        The Dharma Bums

New York: Viking, 1958. FIRST EDITION of Kerouac's highly influential sequel to On the Road. "The core of the Beat writers coalesced for a moment in 1956 in San Francisco, and Jack Kerouac captured it in his novel The Dharma Bums (1958). Its central character is the poet and Zen student Japhy Ryder (Gary Snyder), whom the narrator Ray Smith (Kerouac) idolizes for his 'Zen lunatic' lifestyle, combining Zen discipline and aesthetics with freewheeling sensuality. One scene in the novel recounts the Six Gallery poetry reading, at which Snyder, Philip Whalen, Michael McClure, and Philip Lamantia read, and Allen Ginsberg's incantation of Howl did, indeed, scream for a generation about the agonies of 1950s fear and conformity (and fear of conformity, and conformity as a form of dealing with fear). The Dharma Bums, coming fast on the heels of Kerouac's bestselling On the Road (1957), drew a huge readership of the young and aspiring hip, who saw in Ryder/Snyder a new template for living, a chance to go beyond the confines of suburban expectations" (Micozzi, Fundamentals of Complementary and Alternative Medicine).New York: The Viking Press, 1958. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. Book near-fine; very good dust jacket with some of the rubbing almost ubiquitous with this jacket, tape reinforcements and a small amount of light dampstaining to verso (not visible from the front of the jacket). Very Good / Very Good.

        L'envers et l'endroit

Gallimard. Later edition of 550 numbered copies on vélin labeur paper.Publisher's paper boards with an original design by Paul Bonet.Precious and beautiful inscription from Albert Camus to René Char : " à vous cher René, ces confidences, et une amitié du même cœur, fraternellement. / Albert Camus. / Juin 59"Very nice copy of exceptional provenance. The friendship between Albert Camus and René Char is among the most touching and most fruitful in French literature. There was nothing obvious to bring together the Algerian journalist and author and the Provencal poet, much less to suggest a mutual affinity. Camus had not come across Char's poetry and Char had no taste for novels, apart from those of Maurice Blanchot.Nonetheless, it is through their respective works that the two artists found out about each other and developed a mutual respect. So - before Camus and Char actually met - they had met through Caligula and Hypnos - both illustrating the poet's responsibility in the face of the violent world."So in our darkness Beauty has no given space. All that space is for Beauty" (Char, Feuillets d'Hypnos). It is this mutual need for Beauty as a political response to the outrageousness of ideologies that united the two artists at the end of the war. Catalyst to their friendship, this first "acknowledgment" inaugurated a twelve-year correspondence, during the course of which their mutual affection grew and revealed an artistic convergence:  "I believe that our brotherhood - on all levels - goes even deeper than we think and feel" (Char to Camus, 3 November 1951)."What a great and profound thing it is to detach oneself bit by bit from all that and all those who are worth nothing and to find little by little over the years and across borders a community of spirit. Like with many of us, who all at once feel ourselves finally becoming of 'the few'" (Camus to Char, 26 February 1950).These 'few' are a reference to a quotation from Gide: "I believe in the virtue of small numbers; the world will be saved by a few," whom Char and Camus tried to bring together in establishing the Empédocle review: "It is perhaps time that 'the few' Gide talked about came together," as Camus wrote to Guilloux in January 1949. They published writing by Gracq, Melville, Grenier, Guilloux, Blanchot, Ponge, Rilke, Kafka, and so on. However, internal dissension soon engulfed the review and they abandoned the project together.  Their friendship, however, remained unblemished. The two men met regularly in Provence, where Char was from and - thanks to him - Camus' adopted home. They showed each other their manuscripts and confided in each other with their doubts: "The more I produce the less sure I become. Night falls ever thicker on the artist's path, his way. Eventually, he dies completely blind. My only hope is that there is still light inside, somewhere, and though he cannot see it, it continues to shine nonetheless. But how can one be sure? That is why one must rely on a friend, one who knows and understands, one who is walking that same path."   They inscribed works to each other (the reprints of Feuillets d'Hypnos and Actuelles) and in each new copy wrote inscriptions in which they both reinforced their comradeship in arms and in spirit. "to René Char who helps me live, awaiting our kingdom, his friend and brother in hope," (manuscript of The Plague)."For Albert Camus, one of the very rare men I admire and love and whose work is the honor of our times. René Char," (Fureur et mystère)"[to RENÉ CHAR], fellow traveler, this guidebook to a mutual voyage into the time of men, waiting for noon. Affectionately, Albert Camus," (Actuelles I)"For Albert Camus, whose friendship and work form a Presence that illuminates and fortifies the eyes," (Art bref)."Oh if only poets would agree to become again what they were before: seers who speak to us of all that is possible... If they only gave us a foretaste of virtues to come. Nietzsche.""To René Char, brother of the undersigned, with whom he has been there all the way, with admiration and affection from his friend / Albert Camus."This copy was doubtless inscribed in October 1953 along with the other "bound" copies (the Prassinos binding - cf. letter of the 23 October 1953).Camus had already presented Char with a first copy of this ode to his homeland, first published in 1939, well before their meeting: "To René Char, to bring back for us those years in which I did not know him, but which already held within them the reasons for our friendship."This second inscription on "these first Nuptials," underlines how this youthful work which celebrates the "nuptials of man with the world," is a precocious revelation of what they would go on to call their "fraternity with the planet".On Camus' death, Char published La postérité du soleil, the work they wrote together in 1952, an homage to their friendship and to that "hinterland which is the image of our own, invisible to others."A very attractive copy with an exceptional provenance.         One Ear" (Bullfight Series)

Paris: 1958. Oil on canvas. 32 x 23.5 inches. 81 x 60 cm. Signed and dated lower right. It has his name B. Childs and address 4, rue de l'université on the verso of the canvas and the notation "7.61." Small scratch in the image. There is a label on the "museum grade honeycomb mounting panel": Conservation of Art LLC. 24127 (Childs 1567) . From the collection of the late San Francisco artist Vesta Kirby (1936-2016) who was a designer at SOM and the studio and restoration assistant and to Gordon Onslow Ford (1981-1992). Bernard Childs, son of Russian immigrants, was born in Brooklyn/New York in 1910. In the daytime, he earned his living doing occasional jobs and at night he attended Kimon Nicolaides' drawing lessons at the Art Students League. A severe financial situation forced Childs to abandon his artistic work. He did not restart drawing until his military service during world war II. Around 1947 he attended Amédée Ozenfant's class in New York. During the 1950s and 60s he often travelled, lived in Italy, Paris and Japan for a longer period. In the 1950s he developed an abstract picture language, in which he worked with archetypical signs and symbols and with the methods of surrealistic automatism. Since 1955 he also attended to printed graphics, which accompanied his painting. Childs used electrically powered tools to work on his plates. This way he lent velvet-like structures and a vivid, skillful line direction to his prints. Between 1966 and 1977 he alternately lived in Paris and New York. Bernard Childs' artistic work was extraordinarily complex.

Roemsche historie oft gesten, . . . nu erstmael in onser Nederlantscher spraken ghedruckt.Antwerp, (colophon: printed by Jan Grapheus and sold by Jan Gymnicus), August 1541. Folio. With the title-page and each of the 3 part-titles in a frame built up from 4 woodcuts (part 2 with different blocks than the others), well over 200 woodcuts in the text (including repeats). Late 17th-century calf, richly gold-tooled spine.

      - Belg. Typ. 1958; BMC STC Dutch, p. 123; Funck, p. 401; Machiels L404; USTC 403306; not in Bibl. Belg. First Dutch edition of Livius's classic history of Rome, beautifully illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, many measuring about 12×14 cm. Written about AD 10, it is the most extensive work to survive from classical antiquity, and the present translation for the first time acquainted a wider audience in the Low Countries with the "knightly, manly deeds" (as the title puts it) of classical heroes. The woodcuts provide a fascinating view of clothing, architecture, military and other equipment, boats and sometimes trades and other human activities. The view they provide is not of classical Rome, however, but of the early sixteenth-century, for the artists made very little attempt at historical accuracy. A few showing battles, sieges, councils, visitations, etc. are used many times to illustrate different events, but others more specifically reflect the subjects of the text. So we see a hundred-and-twenty-foot dragon, the death of Archimedes, the use of elephants in battle, the burning of books (very topical in 1541!) and many other lively scenes.Owner's entry on title-page, partly erased. Leaves *2-5 misbound, title-page and leaf 207 detached, water stains, affecting the text in the first and last few quires. Front hinge and head and foot of spine damaged. Overall in good condition. An influential and beautifully illustrated edition of a great classic.

Walt Disney: the Art of Animation. The story of the Disney Studio contribution to a new art.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1958 - Quarto. Original illustrated printed boards, grey cloth spine, illustrated endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black flat back cloth solander box with Mickey Mouse blocked to front. Mild bumping to corners, minor nick to tail of spine. An excellent copy in bright jacket with chipped and creased extremities, lightly stained rear panel, and a touch of foxing to flaps. Illustrations and photographs in colour and black and white throughout. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Walt Disney on the verso of the front free endpaper, "To Vita Best Wishes Walt Disney." Additionally it is inscribed by Roy Disney and contains the signatures of more than 100 other people in the Walt Disney Studio, including seven of "The Nine Old Men" who were the key animators of the studio, this copy with the signatures of Eric Larson, Frank Thomas, Milt Kahl, Ollie Johnston, Marc Davis, and Woolie Reitherman. The signatures range from the studio nurse to directors of animation. This book seems to have been given as a retirement/going away gift from the studio to Vita Victoria, whom worked in the ink and paint department, which was at the time where the majority of females worked in animation, some artists refereed to it as the "Finishing School" of hand drawn animation. The paint and ink department was responsible for transferring drawings onto celluloids and giving them colour before being sent off to be photographed. A wonderful title which illustrates the family atmosphere the studio was noted for. Truly an exceptional Disneyana piece. [Attributes: First Edition]

Paris: Librairie Plon, 1958 - Octavo (196 x 135 mm). Contemporary red quarter morocco, spine titles gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge speckled black. Spine lightly faded and scuffed, a couple of tiny stains to front board, spotting and slight dampstaining to bound-in wrapper and following blank leaf. A very good copy. Illustrated with black and white plates and diagrams in the text. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title to his close friend, composer René Leibowitz, "Pour René Leibowitz, en toute amitié, Claude Levi-Strauss". From the beginnings of their friendship in the late 1940s Lévi-Strauss and Leibowitz kept a copious correspondence and inspired each other to create outside their respective lines of work.         Granite and Rainbow

London: The Hogarth Press 1958 - First edition, first printing. Personal copy of author's sister Vanessa Bell, with her ownership signature "Vanessa Bell" in blue ink to the front free endpaper, and with the front panel of the dust jacket designed by Bell adhered to the front pastedown and the dust jacket spine adhered to the front free endpaper. Publisher's royal blue cloth, lettered in gilt; white dust jacket with decorations in light blue and black. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the edges, a hint of toning to the spine, a faint hint of foxing to the page edges, otherwise bright and clean pages. Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Granite and Rainbow is the fourth and final posthumously published collection of Virginia Woolf's essays, discovered by B. J. Kirkpatrick (Woolf's bibliographer) and Dr. Mary Lyon (author of Virginia Woolf as Critic). The text is divided into two sections: "The Art of Biography," which includes "Money and Love," "Poe's Helen," and "Waxworks at the Abbey," and "The Royal Academy;" and "The Art of Fiction," which includes "Hours in a Library," "Impassioned Prose," and "The Anatomy of Fiction." The title Granite and Rainbow is a reference to the life of an artist. Specifically, Virginia identified Vanessa's nature as having a complex combination of vulnerability and granitic strength. During her lifetime, Woolf wrote many articles on writing and literature for serial publications, many of which were published in her The Common Reader series (1925 and 1932). After Virginia's death, her husband Leonard Woolf published her remaining essays, but managed to miss a few, which, after being discovered by Kirkpatrick and Lyon, were published together in this volume. Like many of her published works, Granite and Rainbow was edited by her husband, published through her own press, and wrapped in a dust jacket designed by her sister, all of which reinforce the highly personal nature of Woolf's writing and creative process.         The Drover's Cook and other Verses

Sydney Australia: F H Johnston, 1958. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. A genuinely rare 1st edition of Australian poetry with dedication to this bookseller's father. Dust jacket is in fair condition and is browning to the spine with small losses. The original jacket is a form of tracing paper with a cobweb pattern visible when held to the light. Exceptionally scarce jacket is fragile and has been placed in a loose protective sleeve. The book is well preserved with no major faults. The book is inscribed to Noel Miles with my compliments Tom Quilty. Noel was a geologist for a mining company that worked the Hall's Creek - De Grey area in the 1950's. Thomas John Quilty (1 April 1887 - 1979) was an Australian station owner, pastoralist, philanthropist, and bush poet. To this day he still holds the record for the largest freehold land acreage in Australia's history; over 3 million acres for a single property. In total, he controlled over 4.5 million acres of land. The book also comes with a newspaper clipping (Obituary) from a WA newspaper. "WA Cattleman dies at 93".
