Paris: The Olympia Press, 1958. 1st edition, 1st binding and the 1st issue of it with the price on the back unadulterated. Original wrappers, slight wear, short and light vertical crease at the bottom of the front cover (see photograph, it's accurate), else near fine. An unintentional burlesque of Voltaire's Candide, circumnavigating 18 year old Candy (the young woman), warm, kind, nubile, agreeable, uninhibited and unsophisticated, a blithe spirit who passes life's troubles like a freight train passes a hobo, softer than a chocolate covered marshmallow Santa Claus, affectionate as a wet dog, harder to ignore than an unscratchable itch, with a beautiful face unclouded by thought, a body so perfect it would break the heart of John Calvin, a smile that could open a clam at 20 paces, and kissed more often than a Mafia capo's hand, and by much the same kind of people. `. Near fine.

        Lenten Illuminations

Cambridge: University Press, for Siegfried Sassoon and Geoffrey Keynes,, 1958. Sight sufficient. Octavo, [pp. 8]. Original blue cloth-backed marbled boards by Mansell & Co., titles gilt to front cover. With the glassine wrapper. Text printed in black with floral blue ornamentation. Minor rubbing to spine ends, light marginal foxing; a very good copy in the jacket with nicks to edges, especially top edge, crease to rear panel, and small loss to spine ends and head of front cover. First edition, limited issue, one of 35 copies. Laid-in is Sassoon's Rogation, with the author's manuscript correction to the text. Towards the end of his life Sassoon converted to Catholicism and was admitted to the faith at Downside Abbey. Both the poems in Lenten Illuminations, and Rogation, were written at the time of his conversion. Both works are uncommon, Lenten Illuminations traced institutionally eight times world-wide, four times in the UK and four times in the US; Rogation was not traced in the UK, and found at just two locations in the US.

        Dr No.

London: Jonathan Cape. 1958 - FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.256. Publisher's black cloth, silver titles to spine, in pictorial dust-jacket designed by Pat Marriott. The first issue without the 'Dancing Lady' design on the upper board which is present on later issues. Housed in a bespoke leather spined clamshell case. Endcaps and corners slightly bumped, tiny mark to top edge. Dust-jacket shows very well with just a little creasing and nicking to the top and bottom edges, text to spine slightly dulled, some slight soiling to the rear panel. Very good. Filmed by Broccolli/Saltzman in 1962, and with a John Barry soundtrack, this was the one that started it all and introduced the world to Sean Connery. Many of the now familiar elements appeared in this first entry of the series: M, Moneypenny, Felix Leiter, Q/Major Boothroyd, SPECTRE, the Walther PPK, a Casino and a Vodka Martini! The plot was simple and the movie was low-key and down to earth; there were no overblown gadgets to save the day, only Bond's cunning and intuition. This made it a more realistic film and more like Fleming's novel; a first-rate thriller. Gilbert A6a (1.2). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

the CARPENTERED HEN and other tame creatures

Harper & Brothers 1958 - Harper & Brothers, New York, 1958, stated first edition. John Updike was considered to be one of America’s greatest writers in the second half of the twentieth century, as evidenced by the fact that he was only one of three writers that have ever won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice. A prolific writer Updike published works of poetry, short stories and dozens of Novels, including the well known “Rabbit” series. The CARPENTERED HEN was both his first poetry collection and his first published book. This book, 185 pages, is in near fine condition in a near fine, price clipped first issue dust jacket, now in a protective mylar wrapper. The only flaws on the dust jacket is very light wrinkling at the top and bottom of the spine, some 8mm in each case, and a small 2mm wrinkle by the front bottom corner and a light red 10mm mark on the back. Thus, an almost flawless copy. Beautiful, bright, square it would be an indispensable item in any Updike collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Agatha Tyche: of nervous nets the lucky reckoners” in "Mechanization of Thought"

Teddington, National Physical Laboratory. 1958 - The Mechanization of Thought Processes, Teddington, National Physical Laboratory. A collection of 12 preprints for papers presented at the symposium for November 27, 1958. No doubt these were distributed to attendees, to be read before the symposium began, as well as to all interested parties (I guess, though I'm not sure). Every paper here has some sort of notation on the front wrapper, usually in pencil but sometimes in ink; there are also notes in the papers themselves. VG condition overall. __+__ Richard L. Gregory, In his book Odd Perceptions (Routledge, chap 6), remember this 1958 conference as the one which “launched a new way of thinking about brain functions and mind, in terms of neural nets and computing”, and mentioning papers by Minsky, McCarthy, Rosenblatt, Uttley, Selfridge. When Gregory got to the McCulloch paper (above), he calls it “the most memorable of them all”.__+__ On the paper wrapper cover of each is printed “to be presented at a symposium on the Mechanization of Thought Processes”, National Physical Laboratory, Teddington. They would be published in Mechanization of Thought Processes: Proceedings of a Symposium Held at the National Physical Laboratory, London, Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, November, 24-27 1958, in two volumes, in 1959.__+__ There were 32 papers overall from the symposium. Note: the notations for “Paper 3-6” relates to the section/paper number of the printed version of the symposium published in two volumes in 1959.__+__ The papers: McCulloch W.S., “Agatha Tyche: of nervous nets the lucky reckoners”, 24x17.5cm, 15pp. The cover has an old vertical crease, otherwise VG. “A magnificent piece of work called Agathe Tyche: The lucky reckoners offers a fair overview of much of his philosophy with respect to ways of building reliable machinery from unsafe components. The classic by Cowan called Reliable Computation in the Presence of Noise and almost all of his later work on reliable computing was the result of McCulloch’s expansion of Von Neumann’s original concept.”--Roberto Moreno-Díaz, Neurocybernetics and Artificial Intelligence.__+__ “It took me 5 years to develop probabilistic logic sufficiently to handle two things: first, circuits which, like the respiratory mechanism, keep working despite common shift of threshold even under surgical anaesthesia. You will find these tricks described in “Agathe Tyche” “ McCulloch, in referencing von Neumann “ Probabilistic logic and synthesis of reliable organisms from unreliable components” (1956). --McCulloch W. S., ”Reliable systems using unreliable units”, in: David McKenzie Rioch. & Edwin A. W. (eds.) Disorders of communication, 1964, p. 24.__+__ Also included: A.M. Andrews, “Learning Machines”, 24x17.5 cm 31pp., “Paper 3-6”. Very Good. H.B. Barlow, “Sensory Mechanisms, the Reduction of Redundancy, and Intelligence”, 24x17.5cm, 25pp, “Paper 4-1”. D.B. Fry and P. Denes, “An Analogue of the Speech recognition Process”, 24x17.5cm, 10pp, “Paper 3-1”. Near-fine copy, save for a note in pen on the front cover, and some extensive notes on two pages (6-7) also in pen. S. Gill, “Possibilities for the Practical Utilization of Learning Processes” 24x17.5 cm, 9pp R.L. Gregory, “Models and the Localisation of Function in the Central Nervous System”. 24X17.5cm, 13pp. “Paper 4-5”. VG P. Ladefoged, “The Perception of Speech”, 24x17.5cm, 13pp, “Paper 3-2”. Near-fine save for some notes in pen on the front cover (“evolution as a Markoff Process”. D.M. MacKay, “Operational Aspects of Intellect”, 24x17.5 cm, 16pp, “Paper 1-2”. This is no doubt an early photographic reproduction of the original paper, printed on one side only, and stapled at top-left. There are several ms notes through the text. Good. Newman, E.A. “An Analysis of Non-Mathematical Data Processing”, 24x17.5cm, 12pp., “Paper 4-12”. Notes in pen rather than the usual pencil, otherwise a VG copy. A.W.       (1958) 1958 - Typewritten letter measures 7.5 inches by 9 inches; approximately forty words. Creased from folding, slightly age-toned, but very good. In 1958 two reporters, Mary McGrory and Tom Kelly, interviewed Ezra Pound while he was incarcerated at St. Elizabeth's Psychiatric Hospital in Washington, D.C. for treason. Afterwards Pound gave Kelly this personalized poetic letter, in which he call himself "the white hope of american letters." Text as follows: Address unknown, or somewhere in the U.S. motto, and "Clancey leoward the BOOM". Substitute "Kelly" for "Clancey", and procede to leower some more of 'em. thank you for the six copies. yours etc. [signature] the white hope of american letters -Hung on wall in Dupont Circle Store, Aisle D.
