Tel-Aviv/Jerusalem: Massadah Publishing Co. Ltd., [1958]. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine without dustwrapper, as issued. Large quarto (8-3/4" x 11-1/4") bound in original cloth with the name of the owner, General John H. Hilldring, stamped in gilt on the front cover. Text in French and English. Preface by David Ben-Gurion. Illustrated with photographs in black-and-white and in color. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in English on the half-title page by Israel's first prime minister: To General/John H. Hilldring/in friendship/D. Ben-Gurion/Jerusalem/5.6.58." Not only is this inscribed while Ben-Gurion was in office, it is also inscribed to an important figure in Israel's early history. General John Hilldring was the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Occupied Areas during World War II and was responsible for organizing military governments for countries to be liberated or conquered. Hilldring recommended Colonel David "Mickey" Marcus, a Jewish officer who had been under his command, to Ben-Gurion. Marcus, under the name of "Michael Stone," designed a command structure for Israel's new army and wrote manuals to train it. As a result of his efforts Israel, when it declared independence and the Arab armies attacked in May 1948, defended itself successfully. In gratitude, Ben-Gurion made Marcus the first general in the army of Israel since Judah Maccabee nearly two thousand years ago. He was accidentally killed at the age of 46 by a Jewish sentry six hours before a United Nations negotiated cease fire began. The film CAST A GIANT SHADOW was based on his life. Ben-Gurion said of him, "He was the best man we had.

Signed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper, above the "Four Oaks Farm" bookplate of film producer Stanley and Doris "Dodo" Meyer. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and scuffed price-clipped dustwrapper which has several short tears and is browned and spotted to the rear panel. Housed in a quarter black morocco clam shell box with raised bands and gilt lettering to the spine. ------- This is the only example of a James Bond book we have encountered where the author has signed with his formal signature of "I. L. Fleming". ------ Provenance: From the library of Stanley and Dodo Meyer. In 1956 Stanley Meyer, a producer at Warner Brothers in Los Angeles, had expressed an interest in buying an option on Live and Let Die and Moonraker. At the time of Doctor No's publication he was producer and co-owner of the legendary Television show Dragnet, the most successful police series on US television. Meyer was also the chairman of Filmaster Ltd., which helped to produce such popular early U. S. television series as "Pete Kelly's Blues," "Gunsmoke" and "Have Gun Will Travel.".

Dr. No (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1958, 1958. First Impression, Second State. Octavo. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards, silver titles to spine, in pictorial dust wrapper designed by Pat Marriott. Internally clean and bright, wrapper a touch toned to backstrip, minute wear to spine ends. Near fine. This issue with the 'Dancing Lady' design on cloth. Filmed by Broccoli/Saltzman in 1962, and with a John Barry soundtrack, this was the one that started it all and introduced the world to Sean Connery... Many of the now familiar elements appeared in this first entry of the series: M, Moneypenny, Felix Leiter, Q/Major Boothroyd, SPECTRE, the Walther PPK, a Casino and a Vodka Martini! The plot was simple and the movie was low-key and down to earth; there were no overblown gadgets to save the day, only Bond's cunning and intuition. This made it a more realistic film and more like Fleming's novel; a first-rate thriller. Gilbert A6a (1.3).

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy,. [1958]. cloth-backed boards.. Owner's signature and October 1958 date on front free endpaper. Top. edges of front and rear boards faded, a very good copy in about good. dust jacket with wear at edges, chips from head and heel of spine. panel, corner tips worn, small abrasion to rear panel, small tape. ghost to front flap. Books signed by Jackson are uncommon. (#141156). First edition. Signed on the front free endpaper by Jackson. THE SUNDIAL, "one of the most bizarre works in Jackson's oeuvre, seems to have been a prelude to WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE: the Halloran family becomes convinced that the rest of the world is going to end, and the narrative tone suggests that this belief might in fact be correct; the novel is occupied with the family's preparations to continue life after the rest of humanity has ceased to exist. Both these novels, as well as a number of short stories -- especially the celebrated 'One Ordinary Day, with Peanuts' (1955) -- display the misanthropy that is a central element of Jackson's work, and one which she conveys with consummate skill ... All Jackson's work -- with the exception, perhaps of THE BIRD'S NEST, a clumsy novel about multiple personality -- is subtle, powerful and flawlessly written; it reveals Jackson's keen insight into human personality and human society and her cynical, even jaundiced view of the world and its occupants. She has left a legacy of complex, richly textured horror writing that requires little or no bloodletting for its haunting effectiveness." - S. T. Joshi, Pringle (ed), St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost & Gothic Writers, p. 292. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 4-156. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 4-120. Winter list, p. 269.

Buenos Aires: Colombo, 1958. Quarto. 32pp. From an edition of 52 copies, this is one of thirty-two copies printed on Ingres. An elegantly-printed bilingual edition of Keats's Odes, in English and Spanish, each with a full-page lithograph by Raúl Veroni of the poem's subject. The first illustration is signed in pencil by the artist. The collection includes such poems as "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "To a Nightingale," with English and Spanish version of the poems opposite each other on facing pages. Veroni collaborated with the prominent Argentinean publisher Francisco A. Colombo for many years, beginning in 1937 when he was still a student at the National Academy of Fine Arts. The experience prepared him well to open his own graphic studio in the 1970s. Bound in off-white printed wrappers, with original glassine. This is the fourth volume in a series of poetry chapbooks, La Cabellera, by Veroni. Two small spots of discoloration to rear wrapper, and a couple of faint spots to page edges. Very fine.
