Mani. Travels in the Southern Peloponnese; [with] Roumeli, Travels in Northern Greece

London: John Murray [through 1966], 1958. Two First Impressions of "two of the best travel books of the century." (Financial Times) Octavos in correct pictorial dust jackets by John Craxton. Mani: xiii,[5],320pp, with frontispiece and title-page vignette by Craxton, map of the southern Peloponnese by John Woodcock, and 26 photographs by Joan Eyres Monsell (the author's wife); Mani: Publisher's scarlet cloth, spine and upper cover stamped gilt, price-clipped (rather aggressively, catching just the corner of the final letter of the photographer's name). Near Fine, pages clean and binding secure, neatly erased name from front fly leaf, two corners lightly bumped; Near Fine jacket, spine panel very gently faded and top tip lightly rubbed. Roumeli: viii,248pp, with inserted double-page map of northern Greece on heavy grey stock by Craxton and 20 photographs by Monsell. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped gilt, dust jacket priced 30s. Near Fine or better (spine-tip cloth sunned, name neatly inked on front fly leaf ), very lightly read, gilt bright; Near Fine jacket (spine panel moderately tanned, tips lightly rubbed and nicked), front panel still bright and vibrant. All in all, an attractive set. ¶ During the Second World War, Leigh Fermor was stationed in Albania, Greece, and occupied Crete, where, disguised as a shepherd in the mountains, he helped organize the resistance. After the War he traveled in the West Indies and then settled in Greece. Mani, an exploration of that country's southernmost promontory, one of the most isolated regions of the world, is considered by some his finest book. ("Almost every page has its own literary tour de force, often with intimidating displays of learning and research mixed with fantasy, imagination and acute descriptions of the scene itself." Robin Hanbury-Tenison, Geographical: 76; pp. 42-49). It was followed by a sequel, Roumeli (the ancient name for the lands from the Bosphorus to the Adriatic and from Macedonia to the Gulf of Corinth) explores Northern Greece and its minority communities, taking the reader among Sarakatsan shepherds, the monasteries of Meteora and the villages of Krakora, among itinerant peddlers and beggars. Leigh Fermor was widely regarded as Britain's greatest travel writer during his lifetime, and he was once described as "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Near Fine / Near Fine.

[Paris:] Librairie Plon,, 1958 & 1973. 2 works, octavo. Un: uncut and partly unopened in original paper wrappers, spine and wrappers lettered and ruled in black and red. With 6 cuttings stapled and laid in. Deux: original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket and 6 documents laid in. Un: 4 double-sided photographic plates, numerous illustrations to the text. Deux: 13 diagrams to the text. A few neat pencil and ink annotations to contents. Un: spine sunned, wrappers creased, extremities nicked, hinges cracked but firm. Deux: spine ends rubbed, corners gently bumped, a few small nicks to dust jacket extremities. Both very good copies. Scarce first edition, first impression, presentation copies, inscribed by the author to fellow social anthropologist and ethnologist Sir Raymond Firth on the half-titles, "A Raymond Firth, avec l'amitié de Claude Lévi Strauss" and "To Raymond Firth, with warmest regards, Claude Lévi Strauss". Anthropologie structurale and Anthropologie structurale deux present a collection of foundational essays written over the course of nearly two decades and which were key to the development of the theories of structuralism and structural anthropology. Firth (1901-2002) was a lecturer at the London School of Economics and became particularly well known for his study of Maori culture. Lévi-Strauss admired Firth's work and contributed to the papers read at the celebration of Firth's life and works in 2004. The six cuttings laid in to Anthropologie structurale contain reviews of ethnographic, economic, and anthropological works by Raoul and Laura Makarius, Serge Latouche, and Bernard Delfendahl, as well as the front cover for the 1973 catalogue for Editions Anthropos. The five documents laid in to Deux are: a) Three-page signed typewritten draft of Firth's review of D. M. Goodfellow's Principles of Economic Sociology (1939), published in the Royal Institute of Philosophy's journal (1941), annotated by Firth. b) Four-page printed review of La Pensée sauvage by Nur Yalman from the American Anthropologist. c) Note card from Lévi-Strauss to Firth dated 15 May 1968. d) Note card from Firth to unknown recipient, dated 24 May 1977. e) Note on paper, possibly in Firth's handwriting, discussing the translation of the title of Lévi-Strauss's La Pensée sauvage. f) Note on yellow paper, possibly in Firth's handwriting, laid in to p. 139, on the distinction between formalism and structuralism.

Twizzle's Adventure Stories (The Lovable TV Character)

Birn Brothers Ltd, London 1958 - RARE title. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated in colour throughout. Includes full-colour frontispiece plate. Charming 1950's illustrations by F.H. Woof. Apart from the full-colour covers & frontispiece, all illustrations are b&w with one additional colour added (either blue, red, green, or orange). The volume contains a total of 18 short adventure stories (some rhyming), plus 3 pages with puzzles, & the dice game. The children's TV show "The Adventures of Twizzle" ran from 1957 to 1959. There were a total of 52 episodes. This book was published in 1958, in the middle of the show's run. "The Adventures of Twizzle (or simply Twizzle as it was known in some territories) is the very first television show produced by AP Films and specifically Gerry Anderson (creator of the 'Thunderbirds' series), after being approached by author Roberta Leigh (who also co-produced with Anderson) and her colleague Suzanne Warner. Twizzle - from whom the series gets its name - is a boy doll with the ability to extend (or 'twizzle') his legs and arms. He wears a pixie-like hat and has a cat companion known as 'Footso'. Although a boy, he was voiced by a woman, Nancy Nevinson who also narrated the series. The series follows his adventures as he uses his abilities to get out of trouble. In all, 52 episodes were made in black and white, although only the first, Twizzle and Footso, is believed to survive and was included as an additional feature on the boxed set of the entire series of Space Patrol released in 2003." Wikipedia notes that "there was a British annual brought out in 1960 by Birn Brothers Ltd, called More Twizzle Adventure Stories which is now very rare", however no mention of this particular earlier title published in 1958. Printed in Great Britain. Bound in publisher's original bright full-colour pictorial white laminated boards, with one-colour pictorial endpapers. No dustjacket issued. Slight handling wear, very mild toning to boards, former owner's ink inscripton to verso of ffep, minimal penciling within, light marginal foxing (due to cheap paper), otherwise overall a very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 93pp. VERY RARE & collectible. Breakfast at Tiffany's; A Short Novel and Three Stories

New York: Random House, 1958. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good +. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall, 187 p. First edition of this iconic book turned into a film starring Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn's portrayal of Holly Golightly as the naive, eccentric cafe society girl is generally considered to be the actress' most memorable and identifiable role. Hepburn regarded it as one of her most challenging roles, since she was an introvert required to play an extrovert. Hepburn's performance of its theme song "Moon River" helped composer Henry Mancini and lyricist Johnny Mercer win an Oscar for Best Song. In 2012, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry (N.B., from Wikipedia). ***DESCRIPTION: Gold cloth boards with a black label on the spine containing the title and author in gilt, publisher also in gilt at tail of spine, cream endpapers, top of text block stained light blue; octavo size (just under 8" tall), pagination: (i-viii), (1)-178, author bio (179). Dust jacket shows original price of $3.50, designed by Ismar David in orange with white and black lettering on front, drawing of author on back. ***CONDITION: Volume is very good overall, with a corners straight and unrubbed, a strong, square text block, solid hinges, and the interior is clean and bright; there is some very light soiling to the boards and a bit of flaking to the spine label; the only markings we see is a prior owner name to the front paste down written in a flowing hand. The unclipped dust jacket is very good plus with the ubiquitous fading to the spine, light overall soiling, very minor edgewear and a few tiny chips, see pictures and please request more if needed. ***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The Temple of King Sethos I at Abydos (complete in 4 vols.) [INCLUDING 231 PLATES]

London/Chicago: The Egypt Exploration Society/University of Chicago Press, 1958. First edition. Hardcover. g- to vg+. Elephant Folios. Vol.1: (xi) 40 plates. Vol.2: (ix) 46 plates. Vol.3: (xi) 65 plates. Vol.4: (xviii) 80 plates. Vol.1 still retains its brown paper dust jacket. Tan cloth boards with gilt-stamped hieroglyphic illustrations on the front covers, and gilt lettering on the spines. This is the complete four volume visual survey from the site of the King Sethos' (Seti I) temple at Abydos. The acclaimed publication remains a key resource for the study of the temple and of Egyptology in general, to this day.The Temple (also known as The Great Temple of Abydos) is recognized as among the most significant structures in the area, as was primarily built as a memorial to King Seti I (father of Ramses II), and a place of reverence for the lineage of the past Pharoahs. The temple is well known for the "Abydos King List", a list of rulers of the principle dynasties, carved onto a wall. The site includes seven chapels dedicated to the worship of the pharaoh and the six gods Ptah, Re-Horakhty, Amun-Re, Osiris, Isis and Horus. These chapels provide an invaluable resource for the study of Ancient Egyptian religion as they contain the first complete form of the Daily Ritual, which was performed throughout Egypt during the the pharaonic period. The reliefs on the temple walls are acclaimed for their detail, technique and high artistic accomplishment. Originally conceived by the Egyptian Exploration Society as a purely photographic survey detailing the content of the of the temple, it soon became clear that Amice Calverley's work in reproducing the hieroglyphs, merited a much more substantial publication. An advanced multi-step process was utilized by Calverley, that included hand tracing of the hieroglyphs from original photographs by Herbert Felton, and then competing them on site. The resulting four volumes are a testament to the tireless work she undertook during 1928-1929. The set includes:Volume I: The Chapels of Osiris, Isis and HorusVolume II: The Chapels of Amen-Re', Re'-Harakhti, Ptah, and King SethosVolume III: The Osiris ComplexVolume IV: The Second Hypostyle HallThe publication includes a total of 231 plates, gorgeously printed in both b/w and colored photogravure (each measuring approximately 23x18.5") reproducing the hieroglyphs in detail, and of the architecture of the site itself. Other plates are illustrated reproductions of the hieroglyphics, printed lithographically. Also included are some detailed architectural plans providing insight into the spacial layout of the temple site. Many of the plates are double pages. Plate 11 of vol.2 is a large three page fold-out photographic reproduction in color, measuring approximately 19x44". The initial pages of each volume feature introductory text by renowned Egyptologist and linguist Sir Alan H. Gardiner. His work complements the visual work done, and gives historical, linguistic, spacial and technical context to each of the plates. This text is following by a detailed list of plates contained in each volume.Dust jacket of volume 1 with some closed tears, and with light rubbing and chipping to the extremities. Bindings of some volumes with some spotting, water staining, smudges, and/or scratches to the boards. Light bumping to some corners. Covers of vol.4 heavily water stained, with abrasions and some rubbing to the gilt-stamped illustrations. Some spotting to the edges of some book blocks. Interior with some sporadic light foxing throughout, mostly to the margins of the pages. Text, photographs, and illustrations mostly unaffected. Book blocks tight. Bindings in good- to very good. Interiors in good+ to very good+ condition overall.

A Collection of Books Inscribed to Sylvester L Vigilante with Related Correspondence

Near Fine/Near Fine. A collection of 72 books and related correspondence almost all Inscribed by their authors to Sylvester L. Vigilante, Head of the American History Room located in Room 300 at the New York Public Library, where he apparently provided dozens of authors with invaluable research and support for their writing. Overall very good or better with some sunning and general wear including scattered chips, tears and rubbing, some lacking dust jackets.Vigilante, who coauthored with his wife Edna Vigilante the nonfiction children's book, We Were There at the Opening of the Erie Canal (1958), had a magisterial depth of knowledge of American history, particularly of the frontier West, as is evidenced in the books in the collection in both the printed acknowledgments, in the written personalized inscriptions in the books, and in the accompanying correspondence. Vigilante started at the NYPL in the early part of the last century (there exists a New York Times article from 1909 mentioning him as a young assistant who discovered a theft from the library), and retired more than 50 years later in the early 1960s. Apparently as much as he was appreciated for his research help, he was also cherished for his company and friendship: many of the letters urge him to visit, to dine, or to drink with the various authors. While he corresponded widely with authors nationwide, he apparently was the center of the circle of Western authors who both lived on the East Coast, and haunted Room 300. He was chosen the first "Sheriff" (or chairman) of the "New York branch (or "Corral") of The Westerners," a nationwide group of Western history aficionados that still exists today. The books, and in many cases accompanied by letters, include a wide range of authors from Western novelist and historians to children's book writers, folklorists, poets, and satirists. Among the more notable writers represented in this collection are Western author and screenwriter, Homer Croy; Newbery Award-winning children's author, Jean Lee Latham; playwright and African-American activist, Shirley Graham [du Bois]; New Yorker contributor and literary critic, Will Cuppy; novelist and biographer, Mari Sandoz; "the vagabond poet" Harry Kemp; folklorist, Benjamin A. Botkins; and historian, Stewart H. Holbrook.A very interesting and illuminating example of the utility of libraries and the importance of librarians in preserving documentation that fosters culture and which in turn is synthesized into books An extensive list is available upon request.
