Russian Circus Correspondence Between Circus Director and USSR Ministry of Culture

Ministry of Culture, USSR, Moscow 1958 - Correspondence between the Ministry of Culture of the USSR/the Association of the National Circuses and the directors of a mobile travelling circus #8 from the Tajik Republic. 27pps + cover note + design calculations, specified rated loads of construction from the late 1950s. Text in handwritten ink, charts, calculations, these papers are in folder, tissue paper, one chart w/calculations measures about 50 cm x 80 cm (there are others) plus 25 sheets in red of designs, equations, construction comments, a few f/o oversized sheets included. Russian text only. Quite rare glimpse of a nomadic circus's construction and layout for its tour of the provinces during this sluggish period in Soviet history. Here the circus represented a sophisticated avant garde world beyond the scope of the poor audience that viewed them. Ask for photos. With this data you can start your own Stalinist-era circus.         Il Gattopardo.

Milano, Feltrinelli, 1958.In-8° (205x127mm), pp. 332, cartonatura editoriale. I Contemporanei", n. 4. Gambetti/Vezzosi, p. 919. Spaducci, p. 292.

        THE AFFLUENT SOCIETY. Signed

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1958 Inscribed to Joey Smallwood. 8vo. 368 pp. First Edition, early impression, (14th), of this landmark work, depicting a consumer culture gone wild, rich in goods but poor in the social services that make for community. "One of those rare works that forces a nation to re-examine its values" - The New York Times, April 30, 2006, nicely Inscribed by John Kenneth Galbraith to Premier Joey Smallwood of Newfoundland on the front free endpaper. 'For the honourable J.R. Smallwood, with my warm regards, John Kenneth Galbraith'. 'Then I had a long and close association with the most notable figure in Newfoundland history and one vital in that of Canada as well. That was Joseph Robert Smallwood. Joey Smallwood, one of the most diversely alert and interesting political leaders of this century and a central figure in the anniversary celebrations of these days. Joey Smallwood was several times in touch with me in Cambridge called me here to St. John's on one or two occasions for meetings, was one of the most interesting (and I must say unpredictable) political figures of his time. I now tell of something which until this moment is still unknown. He once pressed me hard and seriously to return to the land of my birth as head of this university. Under the arrangement that would be proposed I would retain a part-time commitment to Harvard. Not without difficulty I persuaded him that this would not be good for this university, would be unacceptable at Harvard and possibly questionable for Galbraith. Had I accepted, there would have been one certain and sad result: I would not today be receiving an honorary degree. Excerpted from the Convocation address by Dr. John Kenneth Galbraith at Memorial University Of Newfoundland - 75th anniversary of the founding of Memorial University College in 1925. (A long association well-documented). A near fine copy in brick coloured cloth, black morocco - style label with gilt titles to the spine, (some hand notations throughout), in a bright, fresh dustwrapper with some minimal use..         Madrid Suite, Number 7 [G]

Hollander Workshop New York: Hollander Workshop. 1st Edition. No Binding. Fine. ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH BY ROBERT MOTHERWELL, one of only 100 signed and numbered by Motherwell. "For this series, one of many works with a Spanish theme, Motherwell recalled an experience he had while honeymooning in Madrid with Helen Frankenthaler in 1958. He had pinned drawing paper on the hotel walls and like the way the texture of the wall transferred itself to the sheets as he drew. To re-create this experience, Motherwell taped transfer paper to the spackled walls of [printer Irwin] Hollander's studio and rubbed the sheets with lithographic crayons to achieve the desired transfer of texture" (Wye and Figura, Artists & Prints: Masterworks from the Museum of Modern Art).As Motherwell's printer and collaborator Hollander later explained: "These are rubbings! . . . a transfer of feeling from Madrid to Tenth Street. So by putting a French transfer paper on the wall and taping it, he could take litho crayons and rub. Again, using five grades of pencils, five grades of crayons, five grades of blacks, five grades of washes, he could explore and touch the surfaces. And he did it ten times. Those things sold out. People really loved this kind of symbol. Rich blacks and whites-they're the most desired. These are so rare that only a few people have these. It was just like play. They have to be looked at and spoken about very differently-that's the essence of them. Here is the simple language of Motherwell, coming from the hand, the wrist, very freely, innocently, seeing the surface of the wall, not imposing his own will. . . . He's still working within a grade of five, which is pure language. The language of the greases" (quoted in Belknap, The Prints of Robert Motherwell: A Catalogue Raisonne).Number 7 (out of a suite of 10). Belknap 15. This lithograph 94/100.New York: Hollander Workshop, 1965-66. Size (full litho): 22x27 in (559x686 mm). Printed on Arches paper. A strong impression in fine condition. RARE.

[The Complete Stories and Nursery rhymes] 23 Volumes

Frederick Warne & Co. 1958. 23 volumes complete in dust jackets, published between 1954 and 1959 with the 3/6 price, with the bulk being published in 1958. Unusual to find an earlier set in good jackets. Some jackets a little chipped here and there, "Cecily Parsley" has quite a lot of loss to the front panel of the jacket, and "Miss Moppet" & "Pig Robinson" have been gently attacked by a child with a coloured pen (perhaps 3 or 4 pages or illustrations in each), but generally a very good clean set.
