1958 FAREWELL TO ARMS - ORIGINAL DIALOGUE & CUTTING CONTINUITY - 18 REEL MOVIOLA SCRIPT / SCREENPLAY - Selznick Studios

Selznick Studios, Los Angeles 1958 - A FAREWELL TO ARMS (the 1958 Motion Picture) - COMBINED DIALOGUE AND CUTTING CONTINUITY SCRIPT - "In Cinemascope". Continuity Script dated January 10th, 1958. Length of the film 13,677 Ft. 8 Frs. A SELZNICK STUDIOS FILM of ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S NOVEL. Printed gray paper covers, 8.5" x 11", side-bound with 3 brass brackets, pages numbered consecutively and by reel, 238 pages / Reel 18 Page 5. Pages printed on one side only. The front and rear covers are stained from a spill, the first 2 pages are also heavily stained, the next ten or so pages have staining to their top margin, then the stain disappears. The covers are well worn, have a couple 3" closed tears, lots of edge chips and closed edge tears. Internally, after the staining on the beginning pages, all the pages are bright and clear. SCARCE Reel by Reel Dialogue and Cutting Continuity to A FAREWELL TO ARMS, the film based on Hemingway's Masterpiece. Continuities (Continuity Scripts) were an important part of the film industry in its early days. They were typically created after a film was "in the can", but before it was released, in order to create a written "copy" of the film. A good "Continuity" provided a transcription of every shot and scene in detail as it occurred in the finished film, something that could obviously not be known until a film was completed. Continuities were created both for copyright protection and for a "record" of a film. Many early films easily degenerated, and many others were wiped out to recover their silver. A true continuity script was therefore often the only archived, scene-by-scene, record of many early films. Provenance of the late Peter Howard, and his now shuttered Serendipity Books, Berkeley, California. Peter was a long time member, and at one time President, of the Antiquarian Bookseller's Association of American. He was very well known in the antiquarian book arena. Years ago Peter bought much of the archives of Selznick Studios, This continuity script is from that archive. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1958 - Jonathan Cape. 1958. DW. The wrapper is sl. nicked at the head and tail of spine and corners with a tiny 1.5cm long x 2mm portion missing along top of front panel, close to spine. Mani (Signed And Doodled By The Author To Theodore Stephanides)

The First UK printing published by John Murray in 1958. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little pushing at the spine ends. Light fading to the spine which has slightly encroached onto the front cover. Boards lightly marked places. Gilt tilting and motif remain bright. Light toning to the text block. The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition and is clipped (as commonly found) with the publisher's revised price present. A little minor rubbing and toning to the spine and rear cover with a few nicks. The John Craxton designed wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The book has been INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the first blank end paper: 'To Theodore Stephanides, with many greetings from Patrick Leigh Fermor, London, April 1964'. The author has also doodled a copy of the eye and the greek wording (relating to page 187 : 'Where is Alexander The Great...') from the frontispiece design. There is also the name in pencil of "T.Stephanides' to the upper front end paper. Theodore Stephanides was a Greek poet, author, doctor and naturalist. He is best remembered as the friend and mentor of the famous naturalist Gerald Durrell, featuring in many of Durrell's books including 'My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives', Durrell's brother Lawrence's 'Prospero's Cell', and Henry Miller's 'The Colossus of Maroussi'. He was a close friend of Leigh Fermor. A polymath, Stephanides was respected as a scientist and doctor, and acclaimed as a poet in both Greek and English, and translated a sizeable body of Greek poetry to English: notably a significant body of work by Greek poet Kostis Palamas and the Greek near-epic work Erotocritos. He was also a noted biologist and scientist who has three species named after him. He also wrote a definitive biological treatise on the freshwater life in Corfu. His autobiographical account of the Battle of Crete - 'Climax in Crete', and his fictitious account of Corfu and the Ionian Islands - 'Island Trails were widely read', but are now sadly out of print. A significant association copy and very scarce with such attributes.

John Updike. The Carpentered Hen and Other Tame Creatures. New York: Harper and Brothers, [1958]. First edition, first printing. "First edition B-H" stated on copyright page. The authors first book. This is truly a one of a kind. It is one of only 2,000 copies of the first edition, and has an inscription by Updike where he thanks the inscription recipient for her championing of famed British author, Henry Green, who Updike said "his novels made more of a stylistic impact upon me than those of any writer living or dead" in an introduction to an edition (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics USA, 1993) of three of Green's novels (Living, Loving and Party Going). The inscription reads "to Mrs. Price/ with thanks for the/ hospitality in Liverpool/ and the championship/ of Henry Green/ from Mrs. Pennington's/ son-in-law John Updike". The book has gray boards backed in black cloth with publisher logo stamped at front board and titles in gilt at spine. Touches of toning to boards. Front and rear hinge repaired with resulting adhesive residue. Mild toning to jacket with touches foxing at rear panel. Minor wear at edges and spine ends.

The Civil War SIGNED IN VOLUME ONE

New York (1958 - 63 - 74): Random House. First Edition. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Very Good. First printings, all in first issue dust jackets. SIGNED by the author on verso of half-title of volume I. Volume I, Ft. Sumter to Perryville, with "11/58" on rear flap of dust jacket, price is clipped; volume II, Fredericksburg to Meridian, with date of "11/63" on front flap of dust jacket, price is clipped; volume III, Red River to Appomattox, with date of "11/74" on rear flap of dust jacket and price of $20.00 on front flap. A handsome set, books are fine and bright, with no markings of any kind; dust jackets are very good to fine. Shelby Dade Foote (1916-2005) rarely signed his books. Most signed copies are signed on a page tipped-in by the publisher - copies signed in the book itself, as is the present copy, are quite scarce on the market. This set of 3 volumes was issued over a 16 year period and was well-received and much respected by Civil War buffs. Interest in this work zooked to the stratosphere, when in 1990, Ken Burns' eleven hour documentary was shown on PBS of "The Civil War."
