The Memoirs of Field-Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR

Collins 1958 - 8vo., First Edition, with a fine portrait frontispiece and 65 plates and maps (a number full-page) on 39, endpapers and title mildly spotted; original red cloth, gilt back, red top, backstrip lightly faded at head and tail (but all gilt entirely legible) a very good, crisp copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter chafed at extremities and lightly browned on (predominantly white) lower panel. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. With an extensive newspaper obituary and another relevant cutting loosely inserted. One of the key military memoirs of the twentieth century, this is as much an autobiography as a soldier's account of war. Written entirely by 'Monty' himself (in pencil, as so many of his official communications were composed), this characteristically straightforward (and often politically outspoken) account covers boyhood, early service with the Warwickshires, WWII and beyond (notably, about a third of the work covers his post-war career as CIGS and after). For technical military detail we look to the author's other works; here we find the simple account of a 'soldier who kept the faith'. A great read from one of the unforgettable leaders of his times. Sui numeri 3, 6-7, 8-9, 15-16 vennero dibattuti i contrasti esistenti. Alla direzione si sono succeduti GEROLA , ZAGARRIO, ed infine TOTI e MARESCALCHI. Dr. No (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1958, 1958. First Edition. SIGNED BY ACTRESS LOIS MAXWELL. 8vo., pp256. Elegantly hand-bound in full black black oasis morocco, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, gilt rule to covers, scarlet red endpapers, top edge gilt. Near fine. This particular copy features the signature of Lois Maxwell, who played series character Miss Moneypenny in the first fourteen James Bond films, from 1962-1985; her autograph appears opposite the title-page. Filmed by Broccolli/Saltzman in 1962, and with a John Barry soundtrack, this was the one that started it all and introduced the world to Sean Connery... Many of the now familiar elements appeared in this first entry of the series: M, Moneypenny, Felix Leiter, Q/Major Boothroyd, SPECTRE, the Walther PPK, a Casino and a Vodka Martini! The plot was simple and the movie was low-key and down to earth; there were none of the later overblown gadgets to save the day, only Bond's cunning and intuition, which made it a more realistic film and more like Fleming's novel; a first-rate thriller.

It may look all right for consultations at the F.O. but you'll have to accentuate the bust a bit to get by in Paris

1958. Sheet size: 191 × 139 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 30 Jul 1958. Ferment in the Arab world in 1958 led to an influx of Arab diplomats in London and Paris. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. The Dharma Bums

New York: Viking Press, 1958. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. A very bright copy. There were three books that really shaped Kerouac's public image, the three that came out within a year of each other in 1957 and 1958: On the Road, The Subterraneans and The Dharma Bums" (Charters, 295). One of the best and most popular of Kerouac's autobiographical novels, The Dharma Bums is based on experiences the writer had during the mid-1950s while living in California, after he'd become interested in Buddhism's spiritual mode of understanding. One of the book's main characters, Japhy Ryder, is thinly disguised on the poet Gary Snyder, who was a close friend and whose interest in Buddhism influenced Kerouac.
