Bolschaja (Bolshaya, Bolshaja, Bol’shaja) Sovetskaja (Sovjetskaja, Sovietskaya, Sowjetskaja) Enziclojedija (Enciklopedia, Enziclopediya). Große Sowjetische Enzyklopädie, 2. Ausgabe, 50 + 1 + 2 Bände, 1949 – 1958.

Moskau 1949 – 1958.

        SOMEDAY, SOMEWHERE

Tokyo: Geigi Shuppan, 1958. First ed. Ishimoto, Yasuhiro. 4to., (168) pp., 185 photographs in b&w and color. A near fine copy in the illustrated dw that shows very light wear at the edges. Housed in a newly made cloth with paper labels, clamshell box. Born in San Francisco in 1921 to Japanese parents, Ishimoto soon after removed to Japan. He returned to the U.S. in 1939 and was held in a detention camp for two years during the war. In 1946 he entered the School of Architecture at Northwestern University, and two years later, he transferred to the Institute of Design, where he studied photography under the direction of Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind In this, his first book, Ishimoto's bold use of contrast, the design of the frame, and the influence of his studies in architecture, give the appearance of coolness and detachment from sentimentality. However, his choice of subjects, a large body of which is children at play, addresses his humanity. "He has developed a visual idiom which constitutes a sort of personal critique on the civilization around him... his idiom is characterized by what might be described as psychological shadows..." , from the introduction by Tsutomu Watanabe. Yasuhiro Ishimoto is considered one of the most influential of Japanese photographers of his generation.

        DHARMA BUMS

New York: Viking Press, 1958. First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth with green metallic lettering on upper cover and silver and green lettering on the spine, in the original pictorially decorated dustjacket designed by Bill English. 244 pp. A fine copy of the book, as pristine and apparently unused, very well preserved with only a touch of near invisible evidence of age to the black cloth; the jacket is complete and whole with only some very light expected rubbing to the black paper as is usual. Unobtrusive, nearly imperceptible evidence of light crinkling at a lower corner. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF THE BEAT GENERATION IN THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET. Arguably Kerouac’s best work, and his second best known, DHARMA BUMS largely introduced the world to poet Gary Snyder in the form of semi-fictionalized “Japhy Ryder”. The story is driven by Japhy, whose penchant for the simple life and Zen Buddhism greatly influenced Kerouac on the eve of the sudden and unpredicted success of ON THE ROAD. The same humor and zest for life that made ON THE ROAD the literary masterpiece of the Beat Generation is found here in DHARMA BUMS, but in a more cohesive story inspired by a more comprehensible goal. After its publication Snyder wrote Kerouac saying, “"Dharma Bums is a beautiful book, and I am amazed and touched that you should say so many nice things about me because that period was for me really a great process of learning from you...." “From the Pagan depths of Frisco’s bohemian bars to the dizzying heights of the snow-capped Sierras this is the story of two sensation-seeking hipsters and their jet propelled search for Experience.” These are experiences as only Jack Kerouac, voice of the Beat Generation, can relay them.

        ISRAEL

Tel-Aviv/Jerusalem: Massadah Publishing Co. Ltd., [1958]. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine without dustwrapper, as issued. Large quarto (8-3/4" x 11-1/4") bound in original cloth with the name of the owner, General John H. Hilldring, stamped in gilt on the front cover. Text in French and English. Preface by David Ben-Gurion. Illustrated with photographs in black-and-white and in color. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in English on the half-title page by Israel's first prime minister: To General/John H. Hilldring/in friendship/D. Ben-Gurion/Jerusalem/5.6.58." Not only is this inscribed while Ben-Gurion was in office, it is also inscribed to an important figure in Israel's early history. General John Hilldring was the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Occupied Areas during World War II and was responsible for organizing military governments for countries to be liberated or conquered. Hilldring recommended Colonel David "Mickey" Marcus, a Jewish officer who had been under his command, to Ben-Gurion. Marcus, under the name of "Michael Stone," designed a command structure for Israel's new army and wrote manuals to train it. As a result of his efforts Israel, when it declared independence and the Arab armies attacked in May 1948, defended itself successfully. In gratitude, Ben-Gurion made Marcus the first general in the army of Israel since Judah Maccabee nearly two thousand years ago. He was accidentally killed at the age of 46 by a Jewish sentry six hours before a United Nations negotiated cease fire began. The film CAST A GIANT SHADOW was based on his life. Ben-Gurion said of him, "He was the best man we had.

Mes dessins d'Antibes (Portfolio with 16 Prints by Picasso)

Mes dessins d'Antibes. Avant-Propos de Georges Salles. Au Pont Des Arts, Paris, 1958. Portfolio of 16 lithographs in colors, on Arches paper, numbered h.c. 42 in pencil, from the hors commerce edition of 50 (there were also 300 numbered copies). The portfolio also includes title, text and justification; all sheets, loose as issued, in generally good condition, are guarded in the canvas folder with title and reproduction of the artist's signature in red. The series "Mes dessins d'Antibes" of sixteen lithographs on velin d'Arches pur Chiffon (by Daniel Jacomet) represent the ancient Greece of Antibes, Antypolis. Published in Paris during 1958, this work reproduces the magnificent original Picasso drawings of 1946. Here Picasso utilized possibly for the first time the lithographic technique, reproduced here almost in monochrome to recreate the austere mythological interaction of the Centaur, the Nymph and the Faun, a constant theme in Picasso's post-war period. Size: 65 x 50 cm
