Presentation copy; signed and inscribed by Steinbeck on the front endpaper: "For assorted Barclays(?)/ with so many/ thanks for everything/ John Steinbeck/ The Cottage Discove, Bruton/ Somerset 1959." Steinbeck took a long break to move to Somerset, England from late 1956-1959 to gain greater inspiration for hus manuscript, Morte d'Arthur. Steinbeck's stay at the Cottage Discove allowed him to focus on his interest in medieval literature and the writings of Sir Thomas Malory.         DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON

1958. [inscribed by Hemingway] With Eighty-One Reproductions from Photographs. London: Jonathan Cape, (1958). Original maroon cloth, with dust jacket. First British Edition, later (ninth) impression -- of the book first published in 1932. This is Hemingway's great non-fiction account of the art of bull-fighting -- comparing it in some ways to the art of writing...~Here is described and explained the technical and emotional appeal of the bull-fight, "the emotional and spiritual intensity and pure classic beauty that can be produced by a man, an animal, and a piece of scarlet serge draped on a stick... Woven into the book there are several short stories -- one of them, "The Natural History of Death," among the finest that the author has done; there is a chapter on writing in America that contains his literary credo, stated fearlessly and with smashing directness... [from the jacket]~This volume is in just-about-fine condition; the jacket, showing a bull on both covers and spine, is relatively whole but does have reinforcing paper behind the spine ends and front upper edge.~The front free endpaper of this copy is inscribed and signed by Hemingway -- "To Gerda and Hermann Meissner | with all good wishes always | Ernest Hemingway | 26/6/59 | Madrid". We do not know who Gerda and Hermann were (there is a Gerda Meissner who was an actress / voice performer, and there was a Hermann Meissner who was an artist in South America, and another who was an industrialist in Berlin, but we do not know if any of these met Hemingway). However, what a time and place for Hemingway to inscribe his book about bullfighting! -- for it was "The Dangerous Summer" of 1959. During that summer Hemingway followed the bullring exploits of Antonio Ordonez (who had been a factor also in THE SUN ALSO RISES), and also of Luis Miguel Dominguin: in their competition against each other for the claim of best bullfighter, each was gored at least once. Life Magazine commissioned Hemingway to write about this -- which he did in late 1959 / early 1960, with a condensed version appearing in that magazine in late 1960. It was not until 1985 that the full manuscript of THE DANGEROUS SUMMER was published as "Hemingway's last book.

Couleur, amour. 13 aquarelles, gouaches, lavis de Marc Chagall

      P. Au vent d'Arles, Ny graphic society, 1958. Couleur, amour. 13 aquarelles, gouaches, lavis de Marc Chagall. Préface de Jean Cassou. P. Au vent d'Arles, Ny graphic society 1958. in folio en ff, chemise à rabats illustrée. Tirage à 320 Moulin Richard de bas. Procédé Daniel Jacomet. Chagall did not make many pochoirs. For those who don't know what the technique means: it's a manual reproduction method, in which a hole is made in a plate, which is filled with colour, mostly by brush. One plate for each colour. In this way the pochoir is built up. In the case of Couleur Amour these are reproductions of original aquarelles and gouaches, in a very high quality. There is a watermark in the paper that says: "Ceci est une reproduction", followed by Chagall's signature.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Set of nine preliminary drawings for The Rabbits' Wedding

n.d. [1950s]. Original Illustrations. Near Fine. Original Illustrations. Nine delightful original preliminary illustrations for The Rabbits'; Wedding, published in 1958. A collection of adorable rabbits in various poses, drawn in black and white in pencil on thin paper. All are initialed by Williams and are in very good to fine condition. Garth Williams (1912-1996) was one of the foremost illustrators of the twentieth century. In addition to this book, he is known for his illustrations for many classic children';s books, including Charlotte';s Web, Stuart Little, the Little House series, and Bedtime for Frances. He also illustrated many Little Golden books. The Rabbits'; Wedding created a controversy in many places in the South when it was published because it depicts the marriage of a white rabbit and a black rabbit. It was perceived as somehow supporting inter-racial marriage, rather than as a book about "soft furry love," to quote Mr. Williams. Despite the initial controversy, the work has endured as a beloved children';s book. ORIG/121211.

Appointment with Dishonour [Signed by William H. Gage, Jr. and by George Seferis]

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1958. First edition. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing -- which preceded the UK edition, in a Very Good, bright, attractive, dust jacket (short closed tear where the upper front panel meets the spine panel, tiny hole near spine tail, some general wear), INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY WILLIAM GAGE TO NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page as follows: "For George S.____________ / with esteem and / admiration / Bill Gage", and further INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS to fellow author Rex Warner on the front free endpaper as follows: "Rex Warner [underlined] / George Seferis [in Greek, followed by a 4-line poetic inscription in Greek ending with an ellipsis and after which Seferis has drawn 5 stacked curved lines]. The novel dramatizes the Cypriot Revolution against British occupation of Cyprus (a chaotic period during which many Cypriots sought the incorporation of Cyprus into Greece and which, in 1955 gave birth to the violent pro-Enosis movement known as the EOKA whose military wing, led by George Grivas, sabotaged military installations, ambushed military convoys and patrols, and assassinated British soldiers and local informers.) George Seferis first visited Cyprus in 1963 and immediately fell in love with the island. As an important Greek Diplomat who ultimately became Ambassador to the UK, Seferis spent much time and effort seeking a resolution of the Cyprus question, investing a great deal of effort and allowing his personal views to intrude on his diplomatic efforts. Also one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. British author Rex Warner, to whom Seferis has inscribed this novel, was Seferis' close friend and frequent translator. In addition to their deep relationship as friends, each man held the other in high regard, and Warner's excellent translations of his work were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize. Both authors were fascinated by Cyprus as, clearly, was Gage. Copies of this novel are quite uncommon, and signed copies are as rare as hen's teeth. Of course, books signed by George Seferis are far from plentiful to the market, and copies of this novel signed by Seferis, who was deeply interested in the subject matter of this work, are rare indeed. A Very Good + copy of this scarce novel centered around the Cypriot Revolution, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY WILLIAM H. GAGE, JR. AND BY GEORGE SEFERIS. RARE.

        Il Gattopardo.

Milano, Feltrinelli, 1958.In-8° (205x127mm), pp. 332, cartonatura editoriale. I Contemporanei", n. 4. Gambetti/Vezzosi, p. 919. Spaducci, p. 292.
