Someday, Somewhere (First Edition with Dust Jacket and All Ephemera)

Tokyo: Geibi Shuppan, 1958. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. This is a first edition, first printing of Yasuhiro Ishimoto\'s critically acclaimed photobook \"Someday, Somewhere (Aruhi Arutokoro)\" published by Geibi Shuppan, Tokyo in 1958. The book features 7 color photographs and 178 black-and-white gravures including various gatefolds and fold-outs. In volume one of \"The Photobook: A History\", Parr and Badger write: \"Yasuhiro Ishimoto represented an influential link between Japanese and American Photography . In 1958 he had the distinction of producing the first major postwar Japanese photobook, the elegant Aruhi Arutokoro (Someday, Somewhere), shot in both Tokyo and Chicago . Aruhi Arutokoro is a photobook of truly international stature, providing Japanese photographers with a model of expression that transcended both the parochial and the purely documentary tendency dominating Japanese photography of the time\". Measuring approximately 11.25 x 9 inches, the book is bound in black cloth covered boards with a yellow spine and a photographically illustrated dust jacket. Laid into the book are 3 pieces of ephemera - a small booklet containing messages by book designer Ryuichi Yamashiro, Taro Okamoto, Ken Domon, and others, the publisher\'s postcard, and slit. The condition of the dust jacket is Very Good+ with some minor chipping and closed tears to the edges and a small amount of loss to the head and heel of the spine area. The inside of the dust jacket has been reinforced with tape at the head and heel of the spine. There is also some surface wear to the front and back covers. The book is in Near Fine- condition with some foxing to the top outside of the book and top outside edges that does not extend to inside of book with the exception of a tiny foxing spot on the top edge of the folding page. The pages opposite the first image page and the index page show some printing ink reflection which is very common for this title. The ephemera is in FINE- condition. Notwithstanding the list of faults listed above, this is a superior copy of this title that has all of the elements as issued. Cited in \"The Photobook: A History by Parr & Badger and Ryuichi Kaneko\'s reference work on Japanese Photobooks, \"Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 1970s\".

Original publisher's blue/green printed wraps. Entire number offered. Outside Inside (Signed First Edition, 3 Volumes)

Germany: Steidl, 2009. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New. This is a signed first edition of \"Outside Inside\" published by Steidl, Germany in 2009. From the publisher: \"Outside Inside\" is a gorgeous three-volume box set of 800 photographs drawn from this master photographer\'s immense archive. Chosen by Davidson himself, the selection spans a 60-year career, and features such seminal bodies of work as Circus (1958), Brooklyn Gang (1959), East 100th Street (1966-1968), The Civil Rights Movement (1961-1965), Subway (1980) and Central Park (1992-1995), as well as his two most recent works in progress - a series of urban landscapes made in Paris (2007) and Los Angeles (2009) - and many unpublished photographs. The pages in these volumes document Davidson\'s passionate and progressive vision, a vision that bears witness to several decades of volatile change in twentieth-century America. Born in 1933 in Oak Park, Illinois, Bruce Davidson\'s prolific career began in 1949, when he began taking photographs as a precocious 16-year-old. In 1954, he studied at Yale University with the great teacher and artist, Josef Albers, working briefly as a freelance photographer for Life magazine before joining Magnum Photos in 1958, after a meeting with one of its founders, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Davidson was given a Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Arts Club in 2007. His work has been extensively published in monographs and is included in many major collections around the world. Measuring approximately 15.5 x 15.5 x 8 inches (22 pounds) and containing over 800 tritone plates, the 3 books are bound in cloth covered boards with a tipped-on cover image and are housed in a custom slipcase. The books and slipcase are still in the original publisher\'s box. The slipcase has been signed by Bruce Davidson in silver pen just below the title. This signing took place on October 5, 2010 at Barnes and Noble in New York City and a photograph of the signing appears at the end of this listing. The books and slipcase are in As New condition.

Typed Signed Letter (TSL) marked 'personal' of Anthony Eden, to John E. Hunt

1958 - 5 x 8 inches, was folded now flat, typed signed letter to John E. (Edwin) Hunt of New Zealand. On Donhead House Shaftesbury blind embossed letterhead (Anthony Eden lived at Donhead House for a year following the Suez Crisis of 1956). Dated July 31st, 1958. Marked PERSONAL. Writing with appreciation and comments about the Suez Crisis of 1956, and noting: ?I was quite sure that in time the purpose I had in mind would be understood. My only regret now is that the two years which have elapsed have made the task a very difficult one for the free world?. Very Good condition. Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon was an English Conservative politician who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. He was also Foreign Secretary for three periods between 1935 and 1955, including during World War II. He is best known for his outspoken opposition to appeasement in the 1930s; his diplomatic leadership in the 1940s and 1950s; and the failure of his Middle East policy in 1956 that ended his premiership. Suez in retrospect: Following the defeat of the Arab armies by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967, Eden's own reputation, not least in Israel and the United States, soared, and he was deluged with letters of the "you were right in 1956" variety. In 1986, Eden's official biographer Robert Rhodes James re-evaluated sympathetically Eden's stance over Suez and in 1990, following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, James asked: "Who can now claim that Eden was wrong?". Such arguments turn mostly on whether, as a matter of policy, the Suez operation was fundamentally flawed or whether, as such "revisionists" thought, the lack of American support conveyed the impression that the West was divided and weak. Anthony Nutting, who resigned as a Foreign Office Minister over Suez, expressed the former view in 1967, the year of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, when he wrote that "we had sown the wind of bitterness and we were to reap the whirlwind of revenge and rebellion". Conversely, D. R. Thorpe, another of Eden's biographers, suggests that had the Suez venture succeeded, "there would almost certainly have been no Middle East war in 1967, and probably no Yom Kippur War in 1973 also". The Fixer.

Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, New York 1958 - First edition of the author's first collection of short stories that went on to win the National Book Award. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "All good wishes to Fred and Louise Sincerely Bern Corvallis 1959." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows light wear to the spine. The Magic Barrel, has been recognized as a classic from the time it was published in 1959. The stories are set in New York and in Italy (where Malamud's alter ego, the struggleing New York Jewish Painter Arthur Fidelman, roams amid the ruins of old Europe in search of his artistic patrimony); they tell of egg candlers and shoemakers, matchmakers, and rabbis, in a voice that blends vigorous urban realism, Yiddish idiom, and a dash of artistic magic. "In the short story, Malamud achieved an almost psalmlike compression. He has been called the Jewish Hawthorne, but he might just as well be thought a Jewish Chopin, a prose composer of preludes and noctures" (Mark Shechner, Partisan Review). Why, it's only a couple of thousand more than Tommy Steele would want for a year at the Palladium.

1958 1958 - Sheet size: 190 × 140 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 19 Feb 1958. Pen and ink on wove paper. Nellie McGreal of Stockport was the first football pools winner to win more than £200,000. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        Linear Programming and Economic Analysis

New York: McGraw-Hill Company, Inc., 1958. First edition of this classic text. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by both Paul A. Samuelson and Robert M. Solow on the title page. In near fine condition. Linear programming has been one of the most important postwar developments in economic theory, but until publication of the Linear Programming and Economic Analysis, no text offered a comprehensive treatment of the many facets of the relationship of linear programming to traditional economic theory. This book was the first to provide a wide-ranging survey of such important aspects of the topic as the interrelations between the celebrated von Neumann theory of games and linear programming, and the relationship between game theory and the traditional economic theories of duopoly and bilateral monopoly.

        Les Americains (First Edition)

Paris: Robert Delpire, 1958. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. This is the true first edition, first printing of Robert Frank\'s masterpiece \"Les Americans\" published by Robert Delpire, Paris in 1958. Robert Frank spent most of the late 1950s making \"a number of short trips out from New York and one long (nine-month) journey to the West Coast in a 1950 Ford to photograph America. From the more than 20,000 images that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters. \'With these photographs,\' he later wrote, \'I have attempted to show a cross-section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. The view is personal.\' Such a simple intention for a book that would so alter the course of modern photography\" (Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century). Frank\'s Américains eventually achieved legendary status as \"the most renowned photobook of all. It struck a chord with a whole generation of American photographers. Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank\'s masterpiece\" (Parr & Badger, \"The Photobook: A History\"). Featuring 83 full-page photogravures with text by numerous authors edited by Alain Bosquet, the book is an oblong octavo with glazed paper over boards with drawings by Saul Steinberg. The condition of the book is Near Fine+ with minor surface wear to the cover including a scratch to the glaze on the rear cover, some foxing to the endpapers and a paper split to the free front pages (The cloth which maintains the integrity of the book is sound and undamaged). A highly collectible copy of arguably the greatest photobook ever published. Cited in both \"The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century\" by Andrew Roth and \"The Photobook: A History\", by Parr and Badger.

I found her quite cooperative. She agreed to take the boys to visit the schools as soon as she could. I shall check on this and if she delays it too long I shall take them myself. I believe that both schools are holding places for the boys unless of course it is delayed beyond measure. Contains 'Absence of Diffusion in Certain Random Lattices' IN The Physical Review, Vol 109, Second Series, Number 5, March 1, 1958, pages 1492-1505. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1977 was awarded jointly to Philip Warren Anderson, Sir Nevill Francis Mott and John Hasbrouck van Vleck "for their fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems". 'This paper presents a simple model for such process as spin diffusion or conduction in the impurity band. These processes involve transport in a lattice which is in some sense random, and in them diffusion is expected to take place via quantum jumps between localized sites. In this simple model the essential randomness is introducted by requiring the energy to vary randomly from site to site. It is shown that at low enough densities no diffusion at all can take place, and the criteria for transport to occur are given.' (abstract) 'One of the more subtle electronic features of real materials is the distinction between continuum electronic states and conducting electronic states. The fact that continuum electronic states in band tails might be localized was recognized by P. W. Anderson [Phys. Rev. 109, 1492 (1958)] in a paper that appeared just about the time superconductivity was being explained.' (The Physical Review, The First Hundred Years, a Selection of Seminal Papers and Commentaries, p. 621) Also contains articles by Sudarshan and Marshak about Fermi interaction as well as Lee, Yang and others.
