        Woina i mir.

Moscow, gos. muzykal'noe izd-vo, 1958. - Large 4to. 459, (1) pp. 289, (3) pp. 430, (2) pp. With a printed portrait frontispiece. Original cloth with giltstamped titles to cover and spine. [Includes:] Sergei Prokofiev, composer (1891-1953). Autograph musical quotation signed. No place, 1931. One bar from "The Love for Three Oranges" (op. 33). 130 x 90 mm. First edition of the score for "War and Peace" (op. 91; after Tolstoy's novel), published posthumously in 1000 copies. The present copy includes an additional autograph musical quotation by the composer. The libretto, also printed here, was written by Prokofiev himself with his second wife, Mira Mendelson. The opera, written in 1941 and extensively revised between 1946 and 1952, accompanied the composer throughout the last twelve years of his life: "The outbreak of the war gave impetus to a project Prokofiev had sketched out in spring 1941, for an opera based on 'War and Peace'. His initial plan for a small-scale, intimate opera which would highlight the personal dramas in the novel was expanded, by the war aspects in particular, and [.] in August 1941 he began the music [.] The following April, he finished 'War and Peace' [.] He sent the score of the opera to Moscow for approval, and in the meantime began its orchestration [which he completed] in March 1943 [.] Following the advice of the Committee on the Arts in Moscow, Prokofiev had drastically revised the opera in the process; the war scenes had been extended and the patriotic elements strengthened. It was no longer an intimate opera but an epic and heroic work. Prokofiev's incentive in revising the score was the promise of a production of the opera at the Bol'shoy at the end of 1943, for which Eisenstein was to design the sets [.] But, as had happened so often, the performance was first cancelled, then postponed indefinitely. Throughout the rest of his life Prokofiev continually made revisions and additions to 'War and Peace', including the composition of two new scenes, in a series of attempts to secure performances. It was only in 1957, however, after his death, that anything like a complete version of the opera was staged" (New Grove). When the Central Committee accused Prokofiev of "formalist perversions" in 1948, "War and Peace" was among the works to which the Communist Party took particular exception. - Corners insignificantly bumped, otherwise well-preserved. In Russian throughout, issued as part 6 of the works (Sobranie sochinenii), M. 26793a G., M. 26793b G., and M. 26793v G. OCLC 19801829. New Grove XV, 298. MGG X, 1649.       - (WIESE,KURT)illus. THE FIVE CHINESE BROTHERS ORIGINAL ART written by Claire Huchet Bishop. Offered here are 7 finished ink drawings and 2 pages of pencil studies for the filmstrip version of The Five Chinese Brothers prepared for Weston Woods in 1958. The images measure 10" wide x 7" high done on larger art paper. 6 of the 7 are signed by Wiese and one has pencil coloring after the originals. There are page notations under the pictures that don't correspond to the book pages and the images are similar but different from the originals. The book tells the story about 5 Chinese brothers who look identical but each has a super power he can use when in trouble. Three of the drawings are of Brother Number One who could swallow the ocean and then collect items from the ocean floor. Another picture shows three men standing in a row boat after the Third Chinese Brother was thrown overboard. Two pictures show men standing around a hot oven where the Fourth Chinese Brother was supposedly burning. The next illustration shows him happily opening the doors and emerging unscathed from the oven. The final dawing shows the Five Chinese Brothers, their mother and 2 others singing, living happily ever after. The 2 paper sheets contain pencil studies of little Chinese Boys. The story of the Five Chinese Brothers is based on a Chinese legend from the Ming Dynasty. However this version stirred controversy by depicting the stereotypes that all Asians look the same and have yellow skin. Wiese was a prolific illustrator including Bambi, Freddy the Pigs series, The Story About Ping and his You Can Write Chinese which was a Caldecott Honor. The Five Chinese Brothers was extremely popular when it was published by Coward McCann and today first editions in dust wrappers are amongst the rarest of the classics. Includes a later printing of the book. The provenance is the estate of Morton Schindel, the producer of the filmstrip. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

8vo., Second Edition, on laid paper, with frontispiece, illustrated title, and numerous full-page and smaller illustrations in the text, some relevant annotations in pencil to several recipes; original olive cloth, backstrip blocked in red and lettered in gilt, a very good, firm copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter browned at fold-ins, rubbed at joints, and mildly browned at backstrip. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON HALF-TITLE in the usual blue ink with double line. David's second book, fitst published in 1951 and to many the finest of the three classic titles that changed the nature of English cookery for ever. In common with her first work 'A Book of Mediterranean Food' this volume is greatly enhanced by the wonderful Minton illustrations, particularly the artwork for the wrap-around dustwrapper. In this second edition (from Macdonald rather than Lehmann) David adds a new Preface explaining the scope of the work, and excludes certain details relative to wartime rationing as no longer necessary. SIGNED COPIES OF DAVID'S WORKS ARE VERY SCARCE.

        De Havilland Aircraft

Hatfield, Lostock, 1958-1961. Album of photographs recording the works of De Havilland Aircraft Company, with photographs taken at Hatfield in Hertfordshire, in the Lostock production warehouse, and some at London Heathrow Airport, produced by the corporate photographer whose office was at the De Havilland Headquarters in Lostock. Contains 411 gelatin silver print photographs and 5 small negative proof photographs, numbered and captioned in manuscript, some dated, mounted in series onto grey cardstock leaves, plus 1 additional large photograph loosely placed within. A handful are duplicates, and some views are similar, being taken in a series. Large Oblong Folio two-post album measuring approximately 44,5 x 32,5 x 4 cm, beige cloth boards, titled to front "Public Relations General Photographs". Photographs vary in size, the majority measuring approximately 10 x 12 cm, some measuring approximately 5,5 x 6 cm. The unmounted photograph is the largest at 16,5 x 22 cm and bears the stamp of the De Havilland photographic department at headquarters in Lostock, to verso. The proof prints measure 2,5 x 3 cm. The album is largely centered at the Hatfield facility, where numerous important and experimental projects were undertaken, and when proven successful, would result in manufacturing at Lostock. Propellers are the first thing illustrated, including the 18-foot C.160, a model made by Napier Eland, the propeller designed for the Vickers Vanguard airliner, as well as the American made Convair unit. De Havilland was the first to examine the Vanguard propellers for safety in 1958, and one of the photographs herein shows propellers damaged in crash. Following these, are six images showing the Tyne/Vanguard propeller in the development stages, being mounted and tested on British aircraft. A page stamped "Classified" captures the inner workings of production at Lostock, whereas at Hatfield, active working scenes show the Transistor Inverter Lab, and nineteen photographs taken in July 1960 provide the rare opportunity to observe the installation of a Gnome Engine in a wind tunnel. Eight views show the altitude test chamber. Also at Hatfield, we find two views of a helicopter test platform, a demonstration of a hydraulic pump manufactured by Iangyes Limited, a hand pistol mounted on the wing of a small fighter plane, men working in various test laboratories, and an apprentice works on a firestreak. Sixty-one photographs provide a tour of the Hatfield Environmental Test Facility. A German delegate evidently visited Hartfied in July 1961, seen herein. An extensive series of images illustrates step-by-step the arduous process of shipping an aircraft overseas, in this case two Sea Vixen being dismantled and packed up Christchurch Airfield in Dorset, transported to the Southampton docks, ultimately bound for Australia onboard SS Ballrat. [Initially produced by de Havilland, designed at the Hatfield facility, this aircraft was known as the Hawker Siddeley Sea Vixen after de Havilland became a part of the Hawker Siddeley group in 1960.] British test pilot Alfred William "Bill" Bedford is seen in a photograph captioned "Hawker Siddeley 1127 first flight. Bedford. 14-3-61." [On 15 July 1960, the first "P.1127 Prototype V/STOL Strike Aircraft", serial XP831, was delivered to RAF Dunsfold, Surrey, to commence static engine testing. Bill Bedford would be the first to fly the aircraft. The first conventional flight of the P.1127 prototypes occurred on 13 March 1961, again with serial XP831. On 12 September 1961, the first successful transition from vertical to conventional flight was also performed at Dunsfold and piloted by Bill Bedford.] Aerial views show De Havilland factories at Stevenage, Portsmouth, Christchurch, and the Hatfield test site. Established in 1920 by Geoffrey de Havilland, at Stag Lane Aerodrome Edgware on the outskirts of north London, De Havilland Aircraft Company Limited was a British aviation manufacturer. Known for its innovation, de Havilland were responsible for a number of important aircraft, including the Moth biplane which revolutionised general aviation in the 1920s, as well as the 1930s Fox Moth, and the wooden World War II Mosquito light bomber, and the passenger jet service pioneering Comet. Operations were later moved to Hatfield in Hertfordshire, where in 1930 pioneering aircraft designer and the company's founder Geoffrey de Havilland purchased land. Flying commenced in 1930; the clubhouse buildings and adjacent recreational facilities, fuel pumps and sheds were completed in 1933; in 1934 significant works were undertaken at the site with a large factory and imposing administration buildings were constructed together with a flying school which also housed flying control. Later, an experimental block was added to the north of the factory. Production of aircraft was subsequently moved from Stag Lane to Hatfield, which at the time mainly consisted of a range of small biplanes. The De Havilland Aircraft Company was acquired by Hawker Siddeley in 1960 and the de Havilland name ceased to be used in 1963.

On Distributed Communications. RAND Memoranda: RM-3097-PR to 3767

First editions, first printings of the complete set of technical memoranda that formed the basis for ARPANET, the precursor to today's internet. Well-represented institutionally, but rare in commerce, with no copies in auction records and not in Hook & Norman's Origins of Cyberspace. This set has been bound together, with the owner N. R. Levandosky's name in gilt on the spine. We cannot locate Levandosky in the historical record, but RAND memoranda were mainly distributed to the military, industry, and academia, so it seems likely that he worked in the emerging fields of computer engineering or operations research, possibly for the military or a connected industry. A copy of another text owned by him, Electrical Communications Systems Engineering by the Departments of the Army and Air Force (1958) was recently for sale online in New Mexico. During the early 1960s computer engineer Paul Baran (1926-2011) was working for the RAND corporation, whose major client, the US Air Force, was interested in developing more reliable communication networks. As Baran himself explained in a 1990 interview for the Charles Babbage Institute, "This period was the height of the Cold War. Both the US and USSR were building hair trigger nuclear ballistic missile systems. The early missile control systems were not physically robust. Thus, there was a dangerous temptation for either party to misunderstand the actions of the other and fire first. if the strategic command and control systems could be more survivable, then the country's retaliatory capability could better allow it to withstand an attack and still function; a more stable position. But, this was not a wholly feasible concept because long distance communications networks at that time were extremely vulnerable and not able to survive attack. That was the issue. Here a most dangerous situation was created by the lack of a survivable communication system. That. in brief, was my interest in the challenge of building more survivable networks" (University of Minnesota website). At the time, the few computer networks that existed were centralised, but Baran's solution was to create a network of distributed nodes so that the system relied on no single node to function. Concurrently, he also developed packet switching, in which information is divided into small portions to be sent across the network and then reconstituted at its destination. Baran's work directly influenced the development of the Defense Department's ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), one of the earliest packet switching networks and the forerunner of the modern internet. "In 1969 this 'distributed' concept was given its first large-scale test, with the first node installed at UCLA, and the seventh node at RAND in Santa Monica. Funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency and called ARPANET, it was intended for scientists and researchers who wanted to share one another's computers remotely. Within two years, however, the network's users had turned it into something unforeseen: a high-speed, electronic post office for exchanging everything from technical to personal information" (Paul Baran and the Origins of the Internet, RAND Corp. website). Santa Monica, CA: The RAND Corporation, August, 1964. 11 volumes in 1, quarto (275 x 210 mm). Contemporary red library cloth, titles and owner's name to spine gilt, cream endpapers. A few small marks to the cloth, contents fresh. Excellent condition.
