the Queens service, but was reknowned in chess circles as a master composer. Anderson was also reputed to be the last person to have played Alexander Alekshin in tournament play in Lisbon (1946) before the latter's untimely death. Front board has several abrasive scuffs to cloth and there is a miniscule tear to the top of the ffep (not affecting signature), else very good. A very scarce book. OCLC lists only 9 copies in libraries worldwide. Betts, 39-21. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Cost of Capital, Corporation Finance and the Theory of Investment. IN: American Economic Review

1958. First Edition . MODIGLIANI, Franco and MILLER, Merton Howard. ""The Cost of Capital, Corporation Finance and the Theory of Investment."" IN: American Economic Review, Volume XLVIII, Number 3, pp. 261-297. Menasha, Wisconsin: American Economic Association, June, 1958. Octavo, original printed orange paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4500.First printing of Nobel Prize-winner Franco Modigliani and Nobel Prize-winner Merton Miller's landmark theory of corporate finance.""Up to the middle of the 1950s, the literature of corporate finance consisted mainly of descriptions of methods of institutions. Theoretical analysis was rare. It was not until Franco Modigliani and Merton Miller, in 1958, presented their now-famous theorem, and at about the same time James Tobin (Nobel Prize 1981) and others started to develop the theory of portfolio selection, that a scientific theory emerged concerning the connection between financial market characteristics and the financing of investments, debts, taxes, etc. Once established, this theory developed very rapidly"" (Nobel Media). The Modigliani-Miller theorem is largely responsible for modern thinking on capital structure. It holds, in the absence of certain financial interference—taxes, bankruptcy costs, agency costs, and asymmetric information—and in an efficient market, the value of a firm is unaffected by how a firm is financed. Thus, setting aside those financial disturbances, it does not matter if a firm's capital is raised by issuing stock or selling debt or, indeed, by what a firm's dividend policy is. Hence, the Modigliani-Miller theorem is often called the capital structure irrelevance principle. Interestingly, the core of the Modigliani-Miller theorem is adaptable. For example, when the interest on debt is tax deductible, the value of a company increases proportionally. The source of additional value is due to the amount of taxes saved by issuing debt instead of equity. This type of flexibility to the theory has made Modigliani-Miller one of the most important theories in corporate finance. Modigliani was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize in Economics for this and for his ""pioneering analyses of saving and of financial markets."" Miller, in turn, was co-awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Economics for separate work ""in the theory of financial economics"" with his work with Miller cited for ""fundamental contributions to the theory of corporate finance."" Toning to spine and bottom half inch of front wrapper, creasing to corner of back wrapper. A near-fine copy. Rare.

        Playback.

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1958. FIRST EDITION, ADVANCE BINDING, previously unrecorded. Octavo. pp.[6]; 208. In publisher's GREEN cloth tooled in silver to the spine, top edge tinted blue. Black dust-wrapper, designed by Patricia Davey. A crisp, fine copy of the true first printing of the final Philip Marlowe story, which precedes the US first by some 3 months. The present example is a previously unrecorded variant binding of green cloth with an alternative font and swelled rule blocked on the spine and with a different, smaller pictorial monogram device stamped at the foot. The book is trimmed a little shorter than the trade binding and given a blue topstain. We are in no doubt that this is an advance issue in a certified library binding using the Hamish Hamilton brasses with permission. It would not have been commercially available and is produced in-line with Heinemann's early binding for Graham Greene's 'The Heart of the Matter and Cape's advance bindings for several of Ian Fleming James Bond first editions. The material used is binder's cloth, the book is trimmed with a topstain and original tooling is used. Cape typically produced 300 advance bindings (Gilbert) and it is conceivable that Hamish Hamilton's figure would be similarly low. An important find. Bruccoli [A11.1a]. Gilbert p.622. Steinbrunner and Penzler pp.275-276. See also Quayle, Haining.

Les Américains. Photographies de Robert Frank. Textes réunis et présentés par Alain Bosquet

Paris: Robert Delpire, 1958. 172, [2] S., Or.Pbd. mit einer Deckelillustration, kl.8°, quer. Encyclopédie essentielle, vol 5. Parr/Badger I, S. 247.

Fine photo by Cecil Beaton, signed and dated on the mount, (The Queen Mother, 1900-2002, Queen of George VI)

1958 - showing her full length, wearing a beautiful be-jewelled crinoline and a tiara, holding her gloves in front of her, standing next to a large jardiniere full of hydrangas, 10" x 8", Buckingham Palace, slightly stained by former sellotape marking, annotated on the verso Beaton's famous photographs of Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1939 established a new romantic image for the monarchy. He subsequently photographed her five times between 1947 and 1957 and deliberately tried to re-create the spirit of the 1939 image - the be-spangled crinoline dress with lots of diamond jewellery. Presented to Fred Campbell, transport Officer for A.C.T. in charge of Her Majesty's Transport by Her Majesty the Queen Mother at Canberra on the occasion of the Royal Tour, February 1958.

Autograph letter Signed in full to Major Sir Ralph Dolignon FURSE (Evelyn, 1903-1966, Author)

1958 - (1887–1973, civil servant) explaining that he is "writing the life of Ronnie Knox and shall be most grateful if you could give me any reminiscences of the year when you shared with him at the Old Parsonage. The names of his fellow lodgers which I have, are your own, D. R. Brandt, W. G. Fletcher, H. K. Marsden. The last two are familiar to me. Can you tell me anything of Brandt? Were there any others in the house? Am I right in supposing that during his last year Ronald was working hard for Greats and had given up most of his other activities? Did he see as much as ever of Julian Grenfell, Shaw-Stewart & Horace after they moved into digs? I have a lot of material on Ronald's first three years. The last is a blank and I shall be most grateful for any details .", 2 sides 4to., Combe Florey house, nr Taunton, 9th January Sir Ralph was the only child of John Henry Monsell Furse, sculptor. In 1914 he married Margaret Cecilia (1890–1975) , daughter of the poet Sir Henry Newbolt. He was on active service throughout the war with King Edward's Horse, and was wounded in 1917. He won the DSO and bar and was twice mentioned in dispatches. They had two sons and two daughters. Both the daughters married Sir Laurence WHISTLER (1912-2000, poet and artist). After the death of his first wife, the actress Jill Furse, he married her sister Theresa. Evelyn Waugh was a close friend of Ronald KNOX (1888-1957, Priest, theologian and author of detective stories) and his literary executor. His biography 'The Life of Ronald Knox' appeared two years after his death. Waugh was a devout Catholic and fervent admirer of Knox's works. Unpublished.

        The Edge of Tomorrow

New York: Farrar, Strauss and Cudahy. 1958. Reprint. Slight age-toning on the boards, small new bookstore label, else near fine in good or better dustwrapper with a chip on the front panel and some splashmarks on the spine. Full-page Inscription by the author: "To the Kingston Trio with best wishes from Dooley, and a thunder of thanks from high valley. Tom Dooley." Envelope laid in from a hotel in his home town of St. Louis, also Signed by Dooley. Account of the Roman Catholic humanitarian and bestselling author Thomas Dooley establishing a hospital in Laos, five miles from the border with Red China. Dooley had also done humanitarian work in Vietnam in the early 1950s, where his two stated purposed were to fight disease and Communism. Reportedly upon his death he was considered for Sainthood in the Catholic Church. To those too young to recall, the Kingston Trio had a huge #1 hit in 1958, the same year as this book, with the traditional American song Tom Dooley, based on the true story of a North Carolina man who reputedly murdered his true love and was hung. The real Tom Dooley died of cancer in 1961, at the time he was one of the best-known people in the world, but has since fallen into obscurity. A curious and amusing association. .

INGMAR BERGMAN'S ANSIKTET [THE MAGICIAN] (1958)

Svensk Filmindustri 1958 - Vintage original 39 x 27 ¾" (100 x 70 cm.) one sheet poster, Sweden. Max von Sydow, Ingrid Thulin, dir: Ingmar Bergman; Svensk Filmindustri. An extremely rare Swedish poster for this early Swedish film classic by Bergman -- a semi-horror film (about a charlatan magician who may or may not have any true powers) which had an enormous impact when released in the US and UK soon after its Swedish debut (I personally saw it as a kid, and it scared the hell out of me when I first saw it!). The original Swedish title translates as "The Face", and it was under that title (or a translation of it) that it was shown in many countries, including the UK and Italy, but in the US it was given the slightly more provocative title The Magician. On linen, with the most trifling professional touch-ups at folds and margins, overall a superb example (and the only one which I have ever had), FINE

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (1958)

MGM 1958 - Vintage original 30 x 40" (75 x 100 cm.) quad poster, UK. Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Judith Anderson, Madeleine Sherwood, dir: Richard Brooks; MGM. The highly adult filming of Tennessee Williams' work was paramount in the loosening of the strict censorship code in film making, as were all films of Williams' work during this period. It was an actor's film, with each star perfectly cast to their role. If there were any question of it, Elizabeth Taylor was now grown up and a fine actress in her mature roles. It is difficult to think of anyone else as Maggie the Cat. Here she is in a provocative pose with the famous gold iron bed which was used in a number of MGM films and touted at their 1971 auction. In the UK the film received what was then an "X" certificate -- for adults only. Poster is on linen with only minor touch-up to the folds and smoothing of a few inter creases. NEAR FINE
